Sometimes things come in twos: peanut butter and jelly, baseball and hotdogs, cats and furballs. So it came as no surprise when I had panned to take the night off that I was lured into the studio when I read about Rolling Stone magazine's horrendous Top 100 Punk songs of all time list. 

As for the second treat, you may have read, or seen the flyer posted around San Francisco, looking for a Daniel Lurie look-a-like to star in a porn parody "Let's Blow San Francisco". I was lucky enough to land Don Francisco, the producer, director, writer for this soon to be classic film for an on air interview, talking about the film and where they're at right now in the process.

Daniel Haver, from the Mabuhay Gardens, was in the studio co-hosting with me again tonight. I've really enjoyed Daniel being around. He's really coming into his own on the air. And then Rob from the band The Seagulls came by along with his friend Heather. And to round out the crowd, Jasper, host of Saturday's Broadcast from Limbo added to the mix.

We all had something loud to say about this top 100. Upsetting and confusing was the common call. My theory is the editors for this list looked at regions of punk around the globe (US and Britain that is) and then considered the top acts and albums from those regions. Finally, they combined all of that into one list. 

Lame. All of it, lame. 

Nevermind #9! 

Most of these bands deserve to be on this list. Pretty much all of them shouldn't be in the order they're in (MC5 after Blink 182, who shouldn't be on this list at all!). And where's the first Stooges and VU albums? Where is DRI? MDC? Cromags???

So between the music, the banter, the talk about what makes San Francisco great, this turned into a better choice than to just stay home on a Monday night.

Well, isn't this special? It's not a special. There's a specialization in the ability to bring your something special. I was told once it takes 20 years to master anything truly special. That being said, this here is a special non-specialty specialized....er, um...show. 

Really.

I was really feeling it tonight. This was a show of segues and many genres. 

I'm sure you've heard by now that Radio Valencia is co-presenting a huge show, in association with SF Music Week on February 28th at the legendary venues Mabuhay Gardens and On Broadway in celebration of 50 years of punk in San Francisco. 

Come in the afternoon, starting at 2pm, to the Fab Mab, for a punk history presentation, followed by a panel featuring members of Flipper, Avengers and Crime, as well as V. Vale. I Hate Records will be selling records on site. The best pizza place in the country, Tony's Napoletana, is sponsoring and we'll have pizza available for those who show up early.

In the evening we're having a great show upstairs starting at 7:30, featuring Bitchfit, False Flag, The Freak Accident, Fang and Flipper. Members of Avengers and Dead Kennedys will be joining in the fun. Heaps Normal and Escape From New York Pizza are sponsoring.

So Ozzy died last week. Did anyone think he would live as long as he did? Not that I had a bet going, but I would have lost, had I. I turned onto Black Sabbath in my teens, back in the 80s, as would be appropriate. They were the darkest band I had ever heard up to that point, and probably still are since I don't listen to any Norwegian Death Metal.

I never saw Ozzy of Black Sabbath in concert. I can only imagine the energy of the crowd. I'm sure I had plenty of opportunities, but I didn't want to see his solo shows. Only Black Sabbath would do, and they didn't come around that often. There was that show in San Jose a few years back I could have tried to get to. What's up with that? I'm quick to buy tickets to a good show. I guess I'll just have to enjoy the bootlegs, of which I have many. 

Speaking of Ozzy and Black Sabbath, Tuesday night I'm playing what has to be my all time favorite Black Sabbath show on my Live Bootleg Bonanza on Radio Valencia, starting at 8pm Pacific. August 06, 1975 from Asbury Park, New Jersey is Sabbath firing on all cylinders. What an incredible show! Tune in.

For tonight's show I pay tribute to Ozzy in the second hour, though I do give you a tease of the awesomeness of the live show right out of the block. The second hour is a lot of great Black Sabbath covers you may have never heard.

For the first hour it's a lot of drunken garage rock. I was at the Rock and Roll Flea Market at Faction Brewing on Saturday and I bought a lot of 7"s as well as the Estrus Records book, which inspired the first hour. 

I'm certain the rock tributes will continue considering the number of rockers who are 75+ years of age, and did plenty of excessive partying in their day. Who is on your bingo card?

Well hot damn that was a fun show to host. If you know me, then you know I don't much planning more than bringing a stack of vinyl that's calling my name, along with a ear worm or three I've had throughout the week. There's also that strong desire to play something that may be brand new to you.

You get all of the above for this show. I start out with some funk and soul, having just viewed that latest documentary about Sly Stone, brought to you by Questlove. Highly recommended. I get into some dub and jazz, before going the 60s strip/bachelor pad music. This takes us into some garage punk, and then we get even louder!

I travel two at least four continents on this show. I wasn't close to done when the two hour mark hit. Maybe you should tune in this coming Monday night to see what I have in store? What a fine idea. See you then.

