Being the resident non-holiday-celebrating host that I am, I figured I'd host a holiday show. Go figure. I'm no bah humbuger however. Oh no, far from it. I was married to two, count them TWO women who were both very much into the decorate-the-house-get-a-tree and all that jizzy jazz. And who did most of the decorating with glee? Me! Your own Hellacious Claus. 

And I have the collection of holiday music to go along with it. This is merely a tiny drop in the bucket of what I had to offer.

HUGE thanks goes out to the late great Mikl-em for providing much of what you heard tonight. What a fabulous human he was, and we're still at a great loss without him. FUCK CANCER!

So twinkle your lights and go drink something that'll make you merry. I'll take care of the next two hours for you.

Looking through my catalogue of shows I try to put together a night that Bill Graham would be proud of. Let's see if I can find two artists who would have really enjoyed playing on the same bill together. I think I hit the jackpot tonight!

First up I have a classic set by one of the hottest artists of his day: Ray Charles! This show from October 22, 1966 at the Palais Sport in Paris is one of my favorite shows of his. And the quality is really top notch, especially for the time. I'm surprised this was never officially released. I'll need to look into that.

Every song is a smash.

Our headliner tonight would be so humbled to be playing in the top spot, and it would not be false modesty. Amy Winehouse was never false. If anything she had imposter syndrome, which is bad enough. I really wish she found a way to get clean and healthy. My daughter, Little Lauson Hell really is quite obsessed with her, and I can understand why!

Check out this show from Glastonbury, June 22, 2007. She was on top of her game at this time in history. You'll note some fadeouts during this set. I had to get rid of the DJ chatter. This is a FM source.

There once was a time when my daughter looked at me like I was a hero. Now she's 13. Oh well, at least she allowed me to drag her kicking and screaming out of her lair (read: bedroom) to join me in the studio on this fine night. It only took me bribing her with a burrito to make this happen. There was a time when she couldn't wait to co-host a radio show with me. I guess we all grow up eventually, right? RIGHT?

To my credit, she did acknowledge all on her own, that it's pretty cool that she's had this opportunity to be on the radio with me over the years None of her other friends have ever done this before. So there!

Lauson's musical tastes have grown beyond my tastes, as I'm sure mine did when I was her age. If I recall 13 correctly, I was starting to purchase music on my own on a monthly basis; much of which my father hadn't ever listened to. So it comes as no surprise that she's delving deeper into her own interests. And it's those interests that I encouraged her to share on the show tonight.

Interestingly enough, not only is she into hiphop, but she loves Sinatra and Stevie Wonder, and is discovering more classic soul and funk based on the samples used in contemporary hiphop. We talk about this on the air. It reminds me of how I got deeper into blues, using 60s bands like the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton as a springboard to discover the originals, which I ended up enjoying more than the covers.

The banter is witty, the music is groovy. The talk about attending concerts, in the second hour, is classic! Much of the music is vocalist-centered as you can see by the playlist below. New music by Ty Segall and White Fence.

How do you spell love? I spell it H.E.L.L. but that's a good thing. And hot too! On my show tonight it was all about love. Just take a look below. Have you ever been in love? Romantic love where it's all hot and heavy and you can't keep your hands and genitals off one another? Where they're on your mind 24/7 and your just know this feeling is going to last forever? You know what I'm talking about, right? That feeling where there's just no one else on this big blue-green planet that can even understand how amazing your love is? Your love is larger than all the loves put together. And you both love the loving love that you love to loving give?

And then there's the practical love. The love that is supposed to continue to grow once the romantic love that was never ever going to fade because they love me more than anything ever, and they are constantly turned on by me, excited to hear about every little mundane moment of my mundane day as if I just survived 30 days in the Outback (not restaurant, but then again that too sounds like torture) and come back to tell the tale. The love that says "put the toilet seat down", but what they really mean is "I love you from the bottom of my heart, but if you leave that toilet seat up one more time, then you are not ever getting any more of this (at which point they're just pointing to their genitals)".

How many break-ups have your survived just to tell yourself that the next relationship is going to be the ONE?!?!? Have you begun to realize that it really is about the merging of two people who are totally turned on by the other for a finite amount of time, but given the chance may be able to evolve this deep friendship (please be best friends with this person, really) into a partnership that can survive the day-to-day "please put the dishes in the dishwasher" existence that requires you to set aside your ego.

And that's it really, we need to leave our ego at the door. And we need to be a HUGE cheerleader for our partner. That's what we want from them even if we don't say it out loud.

So love is HELL. It's hot, and it's cumbersome at times, and it's loud, and it's unruly, but out the other side can be something truly wonderful. Climb out of your fairytale and into the reality what love can really be. Oh, and listen to my show while having hot sex. Why not? Couldn't hurt.

Like my father says "it's always something". And isn't that the truth. Last Monday was MLK Day, and then we had that underwhelming inauguration on Friday. How was your week? How are we going to love and support one another? Do I have a responsibility to make my show more political, or do you just want music and interviews? I'm curious about your thoughts on this one.

As always a mixed bag of what I was into last week. The first hour is a tribute to MLK. I'm sticking with my commitment to play more from my live archive during the second hour. If anything good comes out of this new presidency I'm guessing it'll be the onslaught of great punk tunes.

For the new year I thought I would take a time out from new music and delve deep into my music library. I have to admit this was one of my favorite shows to host. Certainly my best of the year. HA! Every week my audience appears to grow. Thanks so much for the support, and please keep tuning in every Monday 8-10PM. Be sure to tell music lovers everywhere!

This year I want to focus on interviewing more bands, so if you're in a band or know someone who is, please contact me and let's make this thing happen. I also want to host a special on the history of West African Funk. There's so much beyond Fela that I really want to share with you. I also plan on bringing back an old favorite which dropped by the wayside: Bootleg Blast! This is where I share my latest live show that I've discovered. This will happen in the second hour so stick around. There's a tasty live treat in this broadcast, actually. Later in the year I'm hoping to also resurrect "Rock Fight", where I host a 4+ hour live bootleg battle. My buddy, and legendary sound engineer John Karr will try to best me. Let's see how far he gets. Look for this show sometime this summer.

Finally, it's time once again for my annual "Run for the Lilies" contest, where you dear listener send me the names of 10 famous people you believe will meet their demise by the end of this calendar year. We have made it once again through yet another glorious Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day! And what a day it was. How do you celebrate this day? I for one took time to meditate on the glory that is the message of Dr. King.
What a man.

And what a show I have for you tonight. (great segue, huh?) I start out with a tribute to the man. Some Nina Simone, followed by Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln. Try not to shed a tear, OK? I think it's shows like this one that really show my range as a DJ. You've got your indie, your punk, funk, international, rap. It's got pretty much everything that your commercial radio dreck would never dare approach.

I wish more people would lobby commercial radio stations and request music like you hear on this show. I do. Make that happen. Let me know how they respond. I can probably guess, but let's take a shot at it anyway.

Another rare night with no guests. I pulled a lot of tonight's music from the Radio Valencia library. I have a dream to have a library to rival any free form radio stations' library. We don't have enough space for that, but I can dream can't I? Most DJs bring their own music in, so it's not like we don't each have enough great things to share with you. But I did have a lot of fun pulling from what was a available.

I also rant on a bit about government intrusion and how the media plays us all for saps. It's obvious you don't have enough Slack.

Tonight was also the 40th anniversary of a classic Grateful Dead show. RFK Stadium, Washington DC, June 10th, 1973. I played a stellar Eyes of the World to close out the show.
