Sometimes things come in twos: peanut butter and jelly, baseball and hotdogs, cats and furballs. So it came as no surprise when I had panned to take the night off that I was lured into the studio when I read about Rolling Stone magazine's horrendous Top 100 Punk songs of all time list. 

As for the second treat, you may have read, or seen the flyer posted around San Francisco, looking for a Daniel Lurie look-a-like to star in a porn parody "Let's Blow San Francisco". I was lucky enough to land Don Francisco, the producer, director, writer for this soon to be classic film for an on air interview, talking about the film and where they're at right now in the process.

Daniel Haver, from the Mabuhay Gardens, was in the studio co-hosting with me again tonight. I've really enjoyed Daniel being around. He's really coming into his own on the air. And then Rob from the band The Seagulls came by along with his friend Heather. And to round out the crowd, Jasper, host of Saturday's Broadcast from Limbo added to the mix.

We all had something loud to say about this top 100. Upsetting and confusing was the common call. My theory is the editors for this list looked at regions of punk around the globe (US and Britain that is) and then considered the top acts and albums from those regions. Finally, they combined all of that into one list. 

Lame. All of it, lame. 

Nevermind #9! 

Most of these bands deserve to be on this list. Pretty much all of them shouldn't be in the order they're in (MC5 after Blink 182, who shouldn't be on this list at all!). And where's the first Stooges and VU albums? Where is DRI? MDC? Cromags???

So between the music, the banter, the talk about what makes San Francisco great, this turned into a better choice than to just stay home on a Monday night.

Hot damn, it was cold in the Radio Valencia studio on Monday night. It took a real hot set of music to turn up the heat. I often walk the line of telling it like it is and just getting the heck off the mic so you can enjoy the music. I even have a music bed, performed by the magnificent singer/songwriter Adam MacKintosh, that keeps me honest at about three minutes in length. There's a method to my madness. I need more than three minutes to tell it like it is. 

Each week I go through my record collection searching for whatever is tickling my fancy this week. I'm also listening to a lot of radio (Radio Valencia, KFJC, KALX, KEXP, WFMU, and others as I commute daily). There are so many great DJs turning me on to new music. 

If you're thinking of what to get your loved ones for a gift, I strongly encourage music. No albums in the house? Buy a turntable! Only listening via an app? Get the Bandcamp app and support the artists directly. But let's all agree that cassettes were wrong the first time around (other than mix tapes) and should never make a comeback. This coming from the guy who worked the cassette room at Tower Records, and owned thousands of bootleg tapes. There is nothing redeemable about cassettes. Though there is something to be said about buying an off-brand best of southern rock cassette while on a road trip. 

I do have a few boxes of my airchecks from my many years at KFJC. Those have to be incredibly embarrassing to listen to. There was a show I hosted in 1991 (one of my early graveyard shifts when I was the Reverend Dah Wave), when I was taking call in confessions (I didn't know it was a priest that took confessions, so there ya go). We didn't have a delay at KFJC, so I took a real risk that the callers weren't going to swear. Luckily no one did. And many of the callers were my friends, up late and very imbibed. The great Oz, the Watermonk of Dah (aka Noa Oz Appleton) was in the studio with me. We took a few very hilarious calls. 

Unbeknownst to me, my program director was listening in too. I got a stern talking to (understatement of 1991) and was lucky to keep my shift. I listened back to that aircheck a few years later. It was so cringey that I took the tape out of my car stereo and threw it in the back seat. I wonder where that thing is??? Do I dare listen back? Should I digitize it? Should I share it on Radio Valencia?!?!?!??!

As for this show, I'm as cringey as ever, but I own that now.

All vinyl. Nothing new. Many genres. All worth your time.

I'll be hosting an alternative XMas show on Monday, December 23rd. Tune in and enjoy the hot cocoa on me. Maybe that'll heat up the studio this time around.

And a good Memorial Day to you all. In celebration of all who gave all, let's play two great American acts that we all can agree are worth fighting for. First up, Stevie Wonder in all his glory, live at the Rainbow Theater, January 31, 1974. This is one his all time best shows, and from the Innervisions tour, possibly my favorite album of his. This soundboard recording is taken from the liberated "Funkified Rainbow" bootleg, and really should have been considered for official release.

