John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza - Monday 6-8PM Pacific - Ty Segall 2016 and 2019

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza

Monday's 6-8PM Pacific

http://radiovalencia.fm

Tonight I'm headed to see Ty Segall's very loud side-project, FUZZ with Chad Ubovich and Charles Mootheart. This is the second (or third) time this show has been rescheduled. Cross your fingers it's happening. It'll be my third time seeing this group. I've seen Ty Segall probably about a dozen times in total now.

It's safe to say I have a crush on Ty Segall. I'll eat up anything this man releases (enter pun here).

That being said I wanted to set you up for a fun filled two hours (actually four hours) of Ty themed madness Monday night. Let's start off with a stellar performance from Ty Segall and the Muggers from February 27, 2016, from Webster Hall, NYC, in support of his "Emotional Mugger" release. So many treats during this show. I really appreciate that he'll throw new songs in his set, but he's never afraid of digging back into his vast catalogue either. Even though this is listed as his eighth official release, I know damn well by 2016 he'd put out a hefty barrage of 7" and 12" material. Just look at my record shelves!!!

Lineage: Soundboard (engineer: Ty's FOH) + Schoeps MK41V (at SBD, DFC, PAS)>>Zoom F8>2x24bit/48kHz WAV>Adobe Audition CS 5.5 (align, mix down)>Izotope Ozone 5 (EQ, effects, image)>Audacity 2.0.5 (track, amplify, downsample, dither)>FLAC ( level 8 )

For the second show tonight I have a treat from Morning Comes Ecelctic on KDRW, July 31, 2019 (ah, it
seems like a lifetime ago), in support of his "First Taste" release, supposedly his twelfth official full length. Yeah, right. I cut out the interview and left the tasty licks. You're welcome.

Lineage: FM Receiver -> CDRW700 -> EAC -> Soundforge -> FLAC

And since I'm headed to see the show tonight I cued up a rerun from a Ty Segall special I produced in 2018, from 8-10PM Monday night. I know you're going to dig this.

Next Monday, April 4th, I'm excited to finally be interviewing metal violinist Emily Palen of KnightressM1. She has some new material to share and much to talk about. Please join us then.

You can find my mostly-complete list of live shows right here. Have a request? Leave a comment.

Support these bands. Buy their officially released music and merch, and never ever sell live bootlegs. These are for trade only.

Stick around Monday's 8-10PM Pacific for my weekly music mix, Hell's Kitchen Radio. Lots of new music to share with you every week.

Enjoy and pay it forward.

What a fun night this was, and I think you can tell from the between set banter. I know, I know, you've come for the music, and the music you shall have. Though Spring is in the air, other than the first track, I wasn't thinking of producing a spring-themed show. You can think of this as one if that helps you sleep at night, but honestly it was just me throwing down.

New music from an Emily Palen side project: Othered. She'll be in the studio April 4th to talk up new KnightressM1 recordings. I have been dying to interview Emily, so this promises to be fun.

I've got some Jazz, 60s Psych, Funk, Metal, Garage, and Iggy Pop. What else could you ask for?

We have a fundraiser for Radio Valencia this Sunday, March 27th, 4-10PM at our next door neighbors house, Make Out Room, 3225 22nd Street, in the Mission District of San Francisco. We need money for new equipment and upkeep. We also desperately need to spruce up the new space. Info on the flyer below. We would love to see you there.

Enjoy and please share.

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza - Monday 6-8PM Pacific - Cream (1968) & Derek and the Dominos (1970)

Clapton. Is he really any good? Overrated? What's his deal? Cocky, for sure. I would have loved to have seen the look on his face the night he met Jimi Hendrix.

The radio hits were well and good, but when I discovered Cream when I was a young teenager, hungry for more than what I was hearing on the FM dial. I grabbed Disraeli Gears and practically wore that record out within a few months. Wheels of Fire didn't last that much longer. I know I had a few copies of each. Cream's version of British Psych-Rock-Blues was on an entirely other level. Way beyond the stratosphere. Maybe it was the tension between the three of them. It was definitely the tension. Oh, and the fact that they are the prototypical power trio, was a big seller for me. I am weak for power trios.

Since I began collecting bootlegs in the early-mid 1980s, Cream was always a band that I wanted to get my hands on. To date I have 15 shows throughout their short two  year career, including all of their BBC sessions, all the way through their final tour.

Tonight I want to share one of my favorite shows from Cream's final tour, much of which has already been officially released. This show was not. October 20, 1968, San Diego Sports Arena, San Diego, CA. This is their final California performance and one month before their dissolution.

Lineage: Soundboard > Silvers > Flac

And this is just the warm up act!

The headliner tonight also features Eric Clapton. I really fell hard for Derek and the Dominos. Once I found them I didn't put them down for 20+ years. I loved that Duane Allman recorded with them. I love how this band coalesced around Delaney and Bonnie and Friends.

