Radio is seduction. I like seduction. it just feels good. And who doesn't like to feel good. And this here show just keeps getting hotter and hotter until it climaxes in just the perfect way at just the perfect moment. And like any good seduction, there are twists and turns, a pull back here and there, a tease, a touch, a tickle. And throughout there are hints at what's to come. 

Not go give anything away, but I should have worn gloves. 

Every time I have Daniel from the FabMab into the studio I'm afraid the turntables are going to catch on fire. The banter, the wit, the inside jokes! All of it is worth it when you get to hear what we both brought in for your pleasure to night.

The anticipation is just killing me.

I found that I was drawn to jazz and soulful international music this past week. Someone recently asked me how I prepare for my shows. I've written about this before, but I think it bares repeating. I don't host a specialty show, or genre-specific show, so I play whatever feels good, week to week. It's true, I often default towards the punk or garage, but even that's more rare than one would think. I'm a huge Deadhead (more of a Dead fReAk) but you're not going to hear them too often on here, and I think that's because they're such a heavy in my everyday life, that I use this show to focus on the other music that turns me on.

And there's a lot that turns me on.

I also like to keep you guessing. I was driving home after my show listening to KALX, and the DJ was playing an excellent thrash punk track, and followed it up with something that was neo-classical. I swear I almost pulled over to call and thank him. I applauded in the car, while driving. True story.

I feel that it's the responsibility of DJs at independent stations (Radio Valencia, KFJC, KALX, WFMU, KEXP, etc) to push the limits of what we have become comfortable with; not just what the listener is used to hearing. I take pride in a lot of what I share with you. 

I do have my guilty pleasures, however. Even in this show I played a few tracks that I've shared over the years. It felt right at the time. And I will probably do it again. 

But now I'm inspired to keep taking the risks that I should. Next week prepare for thrash metal to be followed by folk, followed by electronica. I can do that. You can't stop me.

Speaking of next week, it's my 600th show at Radio Valencia!!! I think I want to have a party. Wanna come? You need to bring snacks.

I just got back from New Orleans with my daughter, Spawn of Hell. We were there celebrating her 21st birthday, and I could not think of a better place to take her. I love this town! So much great music and food. The weather wasn't too hot or humid, the beignets were powdery and fluffy, the cocktails were flowing, the gumbo was steamy and the crawfish étouffée was delightful.

NOLA is a walking town, and we put that to the test. We walked 10
miles on Saturday and another 7 on Sunday. Most of our walking was through the French Quarter, as well as up and down Frenchmen Street hitting up as many of the clubs as we could.

I think my finest memory will always be us walking towards Frenchmen Street and she says she hears a band that sounds familiar in the distance. We walk towards the music and it turns out to be one of her favorite bands of the past couple years: Dirty Rotten Vipers. She was over the moon! They were playing on the street and the crowd was very enthusiastic. We also made our way over to the Blue Nile, a club I like to visit when I'm in town. This is the same club I met my brother-from-another-mother, and brilliant singer/songwriter Adam Mackintosh. I shared that story here and it's worth your time.  

I digress.

The band was a funk/jazz ensemble that featured a drummer that was getting pretty lit, but never dropped
the beat. The main cat, who played trombone and sang, asked for anyone celebrating a birthday to get on stage, so Spawn and four other women made their way up while the band celebrated them all. Just look at that smile on her face!

We spent some time in Algiers Point, where Memphis Minnie lived and wrote "When the Levee Breaks", which I open the show with.

Did you know the first pharmacy in the United States was in New Orleans? I didn't know this either. They have a museum in its place now. We took the tour. We also toured the Museum of Death. If you like serial killers this place is for you! We were hoping for a bit more science-related information around death, but alas, sensationalism ruled the day. We also went to an excellent haunted house inside a former mortuary. I give it four stars. If I was a teenager that hadn't seen as many horror films as I have, I would have been scared out of my wits. All that said, we were spooked good. Spawn insisted that she go in front during the three floor tour, knowing that a jump scare was expected around every corner. They were good for that.

