What do you get when your host has one kid on vacation and the other in daycare all day? You get a very well-prepared program, that's what you get. I normally have a vague idea of how I want my show to go. I listen to music all of the time, so I always know about 25% of the songs I really want to share with you, leading into a show. I bring plenty with me, so it's all about having the experience of what artist or genre may match up with what I am currently playing (let's see Spotify really do that well!). This past week I've had a lot more time on my hands to listen to a bunch of vinyl that has needed my attention.

I also went to see Melvins last week, with Helms Alee opening. What an inspiring show that was! This program is more loud than normal. You get some fine sludge and doom, but you're also going to get some fine angular post-punk, psych, jazz, and more. New music from Helms Alee, Othered, and Ty Segall. That's why you tune in, and I thank you for that. I really do.

Take a look at the playlist below, click the link above to stream, and share with your music-loving friends.

The Radio Valencia studio is looking better each week: new paint job and soundproofing. We're getting our logo on the awning out front next week! Thanks to our engineering team (aka: JazzNazz) we have the turntables and CD players working better than ever! But we still need you. This is an out-of-pocket venture. Bringing you great programming is our mission, and we can really use your help. Please consider donating to Radio Valencia by going to our PayPal (we are financially sponsored by SF IndieFest) and throwing a few bones our way. Every dime is spent on station needs (rent and equipment mostly). I thank you in advance.

Enjoy.

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza - Monday 6-8PM Pacific - Idles (2022) & Amyl and the Sniffers (2022)

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza

Monday's 6-8PM Pacific

After seeing Melvins and Helms Alee this past week I knew I had to get loud for this show. I think I have the perfect solution.

Two shows from the recent Glastonbury Festival. And these shows are really really loud.

First up, from June 24, 2022 are Idles. They aren't Punk. They aren't post-Punk. I don't know what the Hell they are, but they are loud, angry, full of love and here to date you. All of you. This is a brilliant and very aggressive set, including a cover of the Beatles "All You Need is Love".

If you haven't heard Idles yet, you are really in for a treat. Seeing them live is an event like no other. Check out some live videos of them. I actually took this particular show from the video feed. WOW! It's on my to-do list to see these guys live the next time they make it to the Bay Area.

Lineage: C Website Live Stream > download script > joined as .ts file > VOD : BBC website VOD > get_iplayer > .ts > then : VideoRedo TV Suite (version 5.4.84.771 (2018-09-24)) > mkv > mkvmergeGUI v68.0.0 (chapters) > .mkv file > VLC converter to mp3

Our headliner tonight is the cream of the crop. All the way from Australia and ready to show you how absolutely, and justifiably pissed off she is, Amyl and the Sniffers! What a brilliant set this is. Sadly I missed when they were in SF. I was sick, and not COVID sick. I have no idea what the Hell that was about. I haven't been ill since November 2017, and before that summer 1997. No lie. I never get sick. I was really looking forward to that show too. Dang. This will have to do. And it will.

I also took this from the video feed, so go out there and find it so you can watch it too!

I personally love both of these sets for two international bands calling out the US Supreme Court for overturning Roe v. Wade. I mean really, where the fuck is this country going? And I teach law and civics for fuck's sake!

Hell's Kitchen Radio #482: You Had Me At Love Whip

A very inspired show tonight. Maybe it's the great music I've been listening to that I couldn't wait to share with you? Maybe it's the fact that I had a lot of time to choose my music before my show? Maybe it was the many people who came in and out of the studio and I really wanted to play some great music for them as well? Whatever the reason, this was a great show to host.

There's some psychabilly, psychedelia, funk, soul, folk, retro, goth, prog, jazz, classic rock, and even a dirty old one man band!

Hot damn, there's a lot for everyone here. Try that, Spotify! And you know what, they can't. Even Shazam gets stumped by some of what I play. That's what's so great about non-commercial community radio! You have hosts that know the music, not some algorithm that is programmed to tell you what to like. Do you know that program directors at commercial radio stations are now using Spotify to help them program their stations? Where's the human touch?

