Hell's Kitchen Radio #401: Can You Taste What Hell Is Puttin' Down?

This is a "keep you on your toes" kind of show. And you think you know me? That's cute. You're cute. You live alone? That must suck in the time of COVID-19 to live alone. I hope you at least have a cat and Netflix.

The first hour of this here show is some funk, some metal, some psych, and a few other trinkets thrown in for good measure. The second hour is mostly new music, featuring brand spankin' new music from Oakland's KnightressM1. Violinist Emily Palen's power trio has a powerful new release that I am super excited to share with you all, "Polarity Integrate". What this woman does with a violin should be featured in the most hallowed halls rock and metal! I can't wait to hear more.

Two hours is never enough. I'm always just getting warmed up. And I don't even dive into my live bootleg stash. I've been saving that for Wednesday's noon-2. John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza is my effort to take the sting of missing live shows off of your shoulders, even if it's in the middle of your work day. You're all working from home anyway, aren't you?

Take a look at these tasty slices below, and dive in with gusto.

Enjoy.

I hate hate hate being behind in posting my show podcasts! So sorry for the delay. Life got in the way. I hope you can find it in heart to forgive old Hell here. Gee, just take a look at that amazing playlist, will ya?!?!?!?!

I missed my show last week and instead took my daughter, Little Lauson Hell, to her very first Melvins show! She loved them and the opener: Hepa.Titus, featuring former Melvins' bassist Kevin Rutmanis. She even added his band to her Spotify. Raisin' 'em right.

I've got something special in store for you all tonight. Tune in 8-10 and I'll whisper it in your ear.

Enjoy.

Or perhaps you wish to listen to all of my shows? Good choice. Go HERE!

It's rare that I have two guests in one night but tonight that's what it's all about. Long time listeners of my show know that I always enjoy supporting local artists, So tonight two local artists! In the first hour Julie Anderson of Altered Barbie is back once again to talk about the all Barbie exhibition happening at Shotwell 50 Gallery located at of all places 50 Shotwell in the Mission. If you haven't seen this you're really missing out. Just picture it, hundreds of Barbie dolls all altered for your perverse delight. It's truly a wonder of nature. The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday noon to 7 PM, And Sundays noon to 5 PM. There is a poetry reading Thursday night and the closing gala is a week from Saturday, November 15th. Click on the link for more details.

Many of you may be aware that I used to MC Power Tool Drag Races at Ace Junkyard here in San Francisco. What you may not be aware of is that the landlord pulled the rug out from under Bill "The Junkman" Kennedy and closed the junkyard a few short years ago. Bill was a long time facilitator of the underground art scene here in the city, and Ace was the prime location for artists such as SRL, Life-Size Mouse Trap, Cyclecide, Seemen, and other metal obscurists to obtain those hard-to-find pieces which made their creations come to life. In the studio tonight filmmaker Yasi Mak talking about her documentary: Ace in the Hole, about Ace Junkyard and Bill "The Junkman" Kennedy. Bill is in the studio as well, telling great stories about his years at Ace. There is a Kickstarter campaign that ends today at 3PM to raise money to support the film. Please consider donating.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #172: It's a Radioman's World

I said it once, I've said it 7000 times, I have a very large. And there're some days when I just sort of feel like playing a whole bunch of different stuff on the show. Some weeks it's jazz, so weeks it's blues, some weeks it hard rock and metal, But tonight it's just sort of all over the place. So forgive me for not seeming to have any type of focus tonight, but I think you'll agree with me by the end of this two-hour piece of artwork that yes, yes indeed, this truly is a delectable piece of art.

Doin' It To Death 2013

Today is the 7th annual Doin' It To Death, James Brown Birthday Extravaganza, at KFJC.

I spent nine amazing years at the Wave of the West, KFJC. For four years I hosted the Friday, mid-day Jazz/Soul/Funk show, where I would play a halh-hour of James Brown at noon. I called it the "Brown Bag Lunch". Damn that was fun!

After James died on Christmas 2006, it just made sense that KFJC did an annual birthday celebration for him. Considering his birthday is May 3rd, and KFJC hosts the Month of Mayhem every May, where DJs host specials all month long, it was the perfect opportunity to show love for the Godfather of Soul.

Every year I host the prime time slot. Although I love the classics, and my favorite era was 68-75, I also love to play live, mashups, remixes, and covers too. I've also found some other ditties that I know you're going to love.

You can check out each our of my set by clicking on the links below. It's only up on the KFJC site for the next week and a half, so get to it. I believe you can download all of it, so you can enjoy JB everywhere you go.

A Season in Hell #103: Welcome Home

Tonight is my first show in our new home, deep in the heart of the Mission. We found a great spot on the top floor of an old brick building on the corner of Mission and 20th. I have to thank a great crew of DJs and staff for building the studio within our new space. We went from a 35 square foot (you read right) room, to about 650 sq. ft. WOW!

The opportunities are endless.

Today also marked the one year anniversary of the Occupy movement, so I through a set in there to celebrate. It's danceable. Enjoy.

I was all over the place in terms of genres tonight. From Bollywood to Thai Funk, from dub to prog-rock, you'll get your fill.

A Season in Hell #99: Pull Your Pants Up

Tonight I could have beaten Usain Bolt. Maybe not his ego though. Then again. I wasn't on last week because I went camping at the great Camp & Sons, and participated in some debauchery, equaled only by those sturdy woodsmen of Bohemian Grove. Let's just say there were some unmentionables left behind. Anyway, I needed a week to recoup. So, here I am bright eyed and bushy tailed.

Most of the music tonight is from my library, so you know it's going to be tasty. And to look at the play list you'll notice that I'm mixing genres quite a bit. Isn't that what free form radio is all about?

Radio Valencia celebrated its 2nd anniversary on August 11th. We're all pretty excited about this. I'm going to be writing a separate piece about this in the next couple of days. Please look for it. In the meantime, Matthew Lasar of Radio Survivor hit me up to write a piece for them. You can check it out here. It talks about where we've been and where we're going. Speaking about where we're going, Radio Valencia is MOVING!!! It's time to stretch out a bit. We found a great space you'll be hearing a lot about in the weeks and months to come. A bigger space means bigger sound too. Yay!

In the meantime, check out the playlist, and click the links too.
