I'm not really going anywhere. How could I? Monday nights just wouldn't be the same. Did you know I have been hosting a show on Monday nights since 2000, with only a brief break in there between radio stations? 

I was at San Francisco Liberation Radio from 2000-2003, then at Pirate Cat Radio and the FCCFree from 2006-2009, before starting Radio Valencia in 2010. And for each station I hosted the Monday 8pm show. It's like I'm some kind of institution. I don't care much for institutions, and I'm a teacher!

My years at KFJC (1989 - 1997) saw me hosting numerous slots during my tenure. When I was down at the "Wave of the West" one was required to host a graveyard shift (2am-6am) for a number of months and be signed off by the Program Director before you could take another shift. Graves are a good place to take risks. I took many, including once hosting my dear friend, Noa "The Watermonk of Dah", who, along with myself, played loud music and took calls of people making their "confessions" to myself, the Reverend Dah Wave, and Noa. That ridiculous show from 1990 almost got me kicked off the station, when my PD Les Scurry, confronted me in his very Napoleonic way, telling me what an embarrassing ass I was for that show, and since we didn't have a delay system, any one of the callers could have sworn live on the air and there would have been no way to cancel it out!

I have a cassette of the night and have only (partially) listened to it one time while I was driving over the San Mateo Bridge. This was probably in 1996 or so. I was driving alone and so embarrassed that I pulled the tape out and threw it in my backseat. I should have thrown it in the Bay. This means I still have it somewhere. 

oooh boy.

I have learned it's ok to embarrass yourself at least once a day. I tend to reach my quota by 9am. 

Tonight was all about me bringing a stack of music and figuring out just what to do with it. It came out pretty damn good!

I'm putting in some effort to list the album and year of song release. Let's see how long I keep this up. 

I won't be in this Monday night. I'm headed to The Chapel to see OSees! Never miss an OSees show! I return September 8th with local legend Scott Amendola, the drummer with the perpetual smile. We'll talk about his years playing for so many remarkable musicians, as well as promote his upcoming show at the Back Room on September 11th with SticklerPhonics.

I believe we should never pay to see music performed in a public park. I refuse to pay to go to Outside Lands. And as much as I love the Grateful Dead, I will not be paying to see Dead and Company in Golden Gate Park at the end of the month. Pubic parks are for the people. Our tax dollars pay for them. If a band wants to get paid they should find a private venue and host the show there.

There are exceptions to every rule.

Mosswood Meltdown is this coming weekend, and I couldn't be more giddy about attending. The event, formerly known as "Burger Boogaloo", and hosted my trash-glam favorite John Waters, is the only music festival held in a public space that I have ever considered paying to attend. 

It's a punk rock dream. I can't think of a better way to spend a weekend.

I haven't been since Bikini Kill and Kim Gordon headlined a few years back, and this year's lineup is super exciting: DEVO, Bratmobile, OSees, Shannon and the Clams, along with many more. Though I have to admit L'Trimm's hit "Cars With The Boom" always bugged me when it was first released. But you know, live for the moment.

I also went record shopping last week (surprise!) and throw down some tasty fusion with a Les McCann track that'll have you floating. There's also a real crate-diggers find with an original pressing of Hawkwind's third record Doremi Fasol Latido (read that slowly), followed by covers of some Hawkwind tunes (one written by Lemmy and covered by Motorhead) to close out the show.

Nobody hates John Avalos. At least that's the way he puts it. There may be some who dislike him, but he's proven himself to be a steady left-leaning voice in the tumultuous political sea that is San Francisco for twenty years now. Avalos represented District 11 on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 2008-2016, ran a very powerful mayoral campaign where he came in second to Ed Lee, and now sits on the Democratic County Central Committee where he sees the party continuing to drift to the right, as big money continues to influence the party.

We spoke for the first hour, and yes, it got testy at times, but John and I are on the same side of the political fence, so we just kept agreeing with one another. I really was trying to be objective.

Not really.

The big takeaway is that we cannot give up, ever. We must be kind to our neighbors, be open and inclusive whenever and wherever we can, and take the fight to the streets.

As for the music, there's new LA Witch, Death Valley Girls, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Lambrini Girls, and Jon Anderson.

Walking into the studio tonight I was met with at least three blocks of protesters, out in the street making their voices heard in opposition of ICE policies happening right now across the state and across the nation. As of this writing 47 is actively having National Guard and Marines(!!!!) in the streets of Los Angeles putting down peaceful demonstrations, and calling the protestors insurrectionists,  justifying his use of the posse comitatus act, which forbids the president of using active duty military in the streets of our nation.

