How is it possible that Radio Valencia is no 15 years old? I swear it was just yesterday that I was asked to start this station as a point of interest in a performance warehouse in the Mission. By the time I put the station together, along with Alec Bennett, Trademark Gunderson and Naomi Most, I had already been involved in about a half dozen other Bay Area community stations. 

I was willing to start Radio Valencia as long as I wasn't the one in charge. My goal was to have it operate as a cooperative. My hope was staff would work together in committees to make our station sound incredible and be active in the community.

I wish it has worked out that way.

Someone along the way came up with the concept of the "do-ocracy": if there is something you want to do at the station, then do it! 

This looks good on paper, but it can also mean if you only want to do your show and nothing else, that's fine too. 

This has been our undoing. We have had a number of really incredible people on staff over the years who have taken on a lot of work: scheduling, programming, engineering, but most of the staff we have had are only interested in hosting their shows. 

I really hate the "do-ocracy"

I'm glad to report that the music programming is some of the best I have heard on radio.

Today we have a steering committee, of which I sit on. We direct the actions of the station. We keep the lights on and the turntables spinning. 

Soon we are launching a new website (thanks to those who contributed to our fundraiser last winter), and a possible move to save overhead. Our current rent in our storefront location is too damn high! We also want to add more shows. Before COVID we had over 50 shows. Today we have 23. More shows = more money = more opportunities for RV to engage in the community. Cut down the rent overhead and we can bring in more staff who will pay less in dues, which will lead to a more robust on-air schedule, etc, etc, etc.

You get the idea.

I love having the station to play music and interview great people. I have loved being in our storefront on 22nd street since 2020. And these past 15 years have been mostly a real joy. If you read this far, what the hell is wrong with you? 

As for the music, I was thinking about playing music from each year we've been on the air, but then I figured why would do that? So, instead, I just did what I do and play great music that I think you need to hear. New music from Wet Leg, Ty Segall, LA Witch, Mark Growden, King Gizzard, and OSees. The rest of the night is me painting the aural landscape with sounds that will please your ears.

I was lucky enough to see The Who on their reunion tour in 1989. This of course was many years removed from the passing of the maniac drummer, Keith Moon. I didn't care. I got to see the three remaining members rock out, hard. HARD!

But this would be nothing compared to the epic 14 years with Moon manning the drum throne. I actually have the show at the Cow Palace where Moon is so drunk he falls off the throne and Townshend asks if there's anyone in the audience who can play the drums? Crazy.

I have a love/meh relationship with The Who. There are times when I go hard for this band, and I really am blown away at the lyricism of Townshend, and the musicianship of the band, often comparing their styles to The Kinks, another of the first wave British Invasion bands. Other times I get bored with them. I think I wish they had an additional guitarist on stage with them, as the power-trioesque aspect of the three musicians did not come across as well-rounded as bands like Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath, both of whom had a similar lineup.

In this show it sounds as if the stage has about a doze people on it all rocking to their highest peak!

September 29, 1969 at Het Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Netherlands was the place to be. Keith Moon fell hard on the stairs coming to the stage and was still bleeding from his head when the show began. Then Princess (now Queen) Beatrix of the Netherlands was in attendance. You're going to get some of the best performances from their first five years and all of Tommy! This was a band seriously on top of their game! And this Pre-FM source kicks the hell out of what the listeners at home heard.

I know you're going to dig this!

Oh wow, OK then, here we go. Another week of me diving deep into my live bootleg library to share some treats for you. And have I got a couple of tasty morsels for your earbuds? Darn tootin' I do!

First up is The Fall from the 6 Music Festival at Gateshead, UK, February 21, 2015, featuring the master

of post-punk himself, MES (aka: Mark E Smith). Full disclosure: though I was turned onto The Fall starting in the late 1980s when I was at KFJC, I wasn't ready for them. It's like giving a toddler dark chocolate: my palate just wasn't ready. And then when it was ready, where to begin??? I'm happy to say that over the past 18 months I have dug deep into the discography of this incredible band, read more than my share of exposés on the band, purchased 10 LPs so far, and downloaded about 20 live shows from 1985 up until their final tour just before MES passed in 2018. He didn't even tell he bandmates he was sick! 

Ask me in five years what I think about this band and I may not let you leave until I've convinced you they were the greatest band of all time.

