How many ways am I supposed to say it, you do not get nearly enough good music in your diet. I want you to promise that if I drop off the face of this Earth, that you are going to commit to listening to quality music on the daily. And you need to mix it up. You can't just stay with the same genre, you know? My suggestion, when you go record shopping and you purchase three or more records make at least one from a genre you aren't used to. Trust me, it's a great way to build your collection while broadening your horizons.

I know that my international collection was built in this way. And I never would have discovered the richness of African Funk if I didn't stick to this method. And one artist leads to another, and one unheard of genre leads to another. My dad always said there's no reward in life without risk. I have always taken that to heart, in ways I'm not ready to discuss on this blog. I can attest to the fact that taking a risk on music is always a good thing. Except that hair metal band, Cinderella. There was no redeeming qualities in that band, none. Winger either. Nope. Sorry. None.

As for this show right here, I think the sets speak for themselves. I was in a real dance mood in the first few sets; really funky. If you haven't heard Mdou Moctar, then you haven't heard one of the all-time greatest guitarist there is, alive or dead. Seriously, he's up there with Hendrix and Van Halen. There's new music from Japan's Kikagaku Moyo, who are on their final tour right now. A show I cannot attend because I'm going to be in Yosemite. Lucky me. I gave tickets away in the second hour to Diane Coffee. You really need to check them out. The entire lineup is in the last half hour.

Lots of new music for you that isn't much of a risk. Perhaps I need to get a bit more edgy next week? Tune in.

How do you feel about Jazz? Not into it? Indifferent? Turned off? Jazzed?! As a genre, Jazz gets pigeonholed into something akin to Classical. And I really think that's because it's no longer the POP music of America. Jazz is the most American music of all. That, and Blues. And maybe Gospel.

If there were no Jazz, there would be no Rock, R&B, Soul, or Funk. And like these genres, Jazz cannot be all thrown into one pile. It's not all about brass instrumentation. And it's not all about free-Jazz stylings like Coltrane and Coleman. 

Jazz has many flavors.

Tonight I feature two groups, both of whom thrive on improvisation and exploration. And both are cover bands! You know how much I love covers.

First up is New York City's own Sex Mob. This quartet, which started out as a part time side project for slide-trumpet player (yes you read that right) Steven Bernstein, has become his major musical vehicle. Surrounded by stellar players Briggan Krause (alto sax), Tony Scherr (bass), and Kenny Wollesen (drums), Sex Mob takes songs you know and "love" to an entirely other level. Good luck figuring out exactly what it is they are covering. Bernstein's banter between songs is hilarious. You really need to see them live to appreciate the onstage antics. I have seen them about a dozen times between 1996 and 2018, all in San Francisco. I'd like to thank KFJC DJ, Andy Cadaver for turning me onto these fellas.

Set two features a San Francisco quartet that lived a short and magnificent life: TJ Kirk, featuring Scott Amendola (drums), Will Bernard (Guitar/Slide), John Schott (Guitar), and Charlie Hunter (8-string). They play the songs of Thelonious Monk (T), James Brown (J) and Rahsaan Roland Kirk (Kirk...obviously). I was lucky to see a few of these shows back in the mid-90s and I can attest to the brilliance of the musicianship, as well as the arrangements.

Happy New Year, to you all! How did you celebrate the completion of one of the top 10 worst years in the history of our nation? I sat at home and watched the Melvins NYE special. Thanks fellas, that was a hoot!

Tonight was a night of firsts. I have never played Hank III before. Nor have I played Jake Blount (thanks Derlyn!!!), nor has Larry Boothroyd been played on my show as a session leader, though I have played plenty of Victim's Family in the past. And though Buddy Rich has graced these "airwaves", this record with Alla Rakha has never been on, though I look forward to sharing more from all of these artists in the future.

As for what 2021 has in store, it's all about this Georgia special election that's happening on Tuesday. I predict the two Democrats will win by slim margins. I also don't think the GOP candidates will do as well as Trump did. If the two Dems do win, I have to wonder how much sway Trump will have with the House and Senate GOP members with the electoral certification on Wednesday? By the time you are reading this, it'll probably be long over. How close were my predictions?

Well here I am, week four of this shelter-at-home, and I'm finding I'm not that bored. I just want to go record shopping in a record store. Oh don't get me wrong, I have plenty of music to keep my going, and I have purchased a few LPs online, and ever took sweet advantage of the recent Ripple Records download deal. WOW! But there is nothing like walking into my favorite record stores, thumbing through the new arrivals, chatting with the clerks about what they are enjoying, searching the 7" sections, checking out my very long want list, and looking to see if is hidden in the stacks.

