There are reasons to feel despair, and there are reasons to celebrate. I think we can do both at the same time. Two things can be right at the same time. Time waits for no one, and it won't wait for Hell. Hell is for other people's children. Children are the future. There is no future. There is only now. 

Can you tell I'm tired?

I just finished helping Little Lauson Hell (AKA: Spawn) do her taxes. What a kick in the ass that was. 

I'm pretty brain dead. Deadhead. Head on a poll. Poll taxes. TAXES?!?!??!

That was terrible.

And you and I both know what they're using our taxes for! And since the IRS basically doesn't exist at all anymore, what's going to happen if we all just don't file?

I'm so tired I couldn't remember a better word for "don't" in the previous sentence. I'm misspelling words all over the damn place! You wouldn't know that though since I have a lot of white out.

And I'm distracted with Lauson and our kitty Chairman Meow Mao (AKA Maui) chilling out next to me. Lauson loves our kitty. 

Sorry. I was gone for a moment, We both had to take a kitty break. If you know, you know.

True story.

I think I was going to write something about music since I did host my show on Monday night. I bought a few records over the weekend and I share a lot of it tonight! Orcutt, Shelley, Miller; The Exploited, Sprints, Primitive Ring, and The Bobby Lees!!!!!!!

I kinda blew my load with all this great new music. Too bad, so sad.

So tired. I really need to call it a night and not regret my decisions.

I'm not really going anywhere. How could I? Monday nights just wouldn't be the same. Did you know I have been hosting a show on Monday nights since 2000, with only a brief break in there between radio stations? 

I was at San Francisco Liberation Radio from 2000-2003, then at Pirate Cat Radio and the FCCFree from 2006-2009, before starting Radio Valencia in 2010. And for each station I hosted the Monday 8pm show. It's like I'm some kind of institution. I don't care much for institutions, and I'm a teacher!

My years at KFJC (1989 - 1997) saw me hosting numerous slots during my tenure. When I was down at the "Wave of the West" one was required to host a graveyard shift (2am-6am) for a number of months and be signed off by the Program Director before you could take another shift. Graves are a good place to take risks. I took many, including once hosting my dear friend, Noa "The Watermonk of Dah", who, along with myself, played loud music and took calls of people making their "confessions" to myself, the Reverend Dah Wave, and Noa. That ridiculous show from 1990 almost got me kicked off the station, when my PD Les Scurry, confronted me in his very Napoleonic way, telling me what an embarrassing ass I was for that show, and since we didn't have a delay system, any one of the callers could have sworn live on the air and there would have been no way to cancel it out!

I have a cassette of the night and have only (partially) listened to it one time while I was driving over the San Mateo Bridge. This was probably in 1996 or so. I was driving alone and so embarrassed that I pulled the tape out and threw it in my backseat. I should have thrown it in the Bay. This means I still have it somewhere. 

oooh boy.

I have learned it's ok to embarrass yourself at least once a day. I tend to reach my quota by 9am. 

Tonight was all about me bringing a stack of music and figuring out just what to do with it. It came out pretty damn good!

I'm putting in some effort to list the album and year of song release. Let's see how long I keep this up. 

I won't be in this Monday night. I'm headed to The Chapel to see OSees! Never miss an OSees show! I return September 8th with local legend Scott Amendola, the drummer with the perpetual smile. We'll talk about his years playing for so many remarkable musicians, as well as promote his upcoming show at the Back Room on September 11th with SticklerPhonics.

What in the world is going to take for you to get it through that thick skull of yours that you are worth so much more than you give yourself credit for, Why do you keep listening to that dreck on the commercial radio knowing as you do that they only deliver content to the lowest common denominator? You are more special than this. They do not deserve your ears!

Radio Valencia on the other had prides itself on pushing the limit of acceptable audio. Yeah, yeah, we'll play tunes you'll recognize from time to time, from artists you love. But we're also going to play you artists that you're going to really fall in love with, leaving all others in the dust. 

And isn't that why you tune in to radio? I mean really. You're not the same person you were in high school, so why should your musical choice be the same?

Wow, this radio thing is kinda fun. Since I attended Mosswood Meltdown, July 2nd and 3rd, I decided to take last week off. Did you miss me? What do you mean no?

Taking a week off means that I have even more new music to share with you this week!

Tonight was a really special show. I was lucky enough to have Bay Area metal violinist Emily Palen of KnightressM1 on the program talking up her latest collaboration: Othered, as well as new KnightressM1 material.

