So punk photographer Rob Coons (AKA: Rob Taco) gave me a ring asking if he could come in to co-host a Punk covers night. What was I supposed to say? I jumped at the chance to collaborate with Rob on such a fun show.

I've played a ton of covers in the past, but Rob's idea was to play both the cover and the original. He also wanted to make the point that many covers came from originals that were as far from Punk as one could get! He wasn't kidding.

I played along, but only played the covers. 

Daniel (AKA: DJ Copper Stripper (who knew there were at least three meanings to this moniker???)) was present but neglected to bring any vinyl along. WTH DJ CS????

I'm curious how many of you knew these were covers? 

We had so much fun we've decided to host a part two in the coming months.

Also, now that we're getting closer to fall, it's time to prepare for my 16th annual Annual Annual. I think we're going with 1967, unless Copper Stripper gets his way and we do 1933. I also like the idea of doing 1982, but I did 1981 last year, so probably not. 

If you're unaware of this special, I play at least two hours from one year. Last year I played four hours from 1981 and it was amazing. 

My 16th annual Annual Annual will be sometime in late November. Stay tuned.

Next Monday night I'm thrilled to have Kate Vargas and Eric McFadden of Sgt. Splendor in the studio playing tunes and talking up their residency at Soiled Dove in Alameda. Talking to Kate and Eric is always a treat.

Nothing to see here. Apparently there is something to listen to, however. Listening to this show week to week has been shown to improve your musical intelligence and increase your ADHD!

I have to thank DJ Copper Stripper, or DJ Charlie Daniels Hologram...whatever Daniel is going by these days, for injecting the genre-bending goodness that he does so well, week after week. I come from the school of keep your listeners on their toes kind of radio. Daniel takes this to heart. He deserves a full throated thank you for that.

Monday night continues in this vein. We both have a lot to say on the turntables and on the mic. We were certainly in the zone on this show. It went off the rails a few times. Give it a spin.

Another Monday, another chance to get into your pants. That's if your pants are your ears. See what I did there? I was trying to do a rhyme thing. It didn't work. I could have just deleted this, but for some reason I'm still typing. Still. Not stopping.

In other news, Daniel (AKA: DJ Copper Stripper) takes over the decks in the second hour in preparation of filling in for me next Monday night. I know you're going to dig that.

If you've been tuning in since March you've heard Daniel join me every week, bringing in records I never would have looked for while crate digging. And that's a good thing!

Rock out, you fools!

That was the plan tonight. Don't have a plan. Just gather what you think you need and fly. That's a good strategy, dontcha think? It works for me most of the time.

The most planning I do for my show is pulling music I've purchased recently and coupling that with artists from my library that have been running through my head, or I feel will pair nicely with what I've already got ready to go.

I also know that Daniel is going to bring in his share of treats that will get a spin. He even surprised me with a 7" box set of noise that I didn't know I needed. Thanks Daniel!

There was one scheduled interview for Monday night. I had Kevin Seal coming in to talk about the upcoming Seal Party show at the Rickshaw Stop on Friday, August 14th.

Then the Icelanders walked by.

Daniel and I were talking about something nonsensical, and I made some comment about "fools" just as three people were walking by the open door (the Radio Valencia studios are street level). They looked at me and I waved them in. That's how we came to have three young Icelanders in the studio, and I put them on mic. 

Impromptu interviews happen, so I was just happy to gice these kids their first taste of being on the radio, and while they're visiting the states!!!

Has this ever happened to you: you're in the pit, minding your own business, moving around and around, and across, and around, most likely in a counter-clockwise fashion (there's scientific studies that explain why), and every so often clockwise, elbows up (if you're in Fresno!), helping up your fallen brothers and sisters, and then a flash goes off in your face?!?!?!

What the hell was that?

More like WHO the hell was that?

More than likely it was Rob Coons, capturing you in all your pit-living glory. 

Indiana born Rob Coons made his way to San Francisco in the early 90s, involved in the music scene as contributor to Maximum Rock and Roll, including a few years on their radio show, which also ran on Radio Valencia! He started shooting live shows about ten years ago, first and foremost as a fan of music, especially hardcore punk; a card-carrying member of Gilman Street. 

His live pics of concert-goers is full of energy: many depicting crowd surfers and stage jumpers. I cannot get enough of Rob's content.

Neither will you.

Monday night Rob came on to share some really great stories and highlights of his own journey, as well as sharing the soundtrack he loves the most.

What an honor it was to have in my darling daughter, Lauson, who wanted to host a tribute to her fallen hero: Amy Winehouse, who passed away 15 years ago this week. Lauson has really come into her own as a show host. All these sets up to the L7 set are hers. For as long as I can remember, Lauson's favorite artist is Amy Winehouse. She has been inspired by her since she was a youngster, and I know a lot of the music she listens to has either inspired Winehouse or was inspired by her. I hope you're as impressed by these sets as I am.

Lauson is a natural on mic, having started with me 14 years ago when she was just a wee seven year old. Listen to her now! And stick around for her new airname!!!

Daniel, aka: DJ Charlie Daniels Hologram, was in the house, and contributed many a fine vocabulary term.

Mondays mean more music for your earholes. Ever since I co-produced the celebration of 50 years of Punk in San Francisco back in February, at the Mabuhay Gardens and On Broadway, I've had club booker Daniel Haver join me each week, playing music he's found during the week. And let me tell you, Daniel, all of 23 years old, has the knowledge and taste of a person with ten times the experience. 