Headlining tonight is a man that just could not be stopped! I'm talking about the Nigerian Nightmare, Fela Ransome Kuti. Absolutely a challenging and important figure in Pan-African music and sociopolitical circles. Every song was a shot across the bow of those in charge. It's a wonder he lived to 58. He's like Bob Marley and Che Guevara all wrapped up into one, claimed the Herald Sun of Melbourne, Australia in 2011. How right they are. Being a huge James Brown fan throughout my life, when I got turned onto Fela in my early 20s, I was hooked. Most of his many releases include album-side tracks, each at least 20 minutes in length. I own 40 of his over 60 releases. It is my hope to own his entire discography some day. Every track is a blessing.

As for this show, you get to enjoy one of the finest audience recordings in my collection. Fela Kuti and Africa 80 at the City Broiler, in Santa Barbara, CA, August 15, 1987. I don't know the generation, but it must be close to the master, it sounds that good. And the band is HOT!!!

Sometimes  you just need to hold your breath and dive in. Maybe you need to hold your nose and close your eyes. It's possible you should wear knee pads. I strongly suggest a change of clothes, and perhaps a paper bag. You'll know when you'll need them.

I'm speaking of course seeing the Butthole Surfers live in concert. I was lucky to see them three times between 1993 - 2010, including attending the Independent Worm Saloon record release party outside of Austin in 1993, where I smacked vocalist Gibby Haynes' ass with a KFJC sticker. He loved it so much he jumped into my arms, wrapped his legs around me and licked my face. He was clad only in a gold lamé g-string. 

Seeing them live is like an amusement ride where unbeknownst to those in attendance, the park has actually been closed for a decade or so, but the carnies came back to open it without actually looking to see if the rides are ready to go. Oh, and they're all on LSD, all the time. 

As for this particular show, they put on a real fine show May 10, 1986, Paradiso, Amsterdam, Netherlands. Honestly, you really need to have been there, but listening comes close.

Tonight The Melvins are headlining. I had a really hard time deciding which Melvins show I was going to share with you. I have many between 1985 - 2021. 

I've been seeing this great band almost twice a year since 1992. I can't think of a better Rock band. Really, I can't. There isn't one. Name one. I dare you. I love that line the late, great Gonzo journalist, Hunter S. Thompson used to describe his love for the Grateful Dead, "If the Grateful Dead came to town, I'd beat my way in with a fucking tire iron, if necessary.". I can safely say I feel that way about The Melvins. I don't get FOMO, but missing a Melvins show hurts. It hurts like I need Oxy, hurt. The rock so damn hard. I saw them a few weeks following ACL surgery back in 2016 at Slims in SF. I was still on crutches. I kept creeping closer and closer to the pit. My buddy kept pulling me back, but it was just drawing me in. I didn't go in. I'm not stupid. I was actually on Oxy after that surgery and threw them all out after day five when I accidentally doubled my dose. That was too much fun. I knew I had to stop then and there. 

Enjoy this great show, featuring my favorite lineup including the Big Business boys, Jared and Cody on bass and drums respectively. What a quartet! This tour from 2006 was hard to beat, and this show from the 40 Watt in Athens, Georgia, October 28, 2006 is one of the best of the tour. Seeing them in SF for this tour was mind blowing. Hold onto your seats and get ready for a great time.

Also, being a huge concert poster collector for 35+ years, the Melvins have always held a soft spot in my heart. They really know how to support that scene as well, making certain that each show has a unique poster, created by a different artist. It's almost too much.

Take the time to read "Our Band Could Be Your Life", by Michael Azerrad. The Butthole Surfers chapter is worth the price of admission. I took my girlfriend (now my bride) to see these two bands play at the Regency Theater in San Francisco, August 20, 2011. The Melvins played a short opening set, wanting to give the Surfers a full two hour set. What my lady wasn't ready for was the video to go along with the trip. She had to take a break in the lounge. I don't recall if she ever came back for the rest of the show? I'll need to go ask her.

I really shouldn't wait until someone dies to pay tribute to them. This past week the legendary lady of Funk, Miss Betty Davis passed. She has been out of the public eye for many decades, but will forever be remembered for being way ahead of her time. Though she was married to Miles Davis for a short time, and is credited for genuinely updating his style, she would have made her mark without him. What a huge talent. 

In my many years of collecting I have only ever found this one Betty Davis show, from July 25, 1976 in "Riviera '76 Festival Jazz-Rock", Circuit Paul Ricard, Le Castellet, France. This is an audience recording that I tweaked a bit to enhance the volume. Honestly I would not be playing this if it were anyone else, but she really deserves this attention. I think it's very listenable and incredibly enjoyable.

The headliner this evening is the one and only Meters. What a great band, through and through. This show from October 1, 1976 at The Kingfish Lounge in Baton Rouge, Louisiana is a real treat. You can feel the small size of the venue. It's almost as if you are in the room with them. I love the announcement before the end of the show that they are headed to San Francisco following the performance. It's as if they're asking everyone to send them off with well wishes. I'm really excited for you to hear this great soundboard.

