Hell's Kitchen Radio #485: Jay Blakesberg

There are good interviews and then there are great interviews. Monday night's interview with photographer Jay Blakesberg falls into the latter category. That means it was GREAT, if you have issues with the whole "latter", "former" thing.

Jay has been taking pictures of live events since a teenager in the 1970s. His stories, starting with his youthful debauchery, taking his camera into shows, capturing bands in ways no one else was even considering, and leading onto a successful and exciting career as a photojournalist are really quite striking.

What I love about interviewing people like Jay, ask him a question and he can really spin a good yarn.

We spoke about his latest book: RETROBLAKESBERG: Vol. 1 The Film Years, which covers photos all taken on film (read: not digital) from his high school days in 1970 to 2008. This coffee table book is a real treasure, as is Jay.

Most of the music played tonight came from albums where Jay contributed photos. Gotta love that!

Next Monday night, August 22, join me when I interview Myles Boisen, guitarist, composer, improvisor, and record producer/engineer, best known around the Bay Area for his twin-necked twanging in The Splatter Trio. We'll be talking about his new release featuring him on piano. I'm really looking forward to this.

The Radio Valencia studio is looking better each week: new paint job and soundproofing. We're getting our logo on the awning out front next week! Thanks to our engineering team (aka: JazzNazz) we have the turntables and CD players working better than ever! But we still need you. This is an out-of-pocket venture. Bringing you great programming is our mission, and we can really use your help. Please consider donating to Radio Valencia by going to our PayPal (we are financially sponsored by SF IndieFest) and throwing a few bones our way. Every dime is spent on station needs (rent and equipment mostly). I thank you in advance.

Time now to sit back and enjoy two hours of aural delights.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #278: Where Are My Manners?

Let's admit it, we need to escape from reality today more than ever before. Amiright? Music might be the only thing that can get us through the next four years. I know we're all really emotional right now. Life is hard. I don't care if you're a high school student suffering from the expectations of your parents and your school, or if you're a 40-something slogging through the doledrums of your 40 hour work week, with the boss breathing down your neck; you need a break.

Consider this program as your respite from a world gone mad.

Sometimes I even surprise myself. There are at least three SETS OF THE NIGHT tonight! If radio is the art of the segue, then you are in for a real treat.

Honestly, this show is easily in my top 10 that I have hosted in the past 28 years.

Enjoy.

As much as I enjoy interviewing bands, I really enjoy bringing my musician friends into the studio to guest DJ. So it just makes sense that guitar slinger, Eric McFadden guest DJd with me Monday night, and to KICK OUT THE JAMS!!! Eric and I are serious brothers-from-another-mother. When it comes to music we could jam/talk/listen-to/scream at/jump up and down to, and generally appreciate whatever you throw our way. It's kind of ridiculous.

And two hours was not near enough time. The music is awesome, the banter is SICK. This is by far one of my most favorite shows, EVER!

Eric posted a video to his Instagram account of us rocking out. You can see it here.

I know you're going to enjoy this one. Please share with music fans everywhere.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #173: My Own Personal Torment

I have a very large music collection. Too large some might say. But I'm a DJ, so shut up. Anyway, a lot of people give me CDs, asking them to play their band. I don't keep those, usually. Mostly, those go to the radio station. Others give me mix CDs, saying that I'll just love their mix. I often re-gift those. Often, but not always, and NEVER from my dear friend, and brother-from-another-mother, Mikl Em. His mixes are always thoughtful and irreverent. Yes, I know what that word means. Like I said, brother-from-another-mother.

As I was considering what to play for tonight's show, I found a mix CD he made for me a few years back, titled "Songs about God". I gave it a listen a realized, HEY, I can make a show out of this. I have lots of music about God. Not all of these songs are the most respectful, but then again my name is John Hell.

So tonight I bring you my own personal torment. I think you'll enjoy it. it was fun to put together.

Enjoy.
