This is one of those times when I really count my blessings. Everyone has their struggles, so don't let me start getting into my own. Does any of it really matter? No. None of it matters. Holding a grudge does nothing but take the time away from having a really good time. And isn't that what we want: to have a really good time?

Why suffer? What does it bring? What have we gained by our own suffering? Experience? Isn't there any other way to grow? I've learned more lessons than blah, blah, blah. Is this what life is all about: learning lessons so as not to repeat the same mistakes over and over again? What if I learned a lesson, put in my best effort, asked all the right questions, opened myself up to scrutiny and vulnerability, articulated my boundaries, and still tripped?!

What then?

Throw it all away? Remain alone for the sake of caring for my heart? Risk appearing aloof or uncaring just so I don't have to clean up a mess that I worked diligently to avoid happen in the first place? We're not a solitary species? But what's so bad about being alone? I have my music to keep my warm. Even the kids grow up to live their own lives.

Enjoy the moment. That's all we have. Meditate on that. You can do your best to make up for the past. Take accountability even when it feels impossible. Make amends. Speak your truth with the most compassionate head and heart. Be the best listener. Ask the deeper questions. Be vulnerable and available for the criticisms that will come your way (and they will come!).

Prepare for the future, knowing as hard as you do, life has a way of throwing a lot of curveballs at you. Be calm through the storm. Flow like water. Respond, don't react. Breathe. Always breathe. And know that everyone else is going through the shit too.

All we have in now. It's only now. It's always now. Bring your best now. Now. And do not beat yourself up if the best you have now is not the same as what others are bringing. Never compare yourself to others, ever. You'll lose that battle. So don't do it. Rise above that. You're not rising above others, you're rising above the idea that others are above you. No one is above anyone else. We're all treading water in our own way. Our job is to do it as calmly as possible. Don't fight the waves. Don't fight the tide.

Flow like water.

Forgive.

Love.

Be. Here. Now.

And listen to good music.

Well my dear friend Eric "EB" Brown passed away on Monday morning. What a dear man he was. Always ready with a smile and a quick retort. I appreciated him in more ways than I can count. I'll miss you, dear friend. My heart goes out to your wonderful wife, Cat, and your entire family. My heart also goes out to our large circle of friends, who have lost countless lives over the past decade. 

Fuck cancer. 

Do you ever think about how you're going to die? I think I'm going to be stabbed to death. Isn't that a lovely thought? I've thought about this more times than I care to admit; almost always when I'm walking in a compromised neighborhood, late at night. "Will I make it out of here alive" is usually the question I ask myself. So far, so good. 

Don't be so nihilistic, Mr. Hell.

I have no death wish. I would love to be happy and healthy deep into my senior years. I want to see my kids grow up, reaching their dreams, or at least finding stability. That would be nice. And there's too much music to enjoy. I need to be spinning records for a few more decades, thank you very much.

But when I think about who we've lost, I fairly confident these very active and creative people also wanted to keep engaging and producing for many more years. They didn't ask for this. And they fought against it, tooth and nail. 

Fuck cancer.

I think about what Jerry Garcia said about how he was going to live this life: "I choose fun". He died young, only 53. And he died with a smile on his face. Of course it was the drugs and diabetes that did him in. Luckily I have no drug addiction, and I'm healthier than I've been in many many years. 

I'm reminded what Miles Davis said about drugs: "When you're rich, cocaine ain't a habit." Thanks Miles. 

This show wasn't meant to turn into a memorial, but many of the songs have that flavor. New music from Eric McFadden, Death Valley Girls, Le Butcherettes, Brigid Dawson, JD Pinkus, Pedro Connect, and red Fang.

Music and mayhem for two hours. You're good with that, right? I really had no chance, btw. I have to keep up appearances. I really listen to Helen Reddy and Montovani at home. You knew that though. You're smart like that. I'm boring as all get out. Dad jokes a-plenty! I plug my ears through all this music you hear during my show. Blech. Who needs it? amiright?????

And then there's the guests! Sheesh! Who the Hell wants to talk to people? I really just want to sink into my comfy couch, eat some bon-bons and watch train videos on YouTube. 

First hour is some stuff, follower by things. Ha! New music from Red Fang, Toshi Kasai and Daddy Longhead. Such goodness coming from these artists. I'm looking forward to interviewing producer, engineer, electronics wiz Toshi Kasai in the upcoming weeks.

