Another week, another opportunity for me to shine upon you all the music that needs spinning. This is the kind of show where I poke through my records and say "I haven't listened to this in a while". And because of this I feel it my duty to bring you along for the ride.

I also felt the need to play a few of the records I purchased at the record swap a couple weeks ago. 

This is a weird show of sorts. I'm always mixing up the genres, but tonight felt a little schitzo. Sorry, not sorry. 

New music from Kate Vargas, Mien, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, and the latest Beatles Anthology! 

The holidays are upon us. I don't suffer from seasonal depression, but I know a few who do. Get out of the house, see live music, sit in a cafe and read a book, go for long walks, exercise. Move your body to lift your spirits. Hell has what you need.

I went to Mosswood Meltdown last Saturday, and it was as good as I expected it to be. Niis, Prison Affair,

OSees and DEVO were the real standouts. The sun cleared for a while and I found myself relaxing under the shade of a tree in the vendors area. I bought myself some 45s (my motorcycle bags aren't large enough to hold LPs. I probably saved some money there).

I eventually found myself directly in front of the soundboard hanging out with a few friends, including our Radio Valencia staff photographer Sean Haley, who brought a bunch of die-cut Radio Valencia stickers for us to pass out. Thanks Sean! 

I've seen the OSees many times, and never tire of them. What a brilliant set they brought. This was my first time seeing DEVO, and WOW is all I can say. There's actually a lot more I can say. I can talk about how both Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale are still on top of their game after 50+ years. I can talk about the stellar video graphics projected
throughout the show. I can talk about the setlist that we all sang along with. It was that good.

I can also talk about showing up on Sunday just to find out that I never did purchase a ticket for that day. D'oh! I went home and streamed the day. Shannon and the Clams put on a brilliant set as they always do. 

Early bird tickets for Mosswood Meltdown 2026 are now on sale. And they are going fast!!! I got mine!

Tune into my Tuesday night Live Bootleg Bonanza and I'm sure you'll be hearing some of the sets from this year.

For tonight's show I played a bunch of the 45s I bought at the Meltdown. It's safe to say this is a very punk-forward program. But it's not exclusive. See the setlist below for details.

And then in the middle of the show I come to find out that Jonathan Richman was performing next door at the Make Out Room!!!!! What the what!!!! So I did what any self respecting DJ would do: I found some never before released bootleg demos of Modern Lovers and I played a track as the show was exiting. I really should have grabbed Jonathan for an interview; the fan boy that I am. Alas, he slipped away before I had a chance to even steal a photo of him.

He was there in support of singer-songwriter Jesse DeNatale and the Dreamers, who are playing every Monday night in July. Go see this show!

I'm heading to the Rock and Roll Flea Market on Alameda at Faction Brewing this Saturday afternoon,
followed by the US Finals Air Guitar Championship at The Independent Saturday night. I'll see you at both.

This past Monday I had a new Radio Valencia staffer come in for training, so I didn't promote the show. When I have to divide my attention I don't feel that it's worth putting out the word. That being said, the music was on point even if my announcing wasn't. And you're here for the music.

New year, new, show, new chance to make this even better for you. Have you ever thought about time travel? What do you think about? Where would you go? Why? Who would you want to see? Is this a kill Hitler kind of thing, or more of a see your favorite band before they made it big?

Maybe you just want to see some relatives in their prime? Holiday dinner with the folks? I haven't had dinner with my folks since May of 1984, before they separated when I was 13, two weeks after my very embarrassing bar mitzvah. It's possible we all dined together once or twice following then, but I don't recall. I'm not sad about it. I grew up living with my dad through high school, and it was really quite fabulous. I had no leash. San Francisco in the 80s was a lot of fun when you're a teen with no leash. Thanks dad.

My dad, Harvey Rosenberg, passed away last week at the age of 81, from Parkinson's Disease. He was such a great guy. Monday, January 9th, I'm going to host a two hour tribute to the man who brought music into my life. I wouldn't be who I am today without my father. I'll tell you all about him on Monday night. Tune in, it'll be worth it.

There was lots of rain this week so there's a lot of rain song mixed in tonight, along with a bunch of my faves from 2022. I have a lot of anniversary and remaster releases I threw in as well.

In the two plus years I have hosted this show, this will be the third time I have featured Jimi Hendrix (shows 5 and 51). Tonight is my 83rd live bootleg show and I'm close to slowing down. I have thousands of shows from hundreds of artists, spread across dozens of genres. I live to share these shows with you, free of charge. They have been shared with me, and I am thrilled to pay it forward (so to speak).