The second show tonight features an all-American band of rockers who really just don't wanna do much of anything at all. I'm talking about The Ramones!!! This Utica, New York show from November 14, 1977 shows them still in the early days of the balls-to-the-wall punk glory. I've taken this from the "Transmission Impossible" radio broadcast bootleg set. If this was vinyl I would have worn it out ages ago. 

Let's get all-American as we celebrate the women and men in red, white and blue, who gave there all so we can rock and roll.

Each November I choose a year that I want to showcase for two hours. It's a random selection. For my tenth annual Annual Annual I have chosen 1980. I turned 10 that year, and was already enjoying a growing record collection I could call my own. We owned a jukebox stocked with 45s from the 60s and 70s, and my dad always enjoyed having music playing throughout the house. My two older sisters (6 and 8 years older) often had the rock hits of the day playing in their rooms or on our family room stereo. 

1980 was a strange year for music. So many subgenres had crept into the aural vernacular by this time. It was no longer just a Jazz, Rock, Soul world. By 1980 Heavy Metal, Funk, Punk, and New Wave had infiltrated the discussion, and there's nothing wrong with that, except commercial radio stations continued to divide us based on their perceived belief that we wanted stations that specialized in one particular genre, and that led to the continuing watering down of quality radio programming. 

Thank Yahweh for college radio!

The former and extremely boring KFOG used to have their daily "10 At 10" show that focused on one year at a time, but rarely, if ever, would they take a chance on some of the artist and genres that I feature on this annual special you see before you.

1980 had a lot of tasty bites to offer however. This show showcases a few commercial tunes (yes, I play the #3 most popular song based on Billboard charts. Sue me), as well as some underground morsels I'm sure you'll enjoy chewing on.

Hey radio lovers, it's my first official show since December 2019. What I miss?

In all seriousness though, this is a remarkable time. How are you spending your days and nights? Reading those books that have been sitting on the shelf, that you swore you would read if only you had the time to do so? Watching those French Noir films that you once loved in college and realize they haven't aged all that well? Pulling out those dusty puzzle boxes sent to you by grandma when you were 20 (even though you stopped doing puzzles when you were 12)? I actually love a good landscape jigsaw puzzle. How about finally listening to that John Coltrane 45 minute Ascension and the five alternate takes, each 45 minutes to one hour in length? No time like the present.

And the present is all we've got! What would Eckhart Tolle say?

How are tight knit families doing? How is the single-set doing? How are people with horrible roommates doing? How well are you practicing social distancing? FLATTEN THE CURVE OR DIE!

I'm mostly concerned about Tinder. How ever will they survive? Did they get a piece of the stimulus package too? HA! Get it? Tinder? Stimulus? I crack myself up.

On Monday afternoon I put out a call on ye ol' Facebook asking for songs I should play for my triumphant return to Radio Valencia in the pandemic age. The list still hasn't ended. All songs except two are from that list. Thanks a ton!

On a side note, Radio Valencia lost its space last January, after we were told (along with all other tenants) that our landlord had failed to keep up rent payments to the owner. We all were given 48 hours to move out. After a couple of months searching SF for a new space, we finally landed what we believe to be our most ideal studio location yet! And then COVID-19 struck, which is keeping us from setting up the new space. I cannot wait to share details about our new home. It's sooooo exciting.

I have never hosted a show remotely from my home before, so you have heard a lot of reruns from me over the past few months, until Monday night! I'd like to say the show went off without a hitch, but you'll notice the first three minutes is a lot of noise while I scrambled to pay for the Audio Hijack I was using. And later in the show I introduced a Johnny Cash song ("Solitary Man"), which was playing on my laptop, but not on my show. There's a learning curve here, folks. Thanks for sticking with ol' Johnny Hell through all of this.

I would like to thank my brother-from-another-mother Adam McKintosh for donating the Blue Yeti microphone to the cause. Some heroes don't wear capes.

