It took eight years, but my son Bodhi finally popped his radio cherry. Ew, that didn't sound right. That being said, he was really excited to come into the Radio Valencia studios Monday night to play his favorite K-Pop tunes for you all. 

I was thinking back to Lauson's first show when she played songs I wouldn't normally play for you all. Who cares?!?!? The joy of having this little guy in the studio outstripped any esoteric, dissonant tune I could have made you sit through. Then again, I think you know what I think about pop music.

I wasn't about to yuck his yum.

Bodhi and I listen to a lot of music and home, so he's already used to dad's taste. I encouraged him to play the songs that he likes, so you get a few tracks from the K-Pop Demon Hunters soundtrack. He loves the idea of this movie, but it's still a little scary fo him to
sit through. You have no idea how thrilled I am that he's not desensitized to scary films yet. He'll hide behind the couch sometimes. Considering what I accidentally did to Lauson when she was 5 or 6, I couldn't be happier that Bodhi will still cover his eyes.

It's all about the music for this little guy. He also pulled out a track from the Minecraft movie. 

Mom (Sgt. Sauce) was also in the studio, showing full support for our offspring. It's been many moons since she stepped behind the mic, and as always brought some great music along. 

I've marked their selections with "B" and "SS". 

I do what I do throughout, including interviewing our shrewd eight year old on all things of interest.

I really enjoy interviewing people. Maybe that's why I love running a radio station, it allows me to talk to interesting people. It inspires me to hear about the incredible and creative work that people are doing. Honestly, we have no excuses not to get up and make stuff happen.

Tonight I had the pleasure to interview KBLT founder and documentarian Sue Carpenter, and walk down memory lane talking about the legendary LA-based pirate radio station she started until the FCC came knocking and took all her equipment away (I know all too well about this from my days at San Francisco Liberation Radio).

I had to do my best not to shout out "ME TOO" with her stories about the challenges of starting and running a pirate radio station.

After running a radio station out of her apartment, Sue Carpenter became a full-time journalist, working at the L.A. Times, Spectrum News and KPCC. People who appear in the film include Sue, Brandon Jay (Lutefisk), Jay Babcock (Arthur Magazine), artist Camille Rose Garcia, filmmaker Wing Ko, music industry vets Chris Carey and Miwa Okumura, KBLT engineer Chris Wagganer, writer Carolyn Kellogg and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine.

Did Keith Morris (Circle Jerks) really bring his friends, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, to play at KBLT? Yes, that happened.

Sue's journey is well worth your time checking out. She wrote a book about it in 2004, and now she has a documentary she produced and is taking on the film fest rounds, including this Saturday night at the Roxie Theater, which is being co-presented by Radio Valencia

It would appear I went a bit long and neglected my responsibility of posting my show. Sorry about that folks. I had a new Radio Valencia DJ in the studio for the night, training for his new show. You can check out The Final Step with Izzy Tuesdays 10-midnight. Nice guy. I'm looking forward to his show.

We have a lot of really great shows on Radio Valencia. And I'm nit just saying that. When I started this station I had a vision of a freeform station that allowed DJs to not only share the music they love, but to also continue to explore music of many genres, ready and excited to play what they find on their show, just for you.

That's what still excites me about hosting a radio show after all these years. 

So, even though I was distracted training our new host, I made certain to have some great music ready for you over two hours. New music from the Murlocks, Melvins with Helms Alee covering some early Scorpions, new Meatbodies, Population II from Montreal, Slift, Kim Gordon, and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets whom I'm seeing in San Francisco next week!

There's also some rare San Francisco punk with pre-Flipper band Negative Trend, as well as some SF funk/punk with Dread Zeppelin, and many other treats sprinkled about.

You know I start this show out talking about why I do what I do. This is all about taking two hours and paining an aural picture for your mind. Spotify can't do that. Commercial radio stations won't do that. They can't risk losing their sponsors. Spotify has no soul. Commercial radio exists to steal your soul and your time. And how insulting are they? 

Want to play "What's on the Bone"? I bet you guessed right. I don't want you to ever be able to guess what I'm going to play on my show. Yes, there are a handful of artists who I have been known to play more often than others. Just scroll to the bottom of this page and you can see for yourself. But I mean, c'mon, look at who those artists are? Melvins over 100 times! The top ten don't get so much airplay anywhere else. OK, maybe the Grateful Dead? 

