Sometimes my favorite shows are the ones where the completely unexpected transpires. Lauson (that's my fabulous daughter, as if you didn't know) asked me to drive her to pick up some clothes from a friend of hers, and then drop her at BART. It didn't take much to talk her into joining me in the studio for me show.

And that was only the beginning of the fun! 

Soon enough Daniel, from the Mab was in. And then here came Ignacio and Jasper. Then David Fraser, who hosts Escape Velocity on Mondays, noon-2pm, came by to talk about a new show idea. And with all this I had to train a returning RV DJ, Bunnywhiskers, who now goes by the name Fly Faced Necronomicones, and is hosting Wednesdays noon - 2pm

It got a bit busy in the studio Monday night.

But this didn't keep me from bringing you the music you depend on week by week.

Just look at these tunes! I mean really now, where else are you going to get a mess like this? I ask you, WHERE!?!?!

There's a lot of great goings-on at Radio Valencia these days. Some great shows, with incredible hosts, showing what they've got two hours at a time. That's not nearly enough time to showcase all of what we've got, but there ya go.

This is going to be one helluva party, including a huge sale and FREE live music from both bands starting at 6pm, on Saturday, June 13th.

There are reasons to feel despair, and there are reasons to celebrate. I think we can do both at the same time. Two things can be right at the same time. Time waits for no one, and it won't wait for Hell. Hell is for other people's children. Children are the future. There is no future. There is only now. 

Can you tell I'm tired?

I just finished helping Little Lauson Hell (AKA: Spawn) do her taxes. What a kick in the ass that was. 

I'm pretty brain dead. Deadhead. Head on a poll. Poll taxes. TAXES?!?!??!

That was terrible.

And you and I both know what they're using our taxes for! And since the IRS basically doesn't exist at all anymore, what's going to happen if we all just don't file?

I'm so tired I couldn't remember a better word for "don't" in the previous sentence. I'm misspelling words all over the damn place! You wouldn't know that though since I have a lot of white out.

And I'm distracted with Lauson and our kitty Chairman Meow Mao (AKA Maui) chilling out next to me. Lauson loves our kitty. 

Sorry. I was gone for a moment, We both had to take a kitty break. If you know, you know.

True story.

I think I was going to write something about music since I did host my show on Monday night. I bought a few records over the weekend and I share a lot of it tonight! Orcutt, Shelley, Miller; The Exploited, Sprints, Primitive Ring, and The Bobby Lees!!!!!!!

I kinda blew my load with all this great new music. Too bad, so sad.

So tired. I really need to call it a night and not regret my decisions.

Spooky times are heating up at Radio Valencia. This is a good thing.

We had a really great fundraiser last Sunday. Huge thanks to GRHNS Gallery and Bernadette for hosting us. And thanks to the three great bands: Janky Band, Rustangs, and Fantasy for rockin' out hard for everyone. We couldn't have pulled this off without the incredible skill of San Francisco sound man extraordinaire John Karr and his assistant Ethan. And thanks to Sully and 21st Amendment Brewery for throwing us some suds to serve. And thanks to everyone who came out and those who donated online.

All in all it was a really fine day.

As for this show it's mighty extraordinary in its own right. I pulled out some spooky tracks and my trainee, Annika, has a bunch of 50s and 60s-era treats to share. Annika is going to be hosting her own show Fridays 6-8pm. Tune in. She has excellent taste in music, that fits in mighty well at Radio Valencia.

I also paid tribute to Ace Frehley of KISS, who passed away last week. KISS was my first favorite band. I tell the story in the show. Check it out!

I went to Mosswood Meltdown last Saturday, and it was as good as I expected it to be. Niis, Prison Affair,

OSees and DEVO were the real standouts. The sun cleared for a while and I found myself relaxing under the shade of a tree in the vendors area. I bought myself some 45s (my motorcycle bags aren't large enough to hold LPs. I probably saved some money there).

I eventually found myself directly in front of the soundboard hanging out with a few friends, including our Radio Valencia staff photographer Sean Haley, who brought a bunch of die-cut Radio Valencia stickers for us to pass out. Thanks Sean! 

I've seen the OSees many times, and never tire of them. What a brilliant set they brought. This was my first time seeing DEVO, and WOW is all I can say. There's actually a lot more I can say. I can talk about how both Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale are still on top of their game after 50+ years. I can talk about the stellar video graphics projected
throughout the show. I can talk about the setlist that we all sang along with. It was that good.

I can also talk about showing up on Sunday just to find out that I never did purchase a ticket for that day. D'oh! I went home and streamed the day. Shannon and the Clams put on a brilliant set as they always do. 

Early bird tickets for Mosswood Meltdown 2026 are now on sale. And they are going fast!!! I got mine!

Tune into my Tuesday night Live Bootleg Bonanza and I'm sure you'll be hearing some of the sets from this year.

