I enjoy shopping in my own record store. Or in this case, my music library at home. Before we got priced out of SF, I had a really nice music room where I had my record shelves, along with the 12 CD shelves, each 12 feet long, that I built on my own to house my ever growing bootleg collection, along with the obvious officially released material. Oh wow, I used to love being down there pulling out music, kicking back and getting excited about what I was going to play on my next show.

And then we had to move.

Now, I really do enjoy living in Berkeley. Say what you will, but I'm no Berkeley snob. I've seen the way people turn up their nose at me for the kale I choose at Berkeley Bowl, but they can all just go to Hell. To Hell I say!

And our rental is just fine, if not pretty small. And the walls are thin. At least I have a driveway. And my records are in the living room! And I'm running out of room. I had to ditch the CD shelves for CD binders, but that's ok. Right? Sure. That also means I don't play a lot of CDs on my shows these days. That being said I reached up high on the shelf in Bodhi's closet the other day to grab one of my many CD binders. Tonight features some of what was found in there.

I haven't purchased a CD in many moons, and much of what I have in there I think I have a flac version of now anyway, but there are still some real treats that I almost forgot I owned. Giant Sand, New Duncan Imperials, Idiot Flesh, and Built To Spill are just a few of the discs I brought along tonight.

I also start the show with a few extra tracks from 1968, that I didn't get to last week on my 12th annual Annual Annual. It's a fun opening set.

There's a Sam Cooke live cut you think you know, but you don't know. The Iggy set is SET OF THE NIGHT! I made an executive decision and just kept it going.

There's a lot packed into this two hours. Take a look at the setlist and click the link above to enjoy the show. Tune in next Monday, December 19, from 8-midnight to help me celebrate my 500th show on Radio Valencia! As Little Lauson Hell said to me recently "wow, that's half of 1000". Smart girl there.

Hey, 1993 called, they want their CDs back.

Enjoy.

I love having talented folks in the studio to interview. There's something about being able to ask those questions about their art that really gets me going. Monday night I was honored to have long time Bay Area guitarist, producer, engineer Myles Boisen drop in to talk about his latest project "No Accident", a mostly prepared piano collection. He was kind enough to bring a bunch of his other recordings, including solo efforts, and tracks produced with his former band, Splatter Trio. He's played on quite a few sessions over the years, including Tom Waits and David Lynch. We spoke about all of this and much more.

I neglected to ask him about his tunings! Dang. Just an excuse to have him on with me again!

What a treat!

Enjoy and please share.

You have distinguished taste in music. You only want the best. So why are you here? Just joking; I got what you need.

Often times I pull my music shortly before I leave for the station, looking for albums that I either recently purchased, or something I haven't listened to in a long time. There are also times I pull records that I haven't listen to quite enough, and figure I'll try out a track on you. That being said, these records rarely get played on my show. I don't really want to experiment on you that much. That wouldn't be fair. You want to tune into a show where the host actually has done the work for you.

I've trained countless DJs over the years. Though I impart upon them my style of programming, it's important that they find their own voice, as I did. Starting my radio life at the great KFJC (88-97), I was trained by Hell'n Hairspray, who shared her own wisdom about mixing accessible tunes with more challenging tracks. There were two school's of thought at the Fine 89: Mix it up so as not to alienate the listener, and push the limits 100% of the time, listeners-be-damned! I come from the former school. I like to push the limits from time to time, but I also don't want you all running for the hills, or to Dave-FM. HA!

On this show you get a mixed bag of sonic goodness. It's the 50th anniversary of Led Zeppelin's fourth release (untitled), I throw in a version of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" that you have never heard before, some folk blues from the deep south, Japanese psych, Detroit proto-punk, West Kenyan Guitar, Aussie garage rock, Detroit blues, and The Residents, along with many other tasty treats, fresh from Hell's Kitchen Radio.

Take a moment and glance at the playlist, and then click on the link at the top to stream or download this episode.

Enjoy and please share.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #416: The Perennial Annual Annual - 1980

Each November I choose a year that I want to showcase for two hours. It's a random selection. For my tenth annual Annual Annual I have chosen 1980. I turned 10 that year, and was already enjoying a growing record collection I could call my own. We owned a jukebox stocked with 45s from the 60s and 70s, and my dad always enjoyed having music playing throughout the house. My two older sisters (6 and 8 years older) often had the rock hits of the day playing in their rooms or on our family room stereo.

