Since there isn't a holiday for Hell Day...yet, I figured I should pay tribute to all the great laborers out there who never get the appreciation they deserve. 

I've hosted a lot of Labor Day shows over the years, and I think it's my favorite holiday to celebrate. I've been a union member for most of my working career, being a teacher, and before that in the grocery industry. At the age of 21, I was a shop steward at a grocery store I worked at. I was a member of the Union Building Committee at the school I teach at for nine years, meeting weekly with the administration, keeping them true to the contract. 

I have never had a hard time speaking truth to power. If I have learned anything it's how to finesse how I articulate the message that's needed to be said; all of which in support of the workers. 

I will never cross a picket line. 

The music tonight is all in celebration of the workers, most of whom are paid far below their value. 

I shared a lot of worker history during the show as well. I'm guessing you aren't aware of a lot of the what I spoke about.

Don't like the way you're treated at work, then join a union.

June was Black Music Month. I took Monday night to play a number of Black Power music. Honestly, I could host a weekly show of this and not nearly scratch the surface.

Some of this you'll recognize, but I bet dollars to donuts (mmmm donuts) you haven't heard it all.

I shared some Soul, Funk, R&B, Hiphop, Reggae, Dub and Jazz. I then pivoted to some brand spankin' new Redd Kross, that may be my favorite record of theirs! No kidding! Also, some new Shannon and the Clams and recent Iggy Pop. I close out the show with a little tribute to Kinky Friedman, who passed away last week.

Once again, i'm back in the studio every Monday after hosting live in the studio every other Monday for the past year. It's so much fun doing this show every week. I really feel that I can get into a better groove for you. Pun intended!

Enjoy this holiday this week, regardless of what the Supreme Court ruled this week. In the words of the brilliant Apu Nahasapeemapetilon celebrate the birth of the country by blowing up a small part of it.

Mondays are fun days...for me. I was realizing I have been hosting a radio show Mondays 8pm since 2000, when I started at San Francisco Liberation Radio. SFLR's history is a rich one and I encourage you to check it out. In short, it was started by Food Not Bombs. They were upset that their arrests for feeding the homeless weren't getting enough media attention, so member Richard Edmondson started the station in his van. Eventually it ended up in his apartment in the Richmond District.

I was working at Trader Joe's in Daly City when I saw a shopper wearing a SFLR t-shirt. I had to inquire. They hipped me to the station, I made a call, and started there a few weeks later.

The rest, as they say, is history. And what a history it is, including the raid by the FCC using SFPD. We were a very politicized staff. And we were a pirate radio station, so it was only a matter of time before the Man came knocking. Or more like battering ramming, which they did.

We fought the good fight, and even set some precedent in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Because of our fight urban areas are allowed to file for low power FM (LPFM) licenses. Before our case against the feds, the FCC policy only allowed rural areas to file for a LPFM. Yay SFLR!

I left there after the raid, ended up at Pirate Cat, then FCCFree, and eventually built Radio Valencia, all hosting the Monday 8pm slot. Time flies.

As for this show, it's more of what you have come to expect: diverse, and leaning punk. But there's quite a bit more than that, including a couple sets from a new member of our staff: The Archivist, who will be on Sundays 8-10pm Pacific. Coincidentally, he used to be a student of mine many moons ago. He has excellent musical taste, which has nothing to do with me. 

There's a tribute to Wayne Kramer, who passed away last week, and a happy birthday to Bob Marley. 

Oh, one final comment about Mondays: the Giants have a winning record on Monday nights. True story.

Having a chance to play these tunes for you brings great joy to Hell. There's a lot of blues in the first hour, and the blues always lifts me up! Give your ears a chance to get used to something new. I read another article recently that spoke about how people get set in their musical ways by the age of 32, and most of that music is what they were listening to in high school and immediately after. 

I'm about to turn 52, and ten of the tunes I played tonight were new to me over the past six months or so. I mean seriously now. I get that we're busy. I understand that for many music just runs in the background (I actually don't understand this at all, but I know not everyone can be as obsessed with music as I am), and I get that life keeps on keepin' on. I guess that's why I will always be a strong proponent for the power and magic of non-commercial radio.

