Hell's Kitchen Radio #614: Too Many Cooks

Sometimes my favorite shows are the ones where the completely unexpected transpires. Lauson (that's my fabulous daughter, as if you didn't know) asked me to drive her to pick up some clothes from a friend of hers, and then drop her at BART. It didn't take much to talk her into joining me in the studio for me show.

And that was only the beginning of the fun!

Soon enough Daniel, from the Mab was in. And then here came Ignacio and Jasper. Then David Fraser, who hosts Escape Velocity on Mondays, noon-2pm, came by to talk about a new show idea. And with all this I had to train a returning RV DJ, Bunnywhiskers, who now goes by the name Fly Faced Necronomicones, and is hosting Wednesdays noon - 2pm

It got a bit busy in the studio Monday night.

But this didn't keep me from bringing you the music you depend on week by week.

Just look at these tunes! I mean really now, where else are you going to get a mess like this? I ask you, WHERE!?!?!

There's a lot of great goings-on at Radio Valencia these days. Some great shows, with incredible hosts, showing what they've got two hours at a time. That's not nearly enough time to showcase all of what we've got, but there ya go.

Do you think you've got what it takes to host a weekly show? Hit us up station@radiovalencia.fm and let us know what you would care to do on the only uncensored, free form radio station in San Francisco, and the nine Bay Area counties.

Next Monday, June 8th, I've got the young incredible punk band Surprise Privilege in the studio, talking up their new album, and promoting the one year anniversary of I Hate Records, a store owned by Cody of Surprise Privilege and Pretty from False Flag. This is going to be one helluva party, including a huge sale and FREE live music from both bands starting at 6pm, on Saturday, June 13th.

I Hate Records is located at 413 Haight Street in San Francisco.

See you there.

Until then, enjoy and please share.

What a pleasure it is to have talented artists in the studio. Monday night I was lucky to have my old buddy Joe Mangrum in town doing some work on a public art piece of his that the city asked him to come care for. It was either that or the city was going to tear it out and throw it away. Stay classy, San Francisco.

Joe is what we can a hyphenated artist. He's done it all. Since moving to New York a bit over a decade ago, he has been best known as the sand mandala artist of Washington Square Park. Since COVID he's been working on a couple of books on his history as an artist. These will be self published, so please look for them coming in 2022. These will make an excellent addition to any art book collection. He's also working on turning his work in NFTs, something that I am a true novice in. Joe believes NFTs are the future. Might want to jump on this while it's still young.

Musically, tonight has a lot to offer: "new" Nick Cave, King Gizzard, and Amyl. There's punk, some funk, and lots of junk. Take a look at the playlist below and jump right in.

Radio Valencia is co-presenting Flipper, December 30th and 31st at Bottom of the Hill. This is going to be

two incredible shows. Yours truly is MCing December 30th, featuring comedian Neil Hamburger, and Mike Watt and the Missingmen. New Years Eve has Neil Hamburger and SF punk luminaries VKTMS!!! Go to the Bottom of the Hill website for tickets and more information. Radio Valencia will be in house with lots of freshly printed t-shirts just for you!

Happy Thankstaking to you and yours. Let's not forget who's non-seceded land we are all living on. And give thanks to all the farm laborers who work it took to get this food to our tables.

Next Monday, November 29th is my eleventh annual Annual Annual. Two hours featuring one year in music. What year will I choose? Tune in and find out!

Enjoy and please share.

Do you have any idea how much I love you? I don't think you do. OK, perhaps I just lust for your ears. That being said, can you blame me? I have total and complete respect for you and your ears, and I would never maliciously put you in harms way. On the contrary, I hunger to care for you and to turn you on...to amazing music.

I also love tamales. What's not to love? Last week Virginia "Tamale Lady" Ramos passed away at the age of 65. I spent many a Friday and Saturday night enjoying TL's delicious tamales. She may have loved us all, but you didn't want to get on her bad side. I once saw her rip into some drunk asshole outside of Zeitgeist babbling incoherently in front of her. Seriously dude, do you have any idea how lucky you were to even get a whiff of her amazing fare? Tamale Lady, you will be sorely missed. Raise a tamale in tribute, tonight! Did you know that the remarkable local band Rube Waddell composed a song in her honor? It's true, they did. Now you know. Midway through the show I play this just for you. I cannot imagine any other radio show has done the same.