1980 was a strange year for music. So many subgenres had crept into the aural vernacular by this time. It was no longer just a Jazz, Rock, Soul world. By 1980 Heavy Metal, Funk, Punk, and New Wave had infiltrated the discussion, and there's nothing wrong with that, except commercial radio stations continued to divide us based on their perceived belief that we wanted stations that specialized in one particular genre, and that led to the continuing watering down of quality radio programming.

Thank Yahweh for college radio!

The former and extremely boring KFOG used to have their daily "10 At 10" show that focused on one year at a time, but rarely, if ever, would they take a chance on some of the artist and genres that I feature on this annual special you see before you.

1980 had a lot of tasty bites to offer however. This show showcases a few commercial tunes (yes, I play the #3 most popular song based on Billboard charts. Sue me), as well as some underground morsels I'm sure you'll enjoy chewing on.

If you dig this Annual Annual and you want to check out my previous specials take a look at the link below and have at it.

Enjoy.

Well here we are once again. I have music, you have ears. Think of it as a match made in musical hell. Hour one is full of something old and something new.

How's this look to you? Be honest? Too much of one genre? Need more female-fronted artists? Not noisy enough? How about the second hour? I'm getting more live tracks into the second hour set. Do you want longer tracks with fewer artists, or shorter tracks and more artists?

Let me know your thoughts, and keep tuning in Monday's 8-10 on Radio Valencia.

Ooh ooh ooh!!! Tune in to me this Friday on KFJC for the annual 28 hour James Brown birthday celebration!!! I'm on 10am-2pm, and I'll be throwing down some rare and live JB tracks for you to get your groove on. KFJC is hosting its annual Month of Mayhem, with many specials each day to enjoy. Check out their Mayhem schedule here.

If music be the food of GODs, then play on?

Enjoy.

I'm sleep deprived, so don't hold me too accountable for what follows. ...I'm trying hard to think of something witty to say. Hmmm. Who knew sleep was so damn important?

Ah yes, my show this week! I was able to get to my Fats Domino tribute. You probably only know him through his seminal hit "Blueberry Hill", but his sound helped define early rock and roll, rhythm and blues, with a touch of jump swing. His stride piano style was always evident in the New Orleans sound, whether he was playing one of his own songs of love and heartbreak, or a carefully chosen cover. I grew up in a household where my dad (born 1941) played a lot of blues, jazz, and rhythm and blues. Fats played a central role in my early musical development, which I'm certain I didn't realize until he passed away a few weeks back at the age of 89.

The balance of my show features new music from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (their third full-length release of 2017!) and Boris. There's some long noisy jams via Aluk Todolo, a jazzy cover by Sex Mob, a "weird" cover by The Residents, stoner spacey jams from Sleep, and an Op/Ed from John Lennon. There's more as you'll see below. Also, I gave tickets away to see Fu Manchu. Did you know that I often have tickets to local shows I give away on my show? You didn't?!?!?! Tune in and WIN!!! There's so much winning. You're going to get tired of all the winning, I promise you.

I've been spending too much time on Twitter lately. There are links below.

Next Monday night is my 7th annual Annual Annual!!! That's two hours from one year. I'm thinking about hosting 1992.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #108: The Return of Altered Barbie

WOW!!! What a night. The Giants win the pennant and I've got Julie Anderson, curator of Altered Barbie in the studio, again!

In 2002 I was on the air interviewing Dennis McNally of the Grateful Dead, when the Giants beat the Cardinals to head to the World Series. In 2010 I was on the air interviewing Mark Growden when they won the World Series. Tonight I was on the air interviewing Julie and a few others when the Giants won the NLCS in an ocean at AT&T Park. WOW! I'm 3-0. Look out Tigers.

On to the show. It's time for the 10th annual Altered Barbie Exhibition, opening this Wednesday, October 24th at 50 Shotwell, in San Francisco. The opening night reception, which promises to be fabulous is this Friday night. Curator Julie Anderson brought in some performers tonight, including GregAngelo (that's how he spells it), Cyclub and Ethel Merman. See links below for these fabulous folks.

I've enjoyed this show so much over the years. You really do have to go check out a certain San Francisco event. Even if you hate Barbie you'll love this show. It's "Altered Barbie", so you know it's going to be really fucked up. Good stuff. Tell them John Hell sent you.

As for the music tonight, after the guests left everything was on vinyl. I really have to thank my friend Kaylynn, who donated about 150 LPs to me and Radio Valencia. Everything I played tonight came from that collection. Lot's of 80s/90s indie, punk, metal, goth. All around goodness.

The rain has slowed down, and the crowds are now out of their cars celebrating in the streets, as I write this. It's going to be a long and crazy night in the Mission. I think I'll join them. This is just too good to pass up. Don't you wish you lived in the greatest city in the world, too?
