When I prepare for an interview with a musician, it's mostly based on their music that I craft the questions. I want to know where the ideas for the stories came from. I want to know how they crafted the song, where the melody came from. Then I start to dig. I need to know their influences, musical and otherwise. 

This is when it gets fun. 

Tell me where you grew up. What was the first music that caught your attention? Who in your life do you credit with turning you on to the music that helped define your own journey? 

Once in a blue moon do I interview someone I've only met a few times but feel a quick kinship with.

Mitch Polzak is one of these people. I've seen Mitch play at the Ivy Room in Albany a few times, and once on his home court in Port Costa, where he once was mayor. 

Mitch will look you right in the eyes when he's playing, and you know he's playing just for you. And he is! He told me this himself last Monday when he was my guest. I told him that he had to guest DJ with me, and he did not disappoint! He brought 33 LPs along with him and everything that aired on Monday night was his choosing, except for my opening set and the single Mitch Polzak tune that I pulled out, and it's thanks to his delightful partner, Amanda, that "Sugrarfoot Rag" was chosen.

We caught each other saying "you too?!?!" a lot during the show, and a lot of laughter throughout. The

music ranges from delta blues, bluegrass, folk, Bakersfield Country, train songs, trucker songs, and honky tonk. 

What a magnificent night this was.

How about another radio show where I play music that you never knew you needed? I like that idea. In a world where AI is telling you what to wear, watch, vote for, battle, digest, laugh at, point at, throw away, be disgusted towards, why not allow yourself a little freedom to listen to music curated by someone who digs in the crates to bring you something NOT generated by an algorithm?

At least while it's still legal to.  

Don't you get the feeling that we're going to come to a point where we'll decide on the ballot to allow our tech overlords to determine what we think?

Personally I don't believe in free will. True. I don't. I get to make my choices based on what's sitting in front of me. Not making a choice is still a choice. Isn't that a lyric somewhere? Thank you, Rush. 

So, all this being what it is, why not listen to some music that I had the "choice" to play for you tonight.

Highly inspired by Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, my first hour is chock full of Americana nuts, and other aural legumes. Nothing spectacularly new tonight, which is a rarity for me. You may have noticed I've taken to adding the album and release year on my playlist. Eventually I may even get to linking to wear you can buy it! I think I used to do that back in the day...when I used that choice to do so.

In the meantime, use your choice and listen to two hours using your own free will and I'll see you on the other side.

What team are you on: play only the most subversive sounds that may draw in listeners hungry for something new and challenging, but may push some away? Or are you in the camp of play a lot more accessible sounds so as not to push too many listeners away?

I struggle with this, week-to-week, as I'm putting my shows together. I really want to turn you on to music you've never heard, that is knocking me out, but I also know that if I play too much subversive sounds, I may only end up with my mother listening. She really digs that Throbbing Gristle (HA!).

Really though, if you had your choice, which kind of radio show are you more likely to stick around for and tune into each week.

I aim to please, which still pushing your comfort zone.

That was not meant as a euphemism, but you know...

In the meantime, I think this show won't cause any anxiety any time soon. New King Gizzard, OSees, Redd Kross, and Linda Lindas. Newly released remasters of John Lennon and Alice Cooper. Newly found recordings from Johnny Cash and Neil Young.

Last Monday I had some bug up my butt about playing a bunch of local punk and then the whole thing went sideways, as it should. I'm a creature of habit and my radio habit is to keep myself guessing as much as you. I bring a stack of vinyl and throw something on. It's not rocket science! But the fun comes when I have to figure out what I'm going to play next. 

If I'm having a special or a tribute, then I have an idea of what I'm going to play set-by-set, but even writing that I'm giving myself more credit than I deserve. Really, I just throw a record on and let it direct me; sometimes it actually works!

Tonight I started out with some 70s punk, thinking it was going to rule the night, before I took a left turn with Sonic Youth. Then I wanted to get to current garage-psych-punk, so check out San Luis Obispo's Pancho and the Wizards, who I saw open for Australia's Psychedelic Porn Crumpets at The Independent a few weeks back.

Then I jumped back to the punk with classic San Francisco's Pop-O-Pies. I was crate-digging at a store I will not divulge, and grabbed this treat. Hot damn, it's a fun one.

I opened the next set with a gift to my little one, Bodhi. He's six years old and obsessed with steam trains, and that's putting it lightly. The Amtrak conductors know him by name. I'm not joking. I used to tale him to a local station to watch the trains go by almost daily for three years. He wants to rebuild old steam trains. I truly believe that he believes one day he will do this. Adorable. Anyway, I played his latest jam: "Wreck of the Old 97", as sung by the late great Johnny Cash. 

I hate this song now. Don't tell Bodhi

After a couple Americana and Swing tunes I jumped back into the subversive punk, before celebrating Jello Biafra's birthday with a few tunes. 

I closed out the night with some of my more preferred garage-punk from the past few years.

Why did I write all this? No real clue. Just started typing and here ya go.

The weather outside is frightful but the music is so delightful, so since you're stuck inside anyway, might as well tune in, tune in, tune in.

