My mission in my radio life is to never insult you. Please let me know if you feel that I've done so. If so, you can fuck right off. HA! Just joking. I really love turning you on...to music. What were you thinking? Whatever it was, I like it. I really do. 

I wax poetic about all the evil of commercial radio all the damn time, but it appears that my vitriol has hit new heights! I' just sickened by what I hear on the FM when I'm driving along. I admit, I'm a button pusher, but I may scald my fingertip by how quickly I'm hitting that button. Once you move past 94.1FM (in the Bay Area) there just isn't anything interesting on the dial.

How sad is that?

Of course, I will continue to sing the praises of all things noncommercial. And why not? Music should always be purpose driven. I never mind playing older artists for you, but when I do, I like it to be something you would not normally hear on any other station. You be the judge.

I also really appreciate your feedback. I can only improve when my listeners chime in. Don't be shy. 

Lots of tasty treats in this episode. I went record shopping recently (SURPRISE!), and picked up a few Arhoolie Records releases. Check out the Big Mama Thornton track featuring the Muddy Waters Blues Band live in San Francisco in 1966. There's also the ridiculous piano playing of Dave Alexander. This guy is off the charts, good. Other than the Blues, there's 90s indie, 20's Psych, funk, punk, junk, hiphop, folk, and more more more!

I'm really feeling this new studio of ours. It's like I've grown wings! I'm giddy, I tell ya! GIDDY! Another diverse show, full of multiple genres that might just give you whiplash. But it's the kind of pain that you like. You like pain, right?

Joni Mitchell released "Blue" 50 years ago, so you know I have to celebrate the genius of Joni. There's new music from Mr. Bungle, and Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers. I also have a set focused on my new obsession, The Fall. Seriously, what took me so long?

There punk, blues, synth-cumbia, underground hip-hop, stoner metal, and The Beatles! This is why you tune in to Radio Valencia.

Speaking of Radio Valencia, if you live in or near San Francisco, we're looking for a few good show hosts.

Oh lordy, I brought a lot of music with me tonight. Then I got to the second hour and blew my wad on a 45 minute Grateful Dead jam. It's absolutely AMAZING!!!!

The show starts out with some hip-shaking groove, that I know will get your toes tapping, as well as the aforementioned hips-a-shaking. I've got some brand new music from LA garage/psych rockers, WAND, and a deep cut from the new Moon Duo release as well. FYI, Moon Duo features Ripley Johnson from Wooden Shjips. If you like them, then you're going to like Moon Duo. It's pretty much the same idea. They're playing at Bottom of the Hill on Wednesday, March 25th. Hey, that's tomorrow night!!! Go see this show. It also features Once and Future Band, and Carlton Melton. I suggest you ingest some happiness pills, and dance your ass off. You'll probably need to take Thursday off.

The Grateful Dead segment was from a show 41 years ago Monday at the Cow Palace in Daly City. Interestingly enough the Dead also played a show the following year, in 1975, in Golden Gate Park. Take a look at the jam I chose for you. They only played this sequence three other times. All four were performed between late 1973 and early 1974. And it is blissful. The false start on "Playin'" is enough to get your groove on.

So it's groove, garage and Grateful for your night in Hell's Kitchen. That's enough to satisfy even the choosiest mothers.

A Season in Hell #111: 1972, It Was A Very Good Year

It's all about 1972.

A year ago I did a 1971 show that kicked serious ass. Funny enough I forgot all about it until about a week ago, when I asked myself when that show was. Sure enough it was a year ago this week!

Similar to that show, this one is chock full of rock, progressive, pop, folk, funk and soul. Genres were so distinctive back then. You could hear the influences, but they didn't cross over, like many do today.

By 1972, it's obvious the 60's have been left far behind. Gone are the songs about rainbows and unicorns (except for that song about unicorns and rainbows, by YES). In are the songs about drivin' through the night in your Chevy, your baby by your side, as you're on the hunt for the Devil and the Pusherman.

Almost every track played in the show tonight was off vinyl records. Yes, records. Try not to think about the truly staggering amount of oil that it takes to make a record.

I was also happy to have a visit from KFJC DJ, Dominic Trix. He's a legend, having hosted some seriously fabulous shows at Wave of the West for over twenty years. He knows his music. You can hear us banter about in hour two.