Wow, this band. Hot damn! Where bootlegs are concerned, it is very challenging to find soundboards from this band. And only once (from what I know) did Duane Allman join them on stage (December 1, 1970 Curtis Dixon Hall, Tampa, FL). It was too expensive for bands to record live shows of themselves back in the 70s. Tape was expensive. Too bad.

They release the "Live at the Fillmore East", culled from two shows in October 1970. What an incredible album.  Tonight I have the music from those two shows that was not officially released. These are the Fillmore outtakes.

Lineage: Superb stereo soundboard quality from previously uncirculated source.

You can find my mostly-complete list of live shows right here. Have a request? Leave a comment.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #470: Let's Celebrate the TL

There are neighborhoods around San Francisco I get excited about, and then there are neighborhoods I'd just rather avoid all-together. I've spent countless days in rough hoods like Bayview, Hunters Point, Western Addition, and the like. I've seen some crazy things in these neighborhoods. I've participated in crazy things in these neighborhoods. And I have often asked myself if I felt safe? Trust me when I tell you there were plenty of times, walking in the middle of the night, deep in the heart of some neighborhood, where I knew the streets well during the day, but at night something else happens entirely.

I do not spend much time in the Tenderloin. Other than seeing shows at the Great American Music Hall, a few services at Glide, or taking my students on a field trip to the federal courthouse (which is more Civic Center than TL), this just isn't a place I like to find myself. It's not that it's crime-infested. It's junkie-infested. And why? This is where the treatment centers are located!

It's that energy I just can't be around.

So imagine my surprise when I got a call from Stephen DePace of Flipper, telling me about an upcoming  exhibit at the Tenderloin Museum titled "Sounds of the Tenderloin"? The first words out of my mouth were "there's a museum in the TL?". There is indeed a museum in the TL. The Tenderloin Museum opened its doors in 2015.

And here I thought I knew (almost) everything about the history of music in San Francisco.

Stephen brought the exhibition curator Dale Hoyt over to the RV studios to talk about the show and some history of the TL that was music to my ears. There is a lot of information over at the museum website, and some great shows coming up in support of the exhibit, including our friends Flipper at Great American Music Hall, May 26th.

Let's all go on a field trip to the Tenderloin Museum to check out this exhibit together. Just watch out for the needles.

Enjoy.

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza - Monday 6-8PM Pacific - The Who - September 29, 1969

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza

Monday's 6-8PM Pacific

I was lucky enough to see The Who on their reunion tour in 1989. This of course was many years removed from the passing of the maniac drummer, Keith Moon. I didn't care. I got to see the three remaining members rock out, hard. HARD!

But this would be nothing compared to the epic 14 years with Moon manning the drum throne. I actually have the show at the Cow Palace where Moon is so drunk he falls off the throne and Townshend asks if there's anyone in the audience who can play the drums? Crazy.

I have a love/meh relationship with The Who. There are times when I go hard for this band, and I really am blown away at the lyricism of Townshend, and the musicianship of the band, often comparing their styles to The Kinks, another of the first wave British Invasion bands. Other times I get bored with them. I think I wish they had an additional guitarist on stage with them, as the power-trioesque aspect of the three musicians did not come across as well-rounded as bands like Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath, both of whom had a similar lineup.

In this show it sounds as if the stage has about a doze people on it all rocking to their highest peak!

September 29, 1969 at Het Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Netherlands was the place to be. Keith Moon fell hard on the stairs coming to the stage and was still bleeding from his head when the show began. Then Princess (now Queen) Beatrix of the Netherlands was in attendance. You're going to get some of the best performances from their first five years and all of Tommy! This was a band seriously on top of their game! And this Pre-FM source kicks the hell out of what the listeners at home heard.

I know you're going to dig this!

Lineage: Pre-FM (Recorded by the AVRO) 2-track soundboard mix for recording > Master Reel-to-Reel > Reel-to-Reel (1) > MD (0) -> CDR (0) > SHN (for vine) (0) > Wav > CDR (0) > EAC > Remastering 2005 > Master Wavfile > Revisited 2006 > CDwav > FLAC

You inspire me. Thanks for that. I hear from listeners throughout the week, letting me know what they're listening to, and often turning me onto something that I should be playing for you!

Feel free to comment here and let me know how all this is working out for you. What else can I offer? Seriously, how much do I have to bleed for your love?!?!?!?!

In the meantime take a gander at what I served up last Monday night. Funk, dub, indie, spiritual free jazz, post-punk (and NOT The Fall!!!), folk, torch singer, Nashville, legendary punk, Japanese psych-ambient-metal, Satchmo and FUZZ. A little bit for everyone in the family.

Click the link at the top to stream or download this gem, and please feel free to share with music lovers who don't know what they're missing.

And leave a comment.

Enjoy.
