Well Hell, here we go again. There was a time, from the age of about 5 - 30 that I really thought I wanted to be a professional radio DJ. I loved the thought of playing my favorite music for a wide audience. If you grew up in the 70s and 80s, then you loved your local DJ, who you thought was programming their own shows. 

Silly me. And silly you if you thought they had total autonomy. I learned by the age of 18, when I was interning at KRQR that it was up to the Music Director, or Program Director what was going to be played. They also told you what you were going to say. 

DO. NOT. DEVIATE.

Damn.

Still, I wanted in on the game. The way I figured, it was more about me calling the shots after I'd been there 10-20 years. And I wanted to be there for life. By the time I left KRQR I knew I wasn't going to love all of the music being played, but I also thought I would have more say about programming once I was in the chair. 

I couldn't have been more wrong about that.

I ended up a button monkey (board op) at Alice-97.3 (KLLC). Coincidentally the same station that was once KRQR. This time I actually had a show. Still, here's what you play and here's what you say. And after the Telecommunications Act of 1996, companies began buying up the competition, so there was no need to take the risks they once had.

This was in 2002. And this is when I decided to leave my dream of corporate radio dominance behind for the greener and much more poor pastures of non-commercial radio. I was actually still at KFJC when I was at KRQR. And I was hosting a show at the now-defunct pirate station San Francisco Liberation Radio when I was at Alice-FM. You can take the boy out of the subversive medium, you can't take the subversive medium out of the boy. 

Once I left KLLC I dove head first into SF non-comm/pirate culture, and I'm glad I did.

I may not host a daily radio show, but that also means I don't have to pretend to like the Eagles and AC/DC, or some pop crap. Can you even imagine?

My air name would probably be something like "Mike Alan". HA!

At least I can sleep peacefully knowing that all the Music and Program Directors have been replaced by Spotify and AI. 

I'm not bitter. I'm a DJ who programs their own show and you get to benefit from that. I guess I really am living the dream.

Words won't do this justice. Have you ever heard Alice Coltrane? Have you ever hear OF Alice Coltrane? One could call her the widow of the late great, Jazz pioneer John Coltrane, and that would of course be true, but it doesn't do her justice. 

Alice Coltrane is deserving of her own genre-leading, genre-bending titles. She was no coattail rider. Alice Coltrane was a force! 

Alice Coltrane (née McLeod; August 27, 1937 – January 12, 2007), also known by her adopted Sanskrit name Turiyasangitananda, was an American jazz musician and composer, and in her later years a swamini. An accomplished pianist and one of the few harpists in the history of jazz, she recorded many albums as a bandleader, beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s for Impulse! and other record labels.^[1] She was married to jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane, with whom she performed in 1966–1967.^[2] One of the foremost exponents of the "spiritual jazz" style, her eclectic music proved widely influential both within and outside the world of jazz.

This performance tonight was recorded at the Berkeley Community Theater, Berkeley, CA, July 23, 1972, featuring Alice Coltrane (Harp, Organ, Piano), Charlie Haden (Bass), Ben Riley (Drums), Aashish Khan (Sarod), Pranesh Khan (Tabla), Bobby W. (Tambura [Tambora], Percussion).

This comes from a rare 2LP vinyl bootleg released in 2019. The sound is excellent for a boot, supposedly a soundboard recording, no other details. the performance, on the other hand, is incredible. The sarod/tabla duet parts are just the icing on the cake. Considering this is a vinyl bootleg, you will hear fade out/fade in following each track.

Following up this gem of a show was no easy task, so I'm not really going to try to one-up it. Instead I have something you have never hear before: an unreleased Tony Williams Lifetime recording from 1974, AKA "The Stockholm Sessions". This lineup, sometimes knows as "Wildlife" features Tony Willams (Drums), Jack Bruce (Bass), Allan Holdsworth (Guitar), Webster Lewis (Keys), Laura "Tequila" Logan (Vocals). 

I would have given anything to see this lineup perform live. Side note, I saw Tony Williams funeral procession drive down Junipero Serra Boulevard when he passed away in 1997 at the young age of 51. Shoot, that's my age. Damn.

If you're like me, you get bored really easily. Surprisingly I'm not that bored these days. Granted, it's like Groundhogs Day over here, and my hygiene is questionable, but I have plenty of things to take up my time. After all, I have a toddler running around the house. And there a lot of music to enjoy. I know the first place I want to head to when all of this is past us is to any one of the many local record stores in my hood. Please please please reopen. I have been doing my part from home however. I have bought some records, digitally, and even a few LPs I hope are delivered before this pandemic passes. The record business is essential, isn't it?

So, we're moving into month two of this thing. How have you evolved as a being during this time? Respond in the comments with your most creative creation. I'm reading more for pleasure, playing my guitar, and using leftover food in ways I never though could be done. Food is art. Who knew?

As for this show you are about to listen to (and thanks in advance for doing so), it's still about diving deeper into my digital library. It seems that I have an awful lot of music on these hard drives. And you're better for it.

The only downside to hosting a radio show from my bedroom is the energy is not nearly the same as when I'm rockin' out from behind the studio console. I'm more quiet because I have a toddler being put to bed in the next room. He really needs to learn to just deal with the volume, right? Thanks.

You just never know what you never know, so stop worrying yourself to death about the unknown unknowns. You don't know what you don't know and you don't know how to articulate it.

This and much much less on my recent Monday night show. Just take a look and a listen and you too will discover that nothing, and I do mean nothing beats the tremendous amount of disappointment you are about to endure. You'll be heard to say "well, I can't get those two hours back", and "I never realized I needed something less".
