Hell's Kitchen Radio #268: Hell's Squad

This is where a picture of my daughter and I is supposed to sit. I don't see it either, but I can tell you it's really quite something to behold. You'll just have to use your imagination.

Lauson and I had so much fun last Monday night. I think you can tell by the playlist, but mostly through the banter. We spoke a lot about her love of sloths. Lauson's songs are designated by "LH".

The second hour has a couple of tunes celebrating the birthday of the late, great local boy, Jerry Garcia, who would have turned 74 on this date, August 1st.

In celebration of the 14th annual Jerry Garcia Day coming up this Sunday, August 14th at Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park in SF, I will be spinning two hours of Jerry and Grateful Dead tonight on Radio Valencia. This coming Saturday night, August 13th, I'll be spinning six hours of live Dead, from 8PM-2AM at Doctor's Lounge, located at 4826 Mission Street in the Excelsior District of SF. Come on down and dance.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #267: Election Night Special

Back on the air after a month away. I don't care to take so much time away from the aural pleasures that radio brings, but it had to be done. I traveled with my wife and daughter up to the great Northwest Territories! By that I mean Vancouver, Seattle and Portland.

I won't share the clusterfuck we got into at SFO when they wouldn't let my 11 year old daughter fly without a passport. Needless to say, we made it to all of our destinations, albeit about $1000 less in our pockets than I would have liked. ugh

We spent two days wandering around the EMP in Seattle. If you travel to that great town, please do your self a favor and go there. If you're a music fan, and I know that you are, you won't regret it.

Voodoo Donuts are overrated. There, I said it. Who the hell needs a Cap'n Crunch donut? Besides I live in San Francisco. We have Bob's. I do love me some Portland though. I will most likely retire there and start a radio station. HA!

On with the show.

The first hour pays homage to my late teens and early 20s. Spending time at the EMP inspired me to go back and listen to items on my shelf that may have collected a bit of dust.

The second hour is full of some tasty and rare surprises. A "new" Betty Davis LP issue of an oft-rumored Miles Davis-produced session was worth the wait. I have some new Melvins in there, as well as a number of live cuts from the likes of Tom Waits, Dave Bromberg, Allman Brothers.

I also blather on about the election, and croon about how much I love you.

Next Monday night, Little Lauson Hell makes an appearance. Tune in 8-10PM every Monday night!

I'm going to Bob's now.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #266: Sauce And A Little Hell

It's been WEEKS since I've hosted a show. Here's my most recent one, which featured both the wife (Saucy) and the daughter (Little Lauson Hell)! I think this is the first time I've had them both in the studio with me at the same time!!!

It's a family affair tonight! I've got the return of Little Lauson Hell and my dear bride, Saucy in the studio with me. Will we air dirty laundry live on the radio? Lauson and Saucy chose much of the music. It's a wee more poppy than you'll usually hear in the Kitchen. Don't let that stop you from enjoying it. And the banter is...woo hoo! Boy, do you get to learn about this family! Yowza!

Sorry it's taken so long to post this. I took a few weeks off, and traveled to the great Pacific Northwest. We tried to fly to Vancouver, but wouldn't you know it, them Canadiens say we need to have a passport for the little one to fly up there. So we flew to Seattle, drove to Vancouver, then drove back to Seattle, before ending our 9 days in Portland. Fabulousness was had by all!

I'll be back on Radio Valencia this coming Monday night at 8PM (PDST). Tune in.

Enjoy.

Here's another recent broadcast that didn't get posted. This is from June 20th. What a mix! Lots of new music and plenty of music that's new to you. And check out the SET OF THE WEEK!!!

This coming Monday night, Little Lauson Hell will be back in the studio with me. What will this 11 year old wonder pick to play? Your guess is as good as mine (but if she knows what's good for her, she'll stay away from that pop crap). Tune in this Monday at 8PM.

I actually have about six shows over the past six years that I have yet to post. What the hell is up with that?! I'll do my best to get to those soon enough, as long as you promise to actually check them out. Feel free to comment on any and all of my show posts too! And please share this with any of your music-loving friends.

Enjoy.

How I love to teach the next generation of great DJs!!! Tonight I had the pleasure of hosting the next great Radio Valencia DJ, Gatsby Fassbinder, who hosts "Tighten Up Your Wig" every Thursday from 4-6PM. He chose some amazing tracks to play this evening (all of which I marked "GB"). He easily won "Set of the Night" as well. This Gatsby fella is pretty darn good. Give him a listen.

I dished up some tasty treats as well. Last Poets, Nick Cave, William Shatner, new Boris, and new Magnetic Zeros (they appear to be in the verge of dropping the Edward Sharpe prefix).

Something for the whole family to devour, every Monday night, 8-10PM on Radio Valencia.

Next Monday night, guitarist Michael Cobra will guest DJ with me. His last appearance in the kitchen was a memorable one. Take a listen here, and then tune in next week.

Enjoy.
