Hell's Kitchen Radio #603: No, You're Stunning!

So much has changed in the past few weeks, that I think it's creeping into the music I play for you. You can't tell? Then you aren't paying attention.

We put on such a fine show at the FabMab and On Broadway on February 28th, I'm still floating above the floor. And I think about what Bowie said about doing your art: don't get too comfortable, and don't do it for the listeners; it'll compromise you.

How true.

There are many weeks, in the middle of my show, when I'm playing something with a sweet groove, that I think about playing a 15 minute long, dissonant track, but I often hold back, not wanting to alienate my audience. What's that about? I come from a long history of left-of-the-dial DJs who pride themselves on pushing the limits. I've written before about the two schools I carried on with at the mythic KFJC: always play something "accessible", versus "fuck 'em if they don't like it".

I've tried to walk the line in the middle over the years, but I'll admit I err on the side of the former a wee bit too often.

I need to recommit to pushing the sound in the direction that always brings me the most joy. This is not a selfish act. This is why you tune in. I take requests about .05% of the time, so it's not like I'm abandoning you.

Tonight was good ol' quality music that I tapped my toes along to the whole show.

I've got music spanning seven decades...or is it eight?

This Monday night Daniel Haver of Mabuhay Gardens is joining me to guest DJ. He has a $1000 7"-45 he's threatening to bring in. I may need to change the needles.

We have an exciting show Radio Valencia is co-presenting, and yours truly is producing on June 13th. Set your calendars. You do not want to miss this!

Enjoy and please share.

This show was great fun to produce. I've got a trainee, Annika, in the studio with me and she put together a few really great sets (marked with "AD"). Her taste in international sounds is inspiring to say the least!

We've got a live fundraiser happening Sunday, October 19th, 1-6PM at GRNHS Gallery, 864 Folsom Street (b/w 5th and 6th). We've got three amazing bands, including Janky Band, Rustangs, and Fantasy!!! We also have been from 21st Amendment and non-alcohol for those who desire such. We'll also have some Radio Valencia shirts available.

We couldn't be more excited about this show. We love this gallery space, and these three bands are all known for bringing the heat.

This fundraiser is part rent party, part get the damn website and apps updated!!!

Please come down, or consider donating to our GoFundMe.

See you at the show.

If I've said it once, I've said it a three or maybe four times: radio is the art of the segue. You don't need to listen to a work I say on this show, but you do need to listen to these sets of tunes. Hot damn these are some fine songs I have for you tonight.

New music from Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Kevin Abstract, Population II, and Slift. There's a lot of psych and dark-psych throughout, and it really moves through you. I enjoyed the hell outta bringing you this show.

I don't do a lot of pre-planning when it comes to my sets. I generally just grab a bunch of vinyl and my external hard drive and head to the station. Once I get there i take a look at what I brought with me, and choose my first song that is to represent "the sounds of Hell". That's always a hoot.

I think it was this first set that really got my engine revving.

Take a look at the play list below and click on the link to listen to the show.

Enjoy and please share...and go support live, local bands!

Sometimes when I'm hosting my show in the studio it actually feels like you are right there with me. I feel like I'm talking directly to you! I see you on the couch across from the console, watching me watching you, and I get excited to share my music with you, right then, right there.

That's how it felt on Monday night.

Starting off with the some contemporary genius' of the garage/punk world: Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall, both live from The Chapel in SF. These two tracks, back-to-back show you me current mood: kinetic and frenetic. I've got a lot of energy to shed and share.

Throughout the night it's a mix of old and new, punk, funk and junk. You know, just as always. And only two cover tunes this week!

I was considering hosting a power trio special, but I want to take a few more weeks to prepare. Stay tuned. I'm also reminded that November is coming, which means my 8th annual Annual Annual is right around the corner. Which year should I focus on this time around. If you want to see my previous Annual Annual shows take a look here. Scroll down that page and find the links you seek.

In the meantime I'm just going to relax and picture you on the couch in front of the console doing lovely and nasty things to yourself as I play DJ.

Enjoy.

Having spent almost 30 years in community radio, I've seen plenty of fresh young faces cross into the medium, where I have been asked to train them in the technical aspects of running the board, as well as how to announce during a mic break. There is an art to this. There is a flow. More often than not I am in the flow. I certainly know when I'm not. I tell the new DJ when it comes to the mic break, just do the business (back announce what you played, read a PSA, front announce and get off mic). Once you have more time in the studio under  your belt, then you can wax poetic about the artist you just played and the label they are on, and connect it to some current issue, or talk about the band that's coming to town and the place they're playing and some history connected to the label you're about to play. All of this takes time and experience.