I first witnesses the prowess that is Miss Emily Palen, when she graced the stage supporting Eric McFadden at Ivy Room back in 2019. Her mastery of the violin is evident, and how she shows this mastery in on entirely different level than any violinist I've ever seen. I was mesmerized. 

Starting on the violin at the age of four, Emily dedicated herself to the instrument, K-12 and into college at the University of Michigan. Following the path of classical music is a strenuous commitment and Emily took some time off to reflect on her musical future. Finding herself living in the Bay Area, Emily took this opportunity to also change the direction of her music, choosing to break out of the confines that Classical keeps you in, and found musicians to jam with. Over time she found herself attracted to Metal (not too surprising considering many excellent Metal musicians have a penchant for Classical), and adding some effects to her violin, along with some powerful lyrics centered on her own life's journey and the world she sees around her, created the dynamic superhero that is KnightressM1.

Emily can tell the story much better than I. She was with me for most of the night sharing new music from her collaboration with Henry Austin Lannan, aka: H.A.L. under the Othered title, as well as new KnightressM1 and music from the 2020 release: "Dreams and Devastations". 

Othered will have a rare performance at Eli's Mile High in Oakland on Friday, April 15th.

Have you heard the news, it's all over town. If you ain't heard it boy, you better sit down. Er, um...sorry about that. I shouldn't use 70s-era Bob Segar lyrics to draw your attention, even though it sure got the boys to take note of Betty Lou; amIright?!?!?!?! Of course I am.

This year I have recommitted to featuring my ever deepening obsession with live music. The second hour features live tracks from Dylan. Garcia, Bob Marley and more. Also, some brand spankin' new Ty Segall. I counted and I see that I now own 20 Ty Segall LPs and 8 45s. Do I get a medal for something like that?

If you've never heard of Wylde Ratttz before, then join the club. I just "discovered" this super group recently and I really have to wonder what rock my head was under when these guys appeared 20 years ago. In short, the band was a side project featuring Mark Arm (Mudhoney), Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) Mike Watt (Minutemen), Ron Asheton (Stooges), Don Flemming (Velvet Monkeys), and Sabir Mateen. They mostly covered Stooges songs, Pretty Things, and couple of originals. The music was also used for the movie Velvet Goldmine, with Ewan McGregor taking on the lead vocals. There was some hype about the fact that on the original soundtrack Mark Arm's vocals were replaced with McGregor's to the dismay of the band. You can read about that here. Again, where the hell was I in 1998 when all of this was happening? Oh right, I remember. Ugh, that's for another post, on another blog, in another universe, in another dimension.

A Season in Hell #179: Joyful Noise

Here's a fine grab bag of joyful noise for your listening pleasure. Other than the amazing Coltrane track, it's all vinyl tonight. Oh, and the opener and the Shakti tracks are off of my iPod. Don't hold it against me. I really do prefer to play all vinyl, but I have so much music is various formats, that you really can't blame me if I slide a digital track in there from time to time.

Tonight's show is a good eclectic mix. Check out the video below regarding the John Coltrane track. I had no idea, but my respect for the master just increased exponentially. There's new music from Feral Ohms, Golden Void, Boris First Aid Kit, and Black Monolith. We've got rock, punk, garage, noise, jazz, and folk. How about that?

Am I meandering? I can't really tell. I haven't slept much in the past few nights, and I drove 450 miles in 8 hours on Sunday. Everything is a bit of a fog. If you see me on the street, go easy, OK? Thanks.

A Season in Hell #137: In the OOOOOOZ

I've been a comic reader most of my life. Spiderman was my earliest hero, and it was he that took me through my formative years. I eventually made my way to Batman, via The Dark Knight series. That was some strong medicine, I tell you. Today, comics have made their way to the big screen, and it's like everyone is claiming that they've read every single issue of Ant Man, or Dr. Strange. There's money to be made, they'll tell ya!

Tonight, on my show, I'm happy to have Md Light, author of gen:oooz (pronounced gen ooooooooz). It's a dark tale of bioengineering gone wrong...or right, depending on how you see it. I love the dialectical approach. Md Light has his brain on hyperdrive for this one, as it's a strong story, full of deep symbolism from the very ancient to the futuristic utopian societies only Philip K. Dick could conjure up.

The interview takes up much of the first hour, along with lots of new music. The second hour and a half (I was on for an extra half hour tonight) is a grab bad of goodness.
