I was feeling in the grove...er, groove tonight. In the groove. Yeah, that's it. Hmmmmmmm

A Monday without a guest is a rare thing these days, so I took the opportunity to go deeper into my library, which included a few CDs. I know, I know. this is not my normal thing, but there were a few songs that have been going through my mind that I only own on CD. You have to understand, the 90s and 00s it was hard to find your favorite artists releasing anything new on vinyl. CD was King there for a wee bit.

I remember working at Tower Records in San Mateo (88-91), and they were making the transition away from vinyl. The staff was in an uproar about this, as we all knew CDs were a fad, like the 8-track tape. Since production costs for CDs were so low, it was attractive to the company to go in this direction. And for too many years it played this way. Unless an artist was with a vinyl-friendly label, or self-releasing, they had to go with CDs. 

I collected a lot of CDs during these years. Thousands. For a number of years I had quite an impressive CD shelving setup that I built myself. Floor to ceiling, twelve feet across, 12 shelves. Thousands of CDs, all organized by genre. And then I moved to a smaller home and away went the shelves, as I had to place them all into binders. And the binders sit in my closet. Since then I don't spend much time playing them. But there they sit. And there's some good stuff in those binders! 

So tonight I had a few songs in my head that were laying low in my closet. Eight of the songs I played tonight are on CD. Not that you're keeping count. I may need to pull more from there, or at least not hde the binders away in my closet.

New music from Earth Tongue (produced by Ty Segall), Angine de Poitrine, Surprise Privilege, and OSees tonight. There's a remaster/reissue from Aretha Franklin in there, an NWA edit you didn't know you needed too. 

Daniel Haver from the FabMab was in...and is quickly becoming my foil in the best sense. He brought some truly "great" 7"s that'll leave you as stumped as we were trying to figure out just exactly how old Sheila Raye is...or was. 24? 57? Who knows? 

If this isn't a show that's chock full of punk, funk and junk, then I'll throw my CD collection away.

Sometimes I just need the music to do the talking. I. Am. Pissed. Aren't you? What fresh kind of hell are we living in today? Unprecedented, unhinged, fragile masculinity, a show of strength, phony religious grandstanding, narcissistic mind fuck, controlling the news cycle. He thinks this is all a TV show and he's the star, and WHY DON'T YOU LOVE ME??????MOMMY??????DADDY????????

Someone needs a hug.

This show is all about protests and revolution. I have been to my share. There is so much I could have played, and isn't that telling? I also chose some important speeches I hope you'll find interesting and important during this time of struggle. Malcolm X, Angela Davis, MLK Jr. Mumia Abu Jamal all have something to say about protest and revolution. 

And we thought the pandemic alone was going to define 2020? We're not even half way through the year, and there's an election in November, if we can keep it.

After so many shows where it feels like I'm paying tribute to some lost musical genius, I needed to cleanse my Hellish soul. This show is sure to get your toes tappin'. On the menu are some classics and some tracks that are soon to be classic in your collection.

Today is a day of celebration! May 3rd is the birthday of the Godfather of Soul, the HARDEST working man in show business (when he was still alive), Mr. Please Please Please, Mr. I Feel Good, Mr. Sex Machine: JAMES BROWN!

And to celebrate what would have been his 83rd birthday, I'm doing the only thing that I can: play one full hour of JB and JB related tunes. Specifically I'm playing some tracks you don't hear much on the radio, as well as a "Funky Drummer" set, as that tune is the most sampled tune in the history of music. I personally believe that drummer Clyde Stubblefield deserves a royalty each time his sick rhythm is copped.

To continue the party join me on KFJC Tuesday night, 6-10, where I host the prime time slot of the annual "Doin' It To Death" 28 hour James Brown birthday party!

In the second hour of tonight's show I feature two of my favorite bands, both of which are coming to town this week: Boris (playing New Parish in Oakland on Thursday, May 5th) and Melvins, featuring Steve McDonald of Redd Kross/OFF on bass (playing Slims on Thursday, May 5th, and Friday, May 6th along with Melt Banana and Napalm Death). You get 30 minutes of Melvins, followed by 30 minutes of Boris.

I'm going to both, but am having a hard time understanding why Boris would opt to play on the same night as the Melvins (Thursday), when they owe their existence (actually just their name) to them? It feels sacrilegious.

This is quite possibly the strangest themed show I have ever done. Maybe not.

I can't recall what it was that inspired me to want to play a bunch of international groups tonight, but you can thank me later. The first hour features groups from Egypt, Nigeria, Turkey, India, Mali, and Jamaica. it's got a funky beat, and you can get down to it.

The second hour features a tribute to Paul Kantner, the founder of Jefferson Airplane, and Signe Anderson, the first female lead singer of the same group. They both died on January 28th, both at the age of 74! I'm guessing they had some sort of death pact. I find it interesting that the JA homepage makes no mention of the fact that they both died. Hmm. I play a couple of live JA/JS tracks, and you have just got to listen to how high Grace Slick is during the Wooden Ships track from 1970. WOW!