For tonight's show I played a bunch of the 45s I bought at the Meltdown. It's safe to say this is a very punk-forward program. But it's not exclusive. See the setlist below for details.

And then in the middle of the show I come to find out that Jonathan Richman was performing next door at the Make Out Room!!!!! What the what!!!! So I did what any self respecting DJ would do: I found some never before released bootleg demos of Modern Lovers and I played a track as the show was exiting. I really should have grabbed Jonathan for an interview; the fan boy that I am. Alas, he slipped away before I had a chance to even steal a photo of him.

He was there in support of singer-songwriter Jesse DeNatale and the Dreamers, who are playing every Monday night in July. Go see this show!

I'm heading to the Rock and Roll Flea Market on Alameda at Faction Brewing this Saturday afternoon,
followed by the US Finals Air Guitar Championship at The Independent Saturday night. I'll see you at both.

Well, January arrived, so I figure I better pull out what I bought last year and give all a spin. 

King Gizzard released its 26th album in 2024. And what an amazing show they put on at The Frost. Dale Crover came back from neck surgery to record and tour with Redd Kross, put out his third solo album and 27th with the Melvins. I can't wait to see them in April and again coming up in June. I love me some Melvins!

Nick Cave seems to be emerging from his deep grief-stricken period with Wild God. I'll be seeing him in May. Great albums from Billy Strings, WAND, Ty Segall, OSEES, GOAT (so many bands using allcaps?!?!?!), Shannon and the Clams, and more!

Monday night I'll be back with new music and music that's new to you.

Tune into the station you have come to rely on to play the best of whatever genre you're into.

Hot damn, it was cold in the Radio Valencia studio on Monday night. It took a real hot set of music to turn up the heat. I often walk the line of telling it like it is and just getting the heck off the mic so you can enjoy the music. I even have a music bed, performed by the magnificent singer/songwriter Adam MacKintosh, that keeps me honest at about three minutes in length. There's a method to my madness. I need more than three minutes to tell it like it is. 

Each week I go through my record collection searching for whatever is tickling my fancy this week. I'm also listening to a lot of radio (Radio Valencia, KFJC, KALX, KEXP, WFMU, and others as I commute daily). There are so many great DJs turning me on to new music. 

If you're thinking of what to get your loved ones for a gift, I strongly encourage music. No albums in the house? Buy a turntable! Only listening via an app? Get the Bandcamp app and support the artists directly. But let's all agree that cassettes were wrong the first time around (other than mix tapes) and should never make a comeback. This coming from the guy who worked the cassette room at Tower Records, and owned thousands of bootleg tapes. There is nothing redeemable about cassettes. Though there is something to be said about buying an off-brand best of southern rock cassette while on a road trip. 

I do have a few boxes of my airchecks from my many years at KFJC. Those have to be incredibly embarrassing to listen to. There was a show I hosted in 1991 (one of my early graveyard shifts when I was the Reverend Dah Wave), when I was taking call in confessions (I didn't know it was a priest that took confessions, so there ya go). We didn't have a delay at KFJC, so I took a real risk that the callers weren't going to swear. Luckily no one did. And many of the callers were my friends, up late and very imbibed. The great Oz, the Watermonk of Dah (aka Noa Oz Appleton) was in the studio with me. We took a few very hilarious calls. 

Unbeknownst to me, my program director was listening in too. I got a stern talking to (understatement of 1991) and was lucky to keep my shift. I listened back to that aircheck a few years later. It was so cringey that I took the tape out of my car stereo and threw it in the back seat. I wonder where that thing is??? Do I dare listen back? Should I digitize it? Should I share it on Radio Valencia?!?!?!??!

As for this show, I'm as cringey as ever, but I own that now.

All vinyl. Nothing new. Many genres. All worth your time.

I'll be hosting an alternative XMas show on Monday, December 23rd. Tune in and enjoy the hot cocoa on me. Maybe that'll heat up the studio this time around.

What team are you on: play only the most subversive sounds that may draw in listeners hungry for something new and challenging, but may push some away? Or are you in the camp of play a lot more accessible sounds so as not to push too many listeners away?

I struggle with this, week-to-week, as I'm putting my shows together. I really want to turn you on to music you've never heard, that is knocking me out, but I also know that if I play too much subversive sounds, I may only end up with my mother listening. She really digs that Throbbing Gristle (HA!).

Really though, if you had your choice, which kind of radio show are you more likely to stick around for and tune into each week.

I aim to please, which still pushing your comfort zone.

That was not meant as a euphemism, but you know...

Have you been enjoying the Olympics as much as I have? 

I am curious though about some of the track and field events. Who wakes up in the morning and decides they are going to put themselves on the world map by throwing the shotput? I'm just curious. In my younger concert-going days (I still go to a lot of live shows) there were moments when the music moved me to jump quite a bit. More pogoing than anything. I could catch quite a bit of air. Maybe I missed my calling?

