Hell's Kitchen Radio #556: Best of 2024

Listen to this show right here!!!

Subscribe to my show, via Subscribe via iTunes

Well, January arrived, so I figure I better pull out what I bought last year and give all a spin.

King Gizzard released its 26th album in 2024. And what an amazing show they put on at The Frost. Dale Crover came back from neck surgery to record and tour with Redd Kross, put out his third solo album and 27th with the Melvins. I can't wait to see them in April and again coming up in June. I love me some Melvins!

Nick Cave seems to be emerging from his deep grief-stricken period with Wild God. I'll be seeing him in May. Great albums from Billy Strings, WAND, Ty Segall, OSEES, GOAT (so many bands using allcaps?!?!?!), Shannon and the Clams, and more!

Monday night I'll be back with new music and music that's new to you.

Tune into the station you have come to rely on to play the best of whatever genre you're into.

And while you're listening we could really use your support. We have been around since 2010 and keeping our equipment operating, along with increased costs for just about everything, makes it a challenge to keep paying for this out of our pockets.

This is why we decided to have an "on air" fundraiser, through February 8th. Head over to Radio Valencia's website, scroll down and click the PayPal link on the right to show us a little love. This is a tax deductible donation, and every dollar goes straight to paying to keep our radio home running.

Thanks in advance.

Enjoy and please share the Best of 2024.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #545: INDECLINE and BLF

Some interviews are just that much more special. Monday night was twice as nice. I was honored to have Jack Napier from the Billboard Liberation Front in house to talk about his history of "improving" billboards, laughing all the while. Jack was also kind enough to bring along a representative from the artist activist collective INDECLINE, who are currently celebrating their 24th year of upsetting the status quo. You may recall their life sized statues of a nude Donald Trump that were placed around the country in the lead up to the 2016 election. Yeah, that INDECLINE.

The conversation went from the history of this clandestine cabal, to how they recruit members, skirt thelaw (they don't always), find inspiration, explore the difference between art and graffiti, and what's coming up next. Even our old friend Jack is coming out of retirement; he's been so inspired.

INDECLINE in San Francisco this week for a few nights in celebration of their art.

You can catch them at The Roxie on Wednesday, October 9th, starting at 6pm, where there will be a double feature of their films "The Art of Protest" and "Side Hustles". A Q&A will follow, featuring members of INDECLINE, Jack Napier, Winston Smith, and moderator Broke-Ass Stuart.

Thursday INDECLINE will be celebrating the release of their new book "Control Alter Delete" at City Lights Bookstore in North Beach at 6pm. Jack Napier will also be in attendance.
This event will be followed at 7:30 pm by an art installation at Studio Fall Out, 50-A Bannam Place, San Francisco.

Friday and Saturday there is more INDECLINE at Studio Fall Out.
First, on Friday night there is a "Control Alter Delete" film screening, that features behind-the-scenes footage of billboard liberation adventures from 2000-2024. This runs from 7-9pm.

And finally on Saturday night INDECLINE, in collaboration with Studio Fallout presents: “Liberation Vinyl” an intimate creative workshop giving guests the unique chance to create and take home their own custom art on liberated billboard vinyl. THERE ARE TICKETS NEEDED FOR THIS EVENT.

There is a lot of subversive and silly fun to be had this week in San Francisco. Go out and make your mark.

Thanks to Chick and Winston Smith for improving my show image at the top. I'm honored.

See you at the show.

Enjoy and please share.

I've got a fun time set up for you! All you need is two hours, a comfy blanket, food, toys, enhancements, trash talk, crippling depression, a jones for talking dirty and retribution, along with a lifetime supply of Q-Tip brand q-tips, lavender oil, rechargeable AAA batteries, snakeskin from a Burmese Python, slightly used cat toys, a roll of quarters, and an unwatered plant of your choosing.

Now, gather all of this, sort it by age, weight, height, and ability to bring you happiness. Make sure you put your phone on do-not-disturb, (as you will not want to be disturbed).

In the event of a flash flood, earthquake, twister, tsunami, tax audit, intervention, or chem trails, you will want to note your evacuation routine.

This show is not for the faint at heart.

Enjoy and please share.

No guests. No training. Just you and me and a whole hell of a lotta music. Musically speaking this may be my best show of the year so far. There are some inspired sets I think you're gonna love. And these are some of my longest sets too!

In my early radio days at KFJC we had to follow the clock and break at :10, :20, :40, and :50, as well as play a legal ID at top of the hour. Each break we had business to attend to: announcing other shows , public service announcements, ticket giveaways, and other bits and bobs. This gave us a 20 minute sweep at the bottom of the hour, and one at the top (except for that pesky legal ID).

