Sometimes the week just gets away from me. I really need to be more on top of this blog. For this I apologize. And look what you missed!!! Scarrrrrry soundzzzzzzz. Not really. Kinda. I really didn't put much effort into the holiday theme, most likely because it's a week away, and I'm really trying to avoid making a costume of any kind. What the hell is wrong with me? I used to love to do the whole DIY thing. I did make my toddler son's costume. Bodhi wants to be a blueberry. There are no blueberry costumes out there to be purchased, so I did what any modern day, creative father would do: I hit up the craft store!

He wants me to be a strawberry. This is not going to happen. He wants his mother to be a banana. This too is not going to happen. He wants his sister, Little Lauson Hell, to be an elephant. This really isn't going to happen. He'll forget all about it once he gets a candy bar thrown his way.

I am totally off topic.

This show was fun nonetheless. I realized following the show I should have played the Tom Waits tune "What's He Building In There?", instead of what I did play. In retrospect I have creepy music galore that I didn't play. I did pull out some horror film soundtracks, and a few treats. There is some new music from the Melvins and Kate Vargas. I also picked up the 50th anniversary Beatles "Let It Be" box set. I played a few selections from those sessions in the second hour.

I just picked up the entire Pink Floyd 2021 remastered collection. There are no extras, but it sounds amazing! Next Monday you may hear some of this.

If you're heading out on the town Sunday for Halloween, save some to the treats for the kids, will ya? My wife and I had this idea years ago, to serve creamed corn from ladles into the candy bags. Hilarious. Maybe one day? HA!

Tune in for the music, stay for my stinging commentary on commercial radio! Seriously though, you can't write this stuff. Live 105 is now Dave FM? Too much. Let's turn commercial radio into a ghost town. To me this looks like the death knell of the medium. What a perfect time for people to tune into non-commercial, and community radio like Radio Valencia, where the DJs all curate their own shows. There is nothing holding us back. We aren't relying on corporate interests. Our motive is our purpose.

As always, a lot of new music on this show. including new acoustic Melvins, new King Gizzard, FUZZ, Shannon and the Clams. I'm also starting a second hour feature where I showcase my box set collections. There are always sonic treats in these sets that you've never heard before. I'll be sharing what I've got weekly.

Enjoy.

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza - Monday 6-8PM Pacific - Johnny Cash (1976) & New Riders of the Purple Sage (1970)

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza

Monday's 6-8PM Pacific

http://radiovalencia.fm

You can do no wrong with Johnny Cash. He's cool as cool can get, and I think there was a time that he knew it and he liked it. Then I think he grew to a point that he knew it and couldn't care less. That in itself is universally cool. This performance shows him at a point in his life where he is standing on top of the world.

By 1976 Cash was able to afford to take his entire family on tour with him and get them all on the stage. Considering he married into the famous Carter family, it was the least he could do. This show features a few duets with his magnificent bride, June Carter Cash, as well other members of the Carter clan in tow. The quips between songs are enough to get any semi-Cash fan onto the bus.

October 2, 1976 - Jamboree USA, Capitol Music Hall - Wheeling, West Virginia
Lineage: Soundboard->Reel Tapes->1-track CD-R's-> WAV -> track split (WavePad) -> FLAC level 8

Jerry Garcia learned how to play the pedal steel guitar in 1969, so he needed a band that he could showcase this talent. Enter the New Riders of the Purple Sage, featuring three buddies of Jerry's: David Nelson, John "Marmaduke" Dawson, and Dave Torbert. Mickey Hart and Phil Lesh were in the first incarnation of this band. Former Jefferson Airplane/Starship drummer Spencer Dryden taken over on the skins after Hart left.

This band preceded bands like Poco, The Eagle, The Doobie Brothers, and we a hell of a lot more loose and fun. This is barroom drinking in Bakersfield country. This is taking your lady (or fella) out on a Saturday night to drink and dance. And you get to hear Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar!

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza - Monday 6-8PM Pacific - Jonathan Richman (1984) & P.E.R.R.O. (1970-1971)

I'm mighty lucky. I really am. I have this creative outlet I get to play with every week for the past 11 years. And there's just so damn much great music to share! There are times I have sleepless nights considering what I want to play for you. Not really. But I do care.

Let me show you how much I care over the next two hours with these two performances.

First up is a remarkable young man from the Boston, Mass area. He's the geeky love-sick master punk songwriter, Jonathan Richman. And I don't really think plunging him and the Modern Lovers into the Punk genre is very fair. He's steeped in 50s pop, 60s doo-wop, along with the proto-rock-a-billy here and there. Heck, I'd let him sing to my toddler ("I'm a little dinosaur"). This kid's good. I've got a tasty show from July 1, 1984, live in Helsinki, Finland!!! This is a great show. The banter between songs is so much fun. You can tell JR is a fun cat to hang around.

LINEAGE: FM - Cassette (unknown gen.) - Audacity

Next up is something truly from deep in the vault, and a collection that many audiophiles, such as myself, have been praying would be released officially someday in complete form. Until then, you'll just have to enjoy this treat.

Between 1970 and 1971 at Wally Heider's studio in San Francisco, it was a who's-who of Bay Area music

royalty. During this particular time David Crosby (The Byrds, CSN) had moved up to the Bay Area to be closer to this music, and practically moved into Wally Heider's to record his first solo album "If I Could Only Remember My Name". Many local musical dignitaries ended up on that album, who were collectively known as Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra, or P.E.R.R.O.

P.E.R.R.O. consisted of, but were not limited to the following: David Crosby~Jerry Garcia~Phil Lesh~Paul Kantner~Jorma Kaukonen~Jack Casady~Mickey Hart~Billy Kreutzmann~Grace Slick~David Freiberg~Graham Nash~others

There are hundred of hours of tapes from these sessions recorded by the amazing producer/engineer Steven Bancard. For more information on these sessions I urge you to check out the amazing Grateful Dead podcast, Deadcast, which features many great interviews with living PERRO members, including David Crosby. One particular episode right here is worth your time.
