There are a lot of educators in Gaza who are suffering not only for their family but for the families of the children they teach. San Francisco Unified School district has a number of educators who have started a grass roots Palestine Solidarity Committee, where they are teaching one another about what is happening in Gaza and how they can support the teachers who are there trying to care for their students.

I have three members of this committee on my show Monday night, in the first hour, talking about the work they are doing and how others can join in.

You have distinguished taste in music. You only want the best. So why are you here? Just joking; I got what you need.

Often times I pull my music shortly before I leave for the station, looking for albums that I either recently purchased, or something I haven't listened to in a long time. There are also times I pull records that I haven't listen to quite enough, and figure I'll try out a track on you. That being said, these records rarely get played on my show. I don't really want to experiment on you that much. That wouldn't be fair. You want to tune into a show where the host actually has done the work for you.

I've trained countless DJs over the years. Though I impart upon them my style of programming, it's important that they find their own voice, as I did. Starting my radio life at the great KFJC (88-97), I was trained by Hell'n Hairspray, who shared her own wisdom about mixing accessible tunes with more challenging tracks. There were two school's of thought at the Fine 89: Mix it up so as not to alienate the listener, and push the limits 100% of the time, listeners-be-damned! I come from the former school. I like to push the limits from time to time, but I also don't want you all running for the hills, or to Dave-FM. HA!

On this show you get a mixed bag of sonic goodness. It's the 50th anniversary of Led Zeppelin's fourth release (untitled), I throw in a version of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" that you have never heard before, some folk blues from the deep south, Japanese psych, Detroit proto-punk, West Kenyan Guitar, Aussie garage rock, Detroit blues, and The Residents, along with many other tasty treats, fresh from Hell's Kitchen Radio.

If this show had legs it would have found a few dozen dance moves to throw down. It doesn't have this ability, but don't let that stop you from getting down. Black History Month or not, every one of these artists deserves every award they have won, and many more they hadn't. 

You have no excuse but to strap in for a real good time.

And do not even get me started about the bullshit that is out there, coming from racist white assholes about the need for a White History Month. EVERY MONTH IS WHITE HISTORY MONTH!!!! For Christ's sake, the entire history of our nation has been written by white people. Blacks get the shortest month of the year. February was chosen because of the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. I get it, I get it. But until we make serious amends with our original sin, this country will never heal. I'm a proponent of paying reparations to Blacks who can show they are direct decedents of slaves. I also believe we need to do the same to Indigenous Americans. Hitler and the Nazi's learned how to control their population based on our treatment of native tribes and Jim Crow laws, post Civil War. 

We have a lot of work to do.

The second hour has a Bob Marley birthday set. He would have celebrated 76 years last week. Any excuse to play more Bob Marley.

In the meantime, enjoy these two hours. Many genres, all great music.

It's nice to have a few weeks off to recharge one's batteries, but considering my weekly show is exactly what I use to recharge my batteries, I felt more empty than ever stepping into the studio on Monday night. True story. I had a few weeks off from work, since I'm a teacher, and you would think I would be traveling the southern continent, or spending many relaxing hours at home, sleeping in late, taking leisurely strolls in my hood. Yeah, you would think that. The truth could not be farther from this. Who am I to complain?

I did buy some tasty vinyl over the break, however. Some rare Grateful Dead, released between 71-75, and some blues LPs that I needed. Yes, needed. I need music. It's my drug of choice. I was thinking of buying some much-needed shoes over the holidays, but instead I bought a Muddy Waters LP, and a Sony Terry and Brownie McGhee LP. Priorities.

I don't have any resolutions for the new year. Resolutions are for suckers. I just keep on keepin' on and let choice be my voice. I should probably cut down on the sugary sweets. Sure, why not? I have switched to black coffee though. No more mocha's for John Hell! It's saving me money, which I can put towards my vinyl addiction, er...um obsession.

It's another one of those nights where I just have to do a deeper dive into my cast library of music. There's something old, something new, something ripped off, something I don't think I've ever actually listened to before.

That's fair, isn't it?

Should a DJ give a listen to EVERYTHING before they play it for you? How much preparation do you require from your DJ? How OCD are you, anyway?

I used to know a DJ at a former station I was at who would spend hours writing out his playlist. We hosted four-hour shows at this particular station. I would watch him work meticulously on his playlist. Draft after draft. He would write down songs/artists, and then scratch some out and and fill it in with another. I would tune in from time to time and could really appreciate the effort, but it also felt a little stiff. Maybe it was his mic breaks, but it never felt that authentic to me.