Music-wise you get another musically-diverse program, with a little something for everyone. Go ahead, take a chance on love...or lust, a lust for quality music. As for the DJ, I'm merely a conduit, a paintbrush for this two hour empty canvas, curated for your pleasure. And only nine covers tonight!

And it's all about your pleasure.

Enjoy.

It's a total shock to have any idea where or when any of my shows may or may not be listened to, if at all! I say this, because it hit me a long while back that since you can download these shows, it's always possible, albeit a slim shot, that you are listening to this show in the far distant future on some media player, deep on the outskirts of a space system, having never even stepped foot on Earth. You've only heard passing mention of this long-dead orb. And what you've heard are meager little bits of nonesuch info that has honestly left you responding "meh". And who can really blame you?

I can!

This planet has had its ups and downs, but it's the only planet we have at this time. So you can float there all smug in the Aldebaran system with your flying everything, and ability to beam everything and anything anywhere at any time, but for me and my friends and family in July of 2017 we'll keep on fighting the good fight, making love, rocking out, and flying like an eagle, thank you very much.

Little Lauson Hell joined me on the air this past Monday, for what was her 9th visit to the Radio Valencia studios. Below I link to her previous shows. It's a trip watching her grow up on the radio. I remember how shy she was the first time she was with me. I think she was maybe 7 years old. I always say about that first episode "she was shy until she was no longer shy". Lauson didn't bring much music to the show on this night, but we spoke about her recently completing 7th grade, her fun-filled summer, and her goals for 8th grade. She's got wit, I'll give her that.

Once again I streamed video via FB Live. Thanks for all who tuned in. I honestly don't see what's so fascinating about watching a DJ cue up records, but knock yourself out. My buddy, and musical realization of a childhood dream I had all gone to pot, Adam Mackintosh tuned in and gave me permission to play his recent cover of the pat mAcdonald classic "Future's So Bright". If you recall the Timbuk 3 tune, then you really do need to listen to this latest version, which is about to make it onto a huge 100 song compilation at tribute to Pat. Brilliant!

Adam also introduced me to singer Liv Mueller last week via the Marco Polo app. Have you seen this app? What a voice she has! WOW! Deep, dark and sultry. You can find her release "Liv Sings Light of the Valley, Shadow of the Mountain" on iTunes.

I guess in my weird, subversive sort of way, much of the music on Monday night was somehow or another related to 'merica.

Little Lauson Hell's many visits to Hell's Kitchen:
First show in 2012
Second show in 2014
Third show also in 2014
Fourth show in spring of 2015
Fifth show in the summer of 2015
Sixth show in summer 2016 along with Saucy!
Seventh show was also during summer 2016
Eight show was December 2016

Enjoy.

Taking a week off from hosting my show gives me serious withdrawl-like symptoms. Considering radio is my drug of choice, you'll just have to imagine what it's like.

Anywho, it wasn't easy being away from you all for that long, and for that I apologize. Thanks to Jim G for carrying the load while I was away. He did a great Bowie tribute in my absence. If you haven't heard it, here's the link.

As for tonight, just take a gander at the playlist below! Much in the way of genres, and eras. I also gave tickets away to two upcoming shows, The Soft White Sixties, and The Hooks. If you tune in regularly you too can win yourself tickets to local shows by great bands. Please go out and support live, local music. The bands will thank you, and it just might get you laid.

Enjoy.

Like myself, Eric shares a wide spectrum of musical tastes. Tonight on the show we run the gamut. There's metal, there's rocksteady, just look at the playlist below. The banter is pretty funny too. You should just listen to the whole show and enjoy the hell out of it.

Down in Front brought their amazingness (yes, that's a word) into the studio tonight. It was a mutual admiration society show tonight. I can assure you that we kept it clean-ish. They do spank me near the end of the interview though. I earned it, I can tell you that. Their stories are great, and their music is fresh and fun. You really do need to see them live though, to fully appreciate them in their full story-telling glory.