It's that time of year once again when I choose one year to focus two hour on. My Annual Annual is a great opportunity for me to go deeper into the music for a particular year, playing music for you that really deserves to be rediscovered. I started this show in 2011 when I wanted to go deeper into one of my favorite years for music: 1971. What a year, indeed! Following that I took one show every November to host this special. Below you can find the links for the previous 11 episodes.

Monday night, 8-10pm Pacific is all about 1968! I was considering hosting a Bay Area only 1991 show, but after chatting with a radio colleague about the greatness of 1968, I just knew that was the year for me! 1968 was a great year for Acid Rock and Psychedelic Rock. My fear is I'm not going to have nearly enough time to share with you everything I want to. This may take two weeks!

Don't expect this to be a Top 20 show. That's never been something I would do. I won't select the playlist until I'm on the air. I like to be listening to a song to direct me to my next track. I can share a few of the artists I'm bringing along for the ride: Jimi Hendrix, Moby Grape, Silver Apple, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly, Traffic, Pink Floyd, Os Mutantes, Soft Machine, Fifty Foot Hose, Mothers of Invention and so much more.

I swear I am not phoning it in, but there are weeks that I think I could have done better by you. I think I did pretty well tonight. I'm mixing it up, I'm surprising even myself! And I love the comments some of you are throwing my way.

Yes, where else are you going to hear Jefferson Starship, Black Sabbath and Ice-T all in the same show? Where indeed? Certainly not in local commercial radio stations. 

Full disclosure: from time to time I have been known to button push on the car stereo. I may even stop on commercial rock station, formerly known as KSAN, which now goes by the unfortunate moniker "The Bone". So sad. Recently I was noticing that of the ten songs I heard (I was driving for a while, OK?) not one of them was newer than 1978. 1978! What are they thinking? Who needs this? And then there's Dave-FM "Totally Random Radio". Yes. Random. From AOR all the way to MOR.

I promise never to insult your ears. I also want you to take more risks with your music listening. Start by enjoying more Radio Valencia. Then stretch out to KFJC, KALX and WFMU. There are so many brilliant non-commercial music stations across the dial (terrestrial and otherwise).

You can do no wrong with Johnny Cash. He's cool as cool can get, and I think there was a time that he knew it and he liked it. Then I think he grew to a point that he knew it and couldn't care less. That in itself is universally cool. This performance shows him at a point in his life where he is standing on top of the world.

By 1976 Cash was able to afford to take his entire family on tour with him and get them all on the stage. Considering he married into the famous Carter family, it was the least he could do. This show features a few duets with his magnificent bride, June Carter Cash, as well other members of the Carter clan in tow. The quips between songs are enough to get any semi-Cash fan onto the bus.

Jerry Garcia learned how to play the pedal steel guitar in 1969, so he needed a band that he could showcase this talent. Enter the New Riders of the Purple Sage, featuring three buddies of Jerry's: David Nelson, John "Marmaduke" Dawson, and Dave Torbert. Mickey Hart and Phil Lesh were in the first incarnation of this band. Former Jefferson Airplane/Starship drummer Spencer Dryden taken over on the skins after Hart left. 

This band preceded bands like Poco, The Eagle, The Doobie Brothers, and we a hell of a lot more loose and fun. This is barroom drinking in Bakersfield country. This is taking your lady (or fella) out on a Saturday night to drink and dance. And you get to hear Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar!

There's something about hosting a thematic special that really gets the juices flowing. I don't know if this was really a special, but I stuck with one genre for the most part on this show. My fabulous daughter, Little Lauson Hell tells me she doesn't like Country music. To which I respond, you just haven't really heard good Country music. Like anyone with musical taste, commercial anything is usually crap, that's goes double for Country, but there have been some real treats in the history of this genre. I merely scratched the surface by playing some of my favorite artists. And it's not hit-heavy as you will see.

And I didn't program this show chronologically. So there.

And we've made it to Christmas Day!!! How the Hell did that happen so quickly? Seriously though, with all of this staying at home crap since March, one would think this year would have crawled by? Time always seemed to flow when I had to commute most days, pay the bills, do the dishes, and repeat. I've been home since mid-March, and December came in like a limping, gasping, clawing gazelle, after having been chewed on and spit out for the rancid meat that COVID and Trump's allies turned 2020 into. 

What kind of fresh Hell is this?

So let's stick with this musical lane for the next two hours shall we?

As you will see below the first hour contains a fistful of holiday music that is as off-kilter as yours truly. And isn't that why you tune in in the fist place? The second hour is something else entirely. I really enjoyed the entire show, but the two hours are as different as Christmas is to Hanukkah. Take that for whatever you think it means.

If you live in the Bay Area of California, you really owe it to yourself to take a drive to either Christmas Tree Lane (Thompson Lane) in Alameda, or Chestnut Lights (Woodside Court) in South San Francisco. Regardless of your religious beliefs, the creativity that went into these houses is worth the trip. There are a number of other locations to go check out. Here's the link for a bunch of them.