Hot damn, it was cold in the Radio Valencia studio on Monday night. It took a real hot set of music to turn up the heat. I often walk the line of telling it like it is and just getting the heck off the mic so you can enjoy the music. I even have a music bed, performed by the magnificent singer/songwriter Adam MacKintosh, that keeps me honest at about three minutes in length. There's a method to my madness. I need more than three minutes to tell it like it is. 

Each week I go through my record collection searching for whatever is tickling my fancy this week. I'm also listening to a lot of radio (Radio Valencia, KFJC, KALX, KEXP, WFMU, and others as I commute daily). There are so many great DJs turning me on to new music. 

If you're thinking of what to get your loved ones for a gift, I strongly encourage music. No albums in the house? Buy a turntable! Only listening via an app? Get the Bandcamp app and support the artists directly. But let's all agree that cassettes were wrong the first time around (other than mix tapes) and should never make a comeback. This coming from the guy who worked the cassette room at Tower Records, and owned thousands of bootleg tapes. There is nothing redeemable about cassettes. Though there is something to be said about buying an off-brand best of southern rock cassette while on a road trip. 

I do have a few boxes of my airchecks from my many years at KFJC. Those have to be incredibly embarrassing to listen to. There was a show I hosted in 1991 (one of my early graveyard shifts when I was the Reverend Dah Wave), when I was taking call in confessions (I didn't know it was a priest that took confessions, so there ya go). We didn't have a delay at KFJC, so I took a real risk that the callers weren't going to swear. Luckily no one did. And many of the callers were my friends, up late and very imbibed. The great Oz, the Watermonk of Dah (aka Noa Oz Appleton) was in the studio with me. We took a few very hilarious calls. 

Unbeknownst to me, my program director was listening in too. I got a stern talking to (understatement of 1991) and was lucky to keep my shift. I listened back to that aircheck a few years later. It was so cringey that I took the tape out of my car stereo and threw it in the back seat. I wonder where that thing is??? Do I dare listen back? Should I digitize it? Should I share it on Radio Valencia?!?!?!??!

As for this show, I'm as cringey as ever, but I own that now.

All vinyl. Nothing new. Many genres. All worth your time.

I'll be hosting an alternative XMas show on Monday, December 23rd. Tune in and enjoy the hot cocoa on me. Maybe that'll heat up the studio this time around.

What team are you on: play only the most subversive sounds that may draw in listeners hungry for something new and challenging, but may push some away? Or are you in the camp of play a lot more accessible sounds so as not to push too many listeners away?

I struggle with this, week-to-week, as I'm putting my shows together. I really want to turn you on to music you've never heard, that is knocking me out, but I also know that if I play too much subversive sounds, I may only end up with my mother listening. She really digs that Throbbing Gristle (HA!).

Really though, if you had your choice, which kind of radio show are you more likely to stick around for and tune into each week.

I aim to please, which still pushing your comfort zone.

That was not meant as a euphemism, but you know...

Never draw attention to the mistakes. 

That's really good advice. Don't let them see what's behind the curtain, and all that jazz. 

Unless you can make it an art form. 

I like to think I have made it some kind of art form, and not just roommate radio.

I don't often bring CDs into the studio; it's almost exclusively vinyl for this dude. But tonight I wanted to play a few tunes to celebrate Bunny Day and St. Stupid's Day, so I brought a few CDs along just to find out the CD player was not in operating condition. And I didn't bring nearly enough vinyl to fill two hours. I did have my trusty 5GB external hard drive filled to the brim with tasty musical treats, but I hadn't prepared to pull anything from there, so there was more improvisation on this night than I am used to.

You can probably hear it in my delivery.

And I had a friend in the studio I forgot was coming by, and I like to play the good host, all the while troubleshooting the CD players, which I was unable to do.

Taking a look at the playlist looks pretty satisfying though. I may sound a little cringe on the mic. Let me know. I can take it. My dad always told me it's healthy to embarrass yourself from time to time: it builds character. If that's the case, John Hell was certainly representing tonight!

Monday night was all about pulling a fast one. I started out with some Bay Area punk, leading into a Pinkus-related set that was unintentional, but I really pulled it off. 

With the closing of Mutiny radio, we're bringing on a few new shows. I was happy to have Sean and the Archivist in the studio with me. Sean took on a set of his own (I marked those tunes with a "S"). I spoke to them both about their time at Mutiny and what we're to expect once they join the Radio Valencia family. 

I was once a part of the Pirate Cat community, and I even was instrumental in building their studio on 21st and Florida. I left that station (most do once Monkey gets tired of you), and eventually started Radio Valencia. Monkey left Pirate Cat and comedian Pam Benjamin took over, calling it Mutiny Radio. I prefer to think of other stations as part of the great community network of stations, so it's sad to see them go. I understand you can still hear the live stand up shows Pam is hosting on their site.

In the meantime, let's welcome these new shows. I could not be more excited for the programming happening at Radio Valencia in 2024.

And that's no joke.