There's some new Melvins near the end, as well as Dale Crover-led Altamont near the beginning of the second hour. Altamont is headlining a Valley King Records showcase at Thee Parkside this Saturday night. You have got to be at this show!!! Look, I ended that last sentence with three (count them) exclamation marks! That means I'm triply serious about you being in attendance. Honky was supposed to be there in support, but had scheduling conflicts, so Dale's other side project PORN will play, along with Older Sun. This promises to be a great, and rockin' show. I refuse to get on my high horse tonight. But if I did, then I would probably talk about the tripe that is the Grammy Awards. Giving awards to those who sell the most records (what am I supposed to call it these days? CDs? MP3s? Digital Download Of The Year (The DOTY?)) to those who only listen to them because, like sheep to the slaughter, the musically and culturally illiterate audience will buy anything they think they'll be accepted for consuming. "Oh please love me, I just LOVE the new (enter name of culturally acceptable artist here)". Makes me want to vomit.

There was a time that I thought I wanted to be a part of this "lowest-common-denominator" crew. I was about five years old then. When I completed my BA in radio broadcast, after 12 years in non-commercial radio, including three years in commercial radio, I still thought that I could make a go of it. I thought that I could make my way up to being a General Manager within 10 years, and from there I'd be able to make programming decisions that pushed the limits. I even worked for a music promotions company, that will go unnamed. My job there was to push Top 100 hits of the day. I used to read "Hits" and "Hitmakers" magazine every day, and call program directors at stations around the country, telling them to give the latest Bobby Brown song a try; or even the new Elton John. ugh. Just take the "S" from the end of those two magazines and put them at the front of the title, and you get a clear idea of what I thought about that time in my life. I hated it when I was doing it, and even now I want to throw up in my mouth a little.

This September will mark my 27th year in radio. Even during my few short years in the commercial world, I was still doing non-commercial and pirate radio. I've continued, all these years, to investigate new artist, regardless of genre. And every show is chock full of many genres. Just look below. No guests tonight. It's just two hours where I get to paint an aural picture for you and yours. I hope you take the time to give it a listen. The banter isn't blathery, and the segues are smooth. After all, radio is the art of the segue.

There should be an award for that.

A Season in Hell #132: Kalri$$ian Makes Me Feel Dirty

I don't think you're getting enough nasty in your life. Therefore, I believe it's up to me, John Hell, to bring more of the dirty into your far-too-clean existence. How to do this most effectively? Well that's an easy one, it's all about Kalri$$ian baby! 

Kalri$$ian is back with a new full-length CD: Star Magic, and they're in the studio talking up the music, the hype, the nasty, and the CD release party at the Supper Club this Saturday night, April 27th. This is the PERFECT location to see this debaucherous crew in all their glory.

A couple of weeks ago, my dear friend Pepe Ozan passed away, after a short battle with an undetermined illness. Pepe was an amazing artist, who is well known to the Burning Man community for his annual Opera, which he co-wrote, and where were performed on playa-covered steel of his own creation. His work was like him: larger than life. He also fell in love with the people and the country of India, having spent a lot of time there, and filming a few films about his experiences and the colorful people. There was no containing Pepe, and he lived his life unapologetically.  He will be missed.

A Season in Hell #129: Ghosts in the Honeymoon

What a great day. I took the day off because today is the only religious holiday that I celebrate: St. Stupid's Day, brought to you by Bishop Joey and the First Church of the Last Laugh. If you live in the Bay Area, then you have no excuses, you need to join us next year. I love living here.

After a couple of hours parading around the financial district, making fun of the suits, it was time to get ready for the next great event of the afternoon: the wedding of Dominic Trix to his bride-to-be, Alicia.

About a month ago I was asked to officiate their nuptials. Being an ordained minister of the Universal Life Church since 1996, I was only happy to oblige my dear friend from KFJC. I've known the great Dominic since I started their way back in 1988. Trix and Alicia tied the knot at the beautiful Sutro Baths in SF. And what a beautiful afternoon and ceremony it was.

Following the ceremony it was time to get to the studio. Trix and Alicia have a noise duo named Acid Blast. They brought the entire wedding party into the studio, and performed live in the final 20 minutes of the show. It's worth a listen. Turn it up!

The music for the first hour is pretty damn funky. Get ready to put your dancing shoes on. 

The second hour features the return to the Radio Valencia studios of my dear friend and talented guitar slinger, Eric McFadden. Eric has a new band, T.E.N., featuring Eric, along with Thomas Pridgen of Mars Volta and Norwood Fisher of Fishbone. They're playing The Independent in SF this Friday. I can tell you where I'll be that night. We played a couple of tunes from the new EP, spoke about the full-length they're about to release, and the upcoming tour. Eric really does need to find some time to sleep. In the meantime, ROCK ON!

In the final 20 minutes or so, the newlywed noise-makers, Acid Blast performed in the studio to a live audience. We had about 20 people hanging out with us. This would have been impossible in our former digs. We love our new home!
