Sometimes my favorite shows are the ones where the completely unexpected transpires. Lauson (that's my fabulous daughter, as if you didn't know) asked me to drive her to pick up some clothes from a friend of hers, and then drop her at BART. It didn't take much to talk her into joining me in the studio for me show.

And that was only the beginning of the fun! 

Soon enough Daniel, from the Mab was in. And then here came Ignacio and Jasper. Then David Fraser, who hosts Escape Velocity on Mondays, noon-2pm, came by to talk about a new show idea. And with all this I had to train a returning RV DJ, Bunnywhiskers, who now goes by the name Fly Faced Necronomicones, and is hosting Wednesdays noon - 2pm

It got a bit busy in the studio Monday night.

But this didn't keep me from bringing you the music you depend on week by week.

Just look at these tunes! I mean really now, where else are you going to get a mess like this? I ask you, WHERE!?!?!

There's a lot of great goings-on at Radio Valencia these days. Some great shows, with incredible hosts, showing what they've got two hours at a time. That's not nearly enough time to showcase all of what we've got, but there ya go.

Radio is seduction. I like seduction. it just feels good. And who doesn't like to feel good. And this here show just keeps getting hotter and hotter until it climaxes in just the perfect way at just the perfect moment. And like any good seduction, there are twists and turns, a pull back here and there, a tease, a touch, a tickle. And throughout there are hints at what's to come. 

Not go give anything away, but I should have worn gloves. 

Every time I have Daniel from the FabMab into the studio I'm afraid the turntables are going to catch on fire. The banter, the wit, the inside jokes! All of it is worth it when you get to hear what we both brought in for your pleasure to night.

The anticipation is just killing me.

I missed you all last week when I saw Melvins and Napalm Death at Great American Music Hall. How much fun was that? I think we both know the answer to that one. And to top it off, Jello Biafra joined in the fun singing Nazi Punks Fuck Off and ended the song with a stage dive. Good God, Man, people had to carry you. You practically took someone's head off.

Great show though. 

This was an inspired show. There's a flow in the musical sets. Just take a look for yourself. Do you see it? You see it, right? You see it? 

Paying some love to Amyl and the Sniffers to start out. I took the fabulous Lauson Hell to see them last week at The Fox Theater. There's some new Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. You do have your tickets to the show at the Bill Graham Civic in May, right?

Can I confide in you? I'll have to wait until you leave a comment or something. 

I'll wait.

In the meantime, there's some spaghetti westers, jazz flute, misogynist funk, obscure SF punk, not-so-obscure SF punk. Then I moved the punk down the coast and eventually across the pond. Do we still say that? I end with some Linda Lindas because they ROCK!

This is one of those times when I really count my blessings. Everyone has their struggles, so don't let me start getting into my own. Does any of it really matter? No. None of it matters. Holding a grudge does nothing but take the time away from having a really good time. And isn't that what we want: to have a really good time?

Why suffer? What does it bring? What have we gained by our own suffering? Experience? Isn't there any other way to grow? I've learned more lessons than blah, blah, blah. Is this what life is all about: learning lessons so as not to repeat the same mistakes over and over again? What if I learned a lesson, put in my best effort, asked all the right questions, opened myself up to scrutiny and vulnerability, articulated my boundaries, and still tripped?!

What then?

Throw it all away? Remain alone for the sake of caring for my heart? Risk appearing aloof or uncaring just so I don't have to clean up a mess that I worked diligently to avoid happen in the first place? We're not a solitary species? But what's so bad about being alone? I have my music to keep my warm. Even the kids grow up to live their own lives.

Enjoy the moment. That's all we have. Meditate on that. You can do your best to make up for the past. Take accountability even when it feels impossible. Make amends. Speak your truth with the most compassionate head and heart. Be the best listener. Ask the deeper questions. Be vulnerable and available for the criticisms that will come your way (and they will come!).

Prepare for the future, knowing as hard as you do, life has a way of throwing a lot of curveballs at you. Be calm through the storm. Flow like water. Respond, don't react. Breathe. Always breathe. And know that everyone else is going through the shit too.

All we have in now. It's only now. It's always now. Bring your best now. Now. And do not beat yourself up if the best you have now is not the same as what others are bringing. Never compare yourself to others, ever. You'll lose that battle. So don't do it. Rise above that. You're not rising above others, you're rising above the idea that others are above you. No one is above anyone else. We're all treading water in our own way. Our job is to do it as calmly as possible. Don't fight the waves. Don't fight the tide.

Flow like water.

Forgive.

Love.

Be. Here. Now.

And listen to good music.

Monday night was a real treat. I was in the mood classic American Blues from the early 20th century; the roots of Rock and Roll. I also have a number of 2022 reissues including Miles Davis, Kiss, David Bowie, The Beatles, and Michael Jackson! I don't think I've ever played Kiss or Michael Jackson on my show. There's even a brand "new" release from The Doors!