I love how stores are willing to order for me, but part of the fun for me is to see if a record like Money Chicha has shown up, just so I can get that deep feeling of satisfaction for finally landing that long sought after LP.

There's a ritual to the whole process of record buying. I think only crate-diggers really know what I'm talking about. I used to be a club DJ in San Francisco, and I used to shop for 12"s weekly. Damn, I had a lot. It actually felt pretty good to unload those about a decade ago when I started up Radio Valencia.

Speaking of Radio Valencia, we have a new home. The lease is about to be signed, and since we're in a shelter-at-home and cannot move in yet, our new landlord is willing to hold off on rent until we actually move in. Thanks landlord, you rock! And we cannot wait to rock very soon in our new digs. Details are coming once everything is secure. But after ten years and our fourth home, I can promise you when I say this is going to be the absolute BEST home for Radio Valencia. I hope we're here for years to come. And you can even come hang out there with us!!!

As for this recent show you are about to enjoy, it's a deeper dive into my digital library. It's large, but I miss playing my vinyl for you. There are a few live treats in there, and even some brand spanking new Ty Segall. He covers Harry Nillson on a new EP.

I may try to host a show between my Monday night show, featuring my live library. I have over 4000 live shows from over 500 bands of many genres. And with all this sitting around the house, I'm downloading multiple shows a day. As of this writing I have a PIL show from 1982 and a Germs shows from 1978 downloading. And I have over 1000 Grateful Dead shows too. Maybe I should log into a separate slot just to play live Dead?

Hmmmmmmmm.....

That's enough for now. Time to enjoy two hours of Hell's Kitchen Radio.

I'm sleep deprived, so don't hold me too accountable for what follows. ...I'm trying hard to think of something witty to say. Hmmm. Who knew sleep was so damn important?

Ah yes, my show this week! I was able to get to my Fats Domino tribute. You probably only know him through his seminal hit "Blueberry Hill", but his sound helped define early rock and roll, rhythm and blues, with a touch of jump swing. His stride piano style was always evident in the New Orleans sound, whether he was playing one of his own songs of love and heartbreak, or a carefully chosen cover. I grew up in a household where my dad (born 1941) played a lot of blues, jazz, and rhythm and blues. Fats played a central role in my early musical development, which I'm certain I didn't realize until he passed away a few weeks back at the age of 89.

The balance of my show features new music from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (their third full-length release of 2017!) and Boris. There's some long noisy jams via Aluk Todolo, a jazzy cover by Sex Mob, a "weird" cover by The Residents, stoner spacey jams from Sleep, and an Op/Ed from John Lennon. There's more as you'll see below. Also, I gave tickets away to see Fu Manchu. Did you know that I often have tickets to local shows I give away on my show? You didn't?!?!?! Tune in and WIN!!! I've been hosting a radio show on and off since about 1990 when I was at KFJC. I never counted the number of shows I hosted there, but between 1990-1997, probably over 1000 weekly shows. Those were great times, and by far the best education I could have dreamed of. When I started Radio Valencia back in 2010 I had no idea how it might grow and how long we would be around. Monday night I hosted my 300th show, not counting the many specials I've done. What a fun milestone this is.

I started off the night with 15 minutes of Facebook Live, which I'm still not totally comfortable doing, but at least it's a way for my family to see me in action. HA! My guest, managing editor of local magazine "Haight Street Voice", Linda Kelly spent the rest of the evening with me talking about the importance of having a regular publication in the city that supports local voice, whether they be citizens, homeless, merchants, artists, musicians, or whomever. Linda knows her history of the area like the back of her hand, and wants to use HSV as a medium to bring people together of various backgrounds, all of whom share their love of the city, and the Haight specifically. I concur. It was a fabulous interview. She turned the mic on me in the second hour, asking about my thoughts on show 300 and where I'd like to see Radio Valencia go in the future.

How do you spell love? I spell it H.E.L.L. but that's a good thing. And hot too! On my show tonight it was all about love. Just take a look below. Have you ever been in love? Romantic love where it's all hot and heavy and you can't keep your hands and genitals off one another? Where they're on your mind 24/7 and your just know this feeling is going to last forever? You know what I'm talking about, right? That feeling where there's just no one else on this big blue-green planet that can even understand how amazing your love is? Your love is larger than all the loves put together. And you both love the loving love that you love to loving give?