I've kept to that clock pretty much throughout the years. I like the idea of stopping often enough for you to know who I played, while also having a few longer sets where I can stretch out some. I often get a bit more dissonant during these sweeps.

I wasn't strict with the clock tonight.

I also went shopping at Stranded Records on Sunday. New music from Goat, Melvins (best album since the Big Business days IMHO), and Meatbodies. Lots of music to drop your panties to. A brief tribute to Steve Albini (more to come on that loss). And so much more. Take a look at the playlist below. Click the link above to listen in.

Enjoy and please share.

It would appear I went a bit long and neglected my responsibility of posting my show. Sorry about that folks. I had a new Radio Valencia DJ in the studio for the night, training for his new show. You can check out The Final Step with Izzy Tuesdays 10-midnight. Nice guy. I'm looking forward to his show.

We have a lot of really great shows on Radio Valencia. And I'm nit just saying that. When I started this station I had a vision of a freeform station that allowed DJs to not only share the music they love, but to also continue to explore music of many genres, ready and excited to play what they find on their show, just for you.

That's what still excites me about hosting a radio show after all these years.

So, even though I was distracted training our new host, I made certain to have some great music ready for you over two hours. New music from the Murlocks, Melvins with Helms Alee covering some early Scorpions, new Meatbodies, Population II from Montreal, Slift, Kim Gordon, and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets whom I'm seeing in San Francisco next week!

There's also some rare San Francisco punk with pre-Flipper band Negative Trend, as well as some SF funk/punk with Dread Zeppelin, and many other treats sprinkled about.

Enjoy and please share.

I have a hankerin' for a 7 inch special, so here ya go! This may be my third such special in the past decade or so. I can't be expected to remember all of this, thank you very much. HA!

The original idea of the 7 inch single, going back to the 1950s had to do with record labels not thinking the 33 1/3 long playing record was worth investing in. The labels commodified the music industry early and knew they were more likely to turn a profit if they could identify one song to sell to a public hungry for entertainment.

By the 1970s the idea of a single had changed. The A-side was always about the "hit" and the B-side was often something special that wasn't going to appear on the full record. They Beatles always put out 12 song records on Parlophone along with a two-song single that didn't appear on the LP.

For the world of the independent artist the single may be the only music they released. A lot of the songs I play tonight haven't appeared in any other format.

There are a lot of gems here, so take a listen and please share with music fans in your life.

Enjoy.

Wow, this radio thing is kinda fun. Since I attended Mosswood Meltdown, July 2nd and 3rd, I decided to take last week off. Did you miss me? What do you mean no?

Taking a week off means that I have even more new music to share with you this week!

If you tune in regularly, then you know my show is all over the place. I play what moves me, hoping it moves you too. New music from Podium, Shannon Shaw, and Ty Segall. There's a lot that's new to you, including a Neil Young Archives release, "Toast" from 2001. I also had tickets to give away for an upcoming Bottom of the Hill show. I played music from the three acts performing that night.

Tune in regularly for your chance to win tickets to local shows.

The Radio Valencia studio is looking better each week: new paint job and soundproofing. And now we have our equipment in tip-top shape. But we still need you. This is an out-of-pocket venture. Bringing you great programming is our mission, and we can really use your help. Please consider donating to Radio Valencia by going to our PayPal (we are financially sponsored by SF IndieFest) and throwing a few bones our way. Every dime is spent on station needs (rent and equipment mostly). I thank you in advance.

Now, go check out the playlist below, click on the link above and enjoy the show.

Following that live Black Sabbath from 1970 I played during my Live Bootleg Bonanza, I just had to keep the feeling moving. This show is mostly loud and in your gut, with a couple of tunes in there to let you catch your breath.

Check out new music from The Bobby Lees ( I love this band), Ty Segall (you already know how I feel about him), Iggy Pop (the greatest love of all), Kikagaku Moyo (they're coming back to the Bay!!!), and Le Butcherettes (when will Teri Genderbender return???).

I feel you feelin' me, so we've got that goin' on, which is good.

In the meantime, sit back relax, open your mind, and get ready to be punched in the earholes the way you like it.

Tune in each Monday, 8-10PM PDST. I always have tickets to give away to a local show. You really need to get out more often.

Enjoy and please share.

Well this is embarrassing. I should have shared this with you days ago. What was I thinking? What have I been doing all this time? Oh right, I have kids, and a wife. And it was my birthday this past week, so there was that. And I have a job.

