No, not that. That couldn't have been all? Maybe it was.

Music moves me. And hosting a radio show allows me to take what moves me and shove it down your throat. And I mean that in the nicest way.

A friend tuned into the last half hour of this show and commented that my show is so eclectic with the Beatles, psych, punk and alt. 

They missed the other 15 genres I played!

For some really odd reason I was in the mood for some electronica tonight. I am NEVER in the mood for electronica. Our former DJ, Timmiii, had the best electronica show I have ever heard, and I knew I could never do it justice, so I just shied away from playing much on my show. Tonight something called me, so you'll hear an early Silver Apples, and Harald Grosskopf. The Osees bring their full new Can-style in their latest release. The Seastones track will help your plants grow.

Funk, Jazz, Neo-soul, Hip-Hop, Krautrock, and Dub round out most of the show. New music from Orcutt, Shelley, Miller blew me away. Go see them live. I also have new music from Kate Vargas and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.

Well hot damn that was a fun show to host. If you know me, then you know I don't much planning more than bringing a stack of vinyl that's calling my name, along with a ear worm or three I've had throughout the week. There's also that strong desire to play something that may be brand new to you.

You get all of the above for this show. I start out with some funk and soul, having just viewed that latest documentary about Sly Stone, brought to you by Questlove. Highly recommended. I get into some dub and jazz, before going the 60s strip/bachelor pad music. This takes us into some garage punk, and then we get even louder!

I travel two at least four continents on this show. I wasn't close to done when the two hour mark hit. Maybe you should tune in this coming Monday night to see what I have in store? What a fine idea. See you then.

From Robin's days in Birdsaw, through to LOOP! Station, Shake Well (er, ummm, that's actually a relative of hers I believe???), to inspired collaboration in Secret Songs, and now to a long overdue (IMHO) solo effort, due out this spring.

Mondays are fun days...for me. I was realizing I have been hosting a radio show Mondays 8pm since 2000, when I started at San Francisco Liberation Radio. SFLR's history is a rich one and I encourage you to check it out. In short, it was started by Food Not Bombs. They were upset that their arrests for feeding the homeless weren't getting enough media attention, so member Richard Edmondson started the station in his van. Eventually it ended up in his apartment in the Richmond District.

I was working at Trader Joe's in Daly City when I saw a shopper wearing a SFLR t-shirt. I had to inquire. They hipped me to the station, I made a call, and started there a few weeks later.

The rest, as they say, is history. And what a history it is, including the raid by the FCC using SFPD. We were a very politicized staff. And we were a pirate radio station, so it was only a matter of time before the Man came knocking. Or more like battering ramming, which they did.

We fought the good fight, and even set some precedent in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Because of our fight urban areas are allowed to file for low power FM (LPFM) licenses. Before our case against the feds, the FCC policy only allowed rural areas to file for a LPFM. Yay SFLR!

I left there after the raid, ended up at Pirate Cat, then FCCFree, and eventually built Radio Valencia, all hosting the Monday 8pm slot. Time flies.

As for this show, it's more of what you have come to expect: diverse, and leaning punk. But there's quite a bit more than that, including a couple sets from a new member of our staff: The Archivist, who will be on Sundays 8-10pm Pacific. Coincidentally, he used to be a student of mine many moons ago. He has excellent musical taste, which has nothing to do with me. 

There's a tribute to Wayne Kramer, who passed away last week, and a happy birthday to Bob Marley. 

Oh, one final comment about Mondays: the Giants have a winning record on Monday nights. True story.

I love having talented folks in the studio to interview. There's something about being able to ask those questions about their art that really gets me going. Monday night I was honored to have long time Bay Area guitarist, producer, engineer Myles Boisen drop in to talk about his latest project "No Accident", a mostly prepared piano collection. He was kind enough to bring a bunch of his other recordings, including solo efforts, and tracks produced with his former band, Splatter Trio. He's played on quite a few sessions over the years, including Tom Waits and David Lynch. We spoke about all of this and much more.

I neglected to ask him about his tunings! Dang. Just an excuse to have him on with me again!

I'm not a huge fan of tribute shows, but I guess that's my job, especially when we lose someone (or two) who made a big impact on the scene. Tonight we celebrate the lives of Lee "Scratch" Perry and Charlie Watts.

There would be no roots, no reggae, no dub, no Bob Marley if it were not for Lee "Scratch" Perry. True to form, he pushed the Jamaican music scene way beyond the limits, and took it international. Tonight we start the show with a performance from Perry and the Robotics, July 4, 1998 in Norway. This is a FM broadcast and a soundboard recording. Great stuff here.

The second hour features the band that would not be if it were not for Mr. Charlie Watts: The Rolling Stones. I loved reading Keith Richards' memoir for many reasons, not the least of which was his retelling of their desperate need to have Charlie Watts on the throne, and how expensive he was to hire. Also, the story of Watts telling Mick Jagger he wasn't his drummer, Jagger was Watts' singer, and then punching him in the face. HA! I'm one to believe the Stones stopped being relevant right after "Exile on Main Street" came out. My favorite era was 1971, so the show I have for you, March 13, 1971, from University of Leeds, is a must have! This is an excellent soundboard that should have been officially released...but it wasn't! So I have it for you. This show comes from "Get Yer Leeds Lungs Out" - label: Might Diamonds [MD 2004]

I add a couple of other treats to round out the show.