I trained a new DJ on my recent show: Johnny Fuzz; no relation. His set is labeled below. Great guy, great choices. He'll be getting a show soon, so please show him some love and tune in.

My next show is pretty timely. I call it "Statutory Rock"! You can only guess what I'll be playing.

Finally, send some healing thoughts to Hell's Kitchen Radio alum, and legendary rock poster artist, Ron "Rotten Ronnie" Donovan. He's in the hospital with lived failure after living the life of a rock start, too hard, for too long. We love you Rotten Ronnie. Don't make me host a tribute to you any time soon.

Check out the playlist below and click the stream or download button above to enjoy this great show. There's some kind of tribute??? to Charles Manson at the beginning.

Enjoy.

Lauson spent the night in Hell's Kitchen this past Monday night and was more than her usual kooky self. Little Lauson Hell is about to enter 8th grade and I'm not really certain how I feel about all this growing up stuff. She knows that when it comes to the playlist to make make her choices a wee bit more left of maintstream. That being said, she's her father's daughter: she just knows what she likes. Almost all of her selections (designated by "L") are fairly outside the norm of what a 12 year old probably listens to. Does your kid flip for Nina Simone?

Some new music from Ty Segall from an oddly digital-only release (where's the vinyl, Ty?), and Dale Crover has graced us with what he claims is his first full-length solo effort, Fickle Finger of Fate, but I consider the classic Kiss-style Melvins solo EP of his to be his real first solo release. Whatever. Speaking of the Melvins, their documentary, Colossus of Destiny is now out on DVD and Blu-Ray and we're all better for it. I saw the film at a s showing at the Swedish-American Hall in SF last Fall and the boys performed an acoustic set and did a Q&A following the film. It's chock full of great interviews and music. Check it out!

I've got way too much music to share with you this coming Monday night. Two hours really isn't enough time, but it'll have to do. See you on the "radio".

Like my father says "it's always something". And isn't that the truth. Last Monday was MLK Day, and then we had that underwhelming inauguration on Friday. How was your week? How are we going to love and support one another? Do I have a responsibility to make my show more political, or do you just want music and interviews? I'm curious about your thoughts on this one.

As always a mixed bag of what I was into last week. The first hour is a tribute to MLK. I'm sticking with my commitment to play more from my live archive during the second hour. I always tack on the date and location for these tracks. New music from Charles Moothart (CFM), The Blind Shake, and Dead Ending (with a new anti-Trump tune).

If anything good comes out of this new presidency I'm guessing it'll be the onslaught of great punk tunes.

If you wish to contribute to my annual Run for the Lilies contest, you have until Sunday, January 29th to get me your list. Just email me the names of ten famous people you believe won't be alive by the end of this calendar year. The only rule: you may NOT participate in their demise. I'll announce the winner of the 2016 Run for the Lilies on Monday, January 30th.

A Season in Hell #156: Best of 2013

It's that time of year when the sun goes down earlier, the air gets a bit chillier, and DJs from around the world try to claim that they have what is the absolute BEST music of the year to share with you.

Well they don't. They're all suckers. But I do!!!

My Best of 2013 is perhaps my best BEST OF show in all of my 25 years in radio. Really. Would I lie?

I'm listening to new music all of the time. There are times that I'm looking at my music library, and I wonder just when I'll listen to any of that "old" music again? And when I say old, I mean from last month. There just aren't enough hours in the day. Am I right? I can't wait until I'm too old to do anything by listen to my music. Then I'll hire some hot nurse who'll have to bathe me and put records on my turntable. That's the life.

In the meantime enjoy this collection of fine tunes from 2013. We've got many local talented groups that deserve your attention like Thee Oh Sees, Rin Tin Tiger, Y Axes, Vandella, Mikal Cronin, KalriSSian, Bears! Bears! Bears!, and my favorite "local" band, The Melvins.

Two hours is just not enough time to play all of my faves from 2013. I suggest you tune into Radio Valencia throughout December to check out the many "Best of" shows that are going to cover the airwaves like a warm that sticky film of fat that covers the turkey the day following a good feast...or something like that.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #149: Take A Chance On Me

Excellent show through and through. Each set was a winner. I think you'll really enjoy this one. Get ready to really dance in the second hour.