It's DJs, who have the power to program their own shows, that give you a chance to sit back and enjoy the aural ride. Let us do the driving, so to speak. That's ok. I don't mind that. As a matter of fact I get really excited about that. Just listen to my mic breaks! 

A few notes about this show: Tom Waits is celebrating the 20th anniversary of both "Blood Money" and "Alice", so you get a taste of that. Some new music from Spain's Podium, new sounds from Ty Segall and Fantastic Negrito, as well as a premier from local guitarist/producer/engineer Myles Boisen, who will be on my show in two weeks, on Monday, August 22nd. Tune in.

You are also going to want to tune in next Monday, August 13th, 8PM PDST for my guest, rock photographer Jay Blakesberg, who will be in the studio talking up his latest book. I cannot wait for this interview. I have been a fan of Jay's for many years. Check out his stuff and tune in.

Every year leading up to my Annual Annual, I suffer and strain to decide on a year I want to focus on. This year was no different. Do I want to reach back pre-1970? How about something a little more recent, like the lost year of 2020? I asked for suggestions, and a bunch flew my way, but the one that really stuck came from my buddy, and teaching colleague, Eric, who suggested 1978. The emergence of English post-punk, metal was evolving, funk was redefining itself against a backdrop of too much disco. There is a lot to choose from when it comes to 1978.

I took at least a week to pour over my options. In the end I sat with approximately four hours of music to fit into about an hour forty minutes, mixed with talk and highlights from the year. I tried to mix it up, and keep you on your toes. I really appreciate all of the many comments that kept coming during the show, and I'm sorry I didn't take any requests. Shows like these are pretty well mapped out by the time I flip the switch.

If this show had legs it would have found a few dozen dance moves to throw down. It doesn't have this ability, but don't let that stop you from getting down. Black History Month or not, every one of these artists deserves every award they have won, and many more they hadn't. 

You have no excuse but to strap in for a real good time.

And do not even get me started about the bullshit that is out there, coming from racist white assholes about the need for a White History Month. EVERY MONTH IS WHITE HISTORY MONTH!!!! For Christ's sake, the entire history of our nation has been written by white people. Blacks get the shortest month of the year. February was chosen because of the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. I get it, I get it. But until we make serious amends with our original sin, this country will never heal. I'm a proponent of paying reparations to Blacks who can show they are direct decedents of slaves. I also believe we need to do the same to Indigenous Americans. Hitler and the Nazi's learned how to control their population based on our treatment of native tribes and Jim Crow laws, post Civil War. 

We have a lot of work to do.

The second hour has a Bob Marley birthday set. He would have celebrated 76 years last week. Any excuse to play more Bob Marley.

In the meantime, enjoy these two hours. Many genres, all great music.

There are good shows, and then there are shows when I am truly inspired. And tonight was such a night. And I can honestly say it was all about you, the listeners. So many great comments and inspirations. It's like I jump start the show, and then you all chime in, getting me to go farther than I thought I could!?!?

Maybe I'm just excited to be losing 280 pounds on January 20th? I don't know, but this was a fun show to host. 

So this is a new dawn, yes? How are you going to approach it? What are going to do differently leading into the next four years? What are your hopes and your fears?

There are so many opportunities standing there in front of us. Let's not lose focus on what makes us great. And let's allow music to be a binding force for good.

If it were up to me, and it is, I would be playing Iggy all night, every night. I mean, right? Right? I'm literally having the hardest time even conveying to you how much I love, and I do mean LOVE every tone Iggy Pop has produced over these past 50+ years. 50+ years! And he still is kicking ass! 

Tonight at 6pm (Pacific) I'm featuring an Iggy and the Stooges show from their comeback tour in 2003, featuring the Asheton brothers, Mike Watt and bass and Steve MacKay. This is an incredible soundboard recording from an exceptional show.

In the second hour, I'm featuring one of my all time favorite Bob Marley and the Wailers shows. It's from his 1975 tour, in support of Natty Dread. This is live at the Boarding House in San Francisco, and originally broadcast live on KSAN - 94.9FM. These shows were small and intimate, to the point that you could here the crowd pounding on the walls and stomping on the floor, a common show of appreciation for Reggae acts. There's plenty of pounding happening here.

A little bit of this, a little bit of that. I'm not one to really reminisce much, but when it comes to music, it's all about reaching deep to connect the rich past with the progressive future. What does it matter what genre is played, as long as it gets played up against something that just feels right, right? Right.

