Chip Kinman of The Dils and Rank and File talk about his new self-titled album out on In The Red Records, and his colorful history in the punk scene. What a blast it was to talk to him about the scene, going back to his earliest days with him and his late brother Tony.

The Chip Kinman Band has a show at Bottom of the Hill, on Friday, May 29th. I cannot wait to get to this show. I hope to see you there.

Well, it's just you and little ol' me, until Daniel comes by. Daniel is always welcome to come by. So are you! Why don't you write?

Anyway, I didn't have anyone scheduled to come by Monday night. This is first in a while, where I have no guests. I have Lee Hoffman of Elegant Trash coming by next Monday night, May 11, to talk about his Punk the Bay shows he's promoting Wednesday nights at the FabMab. 

On this show I was just feeling good sharing some new music I picked up in the past few weeks: Clown Alley, Sprints, Bill Orcutt, The Freak Accident, Alice Bag, OSees, Surprise Privilege, White Fence, Hawkwind, FUZZ, Reatards, Flipper, Deviants...

You know what, most of this show is music I bought over the past month or so. 

I may have a problem. I bought two records today that are certain to get played here soon enough. And why not? 

I was at a memorial for Robert "Doc" Pelzel, of KFJC, on Saturday. A good 100 family, friends, and current and former station staff were present. It was a real pleasure to see these fine folks and share stories about Doc.

Doc was the station advisor, who officially worked for Foothill Junior College, where KFJC is located. He was a true advocate for the station, and kept the institution administration off our backs, and made sure we received our budget every year. He came to KFJC in 1979, following a stint at KALX in Berkeley. I arrived at KFJC in 1989.

Doc encouraged us all to be as weird as we wanted to be. Take risks. He was similar to my dad, who used to say "there's no reward without risk". I learned what it meant to take my dream of being a radio DJ, and push it to the ultimate limit. I co-produced a nationwide broadcast at over 20 stations, from SXSW in 1994 because of Doc. I co-founded Radio Free Burning Man, also in 1994, because of Doc. 

Hundreds of incredible DJs have gone through the KFJC doors, and each of us benefitted from having Doc there, giving us an infinitely long, transparent leash, where we were encouraged to freak the scene in the way that non-commercial radio is supposed to do. 

The listeners benefitted from hearing music that never would have reached their ears if it weren't for the DJs given the freedom to do so. 

Bands wouldn't have sent us the music they were inspired to play if we didn't have the DJs excited to play the next new sound. 

As a teacher I understand that we teach infinity. We never know where our teaching ends. It's safe to say that Doc advised us to infinity. We play music for you that you take and pass on. Maybe you started a band because of what we played? And some of us went on to start other radio stations, paying it forward!

I think Doc is proud. I know he is, because were told one of the last things he said was that he was sad that he couldn't keep engaging in all this fun.

We'll pay the fun forward, Doc. Always pay it forward.

Someone told me the other day they really don't have any time to listen to music, and there's nothing worth listening to anyhow. I cried. Is this true for some people? For you? I can't imagine life without music. And honestly, as much as I enjoy the "classics" of my youth, including a few go-to bands, at least 50% of my music listening is music from the past couple of years, and always looking to get turned onto some fresh new artist or release. 

How is this not more common? Do you not have the time? Are you stuck in what you were listening to in high school? I guess it's more common than I thought. If that's you then I really encourage you to tune into my show Monday's 8-10PM PDST, where I mix it up by era and genre. Take a look at my playlist below and you'll see everything from proto-punk, dub, 60s-psychedelic, boogie-woogie blues, stoney rock, and much much more. 

One thing I will always love about Radio Valencia and stations like ours, is the risk our DJs take in pushing past the edges of what is acceptable to the commercial radio programmers. We will never insult you. We yearn to turn you on.

There once was a time when my daughter looked at me like I was a hero. Now she's 13. Oh well, at least she allowed me to drag her kicking and screaming out of her lair (read: bedroom) to join me in the studio on this fine night. It only took me bribing her with a burrito to make this happen. There was a time when she couldn't wait to co-host a radio show with me. I guess we all grow up eventually, right? RIGHT?

To my credit, she did acknowledge all on her own, that it's pretty cool that she's had this opportunity to be on the radio with me over the years None of her other friends have ever done this before. So there!

Lauson's musical tastes have grown beyond my tastes, as I'm sure mine did when I was her age. If I recall 13 correctly, I was starting to purchase music on my own on a monthly basis; much of which my father hadn't ever listened to. So it comes as no surprise that she's delving deeper into her own interests. And it's those interests that I encouraged her to share on the show tonight.

Interestingly enough, not only is she into hiphop, but she loves Sinatra and Stevie Wonder, and is discovering more classic soul and funk based on the samples used in contemporary hiphop. We talk about this on the air. It reminds me of how I got deeper into blues, using 60s bands like the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton as a springboard to discover the originals, which I ended up enjoying more than the covers.

The banter is witty, the music is groovy. The talk about attending concerts, in the second hour, is classic! Much of the music is vocalist-centered as you can see by the playlist below. New music by Ty Segall and White Fence.

A Season in Hell #93: You Blew It

After last weeks' Rock Fight 8 I really had to have an easy come down with some studio cuts. This week features some absolutely unbelievable new sounds from some great groups you've probably haven't heard of. The second hour features some very young soulful women, an African Queen, the Godfather of Soul, The Psych Kings of the UK, and much, MUCH more!

Also, I was visited by some of my former students tonight. When I teach I don't tell them about my current radio station. I wait until they've graduated before I bring up the more stylized side of me. It was great to hear about their college exploits and connect with them on another level.

They caught a really great show. Indeed, the segues are tight, the grooves are seamless, and the selection is tip top notch.

This Sunday, July 1st, Radio Valencia will be broadcasting live from in front of Stage Werx for Sunday Streets. This is one of the best community events SF has ever had. They're closing down Valencia Street from 14th to 24th, and 24th all the way down to around Harrison. We'll be broadcasting from 11-4pm that day. A Season in Hell #89: Disco is Dead!

I know that Donna Summer and the Gibb fella died this past week, but I really just cannot find myself paying tribute to them on my show. It's not that I don't appreciate their music, it's more like, well, er, um...I don't really know how to end that.

Anyway, here we go. Lot's of new psychedelic pop and sludge in the first hour. The second hour will feature week 7 of 8 in my celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Grateful Dead's Europe 72 tour.

Tonight I feature just a taste of May 13th, 1972, as I really want to plunge deep into May 16th. WOW! The Truckin'->Other One is blistering. They rock it out, and then just get seriously lost in space during the Other One. The jam that comes out of space is worth the price of admission alone. I close out with some fine songs from May 18th.

Next Monday night is my last Europe 72 show. Whew, that was long and jammy.