I just can't please 'em all.

And this was a really good show; possibly the best since I returned live in the studio this past summer. New music from Ty Segall, Shannon and the Clams, King Gizzard and John Dwyer. There's also a tribute to sax man, Pee Wee Ellis. I saw some live music last weekend and went digging online for the opening bands. I open with tunes from both, Buzzed Lightbeer and Coffin. Check them out when they come to your town.

Support live, local music.

Enjoy.

Another Monday, another chance for me to share some great music with you all. I started in radio in the Fall of 1988, when I was at the College of San Mateo and took radio classes, so I could be at KCSM, Jazz-91 on the campus. I was also working at Tower Records in San Mateo at the time. One of my colleagues was a DJ near the South Bay at 89.7FM KFJC, located at Foothill Junior College, just south of Stanford. When she heard I was at KCSM, she told me I should come down to KFJC and check it out. I was floored; I thought of KFJC as an exclusive station, with the cream of the crop of subversive DJs, always pushing the limits of what was "acceptable" radio. I first showed up there in late Fall 1988, and stuck around until 1997.

KFJC taught me that I had a responsibility to push the limits. Where else are you going to be turned onto music that will captivate and elevate you to a higher consciousness? Indeed.

So tonight you're going to get what I always give you: good musical medicine. Tribute to Lee "Scratch" Perry; new Ty Segall and Meatbodies; krautrock from Embryo; kraut-influenced from MV and EE; birthday wishes to Roger Waters and much much more,

I've been doing this radio thing for over 30 years now, but it still feels fresh every week. I love finding new music, or music that's new to me, so I can share it all with you. I hope you enjoy this recent presentation.

Enjoy.

Well here I am, week four of this shelter-at-home, and I'm finding I'm not that bored. I just want to go record shopping in a record store. Oh don't get me wrong, I have plenty of music to keep my going, and I have purchased a few LPs online, and ever took sweet advantage of the recent Ripple Records download deal. WOW! But there is nothing like walking into my favorite record stores, thumbing through the new arrivals, chatting with the clerks about what they are enjoying, searching the 7" sections, checking out my very long want list, and looking to see if is hidden in the stacks.

I love how stores are willing to order for me, but part of the fun for me is to see if a record like Money Chicha has shown up, just so I can get that deep feeling of satisfaction for finally landing that long sought after LP.

There's a ritual to the whole process of record buying. I think only crate-diggers really know what I'm talking about. I used to be a club DJ in San Francisco, and I used to shop for 12"s weekly. Damn, I had a lot. It actually felt pretty good to unload those about a decade ago when I started up Radio Valencia.

Speaking of Radio Valencia, we have a new home. The lease is about to be signed, and since we're in a shelter-at-home and cannot move in yet, our new landlord is willing to hold off on rent until we actually move in. Thanks landlord, you rock! And we cannot wait to rock very soon in our new digs. Details are coming once everything is secure. But after ten years and our fourth home, I can promise you when I say this is going to be the absolute BEST home for Radio Valencia. I hope we're here for years to come. And you can even come hang out there with us!!!

As for this recent show you are about to enjoy, it's a deeper dive into my digital library. It's large, but I miss playing my vinyl for you. There are a few live treats in there, and even some brand spanking new Ty Segall. He covers Harry Nillson on a new EP.

I may try to host a show between my Monday night show, featuring my live library. I have over 4000 live shows from over 500 bands of many genres. And with all this sitting around the house, I'm downloading multiple shows a day. As of this writing I have a PIL show from 1982 and a Germs shows from 1978 downloading. And I have over 1000 Grateful Dead shows too. Maybe I should log into a separate slot just to play live Dead?

Hmmmmmmmm.....

That's enough for now. Time to enjoy two hours of Hell's Kitchen Radio.

Enjoy.

Some nights I just need to ROCK! And since we have no constraints on what we can or cannot play here at Radio Valencia, I felt obliged to feed my urge. Join me, will you?

WARNING: There is one, I repeat, one polka song. Then again it's by Polkacide, so I'm forgiven. If you have never witnessed Polkacide live I feel sorry for you. There a band that MUST be seen live to really understand the attraction. Their "final show" (of which I've seen more than my fair share) was just days after my son was born, October 8th, 2017. I look forward to their next final show, as I'm confident it will polka hard. Join my in the polka pit and you'll see what I mean.

Take a look at the playlist below and prepare for a quality neck ache, ala head banging for two sweet hours.

Enjoy.
