I have a lot of records. I don't have as much as some, but what I have a like...a lot. I actually donated a few thousand LPs to Radio Valencia about 7 years ago, but turns out most of that music was shlocky 70s and 80s classic rock dreck and no one wanted it. I can't blame them, neither did I. I'm way beyond quantity over quality.

I own about 2000 LPs today of multiple genres. And I purchase 4-8 LPs a month from numerous records stores around the East Bay and San Francisco. I have a rule that whenever I'm going to purchase at least three items, one of those items needs to be of an international variety, and one needs to be a compilation.

Now, there are varieties of comps that one could choose. There are record label "Best of.." comps, artist tribute comps, reissue comps, geographic comps, genre-centered comps, era comps, and rare never released and b-side comps. The latter are my favorites. Clubs have been known to put out comps as well. When crate digging, finding the perfect comp can really make my day.

On this show I feature some real tasty treats from all areas mentioned above. A two hour special only scratches the surface of the music I have (pun intended). Links are provided for your convenience.

Oh lordy, I brought a lot of music with me tonight. Then I got to the second hour and blew my wad on a 45 minute Grateful Dead jam. It's absolutely AMAZING!!!!

The show starts out with some hip-shaking groove, that I know will get your toes tapping, as well as the aforementioned hips-a-shaking. I've got some brand new music from LA garage/psych rockers, WAND, and a deep cut from the new Moon Duo release as well. FYI, Moon Duo features Ripley Johnson from Wooden Shjips. If you like them, then you're going to like Moon Duo. It's pretty much the same idea. They're playing at Bottom of the Hill on Wednesday, March 25th. Hey, that's tomorrow night!!! Go see this show. It also features Once and Future Band, and Carlton Melton. I suggest you ingest some happiness pills, and dance your ass off. You'll probably need to take Thursday off.

The Grateful Dead segment was from a show 41 years ago Monday at the Cow Palace in Daly City. Interestingly enough the Dead also played a show the following year, in 1975, in Golden Gate Park. Take a look at the jam I chose for you. They only played this sequence three other times. All four were performed between late 1973 and early 1974. And it is blissful. The false start on "Playin'" is enough to get your groove on.

So it's groove, garage and Grateful for your night in Hell's Kitchen. That's enough to satisfy even the choosiest mothers.

A Season in Hell #177: Reaching For The Stars

Listening to my show is really great if you have ADD. I don't have ADD, then again it's possible that some people might suggest that maybe, possibly, perhaps a chance, you never know, maybe John Hell has a little bit of ADD. Never been diagnosed! Though as a child I was told that I was hyperactive, I would very quickly find my way to sugar if it was within smelling distance. With that being said, listening my show is also a soothing and calming experience for many. For instance, take tonights show, please (HA!). I was pretty much in the mood for all Jazz, and okay fine, maybe a little funk, and possibly a little soul. But really in the end doesn't all of that kind of fit into the same nice big fat funk box?

And then something amazing happened, the "legendary" DJ Casey Kasem left this mortal coil. He kicked the bucket. He moved off into the outer worlds. So, of course that left me no choice but to present him and the only way that I find relevant, Which is of course to play Negativland. 

You see, as a long time noncommercial, underground DJ, I have always found the late Mr. Kasem to be, how should I put this politely, a bit of a turd. Yes, it's true I really do believe that he is one of the major forces of evil, or, should I say was one of the major forces of evil in all of the commercial music industry. So I am not really finding that I miss him. As a matter of fact if anything I'm thrilled. I mean no offense. And who knows what that means? I don't mean any offense to his family or his friends or even his fans, but I will tell you that I really believe deep in my heart he caused more damage for talented and original musicians then possibly any of the owners of commercial media in the United States since the 1970s.

So I interrupted some jazz funk soul programming on my show this evening to pay"tribute" to Mr. Kasem, and hoping that may be the final nail in the coffin for himself and people who feel obliged to believe that they can seriously determine what America wants to listen to. Yeah, keep on reaching for the stars there Casey. As a matter fact get as far out here as you possibly can. Maybe now some real talented and original artists will have a chance to make there own impression on the listening audience without you dictating who should be on top? Say hi to Dick Clark for me.