I've been wanting to take my daughter to NOLA for her 21st birthday since she was 12, and we're both so happy we went. Excellent people, food, music, drink and views. It's a beautiful city. Get there. Have fun. You're welcome. More pictures at the bottom of this post.

My first hour was inspired by our trip, but is in no way NOAL-exclusive. Lots of roots, blues, soul, jazz, hiphop and funk, before I segue to some singer/songwriter, Americana/Punk, lo-fi, and a tribute to Donna Jean Godchaux, the former singer from the Grateful Dead (1972-1979) who passed away last week. I got to meet her when Jerry died. Her son Zion used to date a dear friend of mine, and when Jerry died, Donna came for the memorial in Golden Gate Park and we all went together. I write about it here.

Starting out Black History Month with a BANG! Sweet sounds of funk and soul punctuate more than the first half of the show, and I know I'm going to have to keep this going all month. And why wouldn't I?

Growing up I was always put off that Black History Month was during the shortest month of the year. I thought it was an insult to African-Americans! Being a history teacher I learned this started out as Black History Week by Carter G. Woodson in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. It is in February to commemorate the birthday of Abraham Lincoln.

I've got some classic soul and funk peppered throughout the sets. 

The second half of the show features some library adds (meaning not new, but new to me), including the first Shannon and the Clams release, French Punk/New Wave Plastic Bertand, early Barbara Manning World of Pooh and more.

It's always a pleasure bringing music to you, week after week. I truly live for this. Your contributions help keep Radio Valencia rolling. We are wrapping up our very first "on air" fundraiser, which has brought in $2000+. This is a really great start, and we will use each dollar to pay for upkeep of the equipment, purchase new tech, pay for streaming and website needs, and any emergencies that pop up (and they always pop up).

Monday night I was thrilled to welcome sex, intimacy and relationship coach "Shameless" Heather Atles into Hell's Kitchen. Having researched Heather, and knowing a bit about her background. this promised to be an entertaining interview. 

We spoke about everything from shame resiliency and pleasure mapping, to the importance of mindfulness in intimacy. She touched on common patterns and dynamics with her clients, who range from singles to traditional and non-traditional couples, and polycules. 

The topic of mismatched libidos came up, as well as jealousy, and the difference between rules and boundaries. I think my favorite part of the night was talking about erotic intelligence, thank you very much.

What was planned for one hour spread across the entire two hour show, with some apropos music
sprinkled in between, so we could come up for air. 

I think you're going to enjoy this as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you.

Standing in the newly painted Radio Valencia studio really fills me with pride, and inspires me to put on a quality show for you all. That's not saying the other weeks were phoned in, it just feels like I walked into a brand new studio and I'm really jazzed about it. 

Radio Valencia is a collection of jocks who have come together to play our favorite music for you. Some of us have been at this radio game a few decades now. RV has been going strong-ish since 2010. Having a storefront location this last year has been a huge boon for us, and we're now in a position to make the most of it; hence the facelift. Big thanks to the Tuesday night crew, Culturefest's Lilly and Joe. These two really went all out. I don't think the attached pictures do it justice, but they'll have to do. When I walked in Monday night I could have sworn the studio was actually bigger than before!

Tonight's show had a lot of emotion throughout it. New music from Emily Clark and Fanstastic Negrito. There's a 45th anniversary expanded edition Bob Marley, and a build up to this weekend's Mosswood Meltdown in the second hour. And George Carlin speaks about a timely issue beyond the grave.

I brought so much fabulous vinyl into the studio tonight, just to find the turntables were out of service. Ugh. No bueno. luckily I also brought a handful of CDs and a packed hard drive. Not to worry, I'm always prepared.

I'm reminded of my earliest days in radio, starting at KFJC in late 1988. I was trained by the magnificent and wacky Hell 'n' Hairspray. She alerted me to the need to always be prepared. Have a few CDs cued up, just in case what you want to play doesn't. Good advice. 

