For the new year I thought I would take a time out from new music and delve deep into my music library. I have to admit this was one of my favorite shows to host. Certainly my best of the year. HA! Every week my audience appears to grow. Thanks so much for the support, and please keep tuning in every Monday 8-10PM. Be sure to tell music lovers everywhere!

This year I want to focus on interviewing more bands, so if you're in a band or know someone who is, please contact me and let's make this thing happen. I also want to host a special on the history of West African Funk. There's so much beyond Fela that I really want to share with you. I also plan on bringing back an old favorite which dropped by the wayside: Bootleg Blast! This is where I share my latest live show that I've discovered. This will happen in the second hour so stick around. There's a tasty live treat in this broadcast, actually. Later in the year I'm hoping to also resurrect "Rock Fight", where I host a 4+ hour live bootleg battle. My buddy, and legendary sound engineer John Karr will try to best me. Let's see how far he gets. Look for this show sometime this summer.

Finally, it's time once again for my annual "Run for the Lilies" contest, where you dear listener send me the names of 10 famous people you believe will meet their demise by the end of this calendar year. Back on the air after a month away. I don't care to take so much time away from the aural pleasures that radio brings, but it had to be done. I traveled with my wife and daughter up to the great Northwest Territories! By that I mean Vancouver, Seattle and Portland.

I won't share the clusterfuck we got into at SFO when they wouldn't let my 11 year old daughter fly without a passport. Needless to say, we made it to all of our destinations, albeit about $1000 less in our pockets than I would have liked. ugh

We spent two days wandering around the EMP in Seattle. If you travel to that great town, please do your self a favor and go there. If you're a music fan, and I know that you are, you won't regret it.

Voodoo Donuts are overrated. There, I said it. Who the hell needs a Cap'n Crunch donut? Besides I live in San Francisco. We have Bob's. I do love me some Portland though. I will most likely retire there and start a radio station. HA!

On with the show.

The first hour pays homage to my late teens and early 20s. Spending time at the EMP inspired me to go back and listen to items on my shelf that may have collected a bit of dust.

The second hour is full of some tasty and rare surprises. A "new" Betty Davis LP issue of an oft-rumored Miles Davis-produced session was worth the wait. I have some new Melvins in there, as well as a number of live cuts from the likes of Tom Waits, Dave Bromberg, Allman Brothers.

I also blather on about the election, and croon about how much I love you.

Next Monday night, Little Lauson Hell makes an appearance. Tune in 8-10PM every Monday night!

Music is sexy.

My show is full of so many artists that I love and genres that I enjoy. There's something for everyone. Unless you like house music. There's no house music. So I guess if that's all that you enjoy, house music, then there isn't anything here for you to enjoy. My most humble and gracious apologies.

A Season in Hell #157: Time For The Radio Generation

Happy New Year! Back on the air after 3 weeks off.

I've been reading "From the Velvets to the Voidoids", and it's got me all in a tither about music from the East Coast and Midwest, circa 1969-1979. I've always enjoyed this era, but haven't known too much about the inner workings and incestuousness of it until now. WOW! Get this book. Starts with the VU, heads over to Detroit to cover the MC5 and the Stooges, before heading down to Cleveland, and back to NYC. So much to enjoy. And with that, it got me wanting to share the music of this time and place with you.

I've also got a few SF garage rockers for good measure. There was a recent story in the SF Weekly (a rag I used to hardly touch, but since the way the Guardian has gone down hill since their sale, AND because my dear friend Sherilyn Connelly writes for them, I give them a chance to win me over. Covering Radio Valencia in a recent issue helped) about the garage rock scene in SF (or what's left of it since Ty Segall left for LA, and Thee Oh Sees are on hiatus). Anyway, the article reminded me of a few other fine bands still rockin' it out in SF, including CCR Headcleaner, who I play tonight.

This show rocks, and I think you'll agree.

I was thinking about the "Velvets" book I'm reading and it reminded me of a few other books that you should have in your library, if you enjoy rock-journalist biographies by era. I recommend that you check out the following:
"Our Band Could Be Your Life", by Michael Azerrad
"England's Dreaming", by Jon Savage
"Please Kill Me", by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain

These are all excellent and essential reads, and you'll run out to grab all the music that you read about and (re)listen to it all with fresh ears.

Fun show tonight with special guest, local comedian Bert Divietri. This guy is off his rocker. He played some prank calls for us, and was an all around freak-a-zoid. I'll have him back for sure.

We were also graced with the presence of guitar maverick Eric McFadden. He owed me a favor. No, really, he did. That's the only way I can get anyone on my show anymore. It's just short of extortion. Anyway, Eric ROCKS! He told some great road stories from his recent tour with Eric Burdon and the Animals, as well as updates on T.E.N., featuring bassist Norwood Fisher (Fishbone) and drummer Thomas Pridgen (Mars Volta).

Here it is the first official show of the holiday season, and other than things like Black Friday and Tech Monday, it's all about the music.

I'm so totally psyched to have former Radio Valencia star DJ, Mikl Em of Can Haz DJ. Mikl, like myself, is a total music nerd. Once you get us started it's hard for us to stop. And like me, he's into every genre imaginable. The idea of doing a two hour show with him, though limiting, was impossible to pass up.

We made this a concept show. We open up with music we're listening to now, followed by music that inspired us as we were children. There's some teenage "angst" in there, as well as music from our college years, breakup songs, and road songs. We feature some musical heroes, female power, and finally a holiday treat for those so inclined. I think you'll like our choices on the latter.

The banter is whimsical, and Mikl even shot video footage of us, live in the studio. We need to do this more than once a year.
