Sometimes things come in twos: peanut butter and jelly, baseball and hotdogs, cats and furballs. So it came as no surprise when I had panned to take the night off that I was lured into the studio when I read about Rolling Stone magazine's horrendous Top 100 Punk songs of all time list. 

As for the second treat, you may have read, or seen the flyer posted around San Francisco, looking for a Daniel Lurie look-a-like to star in a porn parody "Let's Blow San Francisco". I was lucky enough to land Don Francisco, the producer, director, writer for this soon to be classic film for an on air interview, talking about the film and where they're at right now in the process.

Daniel Haver, from the Mabuhay Gardens, was in the studio co-hosting with me again tonight. I've really enjoyed Daniel being around. He's really coming into his own on the air. And then Rob from the band The Seagulls came by along with his friend Heather. And to round out the crowd, Jasper, host of Saturday's Broadcast from Limbo added to the mix.

We all had something loud to say about this top 100. Upsetting and confusing was the common call. My theory is the editors for this list looked at regions of punk around the globe (US and Britain that is) and then considered the top acts and albums from those regions. Finally, they combined all of that into one list. 

Lame. All of it, lame. 

Nevermind #9! 

Most of these bands deserve to be on this list. Pretty much all of them shouldn't be in the order they're in (MC5 after Blink 182, who shouldn't be on this list at all!). And where's the first Stooges and VU albums? Where is DRI? MDC? Cromags???

So between the music, the banter, the talk about what makes San Francisco great, this turned into a better choice than to just stay home on a Monday night.

Ever in search of a special that I can curate for you all, an idea hit me last winter to research great second releases. It can take a band years to craft a first record. It's pretty simple to name a dozen debut "masterpieces". What you may not notice is the pressure placed on a band, or artist, by the record label, to reproduce that magic quickly. This often leads to the sophomore jinx. Many of these bands are considered "one-offs", never to be heard from again; tossed on the scrapheap of musical history.

Then there are the artists who appear to have untold magic dripping from their fretboards, leading to dynamic second records, and perhaps more! 

I put out the word to friends and listeners to share what they considered epic second records, and I was not disappointed. Much of what you hear on this six hour show is a culmination of almost six months of research.

Yes, much of this music comes from the "golden age" of the major label era of the 60s and 70s. But there is so much more. 

I only planned on doing four hours, but the show that follows mine kindly stepped aside allowing me to round out this show with six solid hours of truly impressive fare. 

Yes, there are countless releases I did not share. I often started a set with a specific song and allowed that to inspire what followed. That's often how I choose my sets.

Never draw attention to the mistakes. 

That's really good advice. Don't let them see what's behind the curtain, and all that jazz. 

Unless you can make it an art form. 

I like to think I have made it some kind of art form, and not just roommate radio.

I don't often bring CDs into the studio; it's almost exclusively vinyl for this dude. But tonight I wanted to play a few tunes to celebrate Bunny Day and St. Stupid's Day, so I brought a few CDs along just to find out the CD player was not in operating condition. And I didn't bring nearly enough vinyl to fill two hours. I did have my trusty 5GB external hard drive filled to the brim with tasty musical treats, but I hadn't prepared to pull anything from there, so there was more improvisation on this night than I am used to.

You can probably hear it in my delivery.

And I had a friend in the studio I forgot was coming by, and I like to play the good host, all the while troubleshooting the CD players, which I was unable to do.

Taking a look at the playlist looks pretty satisfying though. I may sound a little cringe on the mic. Let me know. I can take it. My dad always told me it's healthy to embarrass yourself from time to time: it builds character. If that's the case, John Hell was certainly representing tonight!

New year, new, show, new chance to make this even better for you. Have you ever thought about time travel? What do you think about? Where would you go? Why? Who would you want to see? Is this a kill Hitler kind of thing, or more of a see your favorite band before they made it big?

Maybe you just want to see some relatives in their prime? Holiday dinner with the folks? I haven't had dinner with my folks since May of 1984, before they separated when I was 13, two weeks after my very embarrassing bar mitzvah. It's possible we all dined together once or twice following then, but I don't recall. I'm not sad about it. I grew up living with my dad through high school, and it was really quite fabulous. I had no leash. San Francisco in the 80s was a lot of fun when you're a teen with no leash. Thanks dad.

My dad, Harvey Rosenberg, passed away last week at the age of 81, from Parkinson's Disease. He was such a great guy. Monday, January 9th, I'm going to host a two hour tribute to the man who brought music into my life. I wouldn't be who I am today without my father. I'll tell you all about him on Monday night. Tune in, it'll be worth it.

There was lots of rain this week so there's a lot of rain song mixed in tonight, along with a bunch of my faves from 2022. I have a lot of anniversary and remaster releases I threw in as well.

This heat is just too much. Plague, fires, and now the heat? What the hell is this about?!?!?! If I believed in God I would think that it's just one huge cosmic joke. And by Wednesday the sky was the color of blood. Where are the frogs?

I wanted to host my annual labor day show, and I was thinking that now with so many office workers working from home, what are they going to do with all of those empty office buildings, like the Salesforce lingham that penetrates the San Francisco sky? I wonder how many homeless people it could house?

And what about all those frontline workers in the grocery stores? Now that we have the world's richest douchebag, Jeff Bezos owning Whole Paycheck, don't you think he can afford to pay them a living wage? I mean, thanks for the banner hanging on the store front telling us how much you care for your workers, but seriously dude, put your money where your mouth is.

