Well, you know, it's always a protest, even in the best of times. Use it, or lose, amiright?

Having a radio show on a Monday means I get to host a lot of national holidays. This isn't my first go-round on President's Day, but it sure feels like an extra special one, if you ask me. And it being Black History Month I felt that I could do a pretty good mash-up to boot.

Folks, it's official, we have a fascist for president. You can't say we don't. Even when people were claiming Shrub (George W. You, know: little Bush) was one, I was always quick to point out that he didn't fit the definition well enough, but if we aren't careful he'll set the stage for some else to come in who truly is one. Well, what do ya know? 

You disagree? That's fine. Tell me all about it in the comment section. I've been teaching history, civics and law for over 20 years now. When you have seen and taught what I have, the boxes get checked.

So luckily I have this here radio show that I can use, until they pry away from my cold, dead hands, to play you the music and share the commentary that you just aren't getting on other radio stations. Even the non-comms like KEXP, KFJC, WFMU, aren't talking openly about the politics of the day. And though Radio Valencia does not endorse a specific political point of view, we allow our DJs to share how they're feeling about the issues of the day. Just offer the disclaimer in there somewhere.

As for the music, it's a fabulous grab bag of funky, punky, junky and political delights.

And thank you all once again for contributing to our first ever "on air" fundraiser. We raised just short of $3000, all of which will go right into operations including a new and improved website coming soonish.

Starting out Black History Month with a BANG! Sweet sounds of funk and soul punctuate more than the first half of the show, and I know I'm going to have to keep this going all month. And why wouldn't I?

Growing up I was always put off that Black History Month was during the shortest month of the year. I thought it was an insult to African-Americans! Being a history teacher I learned this started out as Black History Week by Carter G. Woodson in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. It is in February to commemorate the birthday of Abraham Lincoln.

I've got some classic soul and funk peppered throughout the sets. 

The second half of the show features some library adds (meaning not new, but new to me), including the first Shannon and the Clams release, French Punk/New Wave Plastic Bertand, early Barbara Manning World of Pooh and more.

It's always a pleasure bringing music to you, week after week. I truly live for this. Your contributions help keep Radio Valencia rolling. We are wrapping up our very first "on air" fundraiser, which has brought in $2000+. This is a really great start, and we will use each dollar to pay for upkeep of the equipment, purchase new tech, pay for streaming and website needs, and any emergencies that pop up (and they always pop up).

Happy birthday to MEEEEEEEE!

It's my birthday, and here I am alone in the studio giving back to YOUUUUUUUUU. And why not? It's a real treat being able to do this every week. Two hours is never enough, and I never come with a plan. I start with a song and go from there. I let the music move me, and since I wasn't focusing on playing anything new tonight, I was digging into my vault to pull out some tunes that have moved me over the years.

Since there isn't a holiday for Hell Day...yet, I figured I should pay tribute to all the great laborers out there who never get the appreciation they deserve. 

I've hosted a lot of Labor Day shows over the years, and I think it's my favorite holiday to celebrate. I've been a union member for most of my working career, being a teacher, and before that in the grocery industry. At the age of 21, I was a shop steward at a grocery store I worked at. I was a member of the Union Building Committee at the school I teach at for nine years, meeting weekly with the administration, keeping them true to the contract. 

I have never had a hard time speaking truth to power. If I have learned anything it's how to finesse how I articulate the message that's needed to be said; all of which in support of the workers. 

I will never cross a picket line. 

The music tonight is all in celebration of the workers, most of whom are paid far below their value. 

I shared a lot of worker history during the show as well. I'm guessing you aren't aware of a lot of the what I spoke about.

Don't like the way you're treated at work, then join a union. 

Below I share the song "Rich Men Earning North of a Million, by Billy Bragg, which was a song he wrote in response to the song "Rich Men North of Richmond, by Oliver Anthony. I encourage you to listen to both (Anthony's first), to understand why Bragg felt the need to write his version.

June was Black Music Month. I took Monday night to play a number of Black Power music. Honestly, I could host a weekly show of this and not nearly scratch the surface.

Some of this you'll recognize, but I bet dollars to donuts (mmmm donuts) you haven't heard it all.

I shared some Soul, Funk, R&B, Hiphop, Reggae, Dub and Jazz. I then pivoted to some brand spankin' new Redd Kross, that may be my favorite record of theirs! No kidding! Also, some new Shannon and the Clams and recent Iggy Pop. I close out the show with a little tribute to Kinky Friedman, who passed away last week.

Once again, i'm back in the studio every Monday after hosting live in the studio every other Monday for the past year. It's so much fun doing this show every week. I really feel that I can get into a better groove for you. Pun intended!

Who's going to play me in the movie of your life? I vote for Richard Hell (no relation). 

I've been rereading "Please Kill Me, by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain, the oral history of Punk. Read and reread this book. Much of the music tonight has been influenced by the reading. 

Throughout the show I just kept getting inspired to push the limits. Just listen to the Last Poets track and you'll understand. 

