I found that I was drawn to jazz and soulful international music this past week. Someone recently asked me how I prepare for my shows. I've written about this before, but I think it bares repeating. I don't host a specialty show, or genre-specific show, so I play whatever feels good, week to week. It's true, I often default towards the punk or garage, but even that's more rare than one would think. I'm a huge Deadhead (more of a Dead fReAk) but you're not going to hear them too often on here, and I think that's because they're such a heavy in my everyday life, that I use this show to focus on the other music that turns me on.

And there's a lot that turns me on.

I also like to keep you guessing. I was driving home after my show listening to KALX, and the DJ was playing an excellent thrash punk track, and followed it up with something that was neo-classical. I swear I almost pulled over to call and thank him. I applauded in the car, while driving. True story.

I feel that it's the responsibility of DJs at independent stations (Radio Valencia, KFJC, KALX, WFMU, KEXP, etc) to push the limits of what we have become comfortable with; not just what the listener is used to hearing. I take pride in a lot of what I share with you. 

I do have my guilty pleasures, however. Even in this show I played a few tracks that I've shared over the years. It felt right at the time. And I will probably do it again. 

But now I'm inspired to keep taking the risks that I should. Next week prepare for thrash metal to be followed by folk, followed by electronica. I can do that. You can't stop me.

Speaking of next week, it's my 600th show at Radio Valencia!!! I think I want to have a party. Wanna come? You need to bring snacks.

What team are you on: play only the most subversive sounds that may draw in listeners hungry for something new and challenging, but may push some away? Or are you in the camp of play a lot more accessible sounds so as not to push too many listeners away?

I struggle with this, week-to-week, as I'm putting my shows together. I really want to turn you on to music you've never heard, that is knocking me out, but I also know that if I play too much subversive sounds, I may only end up with my mother listening. She really digs that Throbbing Gristle (HA!).

Really though, if you had your choice, which kind of radio show are you more likely to stick around for and tune into each week.

I aim to please, which still pushing your comfort zone.

That was not meant as a euphemism, but you know...

I think my dad was the coolest cat on the block. Of course, for those of us who were lucky to have good fathers in our lives, who didn't think of their dad as the coolest? He was a working man; a watchmaker, and a small business owner. He was a high school dropout, who grew up in the working class neighborhood on the east side of Toledo, Ohio in the 40s, 50s and 60s. He spent much of his teenage years and early 20s rolling up through Ann Arbor and Detroit to race cars and see great live music. 

When he wasn't working at his own father's store, he was under the hood of some mid-century classic automobile; usually a Chevy. He would buy cars, fix them up and sell them for a few extra bucks. Every so often he would get himself and my mom a real fun car for them to enjoy (OK, mostly for my dad to enjoy): a 1966 GTO, 1970 429 Super Cobra Jet in a Gran Torino body. And four Corvettes ('64, '66, '66, and '68). I was alive for the '66 and '68. I even took the '66 out for a spin when I was in my late teens. He checked the odometer and busted me for it, but not so bad that he didn't let me drive it with him next to me.

It was the music he turned me onto that has helped turn me into the music-lover I am today. He would always have Jazz and 60s Blues and R&B playing in the garage while I was growing up. The sounds coming from the small speaker were so foreign to my ear, but I was really drawn to them. I'm certain he was never into music like I am, but he always had a great ear for more than just pop. Music was never just in the background for him. He has a discerning ear. Music has always brought him joy. It's taken him to a higher place. I learned at a young age to take music listening seriously; there is always something to learn.

We went to record stores together, and I really love that he would take chances on artists he had never heard, based on the name of the band, or even the look of the record cover. Ha! 

Though I wouldn't say Jazz was Harvey's go-to genre, it was my own love of Jazz that I thank him for. I learned to enjoy the composition and rush it because of him. To take it in. 

Tonight I have a really great show from the one and only Dizzy Gillespie to share with you from Studio 104, Maison de la Radio, Paris, France, March 15, 1970. This FM broadcast features Dizzy at the prime of his performing years. It also features George Davis (guitar), Mike Longo (piano), Red Mitchell (double bass) and David Lee (drums). Sit back and enjoy this show.

If this show had legs it would have found a few dozen dance moves to throw down. It doesn't have this ability, but don't let that stop you from getting down. Black History Month or not, every one of these artists deserves every award they have won, and many more they hadn't. 

You have no excuse but to strap in for a real good time.

And do not even get me started about the bullshit that is out there, coming from racist white assholes about the need for a White History Month. EVERY MONTH IS WHITE HISTORY MONTH!!!! For Christ's sake, the entire history of our nation has been written by white people. Blacks get the shortest month of the year. February was chosen because of the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. I get it, I get it. But until we make serious amends with our original sin, this country will never heal. I'm a proponent of paying reparations to Blacks who can show they are direct decedents of slaves. I also believe we need to do the same to Indigenous Americans. Hitler and the Nazi's learned how to control their population based on our treatment of native tribes and Jim Crow laws, post Civil War. 

We have a lot of work to do.

The second hour has a Bob Marley birthday set. He would have celebrated 76 years last week. Any excuse to play more Bob Marley.

In the meantime, enjoy these two hours. Many genres, all great music.

It's another one of those nights where I just have to do a deeper dive into my cast library of music. There's something old, something new, something ripped off, something I don't think I've ever actually listened to before.

That's fair, isn't it?