Also, not all songs are from the FB request list. Local violinist, vocalist, and all-around exceptional musician Emily Palen sent me a couple of new tracks from her trio: KnightressM1. I was thrilled to pieces to play "SALT", from their upcoming release, TBA. Check them out live, whenever and wherever that happens in the (hopefully) near future. I love getting turned on...to good new music, and this group really sent me into the stratosphere. I hope you enjoy the track as much as I do. And dig the "lyrics". Perfect timing indeed. It really fit with the show's theme.

First live show for the new year and of course it's a tribute. Duh! Michael "The Professor" Shannon, co-host of Sex Cels (10-midnight Monday's on RV) passed away last month after a long bout with melanoma. I cannot say enough great things about The Professor. My regular interactions with him came during our weekly show transitions. Michael would start Sex Cels each week with a three-song opening theme. He would have me guess the theme and try to stump me. More often than not I would guess correctly. I am a walking musical encyclopedia after all. ;)~ He was a devout atheist and would proudly wear that on his sleeve. He was also a serious Star Wars fanatic. I still liked him though. I can't imagine being in the studio without his smiling face to greet me before taking over the board. Night night, Michael.






Another punch in the gut came a few weeks back when I heard about the passing of another friend, musical stalwart and jack of all musical trades, Ralph Carney. Ralph passed away following a fall down his stairs in his home in Portland, Oregon. He lived in the Bernal Heights neighborhood of San Francisco for many years, where he was known lovingly as the Mayor of Bernal. Ralph was often found sitting in with local bands throughout the week at clubs like Amnesia or Club Deluxe. He had recorded sessions possibly numbering in the thousands with bands such as the B52s, Elvis Costello, Les Claypool, Stan Ridgeway, and of course Tom Waits, who he spent about 15 years with. Ralph was such a cornball. His personality really shone through his music. Listening to him it made sense that his music was just an extension of his personality. He was like a walking cartoon character; very rubbery. The final twenty minutes of my show is a tribute to Ralph. Another great has left the building. Ralph-a-Palooza will be held on Thursday February 1st, 8PM-2AM, at SF Eagle. Performers include Robin Coomer, Gaucho, The Extra Action Marching Band, The Cottontails, Allison Lovejoy, Griddle, and many more special surprises (no Tom Waits will probably not be one of those surprises).

I purchased my first bootleg, via cassette from a street vender on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, way back in 1983. It was a Grateful Dead show (obviously) from their 1981 European tour. Specifically, it was the Copenhagen, Denmark show from October 8, 1981. It was the second set only, and an audience recording. I didn't care. I was so excited. I was just shy of 13 years old, and I knew that I was in possession of some serious contraband. It thrilled me. My heart was racing. I had to hide it away. I didn't want to get busted holding something that I knew I wasn't supposed to have.

Looking back on that, it's so sweet I thought that way.

Shortly after that I began to hear tales of a store near my San Mateo home, in Burlingame, "The Record Man", who had a three ring binder full of shows, called "the bible", that he would pull out to show you if you asked nicely. I can picture him to this very day. I bought the brilliant June 18, 1975 Pink Floyd show from Boston Garden. This is an audience copy as well, but the quality far surpassed the 81 Dead show I had. This Floyd show had early versions of Sheep and Dogs, with their original titles "You've Got to be Crazy", and "Raving and Drooling", respectively. I was floored. By now I was totally and completely obsessed. I knew that I couldn't keep spending money on boots, since I didn't have a lot to begin with, having no job at 14. I had to think of other ways to find this golden booty.

I download an average of 12 shows a week these days. This year I've taken to featuring many of these shows during my second hour, but tonight I thought I'd take both hours to share what I've found recently. Sometimes two hours just is not enough! It's a mix from rock and blues, to jazz and reggae. There's some Americana and psych thrown in for good measure. As always I put the date and location for your edification.

In a few months I'm hoping to host another Rock Fight, where I go up against another bootleg collector and beat them to a pulp (aurally speaking that is) for about four hours. This time around, sound engineer John Karr will be joining me. Look towards the month of June for this show. I'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, sit back, put on the headphones, close your eyes, and let me take you to many venues and many nights of live musical magic.