I spent nine glorious years at KFJC, considered one of the most eclectic and diverse collections anywhere. This is where I received the best music education. Daniel would have fit right in with that crew. He may even have educated a few of the more curmudgeonly ones, who are not quick to being inspired by those younger than them. IFYKYK

Since it was only Daniel and myself tonight (until sound man Christopher and lighting guru Ignacio showed up), it was all, or mostly, about the music. And then it was too much roommate radio. 

But I digress.

Monday night, Daniel and I hosted photographer Jimmy Jocoy, known for his fiercely intimate portraits of young punks in the West Coast scene in the 1970s and 1980s. There wasn't a show that Jimmy attended where his camera wasn't slung at his side. 

Jimmy's story is one of curiosity for his subjects, and some risk taking at times. It's also about what he chose not to shoot. I was surprised to learn that he published very few photos during the heyday of West Coast Punk, and it wasn't until 25 years after he took his last concert pics, and left them in a box in his home, that he was encouraged to pull them out for publishing consideration. And a huge thanks to Thurston Moore for having the sharp eye, noting these images must be seen by the world. 

We're all better for this.

In a world where we are hooked on the live, in your face, boot to the head concert pics, Jimmy's are much more intimate. He asks the subject if he can pull them aside, away from the frenetic energy of the mosh pit, to a less obtrusive and desaturated backdrop to frame them in the deep saturation, showcasing their style. 

Jimmy caught people in vulnerable moments that make me feel like I was in their bedroom while they were choosing what to wear to the FabMab that night.

Jimmy has published two books of his works: "We're Desperate" (2002), and "Order of Appearance" (2017). Both books showcase the images much more than offering the context, drawing you deeper into the experience. You can feel yourself in the room, soaking in with all senses what Jimmy felt and captured.

We're all desperate and satisfied that Jimmy captured and shared what he has.

I was feeling in the grove...er, groove tonight. In the groove. Yeah, that's it. Hmmmmmmm

A Monday without a guest is a rare thing these days, so I took the opportunity to go deeper into my library, which included a few CDs. I know, I know. this is not my normal thing, but there were a few songs that have been going through my mind that I only own on CD. You have to understand, the 90s and 00s it was hard to find your favorite artists releasing anything new on vinyl. CD was King there for a wee bit.

I remember working at Tower Records in San Mateo (88-91), and they were making the transition away from vinyl. The staff was in an uproar about this, as we all knew CDs were a fad, like the 8-track tape. Since production costs for CDs were so low, it was attractive to the company to go in this direction. And for too many years it played this way. Unless an artist was with a vinyl-friendly label, or self-releasing, they had to go with CDs. 

I collected a lot of CDs during these years. Thousands. For a number of years I had quite an impressive CD shelving setup that I built myself. Floor to ceiling, twelve feet across, 12 shelves. Thousands of CDs, all organized by genre. And then I moved to a smaller home and away went the shelves, as I had to place them all into binders. And the binders sit in my closet. Since then I don't spend much time playing them. But there they sit. And there's some good stuff in those binders! 

So tonight I had a few songs in my head that were laying low in my closet. Eight of the songs I played tonight are on CD. Not that you're keeping count. I may need to pull more from there, or at least not hde the binders away in my closet.

New music from Earth Tongue (produced by Ty Segall), Angine de Poitrine, Surprise Privilege, and OSees tonight. There's a remaster/reissue from Aretha Franklin in there, an NWA edit you didn't know you needed too. 

Daniel Haver from the FabMab was in...and is quickly becoming my foil in the best sense. He brought some truly "great" 7"s that'll leave you as stumped as we were trying to figure out just exactly how old Sheila Raye is...or was. 24? 57? Who knows? 

If this isn't a show that's chock full of punk, funk and junk, then I'll throw my CD collection away.

Summer has reared its face in San Francisco, which means "June Gloom" and I'm here for it! I love it! Give me a fog tan and I'm a happy boy! And no guests means I can play what's been on repeat in the Hell household this past week. 

I've been shopping a lot the past few weeks, and it's not going to slow down. East Bay stores like Down Home Records and Moving Records are always a treat to stop by when I have time to dig. Without listing every store I've been patronizing, I can tell you the crate digging has been a delight. 

And then there are the times I shop at home! If you have a record collection then you know there are the moments when you forget that you own that particular album. It doesn't happen often, but when it does it lends a look of confusion and surprise to my face. And why not? I think I've only inadvertently purchased records I've already owned a couple of time. That's the danger though of a growing collection.

This week only about 25% of the show came from my library. Most are new, and of course Daniel from the Mab came through and offered some tasty treats to Hell's Kitchen Radio (marked with "DH"). I love having Daniel hang out. We're getting a great crew in the studio on Monday nights.

What a treat! Monday night I had Cody and Joey from Surprise Privilege come through talking about their new album, Hard Listen. They had a lot of great stories to share about being a Tardcore band in San Francisco. We played over 90 minutes of music from their growing catalogue. I really appreciate how articulate they both are about the music they're making as well as their thoughts on the current music scene and their place in it.

Pretty Sims from False Flag was also in the studio to talk a bit about the new album, Art School.

We also get to learn what F.Y.J.F.Y. stand for. It's exactly what you think it stands for.

Pretty and Cody own I Hate Records on Haight Street. This is a small but very mighty store that focuses on Punk, but you can find music from many genres as well as some sweet swag from the store, and some thrift items you didn't know you needed. Stop by and tag their walls. They'll thank you for it.

I Hate Records also celebrated their one year anniversary on June 13th with both bands performing live in the store. That was a blast to be a part of. They should do that every month!

The music scene is alive and (literally) kicking in San Francisco.
