A Season in Hell #48: Radio Valencia: Noise and Education

I was walking a friend down Clarion Alley a few weeks ago, when I came across this guy playing “music” on a guitar, plugged into a cassette deck, and running through a small amp. I threw him a Radio Valencia sticker and told him to hit me up. His name is J. Lee and he’s in the studio with me tonight. Wow! I love this town. You can check out his stuff here:

The friend I was walking down the alley happens to be with the National Academy Foundation (NAF), who were in town two weeks ago for their annual education summit, which brings in about 1400 educators from around the nation. I’m a teacher, and I used to teach in a NAF academy. I believe strongly in the need for education reform. I walk the walk. During the conference I had the pleasure of sitting down with some NAF alumni as well as some current 12 graders to discuss how NAF has benefited them. I’ll be playing the interview tonight. A Season in Hell #47: Radio Valencia: Guest DJ Time

A few weeks ago I MC'd a fundraiser for Mici Monster, at the Dovre Club on Valencia. She was raising money for AIDS Walk SF. What a great night. We had lots of acts, and a silent auction. I thought it would be fun to auction off a couple of one-hour guest DJ slots on my show.

Tonight the first of two guest DJs. Jay B will be stepping in during the 8pm hour to play whatever the hell he wants as long as I don't crap all over it.

A Season in Hell #45: Radio Valencia: Space is the Place

In honor of the final Space Shuttle launch last week, I'm premiering the song by local musician Ron Rivas, called "Space Shuttle". It's got a early 70's Neil Young feel to it. I like it a lot. I hope you do too. I do a bit of a space theme. Enjoy the Raymond Scott piece. It's from a 1950 kids LP. And then of course there's The Kinks. Because, well, you know, it's The Kinks.

A Season in Hell #44: Radio Valencia: In Chinese the Number 4 = Death

A couple of Sundays ago I had the extreme pleasure of attending Songwriters Unplugged over at Yoshi's SF. Songwriters Unplugged is a weekly show, that features a set from three local singer/songwriters. It's a great way for a great venue to support local talent. Radio Valencia then plays the recorded performance on the following Saturday, 4-6pm. Tune in, you'll be glad you did.

Tonight on A Season in Hell, guitarist Jason Cole of Utah Girl came by. I got to see him and his partner Amy MacClain at the Yoshi's show and was thoroughly impressed.