And then there's the practical love. The love that is supposed to continue to grow once the romantic love that was never ever going to fade because they love me more than anything ever, and they are constantly turned on by me, excited to hear about every little mundane moment of my mundane day as if I just survived 30 days in the Outback (not restaurant, but then again that too sounds like torture) and come back to tell the tale. The love that says "put the toilet seat down", but what they really mean is "I love you from the bottom of my heart, but if you leave that toilet seat up one more time, then you are not ever getting any more of this (at which point they're just pointing to their genitals)".

How many break-ups have your survived just to tell yourself that the next relationship is going to be the ONE?!?!? Have you begun to realize that it really is about the merging of two people who are totally turned on by the other for a finite amount of time, but given the chance may be able to evolve this deep friendship (please be best friends with this person, really) into a partnership that can survive the day-to-day "please put the dishes in the dishwasher" existence that requires you to set aside your ego.

And that's it really, we need to leave our ego at the door. And we need to be a HUGE cheerleader for our partner. That's what we want from them even if we don't say it out loud.

So love is HELL. It's hot, and it's cumbersome at times, and it's loud, and it's unruly, but out the other side can be something truly wonderful. Climb out of your fairytale and into the reality what love can really be. Oh, and listen to my show while having hot sex. Why not? Couldn't hurt.

OK, I've got to be honest with you. After all, you've been here with me, week in, week out for all these long years. How could I ever lie to you? Actually, that's not very difficult seeing how I don't ever actually look you in the eyes, and they say you can really tell if someone is lying to you by looking them straight in their eyes. My older sister used to tell me that my pupils were dilating if I was lying to her. I think that was a lie, come to think of it. Huh.

Anyway, this show was from October 10, 2016 and I never took the time to do a write up and post it. how very rude of me. You take the time to listen to my show, the least I could do is take some time and post the archived podcast of it so you can download or stream it over and over again. I know that you are just dying to have this on your hard drive so you can listen to my voice and choice of music years after the apocalypse. And why not!? Good for you!

So it may already be April 2017, but damnit this show is just too good NOT to share! I can't recall what I spoke about on this night, but looking at the playlist below it looks pretty tasty.

By the way, I have plenty of other shows I have yet to post. I really do need to do something about this lazy streak I have in me.

Have you tuned into the "new" KFOG? And I thought they were bad before! Seriously, it does not appear that they have evolved into anything fresh and new! Good job, Cumulus. You fired DJs who cared about the local listeners, all the while playing crappy, lowest-common-denominator pablum, that they had no choice over. I swear I would LOVE for any GM to call me up and ask me to program a station for just one day. ONE DAY! There is too much quality music that KFOG has continuously passed by. Father John Misty? Jenny Lewis? Dave Alvin? COME ON! Lame KFOG has just proved once again why you NEED Radio Valencia. You already knew that though.

Let's start a petition to get KFOG to hire John Hell for one day to do its music programming. If they hate it then I'll quietly leave. If they love it, then I'll have my lawyers call theirs.

Next Monday you just know I'm going to have a lot of rare Prince to play for you. RIP Purple One.

A sweet array of musical treats for your consumption tonight. No bands, just you and me. And just take a look at that playlist! Garage, Jazz, Hip Hop, Punk, Funk, Psych, Avant Garde!!! How does he do it, folks? This is no KFOG lowest-common-denominator-radio.

It's also the 50th anniversary of the birth of the Grateful Dead, so I through down a sweet jam from 1970 in the second hour. I'll be featuring some choice Dead cuts throughout the year, so if that's your thing, tune in during the second hour, and I'll treat you to a tasty treat from time-to-time.

I saw two brilliant shows last week. I had the pleasure of finally seeing my man-crush, Ty Segall, at the Great American Music Hall. I could go on and on about his performance. It was loud and fun, just as I was hoping. I stood front row, center, at the stage, surrounded by a bunch of teenage girls, and a rambunctious pit just behind (and at times ON) me. Three supporting bands, including Wand opened the show. Go see Wand when they're back in town.

Saturday night, I headed up to San Rafael to Terrapin Crossroads (formerly the Seafood Peddler), the home of Grateful Dead bassist, Phil Lesh. His new band, Communion, was playing that night. At 74 years old, there is no slowing him down. They played 4 hours! Seriously, there is no way this should have been possible. This guy was supposed to be dead years ago. What a great band. Fabulous jamming. Wonderful set and setting. If you're into this, then get up there when you have hankering a for jam band dance-fest.

Get out there and support live, local music, and local independent radio.