Second hour brings a visit from the one and only Mike Dingle of the 3rd Thursday Band, and Marlon Kasberg of KFJC (I won't share his airname, but you will know him when you hear him). They stopped in to talk up this weekend hullabaloo happening at Winters Tavern in Pacific, Saturday and Sunday, featuring a tribute to the late. great rock/punk saxophonist Steve Mackay. The interview was fun and way too much roommate radio, but silly nonetheless. 

There's also some great music featuring Steve Mackay late in the second hour.

If you really want to give a listen to what a bunch of idiots who have known one another for 20+ years in and around the music and radio history, forgetting that they're on the radio, and ignoring the listeners, then you really want to give this a lesson. To be honest though, Marlon and I did our best to keep Dingle on point, and talking directly into the microphone. I love that guy.

I've been reading the "Three-Body Problem", by Cixin Liu, and that question comes up throughout the trilogy. 

As for this here show, it's an interesting one. I'm training a new host, DJ Collin, who's going to be starting his new show Friday's 6-8PM Pacific, "Digging with DJ Collin". The second half of this show features a lot of his selections. I really put him to the test tonight. There were so many tech issues, even I was getting a bit flustered. He was chill the whole way through, and really gave his best. I can't wait to tune in to his show!

Our new home is really attracting some great talent. Please take the time to tune in regularly throughout the week. You never know when your next favorite host will knock you off your feet.

I hate being late getting my shows up. It's not that I'm lazy, it's that I have to make the time to fit this in. And I really want to give you quality, always. How am I doing? Can you give me a grade? I can take the criticism. I have to. We all have to. What kind of world would this be if we never made ourselves available to constructive criticism? Can you imagine if our government and corporate leaders never listened to quality advice, that may or may not counter their own ideas? Seriously, can you even imagine??? I'm waiting for an old fashioned video screen wipe that makes it appear that we're entering a dream sequence, where we see some fictionalized TV character showing us the many tropes of what it's like when they fail to listen to good advice. You may be doing this too.

Maybe I should just stick to my lane? In this case my lane is music. This show it got sweet and loud. Sometimes loud is cathartic. We need to purge some energy time and again. I was reading recently when you can't get your child to focus, get them to be physically active; it allows them to get the distractions out, so they can focus on the task at hand, with minimal negative emotion. Let's look at this two hour show as a good sprint around the block.

I Am Not Your Jukebox!

In no way am I trying to mock the late great philosopher, historian, educator, and writer, James Baldwin. He was a true master; much more eloquent than I could ever hope to be. 

However, the truth remains, I am not here for you to put a quarter in and expect your choice of song to jump out. That wouldn't be fair to you, myself, nor the listener. I rarely take a request, and when I do I only trust a few people that I have known to have a stellar reputation for musical knowledge to throw me a track during me show. Damn, what an elitist bougie bastard I am! No, I'm an artist. I have a two hour aural canvas I'm painting for you with sound. 

I do love it when bands send me their music. I do love it when bands send me their music. Case in point, I love this new release from local Bay Area band The Campbell Apartment, and I'm thrilled they shared music from their latest release "Curmudgeon" with me. And thank you Ari and crew for allowing me to choose the track I played tonight! But I'm no sycophant. And it's hard, you know? I'm friendly with so many amazing musicians, who's music I really enjoy listening to more often than not. That being said, if you're sending me music you want me to play, please be prepared for me to choose the track I think best fits on my show. I'm not saying this because some bands have given me flack for not playing their chosen single. I cannot think of the last time that even happened. I'm just trying to keep the boundaries clear.

7. Interview kick ass musicians who love their craft
8. Make love
9. Start a revolution

OK, that was nine goals. I think I've got this.

When I said earlier that I don't take requests, that doesn't mean you can't send me what you like. Just don't ask for it on Monday's between 8-10PM. 

I have also decided to take over the Radio Valencia stream during the days when there isn't a live show being broadcast, to share my live bootleg library with you. Wednesday, June 24th from noon-2pm I have Pink Floyd live at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, April 29, 1970 cued up. What a treat!

Do we get to listen to music in the afterlife? I sure hope so, or it's going to be seriously boring. Or maybe when we die we can travel anywhere in time, so we can go see all those concerts that we were too young to attend when we were alive. That would be pretty awesome!

Who would you go see?

