What a fun night this was, and I think you can tell from the between set banter. I know, I know, you've come for the music, and the music you shall have. Though Spring is in the air, other than the first track, I wasn't thinking of producing a spring-themed show. You can think of this as one if that helps you sleep at night, but honestly it was just me throwing down. 

New music from an Emily Palen side project: Othered. She'll be in the studio April 4th to talk up new KnightressM1 recordings. I have been dying to interview Emily, so this promises to be fun.

I've got some Jazz, 60s Psych, Funk, Metal, Garage, and Iggy Pop. What else could you ask for? 

We have a fundraiser for Radio Valencia this Sunday, March 27th, 4-10PM at our next door neighbors house, Make Out Room, 3225 22nd Street, in the Mission District of San Francisco. We need money for new equipment and upkeep. We also desperately need to spruce up the new space. Info on the flyer below. We would love to see you there.

It has been almost two full years since I have hosted a guest in the studio. Monday night I was pleased to have Patsy and Giovanni "The Cleaner" mAcdonald, from the greatest rock and roll band in the world, Shake Well, join me in the second hour, talking up their new release and upcoming show at Ivy Room, Thursday night, September 16th, featuring TJ mAcdonald, who sounds a lot like Eric McFadden, on guitar. Eric and Kate Vargas are headlining this show.

The mAcdonald family are a curious bunch, and Patsy shares some stories I don't think the rest of the family are too keen on you all knowing. Be sure to check out the interview. They also brought along some tracks for the soon-to-be-released new album. 

There's plenty of new music throughout the show tonight. Amyl and the Sniffers, Toshi Kasai, Paul Leary, Kate Vargas, Meatbodies, and Negativland. Whew, that's a lot.

I did a deep dive into my CD collection tonight. I don't buy CDs anymore. I haven't purchased one in a few years, and it was a Melvins CD, since they rarely release on LP. The first hour has some delightful genre-busting "album cuts" for your edification. The second hour, as promised, is my weekly live music feature. Just take a look at the playlist below for track, artist, date and location.

I heard that Gregg Allman is cancelling his entire 2017 tour. Hopefully his health isn't that poor. In any case I pulled out a tasty treat from the famous Fillmore East run in March 1971. There's also a rare Jack Bruce/Robin Trower cover of a Cream song. I think you'll agree that Trower give Clapton a run for his money here.

I close the show with a track that is 51 years old this week. The Grateful Dead played the third Acid Test in Los Angeles on March 12, 1966. This Viola Lee certainly sounds lysergic-inspired. You tell me.

Ok, alright, I know that I told you that I was going to die, and you would no longer have dear old John Hell to kick around anymore. Well, it appears that my orthopedic surgeon actually does know his ass from a hole in the ground, and I'm back to tell the tale.

On March 16th I underwent ACL and meniscus reconstruction. That was
fun. Laying on my ass for three weeks was not. My God it was so damn boring. Too much time on the couch. Too much Trailer Park Boys. Actually, there can never be too much Trailer Park Boys. Ricky is such a dick. Bubbles on the other hand is quite brilliant. I watched my share of movies, read a few great books and comics, and caught up on a few records that have been sitting in the stack for too long. But the sitting really took its toll. I have also come to the conclusion that ICE is my best friend.

I have never wanted to get back on the air as much in my life. And let me tell you by the end of my show tonight I was in some serious pain. Look what I do for my art.



There's a good mash up of genres tonight, and a small tribute to the late Merle Haggard, who died last week on his 79th birthday. I've got some new Melvins for you, music from the first Charles Moothart (CFM) solo effort (he's Ty Segall's guitarist in Fuzz and the Ty Segall Band), along with some soon-to-be-released Zig Zags!!! There are some oddball choices tonight, as I've had a few weeks to consider what to play for you. The next few shows ought to be pretty fun too.

I absolutely love interviewing bands. I've been interviewing band since my earliest days and radio in the late 1980s. And tonight I was most honored to have not only a super talented and original band, but a very entertaining and vocal interview as well. Royal Jelly Jive joined me in the studio, to talk up their new self-titled release as well as the record release party that just passed.

