Hell's Kitchen Radio #457: 11th annual Annual Annual: 1978

Every year leading up to my Annual Annual, I suffer and strain to decide on a year I want to focus on. This year was no different. Do I want to reach back pre-1970? How about something a little more recent, like the lost year of 2020? I asked for suggestions, and a bunch flew my way, but the one that really stuck came from my buddy, and teaching colleague, Eric, who suggested 1978. The emergence of English post-punk, metal was evolving, funk was redefining itself against a backdrop of too much disco. There is a lot to choose from when it comes to 1978.

I took at least a week to pour over my options. In the end I sat with approximately four hours of music to fit into about an hour forty minutes, mixed with talk and highlights from the year. I tried to mix it up, and keep you on your toes. I really appreciate all of the many comments that kept coming during the show, and I'm sorry I didn't take any requests. Shows like these are pretty well mapped out by the time I flip the switch.

Take a look at the playlist below, and click the link up above to stream or download this bad boy.

What a pleasure it is to have talented artists in the studio. Monday night I was lucky to have my old buddy Joe Mangrum in town doing some work on a public art piece of his that the city asked him to come care for. It was either that or the city was going to tear it out and throw it away. Stay classy, San Francisco.

Joe is what we can a hyphenated artist. He's done it all. Since moving to New York a bit over a decade ago, he has been best known as the sand mandala artist of Washington Square Park. Since COVID he's been working on a couple of books on his history as an artist. These will be self published, so please look for them coming in 2022. These will make an excellent addition to any art book collection. He's also working on turning his work in NFTs, something that I am a true novice in. Joe believes NFTs are the future. Might want to jump on this while it's still young.

Musically, tonight has a lot to offer: "new" Nick Cave, King Gizzard, and Amyl. There's punk, some funk, and lots of junk. Take a look at the playlist below and jump right in.

Happy Thankstaking to you and yours. Let's not forget who's non-seceded land we are all living on. And give thanks to all the farm laborers who work it took to get this food to our tables.

Next Monday, November 29th is my eleventh annual Annual Annual. Two hours featuring one year in music. What year will I choose? Tune in and find out!

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza - Monday 6-8PM Pacific - PJ Harvey (1998) & Beat Farmers (1987)

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza

Monday's 6-8PM Pacific

Nothing like leaving your external hard drive full of most of your digitized music in your classroom on the Friday before a week off. That was fun. However, it did make me look on other devices to see what music I missed. Low and behold here's this phenomenal PJ Harvey show at the Avalon in Boston from November 2, 1998, broadcast live on the legendary WBCN-FM that will just knock you off your feet. I forgot how much I do adore Miss Polly Jean Harvey and band. Damn, this show rocks hard.

Lineage: WBCN 104.1 FM live broadcast > Yamaha RX-500U receiver > Naka. BX 125 cassette recorder (dolby off) > Maxell XLII-S 90 minute cassette > Tascam 112 > soundforge (16 bit 44.1 khz wav) > flac 8 (sb's aligned)

Since the PJ Harvey show is 90 minutes long, I needed to throw in something more of a tease than the whole meal. For that there's nothing better than Beat Farmers. Boy oh boy I used to love seeing Country Dick Montana (not to be confused with Handsome Dick Manitoba) when they used to make it up to the Bay Area from San Diego. It's really hard to believe they were a San Diego band. I mean, what does San Diego even sound like? Have they ever had a music scene? You would think I would have a clue about this, but apparently I do not. Somebody please school me on what I've been missing. In the meantime, I have the middle of a great Beat Farmers show from Santa Cruz, at the end of a months-long tour on November 20, 1987 at the Catalyst. I love the comments they make about this being the end of the tour. And the music isn't half bad. HA!

Lineage: Monitor soundboard feed with 2 Crown PZM microphones over stage, 2 Nakamichi cm300 microphones over stage and one other ambient mic. mounted on balcony railing. Live matrix mix > Sony auto-reverse cassette deck > Dolby B encoded Maxell XLII-S master.

If you have missed seeing live music as much as I have, then I think you're really going to enjoy my Monday night Live Bootleg Bonanza on Radio Valencia. I have thousands of shows from hundreds of artists and bands, spanning many genres. Every Monday is a chance for me to share some treats with you. I hope you enjoy and share the music. MAKE A REQUEST!!!

Radio Valencia Co-Presents Flipper December 30 & 31 at Bottom of the Hill

This is certain to sell out, so head on over to the Bottom of the Hill site to grab your tickets now. Ring in the new year with Bay Area noise-rock, post-punk, experimental rockers Flipper!

This is supposedly David Yow's final shows with Flipper, so you do not want to miss this. Honestly, unless

Both nights have comedian and man about town, Neil Hamburger opening. mike watt + missingmen are in support on December 30th, with Radio Valencia's John Hell as your MC. Legendary San Francisco punk band VKTMS are in support for December 31st.

Radio Valencia will be in the house with a merch table so you can ring in the new year with a brand spankin' new Radio Valencia t-shirt. Come grab one for your and your loved ones.

Check out my interview with Flipper guitarist Ted Falconi and bassist Rachel Thoele from July 2019, leading up to Flipper's 40th anniversary show at Great American Music Hall

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza - Monday 6-8PM Pacific - Black Flag (1984) Minutemen (1985) fIREHOSE (1987)

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza

I was asked recently which genre of music defined me the best. This is an almost impossible question to answer. We used to play this game during the weekly KFJC meetings, during the new music run-through, where the person who reviewed the record had to tell us what the genre was. The unspoken role was to come up with the most creative genre to describe the music. Let's just say a lot of hyphens were used during these discussions. Considering the audience I was in front of when I was asked this question, I kept it simple: punk. As much as I love funk, soul, jazz, Grateful Dead (yes, they are their own genre, IMHO), prog, psych, Japanese-ambient-psych-noise, Mississippi Records compilations, electro-kraut-Appalachian-new-wave, punk seems to be my default.

