This show was great fun to produce. I've got a trainee, Annika, in the studio with me and she put together a few really great sets (marked with "AD"). Her taste in international sounds is inspiring to say the least!

We've got a live fundraiser happening Sunday, October 19th, 1-6PM at GRNHS Gallery, 864 Folsom Street (b/w 5th and 6th). We've got three amazing bands, including Janky Band, Rustangs, and Fantasy!!! We also have been from 21st Amendment and non-alcohol for those who desire such. We'll also have some Radio Valencia shirts available.

We couldn't be more excited about this show. We love this gallery space, and these three bands are all known for bringing the heat.

This fundraiser is part rent party, part get the damn website and apps updated!!!

Please come down, or consider donating to our GoFundMe.

See you at the show.

Let's admit it, we need to escape from reality today more than ever before. Amiright? Music might be the only thing that can get us through the next four years. I know we're all really emotional right now. Life is hard. I don't care if you're a high school student suffering from the expectations of your parents and your school, or if you're a 40-something slogging through the doledrums of your 40 hour work week, with the boss breathing down your neck; you need a break.

Consider this program as your respite from a world gone mad.

Sometimes I even surprise myself. There are at least three SETS OF THE NIGHT tonight! If radio is the art of the segue, then you are in for a real treat.

Honestly, this show is easily in my top 10 that I have hosted in the past 28 years.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen #205: Happy Toddie Time

Tonight on the show I had two, count them, TWO local bands in the studio. In the first hour, Erin, from the Oakland trio The Hot Toddies came by to talk up her band's 10th anniversary show happening this Saturday night at The Fillmore. They're a surf-pop band, with some rather bodacious lyrics. Erin had some fun stories to tell, and I know the upcoming show is going to be a hoot.

In the second hour Rebecca and Mike from Happy Fangs stopped in to talk up their show, also this Saturday night. They're headlining at Rickshaw Stop. Hmmm, which show to go to? If you haven't heard Happy Fangs yet, then you MUST listen to this interview. Rebecca was having nothing of what I was serving up. OUTSTANDING! She served up some delicious Hell to this here host. Their brand spankin' new release, Capricorn, dropped a couple of days ago. Check it out.

I asked both bands a favor. One said maybe, the other a resolute NO!

It's all about supporting live, local music. Stop being boring and go to a show this weekend. I'm going to see my man-crush, Ty Segall at the Great American Music Hall on Thursday night. It's the first time I've ever seen him, and I'm really pretty giddy about this. As much as I really want to get in close, because he's very physical on stage, I also want to be in that sweet spot in the middle of the room. What to do, what to do? On Saturday night, I'm going to miss seeing both of my guests, and head up to Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, to see Phil Lesh's new band Communion. I wonder what they're going to play? Also, this room has got to be the BEST sound room in the Bay Area. And why not? Phil has the money and the musical acumen to create the very best.

Ah, for the love of live music!

Stop being boring, and go have fun.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #155: Sure is Pissed!

Ok, so sometimes when I'm staring at my music collection, which is quite large, I have no idea what the hell I'm going to play for you. Seriously. Most of the time, when I'm preparing for my show, I totally know what I'm going to play for you. I have a theme in mind, or it's all new music, or based on a band, etc. There are times when I've finished my show and I can't wait until the following Monday when I can play you some tunes that I didn't get to. Then there are those days when I'm just staring at my walls of music (yes, I said walls) and I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm going to play.

What to do, what to do?

That's when I know it's time to really mix it up. For tonight's show it's all about the many genres and strange goings-on in John Hell's music library. Psych, international, grunge, pop vocals, prog-a-capella, accordions, pissed off preachers, ripped off originals, pissed off black men, legendary music-makers, mash-up copyright infringers, and Iggy Pop.

There you have it. Just take a look at this play list, and I'm sure that you'll agree, 4 out of 5 dentist can't be wrong.

You know you just have to drive this one home today!

A Season in Hell #78: Radio Valencia: PsychafunkaWHA?!?!?

Wow, Ronnie Montrose dies, Davey Jones dies. Damn. What to play? I know, Afro-Funk and Psychedelia! I bought the new Wooden Shjips Remixes on vinyl yesterday, along with a tasty Afro-Funk record from 1975. I've pulled a lot from both the psychedelia and Afro-Funk parts of my extensive library.