Should a DJ give a listen to EVERYTHING before they play it for you? How much preparation do you require from your DJ? How OCD are you, anyway?

I used to know a DJ at a former station I was at who would spend hours writing out his playlist. We hosted four-hour shows at this particular station. I would watch him work meticulously on his playlist. Draft after draft. He would write down songs/artists, and then scratch some out and and fill it in with another. I would tune in from time to time and could really appreciate the effort, but it also felt a little stiff. Maybe it was his mic breaks, but it never felt that authentic to me.

More often than not I'm inspired by the events leading up to my show, and I pull my music a few hours beforehand based on this. I enjoy playing new music more often than not, but I also love peppering some older "library" tracks in for good measure. Some shows, like the one from two weeks ago, take on a life of their own, and I get inspired during the show itself. Thank goodness I bring along my trusty external HD with 100GB of music.

One thing you didn't witness during the show was the conflict I was having with the turntables. That was fun. for whatever reason I just could not get the turntable mixer to play through the main board. By the third set I had it all dialed in and the show really took off from there. I think it's those little issues that really keep me on my toes and have me pulling some righteous tunes out of my proverbial hat. I'd like to take this time to thank my 5th generation iPod from 2008 for all its help during that brief but anxious crisis. Together we made it through to the musical promised land.

Whoa, I am so sorry this is late. I usually get this out within a day or two following "broadcast". The week has gotten away from me. may of you know that I'm a high school teacher in SF. I cannot tell you how challenging my job can be. I do absolutely love what I do, though. And having the ability to let it all hang loose on Monday nights is such a thrill. I do this all for you.

No guests this week. Started off with some jazz, moved into the garage realm, a deep blues set, then a looooong Dead jam, continuing the 50th anniversary celebration.

And news just in that the great Leonard Nimoy has passed away from COPD at the age of 83 has really taken a toll on my day. I'm certain Radio Valencia DJs, including myself, will be paying homage to him over the next week or so. Please tune in. It's time to get Star Trek on Netflix rollin' for the weekend. My 10 year old daughter will be crushed about his passing. I know that I am.

Listening to my show is really great if you have ADD. I don't have ADD, then again it's possible that some people might suggest that maybe, possibly, perhaps a chance, you never know, maybe John Hell has a little bit of ADD. Never been diagnosed! Though as a child I was told that I was hyperactive, I would very quickly find my way to sugar if it was within smelling distance. With that being said, listening my show is also a soothing and calming experience for many. For instance, take tonights show, please (HA!). I was pretty much in the mood for all Jazz, and okay fine, maybe a little funk, and possibly a little soul. But really in the end doesn't all of that kind of fit into the same nice big fat funk box?

And then something amazing happened, the "legendary" DJ Casey Kasem left this mortal coil. He kicked the bucket. He moved off into the outer worlds. So, of course that left me no choice but to present him and the only way that I find relevant, Which is of course to play Negativland. 

You see, as a long time noncommercial, underground DJ, I have always found the late Mr. Kasem to be, how should I put this politely, a bit of a turd. Yes, it's true I really do believe that he is one of the major forces of evil, or, should I say was one of the major forces of evil in all of the commercial music industry. So I am not really finding that I miss him. As a matter of fact if anything I'm thrilled. I mean no offense. And who knows what that means? I don't mean any offense to his family or his friends or even his fans, but I will tell you that I really believe deep in my heart he caused more damage for talented and original musicians then possibly any of the owners of commercial media in the United States since the 1970s.

So I interrupted some jazz funk soul programming on my show this evening to pay"tribute" to Mr. Kasem, and hoping that may be the final nail in the coffin for himself and people who feel obliged to believe that they can seriously determine what America wants to listen to. Yeah, keep on reaching for the stars there Casey. As a matter fact get as far out here as you possibly can. Maybe now some real talented and original artists will have a chance to make there own impression on the listening audience without you dictating who should be on top? Say hi to Dick Clark for me.

We have made it once again through yet another glorious Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day! And what a day it was. How do you celebrate this day? I for one took time to meditate on the glory that is the message of Dr. King.
What a man.

And what a show I have for you tonight. (great segue, huh?) I start out with a tribute to the man. Some Nina Simone, followed by Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln. Try not to shed a tear, OK? I then follow it up with some pre-punk that I had left over from last week. Check out that last set, with Billy Holiday into T Rex!!!

This Thursday night at The Chapel on Valencia is the triumphant return of Wooden Shjips. For any longtime listener to my show, you're no doubt aware of my love for this SF psychedelic quartet. A Season in Hell #142: This Cat's Too Cool For You

It's good to be back. I haven't taken so many breaks in a good decade. I'm back in the groove after tonight's show.

After such hullabaloo from the Rock Fight 10 show, I needed a much deserved break. Also, I produced and hosted Comic Outpost TV for the SF comic store Comic Outpost, at Comic Con in San Diego. More on that coming soon. What an eyeopener that was.

My show has never been genre-specific. I plays what I wants to. But that's not saying that I can't focus on a specific genre from time to time. I've been collecting music (LPs, CDs, digital) since I was a wee lad, dating back to my first KISS records in the mid 1970s.

I have a rule when I shop for music: if I purchase three things or more, one MUST be from an International artist (reggae, dub, middle-eastern, etc.), one must be Jazz. By doing this I've realy grown a very well-rounded library. Tonight I was in the mood for Jazz. Most of the show is some tasty vinyl treats.