This six piece gypsy jazz, soul influenced menagerie, With solid and sultry female vocals, and horns to boot, Royal Jelly Jive are a sextet to watch out for. See them soon and a small venue, because it won't take long before they are hitting the big time.

The rest of the program highlighted some Hardly Strictly Bluegrass artists, some Bay Area soul/funk/punk from the 90s, and some classic hip-hop and rap, along with a few fun covers to boot.

Take charge and be large, in the land of the lost.

A Season in Hell #156: Best of 2013

It's that time of year when the sun goes down earlier, the air gets a bit chillier, and DJs from around the world try to claim that they have what is the absolute BEST music of the year to share with you.

Well they don't. They're all suckers. But I do!!!

My Best of 2013 is perhaps my best BEST OF show in all of my 25 years in radio. Really. Would I lie?

I'm listening to new music all of the time. There are times that I'm looking at my music library, and I wonder just when I'll listen to any of that "old" music again? And when I say old, I mean from last month. There just aren't enough hours in the day. Am I right? I can't wait until I'm too old to do anything by listen to my music. Then I'll hire some hot nurse who'll have to bathe me and put records on my turntable. That's the life.

In the meantime enjoy this collection of fine tunes from 2013. We've got many local talented groups that deserve your attention like Thee Oh Sees, Rin Tin Tiger, Y Axes, Vandella, Mikal Cronin, KalriSSian, Bears! Bears! Bears!, and my favorite "local" band, The Melvins.

Two hours is just not enough time to play all of my faves from 2013. I suggest you tune into Radio Valencia throughout December to check out the many "Best of" shows that are going to cover the airwaves like a warm that sticky film of fat that covers the turkey the day following a good feast...or something like that.

A Season in Hell #145: Slow Me Down

I'll be the first to admit it, I play the Melvins too damn much. I don't play them every week, but I seem to look for any reason to throw them on. And why not?! They ROCK! And on tonight's show I had a pair of tickets to give away for their upcoming Slims show. I haven't been this excited since I gave a pair of tickets away to see Nirvana in 1991 at the Warfield when I was a DJ on KFJC. I remember asking for the 90th caller. And I got them too. HAHAHAHA! I went to that show.

Funny story:

The show was so packed, and I was on the floor, that before the lights went down for the Nirvana set, the crowd was pushing left and right, and I felt my feet leave the floor more than once. I decided I had enough and wanted out, but there was no way in hell I was going to be able to work my way through the crowd to leave the floor. So I did what any respectable and experienced rock show attendee would do: I crowd surfed out of it! I just pushed my way on top of the crowd while shouting "OUT!" at the top of my lungs (it was very loud in there). I was pushed back to the area just off the floor. The place was so packed that the security didn't move anyone away from the area I ended up at, and I enjoyed a perfect view without anyone stepping on my toes.

I also really have to blame Nirvana for the death of alternative music. I don't think they realized what they were doing when the release of Smells Like Corporate Dollars Rolling In came out in September of 1991. I love what Buzz of the Melvins said when asked in the Oregon Music News "what's the weirdest thing you've ever done?"

"Weirdest? I guess the weirdest thing would be the whole Nirvana explosion out of something that we started, you know? That was pretty weird. The fact that our influence, musically, was basically on a massive, global level. That’s pretty weird. At the same time, it’s very exciting that I wasn’t wrong. My initial instincts were correct. You take a homogenized, bastardized version of what we’re doing, it can indeed sell millions of records. And that’s exactly what happened."

  

Love it! Read the whole interview, it's one of the best I've seen with the King. Also, check out the video below, for what is perhaps the most BRILLIANT way to buy a house.

Anyway, I digress. This is a fun show. I slow down a few tunes near the start to give you a feel of the way they could sound. Let me know what you think. There's some new stuff thrown in, and some old stuff too. And of course, there's The Melvins. A whole set of them to be exact.

With the passing of Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist of The Doors, I wanted to share a couple of favorite tracks. Morrison Hotel has always been a great LP to me, so Peace Frog/Blue Sunday was a given, but being the consummate bootlegger that I am, I had to share a classic rare moment of Ray brilliance. Check out the 1967 Light My Fire from Detroit. Smokin'!!!