Let's start off with some boogie from the Jeff Beck Group, circa 1968, featuring a very young Rod Stewart on vocals, along with Ronnie Wood on bass, Mickey Waller on drums and of course Jeff Beck on guitar. The first is a full show from their set July 24, 1968 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. This is a remastered edition, which has been phase corrected and cleaned of all glitches and digi-noise. I recall buying "Truth" on LP back in the mid-80s when I was a teenager, and that album blew my young, fragile mind. It still does.

This has the best sound quality of this group in existence. Jeff is on fire, and we get to hear Jeff sing more than any other live show I know of (not that that is neccessarily a good thing). "The Sun is Shining" is worth the price of admission alone. Also, Let Me Love You has a great swing to it, and Jeff's Les Paul tone is awesome.

Our headliner tonight is the one and only Jimi Hendrix Experience, from the LA Forum, April 26, 1969, showcasing the late guitar icon at the height of his abilities. It features the original Experience lineup with Hendrix on guitar and vocals, Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums, just in time for what would have been Hendrix's 80th birthday (Nov 27).

What a brilliant show from a band at the top of its form. There are a ton of posthumous Hendrix releases, but I think you're going to have a near impossible time finding something that is going to top what you listen to here tonight.

Another year has come and gone. And what have we to show for it? A few new masks, a few new variants? Some new vocabulary...like "variants". How did you spend this past year? What are you looking forward to in the next year? The midterm elections? Woo hoo! ugh.

Let's step back to two classic New Years Eve shows that deserve your ears. 

Starting off is an excellent, albeit too short lived blues band: The Blues Brothers, featuring "Joliet" Jake and Elwood Blues, aka: John Belushi and Dan Ackroid of the Not Read For Primetime Players, from the original cast of Saturday Night Live. I have serious history with this band. My dad bought their debut LP, "Briefcase Full of Blues" when it came out in 1978, and I quickly absconded with it. It is one of the few records that I have literally played to its demise. I replaced it a few years back, but lovingly kept the original. I should frame that in 2022. 

It was the Blues Brothers that started my on my love affair with cover tunes, and digging for the originals. This show is from December 31, 1978 at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, opening for the Grateful Dead at the closing of Winterland. It was a legendary night all around. This recording is an excellent Betty Board, recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson. It is so much fun. Research this band to get to know more about how they came to be.

The headliner tonight is the one and only Jimi Hendrix with the Band of Gypsies, recorded live December 31, 1969 at the fabled Fillmore East, in New York City. This is the second set from that night, and you can now find this officially released, and you should go grab it. It consists of four sets spread across two nights: December 31st, and January 1st, featuring Hendrix on guitar and vocals, Billy Cox on bass, Buddy Miles on drums and vocals. This is going to take you somewhere you prefer to be.

It's Memorial Day, so I'm going to honor the troops (of whom I have many as friends and former students) by sticking it to the man! I'm a strong believer in a strong defense. But I am not much for spreading Democracy around the world. I think we ought to practice what we preach, and allow nations to self-actualize as much as possible. We butt our heads (and arms) into other nation's biz a wee bit much over the years. And too many of our men and women in uniform have paid the ultimate price. I have no problem flipping the bird to the politicians who put our sons and daughters into harms way for the prize of land, labor, markets and other resources. I have yet to hear of one war we have been involved in that, at the heart of it, was about caring for human suffering. If we can't reap some reward, we aren't going in. Remember Rwanda? 

I believe to the depth of my being, if our nation cared so much about our vets, they wouldn't make up 50% of the nation's homeless population. Let's put as much effort as we do preparing them for battle, into preparing them for coming home. 

So here ya go. Two hours of stickin' it to the man.

So it's the middle of September, what do you have to show about it? Will another month go by before you get your ass up and finish all those projects you said months ago you would get to? What's your deal?!?!?

September is supposed to feel crisp; the smell of fall in the air. I think it's getting warmer? I also have to remember that I live in the Bay Area and our summer doesn't arrive until now anyway. Here come the warm jets! Let's hope they leave the orange sky out of it.

I celebrate my birthday month during the first hour with songs of September. Some are even hits!!! Don't tell my boss or they'll take my cool underground radio card away. Check out the live cuts in the first hour: Buster Poindexter??? Big Star???

The second hour is all about the late, great Jimi Hendrix, who passed away 50 years ago on September 18th. I was to pop out of my momma 12 days later on the 30th. That's right, I'm about to hit the big 5-0!!!

It's all good. I'm having too much fun to stop now.

Tomorrow, September 22, is my wedding anniversary. Saucy Hell and I have hit the magical seventh year of matrimony. Where has the time gone. I performed "Kathy's Song" on acoustic guitar, at my wedding reception (making certain not be nervous in front of all the amazing musicians in the room like Eric McFadden and Mark Growden). What a wonderful day and long night that was. I share a story about that night during my show. Be sure to take a listen.