Midwest rock is where it was at back in the 70s. Seriously, if you wanted to Rock, then it was all about Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota and the such. I really think there wouldn't have been any arena rock if it weren't from the many bands that hailed from those states. What would have been the point? 

Can you even imagine the dreams of every young headbanger growing up in the basements of the Midwest back then, seeing themselves on the big stage, rockin' out to all the denim-clad teens, throwing the devil horns into the air?

And all that Aquanet! 

I've got a couple bands that are going to make you flash that Zippo lighter by the end of the show. 

First up is an extremely rare James Gang show. Not many of these Joe Walsh-era James Gang shows exist, and those that do are mostly audience recordings. This one from the Fillmore West in San Francisco, November 21, 1970 is a carefully remastered audience recording that really impresses me. I've had the previous version of this show for many years and already loved it. When the remaster came out I could hardly believe this wasn't a soundboard. There's a lot I could say about this band and this show, but I really think the performance speaks for itself.

What's crazy about this show is the lineup. James Gang was in support of Love with Arthur Lee. But the opening band was a very young Black Sabbath on their first tour of the United States! WOW!

Your headliner tonight is the one and only birthday boy himself, Alice Cooper from El Paso, Texas, June 4, 1980. What an amazing band, and more importantly, too underrated. I never really understood why? Was is the makeup? I can't imagine. Was it the horror-theme of much of the lyrics? Maybe. Were they being overshadowed by others like Kiss, Ted Nugent, and ZZ Top? That's what I'm thinking. Frank Zappa knew what was up, signing them to his label. Smart guy, that Zappa fella. Whatever happened to him? This show is taken from a "Supergroups in Concert" broadcast, October 25, 1980...right before Halloween. I cut out the DJ banter and interviews, and leave you with just the music. You're welcome.  

Vicent Furnier (aka: Alice Cooper) was born in Detroit, Michigan but moved to Phoenix, Arizona as a young teen. I like to think the Midwest Rock sound is in his DNA. Cooper turned 74 on February 4th.

How do you feel about Jazz? Not into it? Indifferent? Turned off? Jazzed?! As a genre, Jazz gets pigeonholed into something akin to Classical. And I really think that's because it's no longer the POP music of America. Jazz is the most American music of all. That, and Blues. And maybe Gospel.

If there were no Jazz, there would be no Rock, R&B, Soul, or Funk. And like these genres, Jazz cannot be all thrown into one pile. It's not all about brass instrumentation. And it's not all about free-Jazz stylings like Coltrane and Coleman. 

Jazz has many flavors.

Tonight I feature two groups, both of whom thrive on improvisation and exploration. And both are cover bands! You know how much I love covers.

First up is New York City's own Sex Mob. This quartet, which started out as a part time side project for slide-trumpet player (yes you read that right) Steven Bernstein, has become his major musical vehicle. Surrounded by stellar players Briggan Krause (alto sax), Tony Scherr (bass), and Kenny Wollesen (drums), Sex Mob takes songs you know and "love" to an entirely other level. Good luck figuring out exactly what it is they are covering. Bernstein's banter between songs is hilarious. You really need to see them live to appreciate the onstage antics. I have seen them about a dozen times between 1996 and 2018, all in San Francisco. I'd like to thank KFJC DJ, Andy Cadaver for turning me onto these fellas.

Set two features a San Francisco quartet that lived a short and magnificent life: TJ Kirk, featuring Scott Amendola (drums), Will Bernard (Guitar/Slide), John Schott (Guitar), and Charlie Hunter (8-string). They play the songs of Thelonious Monk (T), James Brown (J) and Rahsaan Roland Kirk (Kirk...obviously). I was lucky to see a few of these shows back in the mid-90s and I can attest to the brilliance of the musicianship, as well as the arrangements.

Can I tell you my love of Pink Floyd? My very first live bootleg was Pink Floyd, June 18, 1975, Boston Garden. That is one tape I still wish I owned, even though I have had a quality Dan Lampinski flac upgrade for over a decade now. 

Like many I was into the Dark Side of the Moon and later releases. I spent many a fine night, tripping the night fantastic listening to Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall. The Final Cut and later releases didn't get a whole lot of listening to, though I did enjoy A Momentary Lapse of Reason, and I saw that tour live in Oakland, in the rain, on a few hits of windowpane, in April 1988. Fun times.