And the funny thing about Kiss, is they were my first favorite band. When I was about seven years old my family was living in Greensboro, North Carolina. My father's job took him from my birthplace of Toledo, Ohio down to the south. My aunt came to visit. She had been working at a popular record store, Peaches, and brought gifts! She brought me the first four Kiss studio albums and Kiss Alive II. I was hooked. This was in late 1977 or early 1978. It wasn't long until I joined the Kiss Army, replete with fanzines, posters, stickers and more! I wish I still had all of that stuff. Thanks mom. 

I even dressed as Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley for a few consecutive Halloweens. My sister, Tracy Hell, was kind enough to adorn me with the makeup. Thanks Tray!

And then I discovered The Beatles. At the tender age of ten I thought you were only allowed to have one favorite band. So long Kiss. 

Next Monday, December 5th is my 12th annual Annual Annual. I choose one year to feature and have a Hell of a lot of fun doing so. Which year will I pick? What songs will I play? Tune in Monday 8-10PM Pacific to find out.

Every year leading up to my Annual Annual, I suffer and strain to decide on a year I want to focus on. This year was no different. Do I want to reach back pre-1970? How about something a little more recent, like the lost year of 2020? I asked for suggestions, and a bunch flew my way, but the one that really stuck came from my buddy, and teaching colleague, Eric, who suggested 1978. The emergence of English post-punk, metal was evolving, funk was redefining itself against a backdrop of too much disco. There is a lot to choose from when it comes to 1978.

I took at least a week to pour over my options. In the end I sat with approximately four hours of music to fit into about an hour forty minutes, mixed with talk and highlights from the year. I tried to mix it up, and keep you on your toes. I really appreciate all of the many comments that kept coming during the show, and I'm sorry I didn't take any requests. Shows like these are pretty well mapped out by the time I flip the switch.

Music and mayhem for two hours. You're good with that, right? I really had no chance, btw. I have to keep up appearances. I really listen to Helen Reddy and Montovani at home. You knew that though. You're smart like that. I'm boring as all get out. Dad jokes a-plenty! I plug my ears through all this music you hear during my show. Blech. Who needs it? amiright?????

And then there's the guests! Sheesh! Who the Hell wants to talk to people? I really just want to sink into my comfy couch, eat some bon-bons and watch train videos on YouTube. 

First hour is some stuff, follower by things. Ha! New music from Red Fang, Toshi Kasai and Daddy Longhead. Such goodness coming from these artists. I'm looking forward to interviewing producer, engineer, electronics wiz Toshi Kasai in the upcoming weeks.

Second hour brings a visit from the one and only Mike Dingle of the 3rd Thursday Band, and Marlon Kasberg of KFJC (I won't share his airname, but you will know him when you hear him). They stopped in to talk up this weekend hullabaloo happening at Winters Tavern in Pacific, Saturday and Sunday, featuring a tribute to the late. great rock/punk saxophonist Steve Mackay. The interview was fun and way too much roommate radio, but silly nonetheless. 

There's also some great music featuring Steve Mackay late in the second hour.

If you really want to give a listen to what a bunch of idiots who have known one another for 20+ years in and around the music and radio history, forgetting that they're on the radio, and ignoring the listeners, then you really want to give this a lesson. To be honest though, Marlon and I did our best to keep Dingle on point, and talking directly into the microphone. I love that guy.

The love that is supposed to continue to grow once the romantic love that was never ever going to fade because they love me more than anything ever, and they are constantly turned on by me, excited to hear about every little mundane moment of my mundane day as if I just survived 30 days in the Outback (not restaurant, but then again that too sounds like torture) and come back to tell the tale. The love that says "put the toilet seat down", but what they really mean is "I love you from the bottom of my heart, but if you leave that toilet seat up one more time, then you are not ever getting any more of this (at which point they're just pointing to their genitals)".

How many break-ups have your survived just to tell yourself that the next relationship is going to be the ONE?!?!? Have you begun to realize that it really is about the merging of two people who are totally turned on by the other for a finite amount of time, but given the chance may be able to evolve this deep friendship (please be best friends with this person, really) into a partnership that can survive the day-to-day "please put the dishes in the dishwasher" existence that requires you to set aside your ego.

And that's it really, we need to leave our ego at the door. And we need to be a HUGE cheerleader for our partner. That's what we want from them even if we don't say it out loud.

So love is HELL. It's hot, and it's cumbersome at times, and it's loud, and it's unruly, but out the other side can be something truly wonderful. Climb out of your fairytale and into the reality what love can really be. Oh, and listen to my show while having hot sex. Why not? Couldn't hurt.

