There are good times and then there are really good times.

Guess what this night was about?

Eric McFadden and Kate Vargas stopped in Monday night to talk all about their latest project: Sgt. Splendor!

I've been friends with Eric McFadden since the late, great Rotten Ron Donovan introduced us back in 2007. He's been on my show countless times. We've spent many a fine night at clubs and ice cream shops. And then there was New Orleans. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit.

That all being said, I was introduced to one Adam Mackintosh, singer/songwriter extraordinaire in New Orleans in 2017 for an extra special event, which you can read about here. It was at this event week that I met Adam. We were to be roommates for the few nights we were in town, and he met up with me at a club. It was your run of the mill extremely hot New Orleans night in May, when he walked in wearing a brown three piece suit, ascot and sunglasses, carrying a brown leather suitcase and brown Italian sunglasses, standing 6'5". We were introduced and the first thing I asked him was his thoughts about cockroaches? The place was hot. New Orleans in May, hot. 

Adam and I have been best friends ever since. 

Eric and Adam haven't seen one another in a few years, and Adam was in town visiting family, so I naturally had him come into the studio. I purposely didn't tell Eric about this, because I like a good reveal. Another great thing about this night was that Eric's partner-in-crime Kate Vargas was along for the ride. I was planning on interviewing them about their great act, Sgt. Splendor, who is on tour right now, and will be playing Bottle Rock in a few months.

You have just got to be listening when I'm talking on mic and there's a knock at the door. I ask Eric to open it. The rest is radio history.

All three of my guests were very vocal tonight about songwriting and performing. I really appreciate them coming down. Give it a listen and I think their enthusiasm will rub off on you.

I was told by a dear friend that I'm not a bad guy, I'm just not all that good either. HA! I love it! That's Hell for ya. I'm just pretty good at being pretty bad. And I enjoy laughing at that, and myself, often. I birthed John Hell in August 1994, when I co-founded Radio Free Burning Man. I'm sure I wrote about this somewhere else on this blog. We were all KFJC DJs and I didn't want to use my airname, Reverend Dah Wave, for the event in the desert. So I needed another moniker. 

I had seen the Rowdy Roddy Piper film "Hell Comes to Frogtown", a post-apocalyptic tale about a guy who survived the devastation and now needs to save all of these extremely hot women (of course), being held in captivity by the Frog King. I love Rowdy Roddy Piper. He was always my favorite wrestler. Pipers Pit was the best part of WWF on Saturday afternoons. And "They Live" will always be a classic. "I've come to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum". I mean, come on! Anyway, I thought Piper's name in "Hell Comes To Frogtown" was John Hell. And I thought "Hell YES!", what an excellent name for RFBM. Ends up his name was Frank Hell. That's super lame. No. So John Hell it was and it shall remain, even if Discovery Channel decided it was too adult for their precious little cable outlet and changed it to "Helle" for the four hour "Power Tool Drag Races" special. Whatever, I got paid. 

Initially I was thinking Hell would be all in your face; especially for Burning Man. I was purposely insulting to the organization, just to keep them honest. Now that John Hell about to turn 27(?!?!?!?!) he's much more reserved and sly. I like to poke fun in a more political manner, and to myself. Just what you've come to know and love. You do love me, don't you? (crickets)

As for this show, lot's of new music, Kate Vargas, the Scientists, Angel Bat Dawid, Gojira, Negativland, and Oh Sees. And everything else is gravy. 

Also, you get a treat, one of my oldest and greatest friends is about to start a brand new show Wednesday's 10-midnight (Pacific) on Radio Valencia. His moniker is The Alchemist. The show is a mouthful: Conflux Cornucopia Cerebellum Cocktail Hour! The Alchemist is a walking musical encyclopedia. I know you're going to dig his show. He took over a couple sets in the second hour of this show. I marked it so you know. You're welcome.

I never enjoy missing my show, and last week was going to two hours of some serious celebrating, but family first, last, and always. So there ya go. I saved it all up for this show...kinda. I mean, the polish has sort of worn off, since el douche bag (I won't even capitalize that) won't concede. What a little prince he is.

