Well, January arrived, so I figure I better pull out what I bought last year and give all a spin. 

King Gizzard released its 26th album in 2024. And what an amazing show they put on at The Frost. Dale Crover came back from neck surgery to record and tour with Redd Kross, put out his third solo album and 27th with the Melvins. I can't wait to see them in April and again coming up in June. I love me some Melvins!

Nick Cave seems to be emerging from his deep grief-stricken period with Wild God. I'll be seeing him in May. Great albums from Billy Strings, WAND, Ty Segall, OSEES, GOAT (so many bands using allcaps?!?!?!), Shannon and the Clams, and more!

Monday night I'll be back with new music and music that's new to you.

Tune into the station you have come to rely on to play the best of whatever genre you're into.

This is one of those times when I really count my blessings. Everyone has their struggles, so don't let me start getting into my own. Does any of it really matter? No. None of it matters. Holding a grudge does nothing but take the time away from having a really good time. And isn't that what we want: to have a really good time?

Why suffer? What does it bring? What have we gained by our own suffering? Experience? Isn't there any other way to grow? I've learned more lessons than blah, blah, blah. Is this what life is all about: learning lessons so as not to repeat the same mistakes over and over again? What if I learned a lesson, put in my best effort, asked all the right questions, opened myself up to scrutiny and vulnerability, articulated my boundaries, and still tripped?!

What then?

Throw it all away? Remain alone for the sake of caring for my heart? Risk appearing aloof or uncaring just so I don't have to clean up a mess that I worked diligently to avoid happen in the first place? We're not a solitary species? But what's so bad about being alone? I have my music to keep my warm. Even the kids grow up to live their own lives.

Enjoy the moment. That's all we have. Meditate on that. You can do your best to make up for the past. Take accountability even when it feels impossible. Make amends. Speak your truth with the most compassionate head and heart. Be the best listener. Ask the deeper questions. Be vulnerable and available for the criticisms that will come your way (and they will come!).

Prepare for the future, knowing as hard as you do, life has a way of throwing a lot of curveballs at you. Be calm through the storm. Flow like water. Respond, don't react. Breathe. Always breathe. And know that everyone else is going through the shit too.

All we have in now. It's only now. It's always now. Bring your best now. Now. And do not beat yourself up if the best you have now is not the same as what others are bringing. Never compare yourself to others, ever. You'll lose that battle. So don't do it. Rise above that. You're not rising above others, you're rising above the idea that others are above you. No one is above anyone else. We're all treading water in our own way. Our job is to do it as calmly as possible. Don't fight the waves. Don't fight the tide.

Flow like water.

Forgive.

Love.

Be. Here. Now.

And listen to good music.

I have a hankerin' for a 7 inch special, so here ya go! This may be my third such special in the past decade or so. I can't be expected to remember all of this, thank you very much. HA!

The original idea of the 7 inch single, going back to the 1950s had to do with record labels not thinking the 33 1/3 long playing record was worth investing in. The labels commodified the music industry early and knew they were more likely to turn a profit if they could identify one song to sell to a public hungry for entertainment. 

By the 1970s the idea of a single had changed. The A-side was always about the "hit" and the B-side was often something special that wasn't going to appear on the full record. They Beatles always put out 12 song records on Parlophone along with a two-song single that didn't appear on the LP. 

For the world of the independent artist the single may be the only music they released. A lot of the songs I play tonight haven't appeared in any other format. 

There are a lot of gems here, so take a listen and please share with music fans in your life.

I don't know what got into me but whatever it was I just had to get it out during this show. It's almost exclusively from the golden era of psych and rock and roll from the late 60s until about 1974. And it's a mix of European, Middle Eastern, and Latin American bands. Thee Oh Sees and Dungen are both in there so you can hear their influences. This was such a fun show to put together, I think you'll enjoy each tune. 

I'm guessing you haven't heard of most of these bands. I talk them up between sets, so if you're looking for any info, listen up! It's a safe bet I haven't played 85% of these artists on my show, ever. And I'm talking since my start in 1988. OK, maybe 75%. Oh wait, 65%?

I also gave tickets away to another epic upcoming show at the Bottom of the Hill in SF. If you live in the Bay Area and you want to go see a show, you should be tuned into Radio Valencia regularly. Many of our shows have tickets to give to you! Or you! Or maybe even you!

Tonight was a really special show. I was lucky enough to have Bay Area metal violinist Emily Palen of KnightressM1 on the program talking up her latest collaboration: Othered, as well as new KnightressM1 material.

I first witnesses the prowess that is Miss Emily Palen, when she graced the stage supporting Eric McFadden at Ivy Room back in 2019. Her mastery of the violin is evident, and how she shows this mastery in on entirely different level than any violinist I've ever seen. I was mesmerized. 

Starting on the violin at the age of four, Emily dedicated herself to the instrument, K-12 and into college at the University of Michigan. Following the path of classical music is a strenuous commitment and Emily took some time off to reflect on her musical future. Finding herself living in the Bay Area, Emily took this opportunity to also change the direction of her music, choosing to break out of the confines that Classical keeps you in, and found musicians to jam with. Over time she found herself attracted to Metal (not too surprising considering many excellent Metal musicians have a penchant for Classical), and adding some effects to her violin, along with some powerful lyrics centered on her own life's journey and the world she sees around her, created the dynamic superhero that is KnightressM1.

Emily can tell the story much better than I. She was with me for most of the night sharing new music from her collaboration with Henry Austin Lannan, aka: H.A.L. under the Othered title, as well as new KnightressM1 and music from the 2020 release: "Dreams and Devastations". 

