Sometimes things come in twos: peanut butter and jelly, baseball and hotdogs, cats and furballs. So it came as no surprise when I had panned to take the night off that I was lured into the studio when I read about Rolling Stone magazine's horrendous Top 100 Punk songs of all time list. 

As for the second treat, you may have read, or seen the flyer posted around San Francisco, looking for a Daniel Lurie look-a-like to star in a porn parody "Let's Blow San Francisco". I was lucky enough to land Don Francisco, the producer, director, writer for this soon to be classic film for an on air interview, talking about the film and where they're at right now in the process.

Daniel Haver, from the Mabuhay Gardens, was in the studio co-hosting with me again tonight. I've really enjoyed Daniel being around. He's really coming into his own on the air. And then Rob from the band The Seagulls came by along with his friend Heather. And to round out the crowd, Jasper, host of Saturday's Broadcast from Limbo added to the mix.

We all had something loud to say about this top 100. Upsetting and confusing was the common call. My theory is the editors for this list looked at regions of punk around the globe (US and Britain that is) and then considered the top acts and albums from those regions. Finally, they combined all of that into one list. 

Lame. All of it, lame. 

Nevermind #9! 

Most of these bands deserve to be on this list. Pretty much all of them shouldn't be in the order they're in (MC5 after Blink 182, who shouldn't be on this list at all!). And where's the first Stooges and VU albums? Where is DRI? MDC? Cromags???

So between the music, the banter, the talk about what makes San Francisco great, this turned into a better choice than to just stay home on a Monday night.

There are reasons to feel despair, and there are reasons to celebrate. I think we can do both at the same time. Two things can be right at the same time. Time waits for no one, and it won't wait for Hell. Hell is for other people's children. Children are the future. There is no future. There is only now. 

Can you tell I'm tired?

I just finished helping Little Lauson Hell (AKA: Spawn) do her taxes. What a kick in the ass that was. 

I'm pretty brain dead. Deadhead. Head on a poll. Poll taxes. TAXES?!?!??!

That was terrible.

And you and I both know what they're using our taxes for! And since the IRS basically doesn't exist at all anymore, what's going to happen if we all just don't file?

I'm so tired I couldn't remember a better word for "don't" in the previous sentence. I'm misspelling words all over the damn place! You wouldn't know that though since I have a lot of white out.

And I'm distracted with Lauson and our kitty Chairman Meow Mao (AKA Maui) chilling out next to me. Lauson loves our kitty. 

Sorry. I was gone for a moment, We both had to take a kitty break. If you know, you know.

True story.

I think I was going to write something about music since I did host my show on Monday night. I bought a few records over the weekend and I share a lot of it tonight! Orcutt, Shelley, Miller; The Exploited, Sprints, Primitive Ring, and The Bobby Lees!!!!!!!

I kinda blew my load with all this great new music. Too bad, so sad.

So tired. I really need to call it a night and not regret my decisions.

Hosting bands is a real treat when you're in radio. I remember being young in the radio game and getting nervous whenever I knew I had a recording artist coming onto my show. I did not want to mess this up. In those days at KFJC, most of the artists I would interview were either big names (George Clinton), or no names (you name it, they probably aren't around anymore). Either way I needed to be prepared.

And preparing pre-Internet was a chore. If the name was known (James Brown), the prep was simple (a brief history and mostly current project, tour, etc.). If they were a younger band with an album out, then I hoped there was enough bio info on the sleeve to help me prepare. Maybe the label would send something over?

The biggest lesson I learned about interview was to be a better listener. The best interviews are the ones where the follow-up questions are relevant and strong. I want to probe; get to the root. You will know the answer to my questions, but I want you to pause and reflect before you respond. My favorite response will always be "that's a really good question".

Over the years I've taken pride in how well I facilitate an interview. I've had many of my subjects state this was the best interview they've ever had. That's incredibly flattering. I love having my guests, famous or not, feel completely comfortable behind the mic. Some interviews I've hosted with bands have been so good I've invited them back with the caveat they need to guest DJ with me the nest time they're in. They love that, and many have taken me up on it.

Tonight I had Roman from P.O.S. in the studio promoting his upcoming show at the Mabuhay Gardens (FabMab) where he'll be turning 19!!! This was his first radio show, and I loved the conversation. He was so honest and vulnerable, and present. I could not ask for a better subject to talk with. 

Roman has a deep thrash metal pedigree. His father and uncle were in Death Angel, and band I loved while growing up in San Mateo in the 80s. Roman continues this tradition of quality thrash, with blinding-fast guitar, pounding rhythms, and timely lyrics about what it is to be a youth in today's society, living at the end of gangster capitalism.

studio with me Monday night. Daniel "Asterisk" Haver, and Empress Katrina Zanotto hung out to talk music and running the most important club in San Francisco music history (IMHO). Daniel admitted to two things that you'll need to listen into to find out about. 