Either way, the Olympics has been brilliant and a real highlight of my summer break. 

Doing a radio show at a free form station is like a participating in some kind of competitive sport. There's always this need to one up another DJ when it comes to obscure artists. 

I went to the "Art of Noise" exhibit at the SF MOMA a week ago with three KFJC alumni: Dominic Trix, Mark Dharms, and Claud Maul. It is an incredible show, and I encourage you all to go if you live in the Bay Area. At lunch, before we went to the museum, much of the talk was about music, of course. And it was hilarious the obscure artists we brought up. Such is the life in competitive DJing.

As for this show you are about to enjoy (I enjoyed bringing it to you), there are a few spotlights in there. I start off with a tribute to MCA from the Beastie Boys, follow it up with a John Mayal tribute, and then I focus on King Buzzo and Trevor Dunn who I saw at the Chapel last Tuesday night, by playing Buzzo and Dunn-related tunes. 

There is a method to my madness after all.

June was Black Music Month. I took Monday night to play a number of Black Power music. Honestly, I could host a weekly show of this and not nearly scratch the surface.

Some of this you'll recognize, but I bet dollars to donuts (mmmm donuts) you haven't heard it all.

I shared some Soul, Funk, R&B, Hiphop, Reggae, Dub and Jazz. I then pivoted to some brand spankin' new Redd Kross, that may be my favorite record of theirs! No kidding! Also, some new Shannon and the Clams and recent Iggy Pop. I close out the show with a little tribute to Kinky Friedman, who passed away last week.

Once again, i'm back in the studio every Monday after hosting live in the studio every other Monday for the past year. It's so much fun doing this show every week. I really feel that I can get into a better groove for you. Pun intended!

Enjoy this holiday this week, regardless of what the Supreme Court ruled this week. In the words of the brilliant Apu Nahasapeemapetilon celebrate the birth of the country by blowing up a small part of it.

Mondays are fun days...for me. I was realizing I have been hosting a radio show Mondays 8pm since 2000, when I started at San Francisco Liberation Radio. SFLR's history is a rich one and I encourage you to check it out. In short, it was started by Food Not Bombs. They were upset that their arrests for feeding the homeless weren't getting enough media attention, so member Richard Edmondson started the station in his van. Eventually it ended up in his apartment in the Richmond District.

I was working at Trader Joe's in Daly City when I saw a shopper wearing a SFLR t-shirt. I had to inquire. They hipped me to the station, I made a call, and started there a few weeks later.

The rest, as they say, is history. And what a history it is, including the raid by the FCC using SFPD. We were a very politicized staff. And we were a pirate radio station, so it was only a matter of time before the Man came knocking. Or more like battering ramming, which they did.

We fought the good fight, and even set some precedent in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Because of our fight urban areas are allowed to file for low power FM (LPFM) licenses. Before our case against the feds, the FCC policy only allowed rural areas to file for a LPFM. Yay SFLR!

I left there after the raid, ended up at Pirate Cat, then FCCFree, and eventually built Radio Valencia, all hosting the Monday 8pm slot. Time flies.

As for this show, it's more of what you have come to expect: diverse, and leaning punk. But there's quite a bit more than that, including a couple sets from a new member of our staff: The Archivist, who will be on Sundays 8-10pm Pacific. Coincidentally, he used to be a student of mine many moons ago. He has excellent musical taste, which has nothing to do with me. 

There's a tribute to Wayne Kramer, who passed away last week, and a happy birthday to Bob Marley. 

Oh, one final comment about Mondays: the Giants have a winning record on Monday nights. True story.

Who's going to play me in the movie of your life? I vote for Richard Hell (no relation). 

I've been rereading "Please Kill Me, by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain, the oral history of Punk. Read and reread this book. Much of the music tonight has been influenced by the reading. 

Throughout the show I just kept getting inspired to push the limits. Just listen to the Last Poets track and you'll understand. 

I wasn't in the studio for Halloween this year (taking Bodhi out. POSTSCRIPT: Bodhi ended up sick with a bad cold for Halloween so we stayed in. Poor kid; he was so sad. Me too), so I got the spirit flowing through me the week before. I'll let the play list speak for itself.

There are a few treats throughout the program, including Sonic Youth covering The Fall for John Peel (The Fall was Peel's favorite band), some rare JBs featuring Phelps and Bootsy Collins, an incredibly rare Pink Floyd acetate from 1967, very early Kraftwerk, some Led Zeppelin from their second album, mastered in a way you have never heard it before, and a recent mix of David Bowie's "Life of Mars" and The Clash's "Know Your Rights".

November is coming up, which means it's almost time for my 12th annual Annual Annual, where I choose one year that had a lot to say musically (don't they all?), and play two hours of my favorite. Which year will I choose? What songs will I play? Tune in and find out later in November.

I'm not taking sides as much as talking about the ballot props and who is running for which office in California, as well as what the mid-terms mean for Biden and Congress.