In my early days of radio, when I was just a green newbie at KFJC, I recall the debate: play nothing but the newest of the new, and the edgiest of the edge, versus the need to add a taste of "accessible" sounds to hold the new music together like glue. I subscribe the view of the latter. If you tune in regularly, than you know that I always enjoy finding something new to share with you. You also know that my library runs deep. I can't wait to play that "classic" you never knew existed, or haven't heard in so many years, you forgot that you loved it.

That's how I roll.

In my most recent show it is indeed about going deep to blend genres and emotions, to take you on an aural journey into the night (I am on 8-10pm after all). New music from Oh Sees and Mikal Cronin, along with some covers that you'll be searching for as soon as you hear it from me.

I'll admit it, I have been guilty of purchasing an LP from time to time because of the cover. This doesn't mean I didn't want it for the music, it was the cover that pushed me into making the purchase. Recently, my daughter Little Lauson Hell asked me to show her my favorite LP covers. Talk about making her daddy proud! I took my time to consider the criteria: a great cover isn't just the art, it can also be the story behind the music, the artist, that time, etc. It can be a stark, minimalist cover, such as "Something Else", by Cannonball Adderley, or a robust cover like "Bitches Brew", by Miles Davis. 

As I was taking her through the journey, I had to pause and remember this wasn't about showing her my favorite albums, some of which have crap covers. This was about the covers themselves. I spoke to her about growing up buying vinyl, laying on my bed staring at the cover, and reading the liner notes. I get as excited today as I ever have purchasing new vinyl. 

So far her favorite covers were the three picture discs for Altamont (Dale Crover side project).

Which reminds me, even if we can't patronize our favorite local record shop, we can still purchase straight from the labels and the bands. And a reminder that Bandcamp will be hosting their first Friday again, July 3rd, when all proceeds go straight to the artist. They are also having a fundraiser on June 19th (Juneteenth), where all proceeds go to the NAACP. Buy great music, support the artists, and support a great cause. I know I will.

Many of you know that I am a social studies teacher in San Francisco. Specifically I teach Pre-Law, American Democracy, and Economics in a thematic pathway for the past 16 years. I have read and studied the US Constitution for longer than that, and I can attest that it is a comprehensive social contract, that cannot be mastered in one, two, or twenty readings. Before you read a political headline and think you know what the Constitution has to say on the matter, please take the time to do your research, including what the US Supreme Court has to say on the issue.

Sometimes I just need the music to do the talking. I. Am. Pissed. Aren't you? What fresh kind of hell are we living in today? Unprecedented, unhinged, fragile masculinity, a show of strength, phony religious grandstanding, narcissistic mind fuck, controlling the news cycle. He thinks this is all a TV show and he's the star, and WHY DON'T YOU LOVE ME??????MOMMY??????DADDY????????

Someone needs a hug.

This show is all about protests and revolution. I have been to my share. There is so much I could have played, and isn't that telling? I also chose some important speeches I hope you'll find interesting and important during this time of struggle. Malcolm X, Angela Davis, MLK Jr. Mumia Abu Jamal all have something to say about protest and revolution. 

And we thought the pandemic alone was going to define 2020? We're not even half way through the year, and there's an election in November, if we can keep it.

OK, so someone posted this fabulous YouTube clip recently of every sample used in Paul's Boutique (though I think a few are missing), and I of course just had to track down each and every sample, 99 in all. I already had about 60 of the tracks, but the hunt for the remainder has been fun, nevertheless. And you, my dear listener, are the one's to benefit from this scavenger hunt. This is why you tune in, right? Right.

Anyway, I start the second hour with eight tracks used to sample "Egg Man" and then follow it up with said Beastie Boys track. I'll be doing this for each of the tracks on this classic LP in the weeks to come. Tune in and enjoy.

I also took this holiday show to share some longer and stranger tracks as you can see from the playlist below. I picked up a couple of James Brown/JBs LPs this past week, as well as some 80s and 90s punk 7"s . I also close out the show with a few live cuts that I think are worthy for your ears. If you're playing the LDB game (and why would you?) then you better stop following the Abbey Lincoln track. Then again, the Lou Rawls version is my favorite LDB produced.