Othered will have a rare performance at Eli's Mile High in Oakland on Friday, April 15th.

I was told by a dear friend that I'm not a bad guy, I'm just not all that good either. HA! I love it! That's Hell for ya. I'm just pretty good at being pretty bad. And I enjoy laughing at that, and myself, often. I birthed John Hell in August 1994, when I co-founded Radio Free Burning Man. I'm sure I wrote about this somewhere else on this blog. We were all KFJC DJs and I didn't want to use my airname, Reverend Dah Wave, for the event in the desert. So I needed another moniker. 

I had seen the Rowdy Roddy Piper film "Hell Comes to Frogtown", a post-apocalyptic tale about a guy who survived the devastation and now needs to save all of these extremely hot women (of course), being held in captivity by the Frog King. I love Rowdy Roddy Piper. He was always my favorite wrestler. Pipers Pit was the best part of WWF on Saturday afternoons. And "They Live" will always be a classic. "I've come to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum". I mean, come on! Anyway, I thought Piper's name in "Hell Comes To Frogtown" was John Hell. And I thought "Hell YES!", what an excellent name for RFBM. Ends up his name was Frank Hell. That's super lame. No. So John Hell it was and it shall remain, even if Discovery Channel decided it was too adult for their precious little cable outlet and changed it to "Helle" for the four hour "Power Tool Drag Races" special. Whatever, I got paid. 

Initially I was thinking Hell would be all in your face; especially for Burning Man. I was purposely insulting to the organization, just to keep them honest. Now that John Hell about to turn 27(?!?!?!?!) he's much more reserved and sly. I like to poke fun in a more political manner, and to myself. Just what you've come to know and love. You do love me, don't you? (crickets)

As for this show, lot's of new music, Kate Vargas, the Scientists, Angel Bat Dawid, Gojira, Negativland, and Oh Sees. And everything else is gravy. 

Also, you get a treat, one of my oldest and greatest friends is about to start a brand new show Wednesday's 10-midnight (Pacific) on Radio Valencia. His moniker is The Alchemist. The show is a mouthful: Conflux Cornucopia Cerebellum Cocktail Hour! The Alchemist is a walking musical encyclopedia. I know you're going to dig his show. He took over a couple sets in the second hour of this show. I marked it so you know. You're welcome.

And we've made it to Christmas Day!!! How the Hell did that happen so quickly? Seriously though, with all of this staying at home crap since March, one would think this year would have crawled by? Time always seemed to flow when I had to commute most days, pay the bills, do the dishes, and repeat. I've been home since mid-March, and December came in like a limping, gasping, clawing gazelle, after having been chewed on and spit out for the rancid meat that COVID and Trump's allies turned 2020 into. 

What kind of fresh Hell is this?

So let's stick with this musical lane for the next two hours shall we?

As you will see below the first hour contains a fistful of holiday music that is as off-kilter as yours truly. And isn't that why you tune in in the fist place? The second hour is something else entirely. I really enjoyed the entire show, but the two hours are as different as Christmas is to Hanukkah. Take that for whatever you think it means.

If you live in the Bay Area of California, you really owe it to yourself to take a drive to either Christmas Tree Lane (Thompson Lane) in Alameda, or Chestnut Lights (Woodside Court) in South San Francisco. Regardless of your religious beliefs, the creativity that went into these houses is worth the trip. There are a number of other locations to go check out. Here's the link for a bunch of them. So it's the middle of September, what do you have to show about it? Will another month go by before you get your ass up and finish all those projects you said months ago you would get to? What's your deal?!?!?

September is supposed to feel crisp; the smell of fall in the air. I think it's getting warmer? I also have to remember that I live in the Bay Area and our summer doesn't arrive until now anyway. Here come the warm jets! Let's hope they leave the orange sky out of it.

I celebrate my birthday month during the first hour with songs of September. Some are even hits!!! Don't tell my boss or they'll take my cool underground radio card away. Check out the live cuts in the first hour: Buster Poindexter??? Big Star???

The second hour is all about the late, great Jimi Hendrix, who passed away 50 years ago on September 18th. I was to pop out of my momma 12 days later on the 30th. That's right, I'm about to hit the big 5-0!!!

It's all good. I'm having too much fun to stop now.

Tomorrow, September 22, is my wedding anniversary. Saucy Hell and I have hit the magical seventh year of matrimony. Where has the time gone. I performed "Kathy's Song" on acoustic guitar, at my wedding reception (making certain not be nervous in front of all the amazing musicians in the room like Eric McFadden and Mark Growden). What a wonderful day and long night that was. I share a story about that night during my show. Be sure to take a listen.

WOW, this show sucked. And let me tell you why.

I had this grand idea to stream from my backyard, where we have new patio furniture. I thought, how fun is this? I get to chill out in Hell's Lounge and play my favorite music just for you. But it didn't take into consideration a few things:

1. My neighbors can hear everything I'm saying on my show, and they think I'm talking to them and keep asking me what I'm doing.
2. The mosquitoes want to be in on the act. OUCH!
3. It got dark and I have poor lighting out there.
4. It took me 10 minutes and three tries to connect to our server and it dropped me about 30 minutes into the show, the moment I went inside to grab an extension cord.
5. My external hard drive was on its last legs and any sudden micro-movements would disconnect it, leaving me with dead air. 
1. It turns out that it was a combination of a dying hard drive AND a dying USB port.

I sure wanted to enjoy this show. The playlist is diverse and dynamic, but alas the mic breaks are lame. 

Seriously though take a look at that playlist. Damn. 

My upcoming show is all about revolution. You really should tune in wearing all black.