And so goes this show. I mix some Labor Day-themed tunes in with few other treats to keep your toes tapping.

Just take a listen to the first daughter, Tiffany Trump (the one Heir Donny-britches forgot he had) singing her autotuned heart out on the dance number "Like A Bird". And then there's our former Attorney General, John Ashcroft, who lost his Missouri governor's bid to a dead guy. True story. He sings a live version of "Let Eagles Soar". To his credit, he didn't need autotune. Watch out Tiffany.

There's some new music from legendary punk vocalist, Alice Bag; something new from the latest acoustic King Buzzo/Trevor Dunn release; new from Japanese power trio Boris, and a whole heap of music that I'm excited to share with you.

I have come to the realization that I have a lot of music. More than I really know what to do with. I guess this is why I host a radio show. I may need two more hours a week though. I'm just getting warmed up after two.

I hate being late getting my shows up. It's not that I'm lazy, it's that I have to make the time to fit this in. And I really want to give you quality, always. How am I doing? Can you give me a grade? I can take the criticism. I have to. We all have to. What kind of world would this be if we never made ourselves available to constructive criticism? Can you imagine if our government and corporate leaders never listened to quality advice, that may or may not counter their own ideas? Seriously, can you even imagine??? I'm waiting for an old fashioned video screen wipe that makes it appear that we're entering a dream sequence, where we see some fictionalized TV character showing us the many tropes of what it's like when they fail to listen to good advice. You may be doing this too.

Maybe I should just stick to my lane? In this case my lane is music. This show it got sweet and loud. Sometimes loud is cathartic. We need to purge some energy time and again. I was reading recently when you can't get your child to focus, get them to be physically active; it allows them to get the distractions out, so they can focus on the task at hand, with minimal negative emotion. Let's look at this two hour show as a good sprint around the block.

Another round number show in the books. 400 shows is nothing to sneeze at, and looking back at my 30+ years in radio it's more like 1200 I'm guessing. That's something to be proud of, and I am. I love having this platform to share my love of music with you all. Thanks for tuning in when you do. You do tune in, don't you?

I do love training a future great DJ. Tonight I had Ruffin the Love Muffin in the studio with me. He's getting ready to take on his own slot, and I get the extreme pleasure to take him through all the paces.

Janis Joplin passed 49 years ago last week, so I felt the need to bring out the goods: a classic live Ball and Chain from 68. This is a Big Mama Thornton cover, so I had to throw in some original Big Mama Mae, doing her dripping hot Hound Dog. Elvis never did it this good.

Ugh, I was supposed to attend a Radio Valencia Promotions committee meeting tonight, but they all cancelled on me!!!!!!!

Luckily I had prepared a two hour live set for you. I didn't think I would be in the studio to talk it up, but here we are...or were. I'm here now, but not when you read this. Then I'll be gone. So...you know...yeah.

As for the music, this is all from my recent haul from the past couple of weeks. Let me be clear however, this is not all that I have downloaded over the past few weeks. I would need need a few more hours for that one. I found some Emmylou Harris from 1970 this week, for instance.

Almost all of these tracks are soundboard quality, with a couple superb audience recordings thrown in there as well. I used to be completely against audience recordings until I heard a few from some legendary tapers who knew where to plant themselves in the sweet spot, using the best equipment at the time. And let's not forget those who have taken the time to master these recordings, digitize them and make them available (free of charge) to you and me. Thanks for all you do.

First live show for the new year and of course it's a tribute. Duh! Michael "The Professor" Shannon, co-host of Sex Cels (10-midnight Monday's on RV) passed away last month after a long bout with melanoma. I cannot say enough great things about The Professor. My regular interactions with him came during our weekly show transitions. Michael would start Sex Cels each week with a three-song opening theme. He would have me guess the theme and try to stump me. More often than not I would guess correctly. I am a walking musical encyclopedia after all. ;)~ He was a devout atheist and would proudly wear that on his sleeve. He was also a serious Star Wars fanatic. I still liked him though. I can't imagine being in the studio without his smiling face to greet me before taking over the board. Night night, Michael.






Another punch in the gut came a few weeks back when I heard about the passing of another friend, musical stalwart and jack of all musical trades, Ralph Carney. Ralph passed away following a fall down his stairs in his home in Portland, Oregon. He lived in the Bernal Heights neighborhood of San Francisco for many years, where he was known lovingly as the Mayor of Bernal. Ralph was often found sitting in with local bands throughout the week at clubs like Amnesia or Club Deluxe. He had recorded sessions possibly numbering in the thousands with bands such as the B52s, Elvis Costello, Les Claypool, Stan Ridgeway, and of course Tom Waits, who he spent about 15 years with. Ralph was such a cornball. His personality really shone through his music. Listening to him it made sense that his music was just an extension of his personality. He was like a walking cartoon character; very rubbery. The final twenty minutes of my show is a tribute to Ralph. Another great has left the building. Ralph-a-Palooza will be held on Thursday February 1st, 8PM-2AM, at SF Eagle. Performers include Robin Coomer, Gaucho, The Extra Action Marching Band, The Cottontails, Allison Lovejoy, Griddle, and many more special surprises (no Tom Waits will probably not be one of those surprises).

Join my this Sunday afternoon starting at 4PM at Thee Parkside in SF for a live memorial to International Rock Poster artist Ron Donovan. There will be rock posters made in his honor by acclaimed artists including Chris Shaw (poster below on the left), and Ron's former partner Chuck Sperry. We're going to send Ron out the only way he would allow: drunk and very very late to the party.
