So, I think I'm getting the hang of this shelter-at-home thing. I have more music playing than usual, and I'm actually getting along with my family! Who knew that bonding with family is actually a thing?

And when it comes to hosting my weekly show, Hell's Kitchen Radio, on Radio Valencia, I have more time to go through my collection to choose music I think you'll enjoy. This show was fairly diverse, and a lot of fun to put on for you.

I was reminded the other day that May 3rd is fast approaching, which means another James Brown birthday special is due. Many of you know I am a huge JB fan, and I co-host the annual KFJC 26 hour James Brown birthday special "Doin' It To Death", every year on his May 3rd birthday. Alas, this year, the special is not happening; a TRAVESTY!

But do not be alarmed, this Monday night, 8-10PM (PDST) I will be playing two hours of James Brown and James Brown-related material. So get your funky dance shoes ready to groove. Get on with your bad self, because John Hell will have you gettin' up on the get down Monday night at 8.

As for this show, take a look at the playlist below and enjoy.

If you're on the podcast page on Radio Valencia, then you will notice the little white dice on the green field. If you click it, you will be taken to a random show of mine. Go ahead, click the dice, take the ride. Thanks to my boy, Wrybread, for putting that together.

Enjoy.

Once again I have outdone myself. Even after almost 30 years I still have the ability to put a set together that continues to prove that commercial radio has, does, and always will suck.

The legendary record label and recording studio, Fantasy Records, is closing. I pepper in a few artifacts in tribute, including some CCR, Lenny Bruce, Rancid, and Primus. I took a few requests, one of which is a brilliant 20 minute long devotional Sufi piece, and some Flo and Eddie in the form of a live Zappa/Mother's from 1970.

But that's not all! You also get the shortest, yet most inspiring version of the (almost) entire Tommy LP, an electronic-voiced Eric Clapton side project, and two horny drunk women pissed off at their even more drunk boyfriend. Oh yes, and a really pissed off preacher.

What will I do next Monday to top this one? Tune in Monday 8-10PM to find out.

Monday, August 20th, my brother from another mother, Eric McFadden will be in the studio to co-host our 3rd (non-consecutive) Steel Bridge Special. This is always a hoot.

Enjoy.

Time for a trip around the globe, musically speaking. Since we're early in the new year and I have yet to check out any new releases this seemed like the perfect time to focus on some international sounds. Tonight we go to West Africa, Central Africa, Thailand, Iran Turkey, India, Jamaica, and England for some really groovy excursions. When I shop for music I have a rule: if I purchase three records, one must be from the international section. Doing this I have really grown that genre over the years.

The show is pretty groovy throughout, so don't be shy about dancing while you're diggin' it.

I close the show with a very hard to find live acoustic version of New Speedway Boogie by the Grateful Dead. I'm going to commit to playing more music from my extensive live archive in the second hour of my show each week. This June I'll be co-hosting Rock Fight with sound engineer John Karr. Perhaps I have finally met my match. Tune in to find out.

***NEWS FLASH****It's time for the 2017 Run For The Lilies contest. You email me a list of ten famous people you believe will meet their maker by December 31, 2017, and the person with the most correct selections "wins". The only rule: you may not partake in their demise. Email me at mrjohnhell@gmail.com by 5PM Sunday, January 29th, 2017. I will announce the 2016 winner on my show (and their winning list) on Monday, January 30th.

Enjoy.

How I love to teach the next generation of great DJs!!! Tonight I had the pleasure of hosting the next great Radio Valencia DJ, Gatsby Fassbinder, who hosts "Tighten Up Your Wig" every Thursday from 4-6PM. He chose some amazing tracks to play this evening (all of which I marked "GB"). He easily won "Set of the Night" as well. This Gatsby fella is pretty darn good. Give him a listen.

I dished up some tasty treats as well. Last Poets, Nick Cave, William Shatner, new Boris, and new Magnetic Zeros (they appear to be in the verge of dropping the Edward Sharpe prefix).

Something for the whole family to devour, every Monday night, 8-10PM on Radio Valencia.

Next Monday night, guitarist Michael Cobra will guest DJ with me. His last appearance in the kitchen was a memorable one. Take a listen here, and then tune in next week.

Enjoy.

I can't recall what it was that inspired me to want to play a bunch of international groups tonight, but you can thank me later. The first hour features groups from Egypt, Nigeria, Turkey, India, Mali, and Jamaica. it's got a funky beat, and you can get down to it.

The second hour features a tribute to Paul Kantner, the founder of Jefferson Airplane, and Signe Anderson, the first female lead singer of the same group. They both died on January 28th, both at the age of 74! I'm guessing they had some sort of death pact. I find it interesting that the JA homepage makes no mention of the fact that they both died. Hmm. I play a couple of live JA/JS tracks, and you have just got to listen to how high Grace Slick is during the Wooden Ships track from 1970. WOW!

There's some new Melvins near the end, as well as Dale Crover-led Altamont near the beginning of the second hour. Altamont is headlining a Valley King Records showcase at Thee Parkside this Saturday night. You have got to be at this show!!! Look, I ended that last sentence with three (count them) exclamation marks! That means I'm triply serious about you being in attendance. Honky was supposed to be there in support, but had scheduling conflicts, so Dale's other side project PORN will play, along with Older Sun. This promises to be a great, and rockin' show. See you all there. Follow the links for more info. Alan Forbes did an amazing poster for the show, and Justin McNeil of Valley King/Secret Serpents announced that split 7"s will be available at the show. GO TO THIS SHOW!

You have until this Friday, February 5th to email me your Run for the Lilies 2016 list of 10 famous people you believe will be dead by the end of 2016. Email me at mrjohnhell@gmail.com Winners will be announce in January 2017, and gifts will be awarded soon after. GET THOSE LISTS IN!!! (see, three exclamation marks)

See you next Monday night, where I may or may not have a special guest and tickets to give away.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #186: Dubbing Man

International artists, and Dub is on the turntables for tonight. Burning Man is a wash, so listen in and get DUB with it.

On Saturday night Radio Valencia broadcast live from Bottom of the Hill, for the annual Strummerville New Music Foundation benefit. So many great and talented musicians performing the music of Joe Strummer and The Clash. You can hear that show by going here. Most impressive was Eric McFadden's performance of Bankrobber, done in dub style. So when I was considering what to play for you tonight, and staring as I often do at my music collection for hours on end, it hit me like a brick that I should be doing a show of Dub for you.

The last half hour of the show reaches out towards other international sounds. This is a great show to either sit back and get truly deep into, or even to have on in the background while you're moving around the house, or taking a seriously deep bong hit. Either way, I think you'll really enjoy what I've created for you tonight.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #149: Take A Chance On Me

Excellent show through and through. Each set was a winner. I think you'll really enjoy this one. Get ready to really dance in the second hour.

I think it's shows like this one that really show my range as a DJ. You've got your indie, your punk, funk, international, rap. It's got pretty much everything that your commercial radio dreck would never dare approach.

I wish more people would lobby commercial radio stations and request music like you hear on this show. I do. Make that happen. Let me know how they respond. I can probably guess, but let's take a shot at it anyway.

Enjoy and annoy.