They're playing at Hotel Utah on Tuesday night, for their CD release party. Come on down. I'll be there. It's going to be a great show!

Second hour is mostly new music, and very guitar-driven. I'm sure you'll enjoying rockin' out as much as I did. I gave tickets away to see the Ferocious Few. Too late for you though. I give tickets away most weeks. Tune in and win!

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #168: Daughter from HELL

What an excellent show today. It being spring break, I brought my daughter, Lauson Hell down to the studio to guest DJ with me. She's a natural. Two years ago Lauson guested on my show, which you can find here. It's fun to see how she's found her voice over the last couple of years. She's not shy, I can tell you that. I wonder where she gets that from?

We were filling in for DJ Cam Dam, who was kind enough to let me take over the day.

Lauson did her part, planning a set, which you can see below, announcing what we played, and answering my questions...kind of.

A Season in Hell #143: My Musical Meanderings

No, my show is not genre specific. You've figured that out already, yes? Last week it's all jazz, the week before it's hard rock. This week I'm in the mood for PUNK! Fuck off!!!!

Why Punk? I don't have to tell you!

OK, I'll tell you. But I'm only telling you because I think deep down you'll understand. I'm willing to bare my soul to you. I'm willing to take the chance that you won't laugh at me, and ridicule me, or point and laugh.

sigh

I like Punk.

There, are you happy now?! Good.

I was born in 1970. I was raised on jazz and blues of the 50s and 60s, as well as the classic rock of the 70s. By the age of 8 I was into KISS. They were my first favorite band. At that age you're only allowed to have one favorite band. It's a law or something. When I was 10 I fell in love with the Beatles, but I felt sooooo bad for admitting to myself that I liked them more than I liked KISS. It was not the friendliest of break-ups. I'll admit, if there were cell phones back then, I would have texted the break up to KISS; I was so ashamed. By 12 I "discovered" Led Zeppelin. Oh damn, now what was I going to do? I still wonder where this KISS poster ended up?

All this time my dad is playing John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and every artist the Blues Brothers covered, in our home, as well as Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry. My sisters (6 and 7 years older than me) were playing the rock of the day (Eagles, Boston, Bob Segar) as well as playing American Bandstand every Saturday. I preferred Soul Train even at an early age.

I used to lay by my speakers with a tape recorder and pretend I was a DJ and back announce all of the songs I would play on the stereo. I wish I still had those tapes. I once hid a tape recorder on the stairs leading to our living room, and taped the family hanging out watching Saturday morning cartoons. I REALLY wish I had that tape today. I probably taped a Grateful Dead concert over it.

And then there's the Dead. I got into them around the same time I got into Zeppelin. I think it was the iconography. It looked so dark, weird and trippy. Like many others, I thought they would be a metal band. I was slightly disappointed when I found out they weren't. I was hungry for something more at this point in my musical journey. Having moved as much as we did (once a year between the ages of 5 and 15; three different states (four if you consider SoCal and NorCal two different states)) I found that I got bored very easily. Music needed to change to really move me.

The Grateful Dead really moved me. I won't get into it here, but their meanderings took me on some amazing journeys. What they didn't do for me however, was drive the teenage angst energy out of me. They mellowed me and made me want to shimmy and dance. I still love them. But I always need something more.

Here comes Punk.

I had always listened to The Clash and The Ramones, but really didn't have a penchant for the wider variety of Punk until I was about 14 and in high school. It was there that my friend Etienne and I started to listen to Metal together. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dio. As a matter of fact, my first "official" concert was November 30, 1984 at the Oakland-Alameda County Auditorium (where the Warriors play basketball) to see Dio (Last in Line) and Dokken (Tooth and Nail). I was 14. I wore my jean jacket. I was afraid the guy next to me, who asked us to save him a seat in exchange for smoking us out, would share a heroin-laced joint and I would be dead before the show even began.

My love for KISS helped for the easy transition to Metal, but it didn't last too long. I still really love Metal, but it was Punk that really spoke to me. Metal spoke of fantasy characters in a fantasy world. Punk was political! Politics was always spoken about in my home. My parents didn't shy away from their negative feelings towards Reagan. The Punk movement was political. I was drawn to it pretty easily.