It sure enough felt GOOD to be back in the studio Monday night. I haven't taken this much time off since I started Radio Valencia in 2010. This was my first show since early April. I needed the break, but I was itching to get back. There was a moment Monday afternoon, a few hours before my show, when I thought "I could stay in and watch a show". That's when I knew I just had to make it in to do my show. 

The longer you sit, the harder it is to get up. 

Get up.

Always get up.

So where have I been? That's a difficult question to answer, and not one I'm quite ready to jump into quite yet. My health is great! It has nothing to do with that. My kids are healthy as well. My life is in flux, but I can honestly say I am the happiest and most at peace in quite a long time. As a matter of fact last Friday afternoon I was on the beach near Albany Bulb (yes, there's a great little beach there and the water was warm that day), staring out at the city and the Golden Gate Bridge, playing in the warm water with Bodhi, noting that I was the happier at that moment than I have been in many years. 

I'm not often unhappy. I just have been lacking a measure of harmony and peace. Today I have more harmony and peace. And for this I am grateful.

Now, on with the show!

I wasn't certain how rusty I was going to be, but after having hosted a few thousand shows over the years, I figured as long as I had enough music with me, I could figure out the rest. 

How right I was!

I've missed a few tributes over the past few months, so I had to make up for that. Harry Belafonte, Blackie Onassis and Tom Verlaine passed over the past few months. Instead of sets for the dearly departed, you get a single tune for each.

I'm starting off with some jazz and folk blues, before getting louder. And I do get louder. New music from Death Valley Girls,  Iggy Pop, Mudhoney, Cory Hanson (of WAND), and King Gizzard pepper the broadcast.

I expect to be hosting my show live every other Monday night for a while. You'll hear an encore presentation (read: rerun) on the Monday's I'm not in. Having hosted over 500 shows on Radio Valencia your sure to enjoy what I have served up for you.

Let's face it, Punk ended in 1978 with the dissolution of the Sex Pistols. It's not that there weren't amazing bands that stuck it out after that, and bands who didn't come around after that, who were seriously influenced by the Sex Pistols. It's just that the original Punk nihilism died in 1978 when the band called it quits.

As much as I love The Clash (and I really do love them grandly), no one could hold a candle to who the Sex Pistols were and what they stood for. The irony of nihilism, and pissing people off just for the sake of doing so just wasn't the same once Johnny quit the band. And there was no way Steve Jones and Paul Cook were going to continue on with Sid Vicious, even with Ronnie Briggs singing. 

I've just completed reading "England's Dreaming", by Jon Savage. What a brilliant look at such an important moment in social, political and musical history. I strongly suggest you read both this book and "Please Kill Me", by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain. You might want to throw in Dee Dee Ramone's autobiography. 

This all inspired my show tonight. First up are one of my desert island bands: Mudhoney. I love them, deeply. This show must have been a blast to attend. Recorded April 19, 1992 in Dusseldorf, Germany at the Noise Now Festival. The band was drunk. They make fun of Peter Murphy (who hasn't?). Everyone had fun. This was during their tour for their first major label release "Piece of Cake" on Reprise Records; a record I really enjoyed, although it was a bit overproduced compared to their Sub Pop days. I'm pleased they released the demos from this record a few years back on "Pezado de Pastel".

Superfuzz Bigmuff made a huge impact on me when I first heard it in 1989. Really major. This is a band that kicked my ass, and I still pull them out often. When all my friends were getting into the Grunge bands of the 90s, I asked them point blank who would be remembered in 20 years (now 30+). And I told them Mudhoney will be remembered and respected more than most. They scoffed. We don't talk much these days.

Our headliners tonight are the one and only Sex Pistols. This is from the legendary "let's get out of the country and see if we can tackle America" opening show of the American tour, January 5, 1978 in Atlanta, Georgia. It's hilarious that Malcom McLaren purposely kept the band away from the major cities (except San Francisco for their final show of the tour and their final show as a band), and instead sent them to towns in the deep south purposely to confront an aggressive audience who were skeptical of Punk and British Punk rockers in particular. 

There''s three songs tacked on at the end from December 11, 1977 in Maasbree, Scotland as filler.

No guests, new music, you, me, these turntables, this microphone. Tonight I was feeling a bit peckish and chose a variety that has moved me lately. New releases from Kikagaku Moyo, Mavis Staples and Levon Helm, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.

I just want to let the music do the talking here. It was also the 50th anniversary of what I consider to be one of the top five all-time great Grateful Dead shows: August 27, 1972. There is a lot I can say about this amazing show, but I think you should just go listen the very well produced Deadcast and let Jesse Jarnow tell you all about it. I shared the 18 minute "Playin' in the Band". 

I was going to follow up the epic Dead jam with a new 18 minute King Gizzard track, but I was running out of time. Dang. I would have done it too. And the story of the new KGLW track "The Dripping Tap" is really one to read about. I look forward to sharing the track with you soon.
