There comes a time in every DJ's life when they need to share what they know. Tonight was such a night. There have been many, actually. I welcome DJ Doug into the studio tonight for his first training session. The fella has already got the musical chops, now we need to get him radio-ready. He just threw down some platters that matter in the second hour, while I held down the announcing duties. Color me impressed. He'll be back on my next show to tell what he knows to you and the world.

There's a lot of new music to share with you these days. Isn't there always? You tune in for the newest in new sounds, and the sounds from way downtown. You can depend on Mr. Hell to play for you what you know you need, even if you didn't know you needed it. You can thank me later.

Is he or isn't he? Apparently he is. Dang. I saw Tom Petty three times in the late 80s and early 90s, including the very first Bridge School benefit in 1986, which is the only one I attended. I also was able to see him with Lenny Kravitz opening (the Let Love Rule tour). Petty always put on such a great show. I gave up going to shows in large venues many years ago, but I always felt that I seeing Petty again would be fun, regardless of the size of the venue.

There are few artists I would see in a large venue today. I would see Neil Young in a large venue if Crazy Horse was backing him. Other than that I prefer a venue ranging from a size 50-1500 people. The more intimate the better.

Speaking of an intimate setting, my bride took me to see Oh Sees (no more "Thee") last week at the Great American Music Hall. Not only was it a brilliant show, it was without a doubt, the loudest show I have ever been to. Even guitarist/lead singer John Dwyer was heard to ask if that show wasn't louder than the previous night's? I'm seeing them again in December at The Chapel. Get your tickets before they sell out.

Last night I was lucky enough to catch what has been marked as the "Last Polka" of the great SF punk-polka band, Polkacide, at Bottom of the Hill. After 30+ years they're hanging up their lederhosen. I spent a good 30 minutes in the polkapit. and boy did I feel it. The four original members are grandparent age now, and I'm guessing that having 10 people in the band makes it difficult to make the scene too often. I'm hoping for an annual reunion at the very least.

On a completely unrelated note, my bride Catherine gave birth to our little boy, Bodhi Miles Hell this past Thursday! We couldn't be more excited about this fella coming into our lives. I'll be taking a few weeks off from my show so I can be home with the little fella, fitting him with black t-shirts and guitar picks, and singing to him my favorite Melvis and Grateful Dead tunes. I can't wait to have him and Little Lauson Hell both in the studio with me in the years to come.

Well 2016 continues to be a shit show when it comes to amazing
entertainers who have influenced so many lives. This week we say goodbye to the great Gene Wilder, star of so many great movies from my childhood; and recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder, who was at the controls of thousands of legendary jazz recording sessions, that it's fair to say the his ear was as important as the musicians and the producer in creating some of the most memorable tunes from the 1950s up until just a few short months ago. Both we be missed, but luckily for all of us we have more than enough material to enjoy them for decades to come!

Are you aware that in 1974, Danny Sugerman, who managed both The Doors, and Iggy Pop, attempted to get Iggy to front a new Doors lineup? Iggy and Ray Manzarek did jam together a few times that year, and supposedly recorded a few tracks as well. You know what I'm on the hunt for! No true details of this come out in either Pop's nor Manzarek's books, but it is documented in a other places. How much was recorded, and who has these recordings, I hope to find out. Stay tuned, dear listener.

In the meantime, how about that show of mine Monday night, huh? You listened, right? RIGHT?!? I know you all have busy schedules, and by the time 8PM on a Monday night rolls around, who in their right mind wants to sit down and listen to a radio show, hosted by someone with over 25 years of non-commercial, free-form radio experience? Hmm, I don't know. How about people with good taste!

Tonight I spread the love and genres around quite a bit. Thanks for hanging in during the 20 minute Coltrane masterpiece! Now you too can tell your friends and neighbors that you listen to John Coltrane. Good for you.

I went to The Chapel on Sunday night to catch FUZZ and Mudhoney. If you tune in regularly, then you know these are two of my absolute favorite bands. AND THEY PLAYED TOGETHER!!!! Amazing show, from start to finish. Even the opener, Ex's With Benefits, was a delight! I recorded the Mudhoney encore, which featured Jello Biafra (I knew he would be there) singing a duet with Mark Arm. I play it in the second hour of the show.

I also continue with the "SET OF THE NIGHT". It's identified in the playlist.

We're getting close to November, which means a few crucial housekeeping pieces: 1) My "ANNUAL-ANNUAL" is coming up soon. This year it's 1975! 2) Members of Happy Fangs will be in to guest DJ with me (check out their new video for Hiya Kaw Kaw at the bottom of this post). 3) Local puck-rock malcontent, Marc Malakie will be in to talk about all-things-local-punk.

Here's a fine grab bag of joyful noise for your listening pleasure. Other than the amazing Coltrane track, it's all vinyl tonight. Oh, and the opener and the Shakti tracks are off of my iPod. Don't hold it against me. I really do prefer to play all vinyl, but I have so much music is various formats, that you really can't blame me if I slide a digital track in there from time to time.

Tonight's show is a good eclectic mix. Check out the video below regarding the John Coltrane track. I had no idea, but my respect for the master just increased exponentially. There's new music from Feral Ohms, Golden Void, Boris First Aid Kit, and Black Monolith. We've got rock, punk, garage, noise, jazz, and folk. How about that?

Am I meandering? I can't really tell. I haven't slept much in the past few nights, and I drove 450 miles in 8 hours on Sunday. Everything is a bit of a fog. If you see me on the street, go easy, OK? Thanks.

We have made it once again through yet another glorious Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day! And what a day it was. How do you celebrate this day? I for one took time to meditate on the glory that is the message of Dr. King.
What a man.

And what a show I have for you tonight. (great segue, huh?) I start out with a tribute to the man. Some Nina Simone, followed by Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln. Try not to shed a tear, OK? This Thursday night at The Chapel on Valencia is the triumphant return of Wooden Shjips. For any longtime listener to my show, you're no doubt aware of my love for this SF psychedelic quartet.