More often than not I'm inspired by the events leading up to my show, and I pull my music a few hours beforehand based on this. I enjoy playing new music more often than not, but I also love peppering some older "library" tracks in for good measure. Some shows, like the one from two weeks ago, take on a life of their own, and I get inspired during the show itself. Thank goodness I bring along my trusty external HD with 100GB of music.

I promised I wasn't going to go on a rant tonight. I almost got through the entire show too. It was worth it. But it's all about the music, right? That's why you tune in. You want to hear what I'm going to play, and in what order I'll be playing it. I get it. That's why I listen to quality radio programs, and often with a pen and paper at hand. I want to get excited about a tune I haven't heard before so I can run on out and purchase it, and perhaps get turned on to an artist that has deftly escaped my attention until now.

Recently, a friend of mine was telling me that I should contact a commercial radio station and ask for the opportunity to be their music director for one day. Yes, the music heard on most commercial stations, most of the time, makes me want to puke. Much of what I'm perplexed about is the order of their songs. They can hand me the list of all artists/songs they want played for that day and allow me to place it in an order that actually makes sense. Don't hold your breath for me to do this anytime soon, but I do like the idea.

I absolutely love interviewing bands. I've been interviewing band since my earliest days and radio in the late 1980s. And tonight I was most honored to have not only a super talented and original band, but a very entertaining and vocal interview as well. Royal Jelly Jive joined me in the studio, to talk up their new self-titled release as well as the record release party that just passed.

This six piece gypsy jazz, soul influenced menagerie, With solid and sultry female vocals, and horns to boot, Royal Jelly Jive are a sextet to watch out for. See them soon and a small venue, because it won't take long before they are hitting the big time.

The rest of the program highlighted some Hardly Strictly Bluegrass artists, some Bay Area soul/funk/punk from the 90s, and some classic hip-hop and rap, along with a few fun covers to boot.

A Season in Hell #126: Not-So-Stormy Monday

It was such a beautiful day, the sun was shining, the birds were singing, it's daylight savings time, so it's staying lighter later, and love is in the air. I can't think of a better time to play two hours of the Blues.

Oh, don't get me wrong, the Blues is not about feeling bad. The Blues is about taking all those feelings you have down in your soul and shouting it out to the world! I was born in a blues town, Toledo, Ohio. How, you ask, is Toledo, Ohio a blues town? During the Great Depression Toledo, Ohio has the "Great" distinction of having the highest unemployment rate for an urban area; over 85%. Talk about the blues!

I haven't lived there since 1981, but don't let that stop me. Oh no, no, no. I now live in the most expensive city in the US, San Francisco, and I make it on a teacher's salary, no less. I'm no martyr.

For a long time, when I've gone record shopping (yes, I said record shopping, as I still purchase vinyl, and I always will, thank you very much), I've made it a point, if I'm buying more than two items, to make certain that at least one is either international, country, or blues. Because of this I have a rather vast international, country and blues library. I buy a lot of records. That's one vice I'm proud to call my own.

I remember in 1978 when my dad brought home the Blues Brothers' "Briefcase Full of Blues" LP. I loved it from the start. I memorize every nuance of that record, and easily wore out that first copy. It was from that record that I was able to set out on an adventure through the history of not only the Blues, but the history of American music, going back to slave songs and gospels, as well as the history of Rock 'n' Roll. It's safe to say that my musical knowledge was birthed from the Blues.

So tonight it's all Blues. How happy I will be! You should recognize many of the names on the list, but perhaps not all of the songs. And vice-verse.

This show is a great history lesson. Get a pencil, write it down, and feel some love for the Blues.

The rain has finally arrived in the Bay Area, and with it the loss of the 49ers. Dang. I could go on and on about the 2nd year Williams, and his two errors, but he has enough to deal with without me harassing him. Poor kid. The Niners got farther than any of us fans expected they would this year, so for that I salute you.

It still sucks though.

And therefore I bring you tonight's show: Stormy Monday.

I was raised by a father well versed in the genre of Blues. It was often playing in the garage when my dad was working on his old cars. We even had a jukebox, packed with 45s, many of which featured old blues. I've MCd the Northern California Blues Festival a few times, and have quite a large collection of great blues musicians, past and present.