There goes our democracy.

But you knew that already. 

The hardest part is separating the "truth" from the propaganda. I have a degree in media literacy, and I can tell you this shit is really exhausting to digest. This is one of the main reasons I quit social media. I dropped Facebook in 2020, and Instagram on Inauguration Day 2025. I just can't.

Even listening to NPR (leans left) or reading the NY Times (leans left and omits far too much) is getting unbearable. I often have to read the Guardian UK and al Jazeera to get a better idea of what is happening in our own country.

That being said, I have a platform all my own with Radio Valencia.

We have told our staff that we aren't going to censor their voices, but Radio Valencia doesn't take any political stance as a radio station. Therefore, our hosts need to state their opinions are their own, and not the stance of the station. 

Yadda, yadda, yadda.

I'm hosting former San Francisco Board of Supervisors member John Avalos on my show Monday, June 23rd to talk about the current state of affairs. John always brings good conversation. Tune in.

For tonights show I was training a new RV staffer: Max! Great guy. He's going to be hosting a Black Metal show on Mondays 4-6pm soon. I got him playing some music he brought along (marked below "- Max") and talking with me about music and his own radio history. 

I also went record shopping last week (of course I did), so there's that to look forward to. New music from Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Zig Zags, Chime Oblivion (John Dwyer of OCS side project), Teri Gender Bender (of Le Butcherettes) and too much more jazz, punk, blues, and a tribute to Sly Stone who passed at age 82 Monday morning.

Well, you know, it's always a protest, even in the best of times. Use it, or lose, amiright?

Having a radio show on a Monday means I get to host a lot of national holidays. This isn't my first go-round on President's Day, but it sure feels like an extra special one, if you ask me. And it being Black History Month I felt that I could do a pretty good mash-up to boot.

Folks, it's official, we have a fascist for president. You can't say we don't. Even when people were claiming Shrub (George W. You, know: little Bush) was one, I was always quick to point out that he didn't fit the definition well enough, but if we aren't careful he'll set the stage for some else to come in who truly is one. Well, what do ya know? 

You disagree? That's fine. Tell me all about it in the comment section. I've been teaching history, civics and law for over 20 years now. When you have seen and taught what I have, the boxes get checked.

So luckily I have this here radio show that I can use, until they pry away from my cold, dead hands, to play you the music and share the commentary that you just aren't getting on other radio stations. Even the non-comms like KEXP, KFJC, WFMU, aren't talking openly about the politics of the day. And though Radio Valencia does not endorse a specific political point of view, we allow our DJs to share how they're feeling about the issues of the day. Just offer the disclaimer in there somewhere.

As for the music, it's a fabulous grab bag of funky, punky, junky and political delights.

And thank you all once again for contributing to our first ever "on air" fundraiser. We raised just short of $3000, all of which will go right into operations including a new and improved website coming soonish.

I admit I have a penchant for Punk. My brother-from-another-mother, Oz, The Watermonk of Dah, once told me that I'm both the biggest Deadhead and the biggest Punk fan he knows. I'm flattered, since Oz knows a lot of people who know a lot about music. 

I really love the Grateful Dead, but you wouldn't know that from tuning into my shows. For some reason I just shy away from them. I may need to usurp an open Radio Valencia slot for the sole purpose of playing nothing but live Dead.

Tonight it's all punk. First up is my all-time favorite Lou Reed show on December 26, 1972 at WLIR studios in Hempstead, New York. This is from the "Transformer" tour. There are not enough adjectives to describe the greatness of this show. 

The second hour features DEVO playing the Old Waldorf in San Francisco, November 10, 1978. This was a broadcast on the legendary KSAN-FM. If you were living in the Bay Area in the 70s, then you know how awesome KSAN was. This is the station that started freeform. This is the station that made me want to be a radio DJ. And this DEVO performance is a prime example of a band at the top of their game on the best radio station in the land. This features music from the soon-to-be-released "Duty Now For The Future", their second full length release.

Each November I choose a year that I want to showcase for two hours. It's a random selection. For my tenth annual Annual Annual I have chosen 1980. I turned 10 that year, and was already enjoying a growing record collection I could call my own. We owned a jukebox stocked with 45s from the 60s and 70s, and my dad always enjoyed having music playing throughout the house. My two older sisters (6 and 8 years older) often had the rock hits of the day playing in their rooms or on our family room stereo. 