Radio Valencia brings the human touch in spades!

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza - Monday 6-8PM Pacific - Janis Joplin (1970) & Mdou Moctar (2019)

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza

Monday's 6-8PM Pacific

Here's a pairing I think Bill Graham would have been excited to book. First up, considered one of the all-time greatest guitarists, and chances are you have never heard him: Mdou Moctar, all the way from Agadez, Niger, who performs modern rock music inspired by Tuareg guitar music. His first guitar used bicycle cables as strings. His style is a mix of Tuareg mixed with many rock elements. This guy knows his way up and down a fretboard.

I have a short opening set for you performed live at the Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina, September 07, 2019. This is a clean soundboard recording, where you can hear every note as if you're sitting next to him on the stage.

Lineage: Soundboard + Schoeps MK5c (onstage, XY)>KC5>CMC6 + MBHO MBP603a/KA200N (at SBD, PAS)>Aerco MP-2>>Sound Devices MixPre6>24/48 polyWAV>Adobe Audition CC>Izotope Ozone 5>Audacity 2.3.0>FLAC ( level 8 )

Our headliner tonight is none other than Pearl herself, Janis Joplin along with her backing band the Full Tilt Boogie Band. This show was recorded during the mythical Festival Express tour, featuring Joplin, The Grateful Dead, The Band, and many more amazing acts, all taking the train across Canada during the summer of 1970. If you want to get a look at some of the highlights, including footage of them partying and playing on the train, you can catch the official documentary, released in 2003.

Joplin's set is a true classic. She is in prime form here, and the banter during and between songs is just excellent. I really love this show from June 28, 1970 at the CNE Stadium in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Lineage: Soundboard > ? > Traded fileset > DL > FLAC (level 8, align on sector boundaries)

Wow, this radio thing is kinda fun. Since I attended Mosswood Meltdown, July 2nd and 3rd, I decided to take last week off. Did you miss me? What do you mean no?

Taking a week off means that I have even more new music to share with you this week!

If you tune in regularly, then you know my show is all over the place. I play what moves me, hoping it moves you too. New music from Podium, Shannon Shaw, and Ty Segall. There's a lot that's new to you, including a Neil Young Archives release, "Toast" from 2001. I also had tickets to give away for an upcoming Bottom of the Hill show. I played music from the three acts performing that night.

Tune in regularly for your chance to win tickets to local shows.

The Radio Valencia studio is looking better each week: new paint job and soundproofing. And now we have our equipment in tip-top shape. But we still need you. This is an out-of-pocket venture. John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza - Monday 6-8PM Pacific - Hunx and His Punx & Bikini Kill (Mosswood Meltdown 2022)

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza

Monday's 6-8PM Pacific

Hot damn, this was a great weekend! I attended Mosswood Meltdown, July 2nd and 3rd at Mosswood Park in Oakland. This used to be Burger Boogaloo until the Burger boys were justifiably canceled. Two great days with 18 amazing bands including Flipper, Kim Gordon, Shannon Shaw, Pansy Division, The Dirt Bombs, The Linda Lindas and more! And I ran into so many great people. It was like coming home week!

I also brought along my own stereo recorder hoping to grab a few sets. I've been collecting shows for decades, but I can count the number of shows I've recorded on one hand, literally.

Tonight I have two great shows I am super excited to share with you.

First up from the amphitheater stage are Hunx and His Punx, featuring Hunx (Seth Bogart) and Shannon Shaw. What a riot! The comments between the songs really add to the mix. I didn't record this one but I have to say it sounds great and you can really feel the crowd.

I did however record the headliner tonight, Bikini Kill!!!! Oh wow, what a joy this set was. I can't get into the backstage drama, but I can tell you the set is A+++. And my recording of it really surprised the Hell right outta me! The between-song banter is really worth the price of admission as Kathleen Hannah was on a warpath. You are really going to love this.

Both sets are introduced by the one and only John Waters, who MCs these shows each year.

I know you're going to dig this!