On Monday night I still found a way to share lots of new music, including Iggy Pop, Death Valley Girls, Psi-Psonics, and Brigid Dawson. I also pay tribute to the Funk Goddess, Betty Davis, who passed away last week at the tender age of 77. Did you know she wrote a new tune back in 2019? This was news to me. Listen to it in the second hour.

I was also excited to find some music I haven't listened to in quite a while, as I was hunting through my CD collection for a few items. You'll really get a kick out of "Tommy In Seven Seconds" by the Vital Records gang. Thanks to Jim Fourniadis who ran the label and was also guitarist/singer for the New Jersey punk outfit Rats of Unusual Size. What a mench! 

There's something here for everybody. You really do need Radio Valencia in your life. Turn off that commercial radio dreck. It'll take years off your life.

I really shouldn't wait until someone dies to pay tribute to them. This past week the legendary lady of Funk, Miss Betty Davis passed. She has been out of the public eye for many decades, but will forever be remembered for being way ahead of her time. Though she was married to Miles Davis for a short time, and is credited for genuinely updating his style, she would have made her mark without him. What a huge talent. 

In my many years of collecting I have only ever found this one Betty Davis show, from July 25, 1976 in "Riviera '76 Festival Jazz-Rock", Circuit Paul Ricard, Le Castellet, France. This is an audience recording that I tweaked a bit to enhance the volume. Honestly I would not be playing this if it were anyone else, but she really deserves this attention. I think it's very listenable and incredibly enjoyable.

The headliner this evening is the one and only Meters. What a great band, through and through. This show from October 1, 1976 at The Kingfish Lounge in Baton Rouge, Louisiana is a real treat. You can feel the small size of the venue. It's almost as if you are in the room with them. I love the announcement before the end of the show that they are headed to San Francisco following the performance. It's as if they're asking everyone to send them off with well wishes. I'm really excited for you to hear this great soundboard.

There are times that I really want to send a sternly written letter to some commercial radio station, reminding them of the disservice they are doing to their listeners. It's almost as if they are some junkie pushing tainted drugs. The user doesn't even know there are quality drugs down to the left end of town (or in most cases left end of the dial). In this case on the left end of the internet. 

But why write a letter when I can just share this show, right? Should I send this show off to the program directors of the top commercial stations so they can see how much better they can be (that sounds pretty egotistical, and I didn't even need to reread it), or shall I just go to where their listeners hang out and offer them a better bang for the buck. 

Allow me to bang you. Bang you all.

It was tax day on Monday, so there are a few tunes that fit some kind of money theme, but other than that, I'm all over the place in a good way. Well this is embarrassing. I should have had this up for you days ago. I really have no excuse. It's not like I go anywhere. I don't commute anymore. I don't go see people. I don't go to shows, or out to restaurants, or even for many walks. I'm mostly in front of this damnable machine for too many hours a day. Maybe that's why it didn't get done: the lack of motivation?

I love hosting my show every week. I would host a daily show if I had the time to do so. Work and family does take precedent, don't ya know.

If this show had legs it would have found a few dozen dance moves to throw down. It doesn't have this ability, but don't let that stop you from getting down. Black History Month or not, every one of these artists deserves every award they have won, and many more they hadn't. 

You have no excuse but to strap in for a real good time.

And do not even get me started about the bullshit that is out there, coming from racist white assholes about the need for a White History Month. EVERY MONTH IS WHITE HISTORY MONTH!!!! For Christ's sake, the entire history of our nation has been written by white people. Blacks get the shortest month of the year. February was chosen because of the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. I get it, I get it. But until we make serious amends with our original sin, this country will never heal. I'm a proponent of paying reparations to Blacks who can show they are direct decedents of slaves. I also believe we need to do the same to Indigenous Americans. Hitler and the Nazi's learned how to control their population based on our treatment of native tribes and Jim Crow laws, post Civil War. 

We have a lot of work to do.

The second hour has a Bob Marley birthday set. He would have celebrated 76 years last week. Any excuse to play more Bob Marley.