1980 was a strange year for music. So many subgenres had crept into the aural vernacular by this time. It was no longer just a Jazz, Rock, Soul world. By 1980 Heavy Metal, Funk, Punk, and New Wave had infiltrated the discussion, and there's nothing wrong with that, except commercial radio stations continued to divide us based on their perceived belief that we wanted stations that specialized in one particular genre, and that led to the continuing watering down of quality radio programming.

The former and extremely boring KFOG used to have their daily "10 At 10" show that focused on one year at a time, but rarely, if ever, would they take a chance on some of the artist and genres that I feature on this annual special you see before you.

1980 had a lot of tasty bites to offer however. This show showcases a few commercial tunes (yes, I play the #3 most popular song based on Billboard charts. Sue me), as well as some underground morsels I'm sure you'll enjoy chewing on.

So here we are, four years later, and another election where we tell ourselves "this is the most important election of our lives". And yet I think it is. Let's go into Tuesday with our hopes held high, regardless of the outcome. No matter who wins we have a lot of work to do. Get involved in this great American experiment. Get to have a working knowledge of the US Constitution, as well as your state Constitution. Know who your elected representatives are and hold them accountable, regularly. 

If you're going to be watching the results tonight, please be wary of the "blue mirage". Most mail-in ballots are from Democrats, so it's going to look like Biden is in the lead and will win the state, just to have much of that lead disappear once the election day-cast ballots are counted. 

Take a deep breath, it's going to be a long night.

I'm going to be watching North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin. These are the states that can throw the election from one candidate to the other.

There's more I could say about this (and I have to my students), but you're an adult, and you know we have to be patient.

None of this makes sense. We should have been so over prepared for this pandemic that the course the government took would have been ballyhooed as overblown! But nope, not us. We're like a comic book that no one wanted to read anymore. I blame the TV show 24. Remember that show? That's the show that made torturing to get the confession OK. I am not OK with that. I think ever since that show (which was on FOX by the way), our nation started deeper on a path nationalism.

The terrorists have won.

We are a nation ripped apart and polarized like never before in modern history.

We need music now more than ever. We need music to ground us, and to lift us up. We need music to remind us that it's ok to cry and it's ok to laugh. We need to get lost in the music. It's lustful, and it's spiritual. Music can be your lover or your god. It can be both at once. Allow yourself to fall into it.

We need things to look forward to. I look forward to Monday nights at 8pm when I can share a couple of hours with you away from this sick, sad, crazy world. It won't be this way forever, but while it is, look towards the music and remember that you are alive.

Johnny Cash died 17 years ago. Where has the time gone? I open up show with two sets of the Man in Black. He deserves many hours of celebration. I actually hosted a Cash/Cave show a few years ago that you might enjoy. Check it out here.

Now that the RNC is over we all need a really good cleanse. That's where I come in. Hell is good for what ails ya. Really though, what can I say that the pundits haven't already said about the shit-show that was the RNC week long mouth diarrhea? Blech!

And now comes the race to the finish line. I picture Trump and Biden running through a grocery store, Trump ahead, and throwing items off a shelf to block Biden from catching up. He throws down old ladies, and shopping carts to move farther ahead of Biden. And Biden finds some way to keep the pace. He's not leaping over any of this though. Biden is pushing the old lady aside so he can catch up to Trump. Biden grabs a chilled salmon and slaps Trump in the face before shoving him into the salad bar.

Who will make it to the finish line first? And in what shape will they be in when they arrive there? How many condiments will their pressed suits be covered in?  And will Dr. Jill and Melania be wrestling nearby? What about Mamala and Mothers-Little-Boy?

And what about the rest of us? November 3rd is only a little over nine weeks away. Are you registered? Get registered! Get your ballot, fill it out, and get it in the mail, ASAP! Or maybe drop it off at city hall? Anyway you choose, VOTE as if your life depends on it, because voting is not only patriotic, it's how we remind those who govern, that they only get to do so because we allow them to. Don't let them take that from us.

Back to the music.

Brand new song from my favorite local post-metal-power-trio, KnightressM1. I thought the last release was good (and it is), but "Lock and Key" is blowing my mind!!! These are three amazing musicians playing at the top of their game. The musicianship is professional, the sound is driving and pulsating, and the production is second to none. Damn, I want to see them live!

I was sent a track by my buddy, musician and producer Travis Kaperbauer, featuring himself and a few friends over at Lucky Recording, with a delightful little diddy: "I Fucked A Republican". I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