I admit, the slow burn is fun to watch, but not at the cost of our democracy, which this fool doesn't care a lick for. It's all about the ratings, and possibly because he knows that he's about to have a few indictments handed down within the next year. So long, Donnie. I would really love to see him taken out of the White House in handcuffs, but that's not going to happen, and it really shouldn't end that way for this guy. Not that he doesn't deserve it. It's just not good for the country. The world isn't exactly laughing at us right now as much as looking on with eyes wide and mouth agape. 

So I do what I always do when the adulting gets too much, I listen to music. And just take a gander of what I have in store for your next two hours. I want to thank my dear friend, singer/songwriter and all around fabulous human, Adam MacKinstosh for throwing a bunch of recommendations my way tonight. Some days I get so overwhelmed with my music library that it helps to have someone else's ears around to lend a hand. Thank you Adam. 

New music from FUZZ, Neil Young, and local power trio KnightressM1. There's also a celebration for the 45th anniversary release of Patti Smith's "Horses", and much much more to satisfy even the pickiest listener, including a 16 minute funky/acid-drenched Grateful Dead "Dancin' in the Streets", that's sure to get you shakin' your groove thang until the orange cheeto vacates 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

OK, so someone posted this fabulous YouTube clip recently of every sample used in Paul's Boutique (though I think a few are missing), and I of course just had to track down each and every sample, 99 in all. I already had about 60 of the tracks, but the hunt for the remainder has been fun, nevertheless. And you, my dear listener, are the one's to benefit from this scavenger hunt. This is why you tune in, right? Right.

Anyway, I start the second hour with eight tracks used to sample "Egg Man" and then follow it up with said Beastie Boys track. I'll be doing this for each of the tracks on this classic LP in the weeks to come. Tune in and enjoy.

I also took this holiday show to share some longer and stranger tracks as you can see from the playlist below. I picked up a couple of James Brown/JBs LPs this past week, as well as some 80s and 90s punk 7"s . I also close out the show with a few live cuts that I think are worthy for your ears. If you're playing the LDB game (and why would you?) then you better stop following the Abbey Lincoln track. Then again, the Lou Rawls version is my favorite LDB produced.

This apparently has become an annual event. If you listen to my show on a regular basis (of course you do!), then you often hear a cover tune or three. There are just too many quality versions to share with you. It's easy with a music collection like mine to play hours and hours of covers. The real test is to find two hours worth to make it worth your while to listen.

It's a total shock to have any idea where or when any of my shows may or may not be listened to, if at all! I say this, because it hit me a long while back that since you can download these shows, it's always possible, albeit a slim shot, that you are listening to this show in the far distant future on some media player, deep on the outskirts of a space system, having never even stepped foot on Earth. You've only heard passing mention of this long-dead orb. And what you've heard are meager little bits of nonesuch info that has honestly left you responding "meh". And who can really blame you?

I can!

This planet has had its ups and downs, but it's the only planet we have at this time. So you can float there all smug in the Aldebaran system with your flying everything, and ability to beam everything and anything anywhere at any time, but for me and my friends and family in July of 2017 we'll keep on fighting the good fight, making love, rocking out, and flying like an eagle, thank you very much.

Little Lauson Hell joined me on the air this past Monday, for what was her 9th visit to the Radio Valencia studios. Below I link to her previous shows. It's a trip watching her grow up on the radio. I remember how shy she was the first time she was with me. I think she was maybe 7 years old. I always say about that first episode "she was shy until she was no longer shy". Lauson didn't bring much music to the show on this night, but we spoke about her recently completing 7th grade, her fun-filled summer, and her goals for 8th grade. She's got wit, I'll give her that.

Once again I streamed video via FB Live. Thanks for all who tuned in. I honestly don't see what's so fascinating about watching a DJ cue up records, but knock yourself out. My buddy, and musical realization of a childhood dream I had all gone to pot, Adam Mackintosh tuned in and gave me permission to play his recent cover of the pat mAcdonald classic "Future's So Bright". If you recall the Timbuk 3 tune, then you really do need to listen to this latest version, which is about to make it onto a huge 100 song compilation at tribute to Pat. Brilliant!