I kept getting pulled towards the pre-DSotM-era Floyd. Once I saw Live at Pompeii I was hooked. I was probably 18 or 19 when I saw it the first time, and just knew that tunes like Careful With That Axe, Eugene and especially Echoes, really did me in. I had to have more. I also dove head first into Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and fell deeply in love with Syd Barrett, going so far to purchase his two officially released solo effort, Madcap Laughs and Barrett. I was working a Tower Records in San Mateo when the Barrett solo compilation Opal was released. Such a fabulous collection. 

I gobbled up every book about the book I could find. I think "Bricks in the Wall" continues to be my favorite read about them. I recently purchased a used version of the Glenn Povey book, "In the Flesh", which I quickly took a highlighter to. There are a few shows I still need acquire.

Speaking of shows, tonight I have a mix of live Pink Floyd to share with you. I'm starting out with two tracks featuring Syd, Scream Thy Last Scream, recorded August 7, 1967, and Vegetable Man, recorded October 9, 10, or 11, 1967.

Following these two treats I have three tracks from the Piper Club, Rome, Italy "First European International Pop Festival", 6th May 1968. This is just five months after Syd left (got kicked out? Was left on the side of the road?) and David Gilmore joined. Their covering three Syd-era songs, but they sound good and fresh with the addition of Gilmore.

Honestly, this is all about Bowie. It was his birthday on January 8th, and January 10th is the date of passing back in 2016. That year suuuuuuuucked. Then again, everything has sucked since Bowie died. Maybe he knew something we didn't?

I played a live Bowie show from 1973 just about a year ago, on February 1, 2021.  I wanted to share something more current, though this one is 32 years old. ugh. I was 20 in 1990, so excuse me if this feels like yesterday. Since this set from the Sound and Vision tour is only an hour, I knew I had to find a quality opener you would root for. 

I give you The White Stripes from August 29, 2004 from the Carling Festival in Leeds, England. If you're a fan of Meg and Jack then you're going to love this set. the FM recording is clear and loud! And Jack is as ego-driven as ever. Quality White Stripes bootlegs are not easy to come by. I don't think they ever recorded their own shows very often, so much of what's out there is audience recordings. This FM is hot to the touch. This show is between the "Elephant" and "Get Behind Me Satan" releases, and has songs from throughout their early discography.

As for our headliner tonight I give you the one and only Starman himself, Mr Space Oddity, The Hero of our show, David Bowie. 

The Sound and Vision tour in 1990 was billed as a greatest hits tour, allowing Bowie to play all these great songs and then retire them from live performance. This show from September 29, 1990 (one day before I turned 20) is the last show of the tour, performed at the Derby Festival, Estadio River Plate, Buenos Aires, Argentina. 

What I remember best about this tour is the 1-900 number that was offered so fans could call in and request the setlist. Wikipedia actually has a really good page dedicated to this tour. 

The quality of this FM recording is excellent. Bowie recorded a number of shows on this tour, but not the August 29th one for some reason. That's why I have chosen to share it with you tonight. 

Lineage: FM broadcast (low generation)

For Jerry Garcia, who was born on August 1st, and died on August 9th, we have the Days Between; eight days of celebration. For Bowie, we only have from January 8th to January 10th. I really want to make this one count.

Another year has come and gone. And what have we to show for it? A few new masks, a few new variants? Some new vocabulary...like "variants". How did you spend this past year? What are you looking forward to in the next year? The midterm elections? Woo hoo! ugh.

Let's step back to two classic New Years Eve shows that deserve your ears. 

Starting off is an excellent, albeit too short lived blues band: The Blues Brothers, featuring "Joliet" Jake and Elwood Blues, aka: John Belushi and Dan Ackroid of the Not Read For Primetime Players, from the original cast of Saturday Night Live. I have serious history with this band. My dad bought their debut LP, "Briefcase Full of Blues" when it came out in 1978, and I quickly absconded with it. It is one of the few records that I have literally played to its demise. I replaced it a few years back, but lovingly kept the original. I should frame that in 2022. 

It was the Blues Brothers that started my on my love affair with cover tunes, and digging for the originals. This show is from December 31, 1978 at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, opening for the Grateful Dead at the closing of Winterland. It was a legendary night all around. This recording is an excellent Betty Board, recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson. It is so much fun. Research this band to get to know more about how they came to be.

The headliner tonight is the one and only Jimi Hendrix with the Band of Gypsies, recorded live December 31, 1969 at the fabled Fillmore East, in New York City. This is the second set from that night, and you can now find this officially released, and you should go grab it. It consists of four sets spread across two nights: December 31st, and January 1st, featuring Hendrix on guitar and vocals, Billy Cox on bass, Buddy Miles on drums and vocals. This is going to take you somewhere you prefer to be.
