It's nice to have a few weeks off to recharge one's batteries, but considering my weekly show is exactly what I use to recharge my batteries, I felt more empty than ever stepping into the studio on Monday night. True story. I had a few weeks off from work, since I'm a teacher, and you would think I would be traveling the southern continent, or spending many relaxing hours at home, sleeping in late, taking leisurely strolls in my hood. Yeah, you would think that. The truth could not be farther from this. Who am I to complain?

I did buy some tasty vinyl over the break, however. Some rare Grateful Dead, released between 71-75, and some blues LPs that I needed. Yes, needed. I need music. It's my drug of choice. I was thinking of buying some much-needed shoes over the holidays, but instead I bought a Muddy Waters LP, and a Sony Terry and Brownie McGhee LP. Priorities.

I don't have any resolutions for the new year. Resolutions are for suckers. I just keep on keepin' on and let choice be my voice. I should probably cut down on the sugary sweets. Sure, why not? I have switched to black coffee though. No more mocha's for John Hell! It's saving me money, which I can put towards my vinyl addiction, er...um obsession.

Sometime during the week leading up to my show, I must have heard some seriously good Blues playing. Maybe. It's hard to say. Maybe I was realizing that I just don't play enough blues, and was feeling guilty, like I wasn't including one of my beloved children in the fun? It's not like little Bluesy did anything wrong. On the contrary, where would I be today without Blues? It was Blues that taught me how to get over heartbreak. It was Blues that showed me that it was OK to be alone. It was Blues that allowed me to heal, following all my many dark and lonely nights.

Maybe I had too much Blues in my life? Perhaps I needed a break, to recognize just how much I love the Blues? Tonight is full of the Blues. And that's a good thing. Blues can also bring you up. Once you hear a line like "I've been down so long, it looks like up to me", and you know that the singer has it so much harder than you, then you know that you're life just isn't that bad. It's similar to watching a Soap Opera. Their lives are much, much worse than yours.

In the second hour I have brand new music from FUZZ and WAND (who are playing Thursday night at Brick and Mortar, btw!!!)!!!!! Are you KIDDING ME?!?!?!?

There are many brilliant live tunes throughout the night, including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, ZZ Top, Grateful Dead, Blues Brothers, Bob Marley, The Rolling Stones, and George Clinton and P-Funk, featuring Eric McFadden on guitar.

Damn, that's a lot to be grateful for.

This was one GREAT show. Six hours of blistering live performances, and two amazing interviews. For the past 13 Rock Fights, poster artist Ron Donovan has joined me in the studio. Due to unforeseen (but predicted) circumstances, Ron was unable to join me tonight. It didn't matter though, I would have kicked his ass up and down the airwaves like I do every Rock Fight.

I open the show with some great 60s jams. Just look at the playlist! It's rock and psych, leading into proto-punk in the second hour. 70s punk takes over the rest of the hour, before author Linda Kelly comes in to talk up the new edition of her 1995 book "Deadheads", just in time for the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary shows (which I'll be attending in Santa Clara this weekend). You have got to read this book! So many great stories. My interview with Linda is a ton of fun. We played about 90 minutes of brilliant live Dead, from the 67-92. She'll be in the parking lot selling and signing books all weekend long. And she'll be at Proper Fox jewelry store tonight signing and selling.

Local singer-songwriter Travis Hayes came by to talk up his upcoming show, this Saturday night at the Great American Music Hall. He played a few tunes, live in the studio, and shared some stories. What a great guy. Go to this show, and support live, local music.

I finished up the show with some classic rock standouts!!! Led Zeppelin, Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, and more.

I love hosting this show, but six hours is exhausting. And having no co-host just will not do. This December, sound engineer John Karr will be co-hosting Rock Fight 15 with me. John has been doing live and studio sound for over 25 years, and has recorded thousands of great local shows. I look forward to kicking his ass. Tune in.