Adam also introduced me to singer Liv Mueller last week via the Marco Polo app. Have you seen this app? What a voice she has! WOW! Deep, dark and sultry. You can find her release "Liv Sings Light of the Valley, Shadow of the Mountain" on iTunes.

I guess in my weird, subversive sort of way, much of the music on Monday night was somehow or another related to 'merica.

I think I play it a little too safe on my show from time to time. There are nights that I bring a lot of black metal, or speed metal, or, well, anything darker than I usually play for you, but I hold off thinking "they don't want to hear this stuff". I think I've been insulting you, and for that I am sorry. I just didn't want to ostracize my audience. I fell into the "lowest-common-denominator" style of programming. Damn, what is wrong with me?

To make up for my radio shortcomings I decided to get fairly dark tonight. There's some metal, punk and garage thrown in, as well as some pretty choice hard rock cuts. It's loud, it's fun, and from the feedback I received during the show, well-considered.

Radio is supposed to be about the art of the segue. I choose music that I believe will move you. That doesn't mean it will always be a pleasant movement. It does mean that I have thought hard about why I want to play this song, and hope that you will take the time to consume it. I'm painting a two hour audio picture just for you. Isn't that great?! Just another in the many reasons that I love Radio Valencia.

Next week I'll probably play two hours of Americana and Bakersfield Country. Also, I have tickets to see Dave and Phil Alvin to give away. Tune in!

This Thursday night at Folio Books on 24th Street in Noe Valley, I'm interviewing music critic and author Joel Selvin about his latest book "Altamont, The Rolling Stones, The Hells Angels, and the Inside Story of Rock's Darkest Day". It should make for a great hour. It starts at 7PM. Come on down and meet me and Joel, and get a copy of this great read. I flew through it. I thought I knew everything there was to know about Altamont. Well I do now.

I was out of town last week, so I have a lot to make up for. I think I did a fairly good job doing so. You be the judge. I have a good excuse though. I was down in the Big Easy, New Orleans, performing a marriage ceremony for Hell's Kitchen Radio friends Eric McFadden and his bride, Delphine De St Paër. And what a party it was! Five days and four nights during Jazz Fest in NOLA cannot be beat.

The wedding was on the fourth day, featuring what was probably the greatest wedding band ever assembled: Angelo Moore on vocals/theremin, Doug Wimbish on bass, RonKat Spearman on guitar, Wally Ingram on drums, CR Gruver on keys, with Corey Glover joining in on vocals, Lantz Lazwell on guitar. Leo Nocentelli of The Meters performed "Just Kissed My Baby" to the lovely couple, as well as James Hall singing the most beautiful song of his own, and the groom leading the backing band into a 25 minute Maggot Brain while the 66 members of the bridal party made their way down the aisle before the three ring bearers, four flower girls, three junior bridesmaids, parents and finally the bride herself made it to the altar. Whew! There was too much more, including the backing band leading the entire wedding party and guests out into the street for a Second Line to end all Second Lines. The after party was a who's who of amazing musicians all night long.

Having been gone I missed the KFJC annual James Brown birthday celebration "Doin' to Death". The first show features JB in all his funky glory. Get your dance shoes on for this one.

The second hour starts with my feature on NOLA. I bought some local music while I was in town. Would you blame me? I actually start the hour off with Chicago rocker, and old friend of Eric McFadden's, and my new bestie, Adam Mackintosh's "Teenage Phase". I can't stop playing this song. I'm playing it now as I'm writing this. Listen to it and you'll understand why. I hope he writes a song about the Roach Motel we both shared. That was fun.

I close out the night with my tribute to what many consider to be the greatest Grateful Dead show of all time, May 8, 1977. This being the 40th anniversary of said show, I would be remiss if I didn't pay homage. I don't consider it the best show they ever played. I do think it deserves to be in anyone's collection. I would also place it in the top 5 or 10. It was probably their best show of the Spring 77 tour, and the recording itself is pristine. The playing is spot on and the jams are tight. A bit too tight at times. What makes it so highly considered is that this bootleg, which first made an appearance in trading circle back in the mid-80s, was the first high quality recording and show of it's kind from that era to make the trading scene. Everyone loved it, and deservedly so. But to call it the BEST EVER? I can think of at least five other shows throughout their career that beat it. But that's for another post at another time.