Janis Joplin passed 49 years ago last week, so I felt the need to bring out the goods: a classic live Ball and Chain from 68. This is a Big Mama Thornton cover, so I had to throw in some original Big Mama Mae, doing her dripping hot Hound Dog. Elvis never did it this good.

If there is something I detest, it's when I hear a disingenuous commercial DJ, who claims to just LOVE the new Foo Fighters. Really? You love the new Foo Fighters do you? Really? Really? No you don't. And if you do, then you either have absolutely no taste and no life, or so deeply consumed the Flavor Aid (yes it was Flavor Aid at Jonestown NOT Kool-Aid) that you cannot see the damage all those years under the corporate thumb has done to you. Get out while you still can.

I invited a top local commercial rock DJ to come on my show a few years back, under an assumed name, to play the music they would love to play during their day job but cannot. They turned me down, claiming that they have no need to because they just LOVE The Eagles! I think they were being honest. Poor bastard. 

Starting in 2007, I was lucky enough to recruit the late, great Michael "M-Dung" Slavko to join me on both FCCFreeRadio and then at Radio Valencia. He took me up on both, knowing that he would have a chance to take his professionally-honed radio chops and push it to the edge on a non-com. Dung is the number one reason I found myself hungry for a radio career. His morning show on KFOG (when that station had BALLS) was stuff of legend back in the 80s, pre-Stern and the vomit-laden Shock-Jock radio era. Dung Boy was much too classy for that crap. This year Dung was inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame. You are dearly missed, Dung Baby. B-DAYYYYYYYYYYY!!!

One more note about Dung, when I was 16 I got into Wolfgang's nightclub in North Beach, owned by the late rock promoter Bill Graham (his birth name was Wolfgang). Dung was hosting the weekly "Sunday Night Idiot Show" there on this particular night. He featured a Dung sound-a-like contest that evening, and I jumped at the chance to show him my Dung-ness. I didn't win, but he appeared to be pretty impressed with my impersonation, as well as my ability to get into a 21+ club at the tender age of 16.

I don't play The Eagles on my show.

I do feature a Velvet Underground set (two covers and Lou solo), newish Boss Hog and Qui, a harrowing tale from Spiderman, and more Bongwater than you can gurgle. Or is it gargle?

Ooh, I'm also gearing up for my 8th annual Annual Annual in November. Which year will I cover? Tune in and find out. I'm also considering a Ty Segall special. This guy releases something new every time I sneeze.

Anyway, this one is for all you classic rockers who need to go back to school.

Sometimes taking a few weeks off leaves me feeling a wee bit rusty. Not tonight! I came out of the shoot all guns blazing hot! Something for everyone in the first hour. Lots of dub in the second. I close out the show with a tasty 13 minute live Jimi Hendrix jam from New Years Eve 69/70 that you are sure to enjoy.

I spent a little while at Econo Jam Records in Oakland today. This was a first for me, but I can promise you it will not be my last. Living in San Francisco for most of my life got me used to the many fine vinyl establishments on that side of the bridge (I actually types "this side of the bridge", forgetting that I don't live in SF now): Amoeba, Stranded, 1234Go, Thrillhouse, just to name a few. But living in Berkeley has opened my eyes to more more MORE!!!!

We truly are living the dream, aren't we.

Hey, I hear WAND is playing this Thursday at Starline Social Club in Oakland. All ages. Make this happen.

Do we get to listen to music in the afterlife? I sure hope so, or it's going to be seriously boring. Or maybe when we die we can travel anywhere in time, so we can go see all those concerts that we were too young to attend when we were alive. That would be pretty awesome!

Who would you go see?

I'd see all the obvious 60s and 70s rock bands that I never got to see, but add to that Nina Simone, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Maybe Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams and Johny Thunders. Too many great artists to count, really.

Tonight's show wasn't about a lot of dead rock stars. No. There's lots of life in this here show you're about to listen to. Oh it's got its share of dead musicians, but don't let that get you down.

Tonight I'm training a new Radio Valencia DJ: Andre Champaign. Andre took over the first 30 minutes of my show, and it was a dub-lovers delight! Two sweet sets that'll get your toes a-tappin'. and your body swaying.

Andre also inspired my sets. Since my recent move I've been finding items in my library I had forgotten all about. I was told in my radio youth to never draw attention to a mistake; the listeners won't notice anyway. I took that to heart, but added never draw attention to a mistake UNLESS you can make it an artform! You can hear what I mean in my final mic break of the evening. HA!

I was hoping to do a 7" special soon called "The Return of the Magnificent 7", but in my recent move I lost a box of items, including ALL of my 7"s. I cannot begin to tell you how sore I am about this loss. I also lost a few DVDs and important books. Ugh. I hate the idea of having to rebuild my collection. But that's how it goes. As bad as I fee about this, I cannot define my identity by what I own. In the end, I still love music; it's my drug of choice. You can count on me to continue to curate two hours of aural bliss every Monday night.

I do still have a John Zorn special that I'm planning for this Fall. I'm still not certain how many hours and how many parts it will be. There is so much good music to choose from this grand composer/musician. So we have that to look forward to, which is good.