There's much to enjoy about this here show, even if there was a bit more roommate radio than I prefer. We laughed a lot, and that's what's most important.

Do you ever have days when you just can't get a song out of your head? I have many days like this. Oftentimes it's when my 6-year-old son, Bodhi is singing "The Wreck of the Old 97", but then there are days when I hear a phrase and it leads me right to a song. More often than not I like the song. I heard the best way to get these songs out of your head is to sing it, start to finish. That works when I know all the lyrics, obviously. I prefer my method: share it with you on my show.

I couldn't get "White Girl" from X out of my head all Monday, so it's only fitting that I started my show with it. As usual I did some record shopping recently, so I had to share some fun crate-digging scores. There's the new Shannon and the Clams, which is breathtaking. If you know, you know.

I also have some new Melvins and Oh Sees later in the show. As for new-to-me, I found the GOAT Levitation Sessions, which I'm quickly wearing out from so much play at home. Zig Zags put out a new album full of recently re-recorded classics. I also have some classic San Francisco Punk with Inflatable Boy Clams and Fuck-Ups. Not to be missed!

And continuing with my love for religion (blech) there's some Negativland and Butthole Surfers to bless you.

Tonight I'm featuring two bands who have more in common than you may have realized. Los Angeles psychedelic rock band The Doors lived a short, but very hot career, carried by three brilliant and talented musicians, and fronted by a madman, who probably had to be mad to evoke the imagery brought forth in his lyrics. The show you'll be hearing tonight has been widely traded in bootleg circle and for good reason. The 68 Stockholm shows are legendary for the quality of the performance as well as the availability of the bootlegs, which first made their way into the hands of the public in 1988 thanks to the infamous bootleg label Swingin' Pig. 

The boys are in top form.

A few short years following the disillusion of The Doors, the LA punk scene was in full force. One of the bands leading the charge was X, led by John Doe and his girlfriend, poet Exene Cervenka, along with guitarist Billy Zoom, and drummer DJ Bonebrake. During their long career they crossed over from punk, to americana, to folk rock. 

The LA connection is only part of what these two seminal bands have in common. X wouldn't have received the attention they did had it not been for Doors keyboardist/vocalist Ray Manzarek, who produced their first four albums, making X a force to be reckoned with. 

The show I have for you tonight from October 1983, comes just one month following the release of their fourth LP: "More Fun in the New World". You can feel the energy in the crowd as the band rips through their classics and classics-to-be, and closes with a Doors cover!

I know you're going to dig this.

Did ya hear the news, it's all over town. If you ain't heard it boy, you better sit down. I've got the story here, it's hot off the press. Brace yourself now and take a deep breath. Grab a hold of something, hold on tight. John Hell is on the loose tonight.

Whew, now that I have got that Bob Segar lyric off my chest, let's get on with the show. There's lots of new music represented tonight, as well as some classics you have probably never heard before. I completely failed to play any Ken Nordine, who passed away this past weekend. Dang. I had a few brilliant tracks of his lined up, too.

Check out new music from Gringo Star, Perfect Son, Cherry Glazerr, Sunflower Bean, Deer Tick, Royal Canoe, Brownout, and Jon Spencer. I gave tickets away to see Jon Spencer at Slims. You seem you need to tune in so you too can have the chance of winning tickets to shows. You really need to get out more. Work to live, don't live to work. You need more balance in your life.

You may have noticed, i've taken to closing my show with Louis Armstrong. A lot of DJs will have an opening and closing theme songs. I've played with this over the years, and I feel it's time to throw it back into the mix. Many DJs also have music they speak over; known as a music bed. The only reason you don't hear me doing this much at Radio Valencia is my own prep. Just another goal of mine for 2019. You would think 350+ shows into my RV tenure, and about 30 years in radio I would have this figured out already? I'm pretty lazy it would appear.

It's a total shock to have any idea where or when any of my shows may or may not be listened to, if at all! I say this, because it hit me a long while back that since you can download these shows, it's always possible, albeit a slim shot, that you are listening to this show in the far distant future on some media player, deep on the outskirts of a space system, having never even stepped foot on Earth. You've only heard passing mention of this long-dead orb. And what you've heard are meager little bits of nonesuch info that has honestly left you responding "meh". And who can really blame you?

I can!

This planet has had its ups and downs, but it's the only planet we have at this time. So you can float there all smug in the Aldebaran system with your flying everything, and ability to beam everything and anything anywhere at any time, but for me and my friends and family in July of 2017 we'll keep on fighting the good fight, making love, rocking out, and flying like an eagle, thank you very much.

