Hell's Kitchen Radio #289: This Could Be The Last Time

Like my father says "it's always something". And isn't that the truth. Last Monday was MLK Day, and then we had that underwhelming inauguration on Friday. How was your week? How are we going to love and support one another? Do I have a responsibility to make my show more political, or do you just want music and interviews? I'm curious about your thoughts on this one.

As always a mixed bag of what I was into last week. The first hour is a tribute to MLK. I'm sticking with my commitment to play more from my live archive during the second hour. I always tack on the date and location for these tracks. New music from Charles Moothart (CFM), The Blind Shake, and Dead Ending (with a new anti-Trump tune).

If anything good comes out of this new presidency I'm guessing it'll be the onslaught of great punk tunes.

If you wish to contribute to my annual Run for the Lilies contest, you have until Sunday, January 29th to get me your list. Just email me the names of ten famous people you believe won't be alive by the end of this calendar year. The only rule: you may NOT participate in their demise. I'll announce the winner of the 2016 Run for the Lilies on Monday, January 30th.

Sometimes it's just fun to go through my library at home and blindly pull some music. That's what tonight was all about. I did play a few requests, and the obligatory amazing Grateful Dead track to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Full disclosure: I signed on for tickets to the Bay Area shows. Let's see how this pans out. I promised, at the beginning of the year, to write about my history listening to and seeing the Dead live. I'll get on that soon. There are some great stories in there.

This Saturday night I'll be spinning at St. Mary's Pub, 3845 Mission Street, in College Park (that's between Bernal Heights and the Excelsior Districts. You know, the neighborhood you never visit, but is totally AWESOME!!! I'll be spinning with the great Tophzilla! He and I used to DJ at the old Anon Salon parties in the 90s. Punk/Funk/Junk from 10-2AM. Come on down and have a pint.

By the way, this Saturday is RECORD STORE DAY!!!! Please make sure you head down to your local record store (yes, they do still exist), and check out all the unique offerings. I'll be over at Aquarius Records, in the Mission. There's no other place I would be.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen #199: Best of 2014

This here Best of 2014 show can be streamed right here.
Perhaps downloading the Best of 2014 is BEST for you.
You know, you can listen to all of my shows by going here.

How is it that another year has passed us by? I think there needs to be a study about time, and how it's relative to each individual as they age. Has this been done already? No? Someone really needs to get on this. We need a real Einstein to help us out. I have a theory that as we get older, time goes by faster, mostly because we have too many bills to pay. I could be wrong, but if I had no bills to pay, then time would really slow down.

But I digress.

2014 had a lot of great new music. The garage resurgence peaked my interest, as did the abundance of quality singer-songwriter material and metal in its many variations. I play a little of it all tonight in my BEST OF 2014 show!

Take a look at the playlist below, then get streaming...or downloading...or whatever it is you do to listen to my show.

A Season in Hell #197: Hell's Kitchen Premier

Are you smelling what Hell's cooking? Stream this show.
Download homemade stew of culinary delight, here.
Or perhaps you wish to listen to all of my shows? Good choice. Go HERE!

For the longest time I've been considering a name change for my show. I think my show has been called "A Season in Hell" for about 10 years. It's a good name. It's done me good. No complaints, but I just think it's played out. I've put a lot of thought into changing it. It needs to convey the myriad of sounds that emerge from my show every week. I always think of my show as something like a stew: lots of tastes, simmering together in the pot for two hours, waiting to be consumed by a hungry table, of impatient toddlers. So tonight, I unveil a rebirth of sorts, a show name which conveys the depth of the many tastes my show offers week after delicious week. I hope you enjoy it too.

I give you Hell's Kitchen, with John Hell

Eric McFadden joined me during the second hour in the studio. His fabulous lady, Super D was along for the ride. Eric will be playing at the Starry Plough in Berkeley this Saturday night, for his birthday. Come on down and rock out!

We talked about the true meaning of "TV Eye", and the many, many names for the Golden Triangle. There's lots of great new music, some classics, and some music that's new to you.

As always, enjoy.