Although Radio Valencia as an entity does not identify with a political ideology, we don't censor our DJs when it comes to them voicing what they believe in. When I was involved with San Francisco Liberation Radio (2000-2003), we were very vocal about our stance against the Bush administration and its march to war. We were so loud that it got us shut down by the FCC, with guns blazing. Fun times.

Monday night LawWorksAction.org streamed a 90 minute live reading of parts of the Muller Report, as recited by professional actors. I thought it important that as a show host/producer I have the responsibility to make this available to my listeners. I did not play the program straight through, beginning to end. Instead, I played to ~15 minute sections, peppered through my show.

When is the last time you read the US Constitution? Have you ever read it? Have you ever discussed it? Are you aware that every action that takes place in our nation has a direct connection to this document?

As for the music, it rocks!

It's another one of those nights where I just have to do a deeper dive into my cast library of music. There's something old, something new, something ripped off, something I don't think I've ever actually listened to before.

That's fair, isn't it?

Should a DJ give a listen to EVERYTHING before they play it for you? How much preparation do you require from your DJ? How OCD are you, anyway?

I used to know a DJ at a former station I was at who would spend hours writing out his playlist. We hosted four-hour shows at this particular station. I would watch him work meticulously on his playlist. Draft after draft. He would write down songs/artists, and then scratch some out and and fill it in with another. I would tune in from time to time and could really appreciate the effort, but it also felt a little stiff. Maybe it was his mic breaks, but it never felt that authentic to me.

More often than not I'm inspired by the events leading up to my show, and I pull my music a few hours beforehand based on this. I enjoy playing new music more often than not, but I also love peppering some older "library" tracks in for good measure. Some shows, like the one from two weeks ago, take on a life of their own, and I get inspired during the show itself. Thank goodness I bring along my trusty external HD with 100GB of music.

A Season in Hell #169: Blood Moon

San Francisco doesn't need any full moon's to know it's a crazy town. Its rich history speaks for itself. From Mark Twain, to Emperor Norton; from Vincent Hallinan to Jim Jones, San Francisco has always been a place where creativity, social justice, underworld crime, psychedelia and the pHreAk scene meet to get neat, while pounding out a sublime beat.
I love that tonight is the Blood Moon lunar eclipse, and that it's too foggy in SF to actually see it. Oh, but don't you fret, for the savors of us all, those with the GLASS, will be certain to be looking at the skies telling GLASS to take it all down for posterity, for us weaker fools who cannot (read: will not) "rise" to their level of being in with the technology crowd.

I would rather miss the Blood Moon, than have blood on my hands for what is happening to my beloved town. I've officially called this city my home since February 1997, when I moved in with my former wife, but I've lived in the Bay Area since I moved here with my family in December 1982; spending most of my years in San Mateo, but trucking up to the City every chance I could get to hit shows at the I-Beam, the Nightbreak, Full Moon Saloon, The Stone, Paradise Lounge, DNA, you name it, I was probably there from 88-present. I love this city. I've loved this city. Is there still a way to love it some more?

I love having local bands in the studio, and The Y Axes made my night.

Now here's a young band, with a fresh pop sound, that's making it in the post-record label era. Let's celebrate young, fresh bands! I swear, if I could have hastened the death of the record label sooner I would have.

They have a CD release party at Bottom of the Hill this Wednesday, March 20th, for their EP Moon Rock.

I'm without my computer tonight and to be honest, I'm scared.

So I played all vinyl tonight. And damn, that was fun. I have a lot of music to choose from, so if i don't have my iTunes to keep me warm, the smooth, scratchy sounds emanating from my LPs will keep me toasty indeed.

As always lots of genres to enjoy. Some themes as well, including a set of ROCK that the Melvins have covered, but by the original bands! How amazing is that?

IT'S TIME FOR ROCK FIGHT 9, BITCHES!!!!

I am so going to kick Ron Donovan's ass tonight! I can almost taste it. Er...the win, not his dirty, Hobbit ass. ew

For five years Ron and I have gone mano-a-mano in a battle royal of bootleg mayhem. We have so many live shows between us, that the only way we have a chance to listen to them is when we do this show.

Ron has generally sucked at this show. He always brings in lame 70s classic rock, or poor audience recordings, which he proceeds to do air guitar jerk-off leads to. Poor guy.

I, on the other hand, have stellar soundboards, of kick ass ROCK!, which will blow your earholes our, and pop your corneas off. Good stuff.

We have some bands come in, and always welcome listener interaction.

Local band, Illogistical Resource Dept. came by to share some of their amazing music. The interview was tip top notch. Check out their music and then go buy it.

Live Evil stopped by to talk about their Tuesday night show at the Knockout in SF. These guys are almost dirtier than I am.

Following all of this, Ron and I paid tribute to the 50th anniversaries of both the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton.