Little Lauson Hell joined me on the air this past Monday, for what was her 9th visit to the Radio Valencia studios. Below I link to her previous shows. It's a trip watching her grow up on the radio. I remember how shy she was the first time she was with me. I think she was maybe 7 years old. I always say about that first episode "she was shy until she was no longer shy". Lauson didn't bring much music to the show on this night, but we spoke about her recently completing 7th grade, her fun-filled summer, and her goals for 8th grade. She's got wit, I'll give her that.

Once again I streamed video via FB Live. Thanks for all who tuned in. I honestly don't see what's so fascinating about watching a DJ cue up records, but knock yourself out. My buddy, and musical realization of a childhood dream I had all gone to pot, Adam Mackintosh tuned in and gave me permission to play his recent cover of the pat mAcdonald classic "Future's So Bright". If you recall the Timbuk 3 tune, then you really do need to listen to this latest version, which is about to make it onto a huge 100 song compilation at tribute to Pat. Brilliant!

Adam also introduced me to singer Liv Mueller last week via the Marco Polo app. Have you seen this app? What a voice she has! WOW! Deep, dark and sultry. You can find her release "Liv Sings Light of the Valley, Shadow of the Mountain" on iTunes.

I guess in my weird, subversive sort of way, much of the music on Monday night was somehow or another related to 'merica.

Tonight on the show I'm excited to host local folk-rocksters, Rin Tin Tiger! If you've spent any time at Sunday Streets in San Francisco, then you know them as the original folk rock trip that lights up the street. They always have a crowd around them, and they're starting to blow up the club circuit on the west coast.

With their first full-release, Toxic Pocketbook, from 2012, RTT has been making a lot of heads turn. I had the Sullivan brothers, Kevin (vox/guitar) and Sean (vox/bass) play guest DJ with me tonight. They played a lot of their own music, some of their contemporary favorites, and told some great road stories.

They're headlining at Cafe DuNord this Wednesday, and it's the MUST SEE show of the week.

A Season in Hell #108: The Return of Altered Barbie

WOW!!! What a night. The Giants win the pennant and I've got Julie Anderson, curator of Altered Barbie in the studio, again!

In 2002 I was on the air interviewing Dennis McNally of the Grateful Dead, when the Giants beat the Cardinals to head to the World Series. In 2010 I was on the air interviewing Mark Growden when they won the World Series. Tonight I was on the air interviewing Julie and a few others when the Giants won the NLCS in an ocean at AT&T Park. WOW! I'm 3-0. Look out Tigers.

On to the show. It's time for the 10th annual Altered Barbie Exhibition, opening this Wednesday, October 24th at 50 Shotwell, in San Francisco. The opening night reception, which promises to be fabulous is this Friday night. Curator Julie Anderson brought in some performers tonight, including GregAngelo (that's how he spells it), Cyclub and Ethel Merman. See links below for these fabulous folks.

I've enjoyed this show so much over the years. You really do have to go check out a certain San Francisco event. Even if you hate Barbie you'll love this show. It's "Altered Barbie", so you know it's going to be really fucked up. Good stuff. Tell them John Hell sent you.

As for the music tonight, after the guests left everything was on vinyl. I really have to thank my friend Kaylynn, who donated about 150 LPs to me and Radio Valencia. Everything I played tonight came from that collection. Lot's of 80s/90s indie, punk, metal, goth. All around goodness.

The rain has slowed down, and the crowds are now out of their cars celebrating in the streets, as I write this. It's going to be a long and crazy night in the Mission. I think I'll join them. This is just too good to pass up. Don't you wish you lived in the greatest city in the world, too?

Tonight was my 100th show on Radio Valencia. There's something about that number. A one with two zeros following it. It's so....BIG! It's so solid, and right there in your face. I love things that are right there in your face.

I feel like Iron Mike Tyson. No, not really. He bit an ear off. I've never done that. I doubt I ever will. You never know though. I'm a lover, not a fighter. But I'm tough! I'm long-lasting. I'm reliable. Like. Mike. Tyson....Hmm... wait, let me think this over.

OK, I'm not like Mike Tyson, but my show will blow you away.

Sometimes you have to prepare like a fighter when you do a radio show. You have to know your opponent. In this case my opponent is the audience. I have to win you over. I have to get into your ear holes and make you beg for more. Don't worry, you'll get more. Ain't no Q-Tip gonna help you now.

Tonight it's all about the ROCK! There's so much rock in here, you'll be rolling all over the floor. In the second hour local guitar slinger and future porn star Eric "Snakey McSilver" McFadden dropped by. I've interviewed Eric a million times, but this has got to be the deepest, most hilarious interview with him yet. It's worth a listen. He tells road stories that go on for miles.