I think it's shows like this one that really show my range as a DJ. You've got your indie, your punk, funk, international, rap. It's got pretty much everything that your commercial radio dreck would never dare approach.

I wish more people would lobby commercial radio stations and request music like you hear on this show. I do. Make that happen. Let me know how they respond. I can probably guess, but let's take a shot at it anyway.

Enjoy and annoy.

OK, I suck. I haven't shared shows of mine in over a month. What the hell is wrong with me? Oh yeah, I was planning my wedding. I really had no time. Please forgive me.

I haven't listened back to this show, but the set list looks AMAZING!!! The first hour is full of some great new music, and the second hour some classics, including a live cut from the recent Black Sabbath show. I also play a very slowed down Wanda Jackson tune. It's CRAZY!

A Season in Hell #115: Best of 2012

Well, here we go again. Can you believe it's already been a year?!?!

There was so much great music this past year. I have to admit, I really love this particular show. Every year I get to showcase what I believe to be the best music of the year, and this year there are some choice cuts to choose from.

If you listen to my show regularly, then you know that I jump around from genre to genre. Tonight my show features a lot of pop, some metal, some psych. There's no jazz or hip-hop in my list for tonight. That doesn't mean there weren't some fabulous tracks out there, just that none of them really struck my fancy enough to feature them in my Best of 2012. Don't be a hater. There will be plenty of hip hop and jazz in upcoming shows.

In the meantime, enjoy the show, and spread it around, and for God's sake, go buy some of this great music, and support live, local music every chance you get!

You can download this Best of, and take it with you everywhere you go.
You can stream this awe-inspiring showcase, and play it for your friends at work.
Perhaps you wish to listen to all of my shows, click here, or just scroll down.

As always, enjoy.

A Season in Hell #105: John Hell is a Ladies Man

It's that time of year again in San Francisco. The tourists have gone home and our summer is in full swing. Damn, it was hit in SF the past few days. Whew. I'm sweatin' it too. Not that I'm complaining, really. Living in the fog, we don't really get to feel the heat like the rest of the country, so if we get a week or so of 85 degrees, then I guess I'll just have to deal with it.

I'll be honest with you, I'll never complain about the fog again, knowing about the triple digits in the rest of the country. Don't be a hater.

Speaking about being hot under the collar, it's election season again. Tonight on my show I hosted Ken Tray, Political Director of United Educators of San Francisco. I've hosted Ken a number of times over the years to talk with him about local and state propositions,  and school board candidates. Head over to their site to see who they're endorsing for the upcoming school board election.

Tonight we spoke about two very important state props, 30 and 32. If you don't know what's up just listen to me: Yes on 30, No on 32. That's all you need to know. Ok, ok, if you really need to know more follow the links to get educated.

Music-wise, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is coming up in SF this weekend. Music breaks during the interview and much of the second hour features artists who will be playing this weekend at the event. I also have some Laurel Canyon sounds in there for good measure.

A Season in Hell #96: I'll Skin You Alive

I AM NOT A LIAR! That being said, this is one fine show. When is the last time you listened to radio as a piece of art? Really, when? Radio is supposed to be a place where the DJ takes his or her VAST knowledge of musical history, and weaves it together to tell a story in a 2-4 hour period. At Radio Valencia we do it in two hour bites.

You're lucky, we don't rehash the same old crap that the commercial stations love to force down your throat. Nope, not here. At Radio Valencia we carefully craft shows that are thick and robust in flavor. Our shows you can take with you, and visit when nights are lonely.

Come on, take John Hell to bed. You know you want to.

If you would care to listen to my deep, velvety voice in bed, click here.

A Season in Hell #93: You Blew It

After last weeks' Rock Fight 8 I really had to have an easy come down with some studio cuts. This week features some absolutely unbelievable new sounds from some great groups you've probably haven't heard of. The second hour features some very young soulful women, an African Queen, the Godfather of Soul, The Psych Kings of the UK, and much, MUCH more!

Also, I was visited by some of my former students tonight. When I teach I don't tell them about my current radio station. I wait until they've graduated before I bring up the more stylized side of me. It was great to hear about their college exploits and connect with them on another level.

They caught a really great show. Indeed, the segues are tight, the grooves are seamless, and the selection is tip top notch.

Enjoy.