I was all over the place on this show. Experimental, garage-punk, Americana, Bluegrass, free-Jazz, Soul-Jazz, both American and British Punk, a tribute to Jeff Beck, British Rock, Greek Psych-Groove, Neo-Psych and Gospel. What in the world is going to take for you to get it through that thick skull of yours that you are worth so much more than you give yourself credit for, Why do you keep listening to that dreck on the commercial radio knowing as you do that they only deliver content to the lowest common denominator? You are more special than this. They do not deserve your ears!

Radio Valencia on the other had prides itself on pushing the limit of acceptable audio. Yeah, yeah, we'll play tunes you'll recognize from time to time, from artists you love. But we're also going to play you artists that you're going to really fall in love with, leaving all others in the dust. 

And isn't that why you tune in to radio? I mean really. You're not the same person you were in high school, so why should your musical choice be the same?

My mission in my radio life is to never insult you. Please let me know if you feel that I've done so. If so, you can fuck right off. HA! Just joking. I really love turning you on...to music. What were you thinking? Whatever it was, I like it. I really do. 

I wax poetic about all the evil of commercial radio all the damn time, but it appears that my vitriol has hit new heights! I' just sickened by what I hear on the FM when I'm driving along. I admit, I'm a button pusher, but I may scald my fingertip by how quickly I'm hitting that button. Once you move past 94.1FM (in the Bay Area) there just isn't anything interesting on the dial.

How sad is that?

Of course, I will continue to sing the praises of all things noncommercial. And why not? Music should always be purpose driven. I never mind playing older artists for you, but when I do, I like it to be something you would not normally hear on any other station. You be the judge.

I also really appreciate your feedback. I can only improve when my listeners chime in. Don't be shy. 

Lots of tasty treats in this episode. I went record shopping recently (SURPRISE!), and picked up a few Arhoolie Records releases. Check out the Big Mama Thornton track featuring the Muddy Waters Blues Band live in San Francisco in 1966. There's also the ridiculous piano playing of Dave Alexander. This guy is off the charts, good. Other than the Blues, there's 90s indie, 20's Psych, funk, punk, junk, hiphop, folk, and more more more!

It's December so it's time for my obligatory BEST of show...kinda. If anything it's a chance to play great music! And isn't that why you tune in week after week? You do tune in, don't you? That's interesting. I just realized that I asked "don't you", and not "do not you". Huh.

My show isn't all about 2018 music, however. Just take a gander at the playlist below and you'll note the diversity in the sets. Yes folks, we here at Radio Valencia believe the only good radio is diverse radio. Why I play all kinds of diverse genres: metal, heavy metal, death metal, speed metal, stoner metal, and doom metal. Don't be fooled by our competitors, they only program to the lowest common denominator. We have discovered a way to much much lower.

That being said, there was a lot of great music in 2018. Albums by King Tuff, Oh Sees, Mudhoney, Sleep, and of course a few by Ty Segall, are just a glimpse into what was another stellar year for the indie rock/garage scene.

I encourage you to tune in to Radio Valencia throughout the rest of 2018 for more Best of shows from some of the finest DJs west of East Orange, New Jersey.

I'm taking the next two weeks off to celebrate family and friends. I suggest you do the same. I'll be scheduling some of my favorite Hell's Kitchen Radio programs to play in my absence. A night of risk-taking on the ol' radio stream. Or is it Internet stream? Am I allowed to call this radio? We don't broadcast on the FM/AM. We have no antenna. There's no static coming across the line. Am I remiss if I say I have a "radio show"? Or do I have to be all literal and state that I host a two-hour Internet music program each Monday night? That's not very sexy.

Then again, neither am I.

How exactly did the week pass by without me posting my show? I hate when that happens. I don't just blindly pick music. I take my time to curate a show for you. I would love nothing more than to wax poetic about why I chose what I did for you on this fine night, but alas I cannot for the life of me recall anything beyond the fact it was Memorial Day, and I also picked up the new Sleep and Wooden Shjips LPs.

That'll have to do.

No guests tonight. No new releases tonight. No tribute tonight. No deaths or birthdays to report. No politics. No tickets to give away. Just you and me and the music. I rave a bit about something or another, but that's why you tune in, right? RIGHT!?!

The second hour still focuses on some recent live cuts I've recently found, but other than that it's another dive into the music library of HELL!

One thing you didn't witness during the show was the conflict I was having with the turntables. That was fun. for whatever reason I just could not get the turntable mixer to play through the main board. By the third set I had it all dialed in and the show really took off from there. I think it's those little issues that really keep me on my toes and have me pulling some righteous tunes out of my proverbial hat. I'd like to take this time to thank my 5th generation iPod from 2008 for all its help during that brief but anxious crisis. Together we made it through to the musical promised land.
