The weather outside is frightful but the music is so delightful, so since you're stuck inside anyway, might as well tune in, tune in, tune in.

It's that time of year once again when I choose one year to focus two hour on. My Annual Annual is a great opportunity for me to go deeper into the music for a particular year, playing music for you that really deserves to be rediscovered. I started this show in 2011 when I wanted to go deeper into one of my favorite years for music: 1971. What a year, indeed! Following that I took one show every November to host this special. Below you can find the links for the previous 11 episodes.

Monday night, 8-10pm Pacific is all about 1968! I was considering hosting a Bay Area only 1991 show, but after chatting with a radio colleague about the greatness of 1968, I just knew that was the year for me! 1968 was a great year for Acid Rock and Psychedelic Rock. My fear is I'm not going to have nearly enough time to share with you everything I want to. This may take two weeks!

Don't expect this to be a Top 20 show. That's never been something I would do. I won't select the playlist until I'm on the air. I like to be listening to a song to direct me to my next track. I can share a few of the artists I'm bringing along for the ride: Jimi Hendrix, Moby Grape, Silver Apple, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly, Traffic, Pink Floyd, Os Mutantes, Soft Machine, Fifty Foot Hose, Mothers of Invention and so much more.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #462: Never Draw Attention To The Mistakes

Way back in my college radio days (even before that when I was taking announcing classes at College of San Mateo (CSM), from KKHI announcer, and father of the deepest radio voice I have ever heard, Daniel Odom), I was told to never draw attention to the mistakes. No one really ever pays attention, and if one makes mention of it, then the listener is apt to start to judge the announcer and hence, the station itself. 

I took that to heart.

Once at KFJC, when I was know at the Reverend Dah Wave, I couldn't help but trip over my inexperienced tongue from time to time; especially in the middle of the night, where the new DJs are expected to host shows for six months before moving onto a non-graveyard shift. Those graves were used to learn more about the vast musical library KFJC has, and learn my voice.

Mistakes were made.

I started taking the approach of drawing attention to them if the moment warranted it. More often than not the moment did not warrant it. I'm pretty deft when it comes to reading and enunciation. My dear friend Amacker "Rocket J. Squirrel" Bullwinkle, who hosted Friday's 6-10am would often co-host our transition when I came on for the 10-2pm Jazz/Soul/Funk show I hosted "Temple of the Bird". She would throw a PSA at me (that's public service announcement to those who do not know), testing to see how well I could read it live on air, without a pre-read. You cannot fool good Reverend.

As for the moments where I slipped up in a miserable manner, often not taking the time to thoroughly check the music I had just played to back announce properly, I would run a lot of names and titles together, and forget something vital, leading a handful of "ums" and "ahs". I would then purposely stumble and bumble in an even more animated way, to show that I am above nothing. 

Monday night was a lot like this. Our new studio has a lot of needs, including a new turntable and a new router. And my beloved 5TB WD hard drive is starting to crap out. I purchased a 12TB backup this week, and am backing everything up as I write. Back it up, folks.

Monday night my hard drive crapped out a few times, and only when I was about to move into a song. And the server was being a real bore. And the damnable turntable was mocking me! This led to more than one mic break being something akin to a disaster movie, sans the soundtrack; which is sad, because I have an impressive soundtrack collection.

We got the server working, I have a new hard drive, and my fingers are crossed someone got turntable one working properly, leading up to my next show, this Monday 8-10PM PST, featuring the return of my delightful daughter, Little Lauson Hell to the Radio Valencia studio.

Every year leading up to my Annual Annual, I suffer and strain to decide on a year I want to focus on. This year was no different. Do I want to reach back pre-1970? How about something a little more recent, like the lost year of 2020? I asked for suggestions, and a bunch flew my way, but the one that really stuck came from my buddy, and teaching colleague, Eric, who suggested 1978. The emergence of English post-punk, metal was evolving, funk was redefining itself against a backdrop of too much disco. There is a lot to choose from when it comes to 1978.

I took at least a week to pour over my options. In the end I sat with approximately four hours of music to fit into about an hour forty minutes, mixed with talk and highlights from the year. I tried to mix it up, and keep you on your toes. I really appreciate all of the many comments that kept coming during the show, and I'm sorry I didn't take any requests. Shows like these are pretty well mapped out by the time I flip the switch.

I got me a hankerin' for some country music tonight. So how about two hot shows that'll have you begging for more? First up, an hour from the two great Texas singer/songwriters performing together: Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, live from the Cactus Cafe in Austin, Texas in 1991. This is an amazing performance that was broadcast live on the FM.

The second hour comes from the great Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band, featuring James Burton on guitar. This was shortly before Burton's exit from the Hot Band, and they were on fire throughout this great set. This show was recorded live in Hamburg, Germany on March 31, 1976. It's a crystal clear soundboard, liberated from the bootleg: "I Really Had A Ball Last Night"

Sometimes taking a week off is great for recharging my creative juices. Radio is an artform. You think you could do this? Well, actually you probably could. It's not brain surgery. If you tune in regularly, then you know that I like mixing up genres, and tonight is a perfect example. Garage, grunge, proto-punk, LA punk, Americana, Experimental, and too many more for my brain to consider right now.

I add some tasty live treats in there for the special sauce, and you get two hours of the finest audio stew your earbuds can handle. 

I sprinkle in my share of covers and some local Bay Area faves too! My goodness there's something here for everybody, including your retched GOP uncle. You should really kick him in the head when you get a chance.

Is he or isn't he? Apparently he is. Dang. I saw Tom Petty three times in the late 80s and early 90s, including the very first Bridge School benefit in 1986, which is the only one I attended. I also was able to see him with Lenny Kravitz opening (the Let Love Rule tour). Petty always put on such a great show. I gave up going to shows in large venues many years ago, but I always felt that I seeing Petty again would be fun, regardless of the size of the venue.

There are few artists I would see in a large venue today. I would see Neil Young in a large venue if Crazy Horse was backing him. Other than that I prefer a venue ranging from a size 50-1500 people. The more intimate the better.

Speaking of an intimate setting, my bride took me to see Oh Sees (no more "Thee") last week at the Great American Music Hall. Not only was it a brilliant show, it was without a doubt, the loudest show I have ever been to. Even guitarist/lead singer John Dwyer was heard to ask if that show wasn't louder than the previous night's? I'm seeing them again in December at The Chapel. Get your tickets before they sell out.
best venue in SF:

Last night I was lucky enough to catch what has been marked as the "Last Polka" of the great SF punk-polka band, Polkacide, at Bottom of the Hill. After 30+ years they're hanging up their lederhosen. I spent a good 30 minutes in the polkapit. and boy did I feel it. The four original members are grandparent age now, and I'm guessing that having 10 people in the band makes it difficult to make the scene too often. I'm hoping for an annual reunion at the very least.

On a completely unrelated note, my bride Catherine gave birth to our little boy, Bodhi Miles Hell this past Thursday! We couldn't be more excited about this fella coming into our lives. I'll be taking a few weeks off from my show so I can be home with the little fella, fitting him with black t-shirts and guitar picks, and singing to him my favorite Melvis and Grateful Dead tunes. I can't wait to have him and Little Lauson Hell both in the studio with me in the years to come.