Starting at KFJC in the fall of 1988 also helped. The Wave of the West is a bastion of musical knowledge; especially that of all-things-alternative. This was before alternative was a genre (thank you very much Nirvana). Punk didn't get me angry. It made me happy! It made me feel like I wasn't alone in my thoughts against the state. It made me feel like my generation wasn't as lost as many thought we were. And the lyrics were hilarious, inane, intense, intelligent, ridiculous.

Being a Deadhead and a Punk isn't as far apart as it would seem. If you like the Dead you pretty much are open to anything, considering how many people DETEST the Grateful Dead. The same could be said for Punk. Though I think more Deadheads like Punk, than Punk likes the Dead. It's all good.

There's not much difference in the spiral dancing of a Dead concert, and a mosh pit at a Punk show. Both are ways of sharing energy. Is one more aggressive? Perhaps, but all good-natured. Even at Punk shows, if you fall down, more often than not there's a hand there to pick you up and get you moving again.

If I've learned anything through my musical journeys, it's that life is all ONE. The mystical, magical ONE. Whether it's Punk, Funk or Junk the musical odyssey that takes us through life is all based on how open we are to the meanderings of the road. I'm truly blessed to have a diverse music library as I do. You're just as likely to find a Black Flag LP in my collection as a Johnny Cash (he's Punk as fuck, btw).

As for tonight's show, it's all punk. Why? I just told you why! Sheesh.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #108: The Return of Altered Barbie

WOW!!! What a night. The Giants win the pennant and I've got Julie Anderson, curator of Altered Barbie in the studio, again!

In 2002 I was on the air interviewing Dennis McNally of the Grateful Dead, when the Giants beat the Cardinals to head to the World Series. In 2010 I was on the air interviewing Mark Growden when they won the World Series. Tonight I was on the air interviewing Julie and a few others when the Giants won the NLCS in an ocean at AT&T Park. WOW! I'm 3-0. Look out Tigers.

On to the show. It's time for the 10th annual Altered Barbie Exhibition, opening this Wednesday, October 24th at 50 Shotwell, in San Francisco. The opening night reception, which promises to be fabulous is this Friday night. Curator Julie Anderson brought in some performers tonight, including GregAngelo (that's how he spells it), Cyclub and Ethel Merman. See links below for these fabulous folks.

I've enjoyed this show so much over the years. You really do have to go check out a certain San Francisco event. Even if you hate Barbie you'll love this show. It's "Altered Barbie", so you know it's going to be really fucked up. Good stuff. Tell them John Hell sent you.

As for the music tonight, after the guests left everything was on vinyl. I really have to thank my friend Kaylynn, who donated about 150 LPs to me and Radio Valencia. Everything I played tonight came from that collection. Lot's of 80s/90s indie, punk, metal, goth. All around goodness.

The rain has slowed down, and the crowds are now out of their cars celebrating in the streets, as I write this. It's going to be a long and crazy night in the Mission. I think I'll join them. This is just too good to pass up. Don't you wish you lived in the greatest city in the world, too?

A Season in Hell #100: I Spoil You

Tonight was my 100th show on Radio Valencia. There's something about that number. A one with two zeros following it. It's so....BIG! It's so solid, and right there in your face. I love things that are right there in your face.

I feel like Iron Mike Tyson. No, not really. He bit an ear off. I've never done that. I doubt I ever will. You never know though. I'm a lover, not a fighter. But I'm tough! I'm long-lasting. I'm reliable. Like. Mike. Tyson....Hmm... wait, let me think this over.

OK, I'm not like Mike Tyson, but my show will blow you away.

Sometimes you have to prepare like a fighter when you do a radio show. You have to know your opponent. In this case my opponent is the audience. I have to win you over. I have to get into your ear holes and make you beg for more. Don't worry, you'll get more. Ain't no Q-Tip gonna help you now.

Tonight it's all about the ROCK! There's so much rock in here, you'll be rolling all over the floor. In the second hour local guitar slinger and future porn star Eric "Snakey McSilver" McFadden dropped by. I've interviewed Eric a million times, but this has got to be the deepest, most hilarious interview with him yet. It's worth a listen. He tells road stories that go on for miles.

So much rock!