Looking at my live music collection I noticed I haven't shared that many punk shows during this slot, so tonight I have three great west coast punk bands squeezed into two hours.

First up, SST champions: Black Flag. There would be no SST without Greg Ginn. He founded the label to put out Black Flag records, and the records of his friend's bands. And good for us! This show is a real treat. It's the Henry Rollins era from April 6, 1984, in his own Washington DC backyard. I love the energy of an east coast punk audience. You will too.

Lineage: Soundboard. unknown (low) gen cassette > wav (track-splits) > flac

The second hour features two Mike Watt bands. First up is the legendary Minutemen from The Stone in San Francisco, March 1, 1985. I often wonder what would have happened to this band, and to D Boon specifically, if he hadn't passed away. So much talent there. This is such a great show. Every song played to its best, in front of a crowd of Minutemen enthusiasts.

Lineage: FOH soundboard > Marantz PMD-430 w/dbx nr, Maxell MA 90

The final show for the night is a short acoustic set from Mike Watt's band fIREHOSE, recorded live at

Brandeis University in Boston on March 17, 1987

Lineage: WBRS-FM ìThe Jointî>FM(master)>Onkyo TA-RW344 w\ azimuth correction>.wav>CD>express rip>flac (level 8)

Hell's Kitchen Radio #455: Wish You Were Broke

You have distinguished taste in music. You only want the best. So why are you here? Just joking; I got what you need.

Often times I pull my music shortly before I leave for the station, looking for albums that I either recently purchased, or something I haven't listened to in a long time. There are also times I pull records that I haven't listen to quite enough, and figure I'll try out a track on you. That being said, these records rarely get played on my show. I don't really want to experiment on you that much. That wouldn't be fair. You want to tune into a show where the host actually has done the work for you.

I've trained countless DJs over the years. Though I impart upon them my style of programming, it's important that they find their own voice, as I did. Starting my radio life at the great KFJC (88-97), I was trained by Hell'n Hairspray, who shared her own wisdom about mixing accessible tunes with more challenging tracks. There were two school's of thought at the Fine 89: Mix it up so as not to alienate the listener, and push the limits 100% of the time, listeners-be-damned! I come from the former school. I like to push the limits from time to time, but I also don't want you all running for the hills, or to Dave-FM. HA!

On this show you get a mixed bag of sonic goodness. It's the 50th anniversary of Led Zeppelin's fourth release (untitled), I throw in a version of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" that you have never heard before, some folk blues from the deep south, Japanese psych, Detroit proto-punk, West Kenyan Guitar, Aussie garage rock, Detroit blues, and The Residents, along with many other tasty treats, fresh from Hell's Kitchen Radio.

Take a moment and glance at the playlist, and then click on the link at the top to stream or download this episode.

Enjoy and please share.

After careful consideration, and a close listen to my pre-Halloween show, I came to the decision that it just plane blew. Therefore, I have made the executive decision for a do-over. The first hour on Monday night was some sweet spooky tunes to keep the holiday spirit going. Pun intended.

To make this night even better, the second hour features not one, but two remarkable performers: Kate Vargas and Eric McFadden. If you have tuned into my show over the years, then you know Eric is a longtime friend, and always a great interview, always with fun stories to share. Tonight Eric is joined by singer/songwriter Kate Vargas. I've been playing the hell out of her recent release, Rumpumpo. The two of them have been hosting their weekly "From The Red Couch" shows since COVID began, and each week is a real treat.

Tonight we talk about how COVID has been treating them, writing and performing, and what stories mean to them. I really love interviewing songwriters; they always dig deeper to tell the more meaningful story. I think you'll agree.

Eric and Kate will be performing at Dark Cabaret at the Great Star Theater in Chinatown the last two

weekends in November. I have attended many times and can attest to how amazing this show is. Go to the site and poke around. Seriously, go see this show!!!

Kate is performing later in November at Amado's in the Mission, Sunday, November 21st.

OK, that's enough. Take a look at the playlist below, click the link at the top to stream or download this show, by tickets to the live shows, and get a damn life already.

Have you checked out any of our many great new shows on Radio Valencia? Go to the shows page and tune in when it fits your schedule. There is so much there to fit your awesome style. We wish we were as cool as you.

Enjoy.

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza - Monday 6-8PM Pacific - Primus July 31, 2010

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza

Monday's 6-8PM Pacific

http://radiovalencia.fm

It seems like yesterday I was seeing Primus at some local dive around the Bay Area. They were the local band my friends and I would go see on a regular basis, along with Limbomaniaca, Fungo Mungo, Bug, Deli Creeps, Mr. Bungle, The Melvins, and any other off-color group that were hanging around SF back in the late 80s and early 90s.

When they opened for Rush we all knew they were headed great places. And look at them now! I'll admit I stopped seeing them regularly after that. I was harder to get in to the smaller venues once they hit the big time. And I wasn't really into seeing them at a larger place. I think the largest place I ever saw them was The Warfield and perhaps the greek Theater in Berkeley.

But what a show they put on! The crowd was always loud and into singing along. Those are some fond memories. And I'm happy for where this band has gone, and the many projects Les Claypool has taken on.

Tonight I have an excellent digital soundboard to share with you all, from Bridgeport, Connecticut, July 31, 2010. Most of the songs are from their first few records, which I love.

Tune in and hear me tell the tale of being present when they recorded "Suck On This" in 1988. Fun story, and my 4 year old son is a part of it.