I'd see all the obvious 60s and 70s rock bands that I never got to see, but add to that Nina Simone, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Maybe Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams and Johny Thunders. Too many great artists to count, really.

Tonight's show wasn't about a lot of dead rock stars. No. There's lots of life in this here show you're about to listen to. Oh it's got its share of dead musicians, but don't let that get you down.

I think I play it a little too safe on my show from time to time. There are nights that I bring a lot of black metal, or speed metal, or, well, anything darker than I usually play for you, but I hold off thinking "they don't want to hear this stuff". I think I've been insulting you, and for that I am sorry. I just didn't want to ostracize my audience. I fell into the "lowest-common-denominator" style of programming. Damn, what is wrong with me?

To make up for my radio shortcomings I decided to get fairly dark tonight. There's some metal, punk and garage thrown in, as well as some pretty choice hard rock cuts. It's loud, it's fun, and from the feedback I received during the show, well-considered.

Radio is supposed to be about the art of the segue. I choose music that I believe will move you. That doesn't mean it will always be a pleasant movement. It does mean that I have thought hard about why I want to play this song, and hope that you will take the time to consume it. I'm painting a two hour audio picture just for you. Isn't that great?! Just another in the many reasons that I love Radio Valencia.

Next week I'll probably play two hours of Americana and Bakersfield Country. Also, I have tickets to see Dave and Phil Alvin to give away. Tune in!

This Thursday night at Folio Books on 24th Street in Noe Valley, I'm interviewing music critic and author Joel Selvin about his latest book "Altamont, The Rolling Stones, The Hells Angels, and the Inside Story of Rock's Darkest Day". It should make for a great hour. It starts at 7PM. Come on down and meet me and Joel, and get a copy of this great read. I flew through it. I thought I knew everything there was to know about Altamont. Well I do now.

There's free-form radio and then there's FREE-FORM RADIO! I've been doing this too long to stop now. There are times when I'm driving late at night, pushing the buttons on my FM radio, thinking to myself "why am I hearing the same songs at this late hour that I would hear in the middle of the day? Shouldn't the late hours be the time when radio stations stretch out, try something new, or perhaps even a deeper album cut? Isn't this the time when they can play a 20 minute track? Isn't this the perfect opportunity for them to try out a new, local artist who deserves the airplay? WHY AREN'T THEY DOING THIS? And why haven't I written a letter? Tweeted? Made a call? "

If I was given a chance to program KSAN (aka:107.7 The Bone) I would make "Big Daddy" Tom Donahue proud. That man must be seriously spinning in his grave to see what has happened with his love child. Some say Steven Seaweed is an institution. I say that he's been phoning it in for about two decades now. No offense, Steven. You've made a great career out of being super excited to be playing another AMAZING Van Hagar track, and having people call out the WEEDMAN! I've worked in commercial radio. They hand you the playlist and tell you what you are and are not allowed to say and play. Any deviation from the norm and you're out the door. All to please the listeners. Yeah right. It's all about the sponsors. There is no longer any art or risk-taking in the land of mainstream radio. And it's been this way for a good 25 years now; perhaps longer.

Tonights show is all over the aural spectrum. Brand new music from Boss Hog, and CFM has a new LP out as well. There's some sizzling rock, toe-tappin' country, Japanese Psych, nouveau Americana, Seattle Grunge (I hate that term), and American Punk. I'm sure I left out something. Monday night I filmed my show on FB live. A few weeks back my guest, and talented chartreuse, Phat Man Dee did this and we had over 100 people tuned in. Why not tonight? Then again, why the hell would anyone want to watch a radio show? Really, there is nothing exciting about this. OK, I do a bit of a song and dance during my show when I'm off mic, that's for sure. Other than that???

Lots of rockin' about on this night. New music spread throughout, including new Zig Zags, Crystal Fairy (Melvins side project), Ty Segall, Blind Shake, Meatbodies, King Gizzard, and Red Fang. Also, it's the 50th anniversary of the release of the first Doors record (feel old yet?).

I throw in some covers from Thee Headcoats (did you know Billy Childish was a renowned book translator?), Bob Seger (there's a good story I tell in there), Nicki Bluhm, Minutemen, and Bonnie "Prince" Billy.

I'm like a walking music encyclopedia for this show. Check it out and share it far and wide. I probably won't make it a habit of doing the FB live thing, because who wants to watch a DJ stand around picking their nose trying to decide what to play next?