I wasn't in the studio for Halloween this year (taking Bodhi out. POSTSCRIPT: Bodhi ended up sick with a bad cold for Halloween so we stayed in. Poor kid; he was so sad. Me too), so I got the spirit flowing through me the week before. I'll let the play list speak for itself.

There are a few treats throughout the program, including Sonic Youth covering The Fall for John Peel (The Fall was Peel's favorite band), some rare JBs featuring Phelps and Bootsy Collins, an incredibly rare Pink Floyd acetate from 1967, very early Kraftwerk, some Led Zeppelin from their second album, mastered in a way you have never heard it before, and a recent mix of David Bowie's "Life of Mars" and The Clash's "Know Your Rights".

November is coming up, which means it's almost time for my 12th annual Annual Annual, where I choose one year that had a lot to say musically (don't they all?), and play two hours of my favorite. Which year will I choose? What songs will I play? Tune in and find out later in November.

Having a chance to play these tunes for you brings great joy to Hell. There's a lot of blues in the first hour, and the blues always lifts me up! Give your ears a chance to get used to something new. I read another article recently that spoke about how people get set in their musical ways by the age of 32, and most of that music is what they were listening to in high school and immediately after. 

I'm about to turn 52, and ten of the tunes I played tonight were new to me over the past six months or so. I mean seriously now. I get that we're busy. I understand that for many music just runs in the background (I actually don't understand this at all, but I know not everyone can be as obsessed with music as I am), and I get that life keeps on keepin' on. I guess that's why I will always be a strong proponent for the power and magic of non-commercial radio.

It's DJs, who have the power to program their own shows, that give you a chance to sit back and enjoy the aural ride. Let us do the driving, so to speak. That's ok. I don't mind that. As a matter of fact I get really excited about that. Just listen to my mic breaks! 

A few notes about this show: Tom Waits is celebrating the 20th anniversary of both "Blood Money" and "Alice", so you get a taste of that. Some new music from Spain's Podium, new sounds from Ty Segall and Fantastic Negrito, as well as a premier from local guitarist/producer/engineer Myles Boisen, who will be on my show in two weeks, on Monday, August 22nd. Tune in.

If you listen to Hell's Kitchen Radio, Monday's 8-10pm Pacific, then you know that when it comes to music, Black history emanates from each of my shows. I know it's Black History Month, but popular music wouldn't exist if it weren't for the talents of amazing Black artists, too many to list here.

Tonight I want to showcase three amazing artists who have made an indelible mark on my soul: Tina Turner, Curtis Mayfield, and Aretha Franklin. Each have made huge contributions to music, fashion and culture in our second half of the 20th century, and into today.

The first show I'm going to share are actually made up from two Soul Train appearances of Ike and Tina Turner. Dayyyyyyyyyum, they can get down. The first is from my second birthday, September 30, 1972, and the second is a few year later, when they were the biggest act on tour, January 19, 1975.

Following Ike and Tina, I have a composite of some of the best live performances from the late, great Curtis Mayfield. Enjoy these thirteen tracks from various live shows and some studio outtakes between 1972-1974.

The final show I have for you this evening features the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin, live at Montreux, Switzerland, June 12, 1971. There is a reason she is called the Queen of Soul. Tune in to find out.

OK, so someone posted this fabulous YouTube clip recently of every sample used in Paul's Boutique (though I think a few are missing), and I of course just had to track down each and every sample, 99 in all. I already had about 60 of the tracks, but the hunt for the remainder has been fun, nevertheless. And you, my dear listener, are the one's to benefit from this scavenger hunt. This is why you tune in, right? Right.

Anyway, I start the second hour with eight tracks used to sample "Egg Man" and then follow it up with said Beastie Boys track. I'll be doing this for each of the tracks on this classic LP in the weeks to come. Tune in and enjoy.

I also took this holiday show to share some longer and stranger tracks as you can see from the playlist below. I picked up a couple of James Brown/JBs LPs this past week, as well as some 80s and 90s punk 7"s . I also close out the show with a few live cuts that I think are worthy for your ears. Sometimes inspiration arrives in the strangest of moments. I was actually about three minutes late for my show tonight. Thanks to Dial-A-Shot for keeping it rockin' until I arrived. I quickly threw my first tune on, "Porno" by local SF funk-punksters Limbomaniacs (if you saw them back in the 90s then you know), and as I was contemplating my own porn addiction (tongue in cheek, folks, seriously), I thought about what other addictions people are known to enjoy. Hence tonight's theme: substance use!

Oh the joys of the holidays, when we look for any coping mechanism within reach. So whether it's tasty treat that is alcohol, aromatic marijuana, a psychedelic journey, cocaine blues, or maybe you're into the needle, this is the show for you.

After so many shows where it feels like I'm paying tribute to some lost musical genius, I needed to cleanse my Hellish soul. This show is sure to get your toes tappin'. On the menu are some classics and some tracks that are soon to be classic in your collection.