Sometimes I interview heroes of mine, and sometimes there are musical heroes in the room and I have no idea I'm talking to them. That happened once, back in 1993, while I was standing in Waterloo Records in Austin, while I was thumbing through a record stack and came upon the "Sid and Nancy" soundtrack. A woman standing next to me saw the record and commented about a movie she saw the previous night on her hotel room TV, staring the woman who co-starred in "Sid and Nancy", Chloe Webb. Coincidentally I was watching the same movie in my hotel room. The conversation moved on to other great films, then music, then authors. Then she said goodbye. This was about a 10 minute conversation, at the most. Pleasant. Short-lived. Soon after she walked away, the store manager, or owner announces to the room "ladies and gentleman, we're so lucky to have with us, reading from her new book of poetry, the seminal punk goddess, Exene Cervenka. Give me a break. Really? That's who I was talking to? One of my musical heroes, form one of my favorite bands of my youth? Really? Yeah, I'm sure she was thrilled that I wasn't being all eye-lash-batty to her, and fawning over her every word, and agreeing about how amazing some director and author is, but COME ONE.

If you tune into my show on any semi-regular basis, and I have a guest on with me, you've probably noticed that I have some clue as to who they are. I do my homework, after all. On last Monday's show, I had a lot of homework to do, and it would appear, that I missed some assignment. D'oh indeed.

The 40th Anniversary Punk Renaissance showcase begins tonight, and runs for the next week, so I had some old-time punk-rockers from the Punk Rock Sewing Circle in the studio to talk up the onslaught that is about to be hoisted upon us.

Raymond Ernest Andre III (Flame); Ripper Sisters Linda Walker ("Gale Force" of Ripper Magazine), and Verna Wilson ("Violet Vamp"); Michael Reid (booker of the Mabuhay Gardens, and co-founder of Reckless Records); Bob Clic (from The Lewd); Ethan Port (from Savage Republic); Eugene (from Oxbow (who I had no idea was going to be in the studio, and therefore had no clue who the hell he was, EVEN THOUGH I am not only a fan of Oxbow, but I had the good fortune to MC a show at least 20 years ago at the Cubberley Community Theater in Palo Alto, where they headlined. That may have been the last time I saw them too)).

I can't do this as much justice as my friend Silke Tudor can, so I'm just going to let her words describe the mayhem that starts tonight and runs for the next week.

We don’t know how they pulled this off, but we love Punk Rock Sewing Circle. What began as a string of remembrances on the Mabuhay Gardens Facebook page has transformed into a 40-year anniversary celebration. SF Punk Renaissance: Final Warning! is a weeklong festival that draw doyennes of the underground back to this city where punks could pogo with the deaf, live in a treehouse, perform with live chickens, and survive on SSI. The festival kicks off with an all-ages East Bay sonic survey including members of the seminal Psychotic Pineapple and Dr. Frank. The rest unfolds with must-see photography exhibits; a swap meet for records, ‘zines, flyers, and other memorabilia; panel discussions on early zines, the queer/punk node, and where it all went wrong; educational walking tours of the Mission, North Beach, and SOMA; and of course more music than you can shake your trick leg at: Avengers, The Lewd, The Mutants, Frightwig, Toiling Midgets, and Negative Trend, to name a few.

This was one GREAT show. Six hours of blistering live performances, and two amazing interviews. For the past 13 Rock Fights, poster artist Ron Donovan has joined me in the studio. Due to unforeseen (but predicted) circumstances, Ron was unable to join me tonight. It didn't matter though, I would have kicked his ass up and down the airwaves like I do every Rock Fight.

I open the show with some great 60s jams. Just look at the playlist! It's rock and psych, leading into proto-punk in the second hour. 70s punk takes over the rest of the hour, before author Linda Kelly comes in to talk up the new edition of her 1995 book "Deadheads", just in time for the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary shows (which I'll be attending in Santa Clara this weekend). You have got to read this book! So many great stories. My interview with Linda is a ton of fun. We played about 90 minutes of brilliant live Dead, from the 67-92. She'll be in the parking lot selling and signing books all weekend long. And she'll be at Proper Fox jewelry store tonight signing and selling.

Local singer-songwriter Travis Hayes came by to talk up his upcoming show, this Saturday night at the Great American Music Hall. He played a few tunes, live in the studio, and shared some stories. What a great guy. Go to this show, and support live, local music.

I finished up the show with some classic rock standouts!!! Led Zeppelin, Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, and more.

I love hosting this show, but six hours is exhausting. And having no co-host just will not do. This December, sound engineer John Karr will be co-hosting Rock Fight 15 with me. John has been doing live and studio sound for over 25 years, and has recorded thousands of great local shows. I look forward to kicking his ass. Tune in.
