Hell's Kitchen Radio #327: Express Yourself

After so many shows where it feels like I'm paying tribute to some lost musical genius, I needed to cleanse my Hellish soul. This show is sure to get your toes tappin'. On the menu are some classics and some tracks that are soon to be classic in your collection.

I also take a few minutes in the middle of the program to discuss my current thoughts on the state of commercial radio (one of my favorite topics), and the possible (and hopefully impending) bankruptcy of iHeart Radio (formerly Clear Channel). I'd love your thoughts on this. Feel free to leave a comment.

Just take a look at this playlist. Curtis, JB, Fela, Beasties, Brother Ray, Last Poets, The Meters, Aretha, Toots, Parliament, NWA!!!!!!!

DAMN, GET ON THE GOOD FOOT!

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #288: Take Me On A Little Trip

Time for a trip around the globe, musically speaking. Since we're early in the new year and I have yet to check out any new releases this seemed like the perfect time to focus on some international sounds. Tonight we go to West Africa, Central Africa, Thailand, Iran Turkey, India, Jamaica, and England for some really groovy excursions. When I shop for music I have a rule: if I purchase three records, one must be from the international section. Doing this I have really grown that genre over the years.

The show is pretty groovy throughout, so don't be shy about dancing while you're diggin' it.

I close the show with a very hard to find live acoustic version of New Speedway Boogie by the Grateful Dead. I'm going to commit to playing more music from my extensive live archive in the second hour of my show each week. This June I'll be co-hosting Rock Fight with sound engineer John Karr. Perhaps I have finally met my match. Tune in to find out.

***NEWS FLASH****It's time for the 2017 Run For The Lilies contest. You email me a list of ten famous people you believe will meet their maker by December 31, 2017, and the person with the most correct selections "wins". The only rule: you may not partake in their demise. Email me at mrjohnhell@gmail.com by 5PM Sunday, January 29th, 2017. I will announce the 2016 winner on my show (and their winning list) on Monday, January 30th.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #186: Dubbing Man

International artists, and Dub is on the turntables for tonight. Burning Man is a wash, so listen in and get DUB with it.

On Saturday night Radio Valencia broadcast live from Bottom of the Hill, for the annual Strummerville New Music Foundation benefit. So many great and talented musicians performing the music of Joe Strummer and The Clash. You can hear that show by going here. Most impressive was Eric McFadden's performance of Bankrobber, done in dub style. So when I was considering what to play for you tonight, and staring as I often do at my music collection for hours on end, it hit me like a brick that I should be doing a show of Dub for you.

The last half hour of the show reaches out towards other international sounds. This is a great show to either sit back and get truly deep into, or even to have on in the background while you're moving around the house, or taking a seriously deep bong hit. Either way, I think you'll really enjoy what I've created for you tonight.

A Season in Hell #139: Bears! Attack!

Want to see some great music this weekend? You should go check out Bears! Bears! Bears! at Cafe duNord this Saturday night. They've been compared to a Pixes-meets-Joy Division, and I think that's OK. They've got some driving rhythms and excellent lyrics. Go have fun. Tell them John Hell sent you.

What is quality community radio if it isn't about interviewing and playing great local music? I love Radio Valencia more and more each day. You should too. Go check out the website and all the other great shows. You can thank me later.

I'm off next week so the boys in Eclectic Dyspepsia can celebrate their one year anniversary by broadcasting from 6-10. But I'll be back on July 1st with my bi-annual special Rock Fight #10!!!

Me and Rotten Ronnie Donovan will be doing the bootleg throw down that you crave. Special guests will be in the studio as well. You do not want to miss this.  July 1st, 6-10PM.

To get yourself warmed up, check out the last few Rock Fight's by going here.

See you in two weeks.

A Season in Hell #109: John Hell Wins the Pennant!

I'm 3-0 in broadcasting when the Giants win something big! Yay me! And yay to the San Francisco Giants for sweeping the highly favored (for some unknown reason) Detroit Tigers.

I just got back from a great weekend in Portland, Oregon. This town is like San Francisco North, but the people are all really friendly...and white. Where are all the people of color at? I mean really, this is one white town.

I was also expecting a lot more Portlandia-like experiences. I was a bit disappointed. Where the quirkiness? Where are Fred and Carrie? I did drink my fair share of local beers though. So tasty. I recommend you hit up Bailey's Tap Room. They have 20 of the finest west coast micro-breweries on tap. That was a joyous night, I tell you.

We also spent quite a few hours at the nations largest independently owned book sore, Powell's. It's  city block large. DAMN! So many books. It heavenly and a bit overwhelming at the same time.

Being a music junkie I had to hit up the local record stores. I was happy to find Jackpot records and there ever so fine collection of new and used vinyl. I can buy pretty much everything I've ever wanted at Aquarius and Amoeba. The great thing about visiting music towns is the opportunity to find local music that I cannot find at home. My trip was fortuitous. I found this ripping LP from a Portland band, Wizard Rifle. Damn, they are loud. LOVE IT! I played them tonight, so be listening for them. I also found a double 10" of a 2012 Ty Segall Band release, "Slaughterhouse", which I've never heard of, nor seen. Thanks Portland, and thanks to Jackpot Records, a local Portland record label and store.

And the rain. Did I mention the rain? It rained a lot. A lot. Really, a lot.

I played a few songs in tribute to Hurricane Sandy, because I could. I did not play anything in the memory of a longtime friend and collaborator, Paul Addis, who chose to take his life last Saturday night by jumping in front of a BART train in SF. I'll save that for when I have my head better wrapped around it.
